Q: do I need root to downgrade android versions? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Verizon of course crippled my phone with the Ota of 4.3 I took.
I've lived with this looks g enough. Random lockups, needing a better pull. Camera failures.
I don't want or need to mess with root it just want to go back to my last stable build, whichever it was.
Can someone direct me there? Do I need to use Odin?
Where can I find safe original firmware?
Thanks I'm advance.

You can't downgrade, you're stuck with 4.3 because of the new bootloader.
You can install safestrap after you root it with saferoot. That will allow you to install 4.3 TouchWiz roms only.

Okay.
Are there any roms thus far that are t garbage?
From what I've read the issues I have effect most of the galaxy line.
So then.
1. Obtain root
2. Install a bootstrap that allows a custom rom in spite of the relocked bootloader?
I presume these guides exist here. I'll research them.

[Q] Will i loose root if i update to JB from root injected ICS?

KK..like i posted before, i rooted my note using the first method. Thats is i flash a root injected ics european stock rom because i just wanted root and didnt want my count to go up. Now i want to update to jellybean via OTA. Will i loose my root? if i loose my root it means i have to use cwm recovery method, i dont want that. and there is no root injected jellybean stock rom. so please can someone tell me how to go about it? thanks
If you're rooted you can't update OTA. Simplest thing would be to install the stock rom using PC Odin and reroot using Chainfire's Exynos Abuse or just flash the rom on Mobile and Odin with root injection.

how do I do that
I suppose 3 things.
1) Search. If that's your response you don't know enough about what the risks are. Just use google. The forum isn't here to do your work for you.
2) Read. A lot. For the same reason.
3) Try saying please.
I don't want to sound like an arse but all the information you need is right here and is easy to find. It's rude to expect it of others when you can't be bothered yourself.
The thread you should start with though is probably http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297

Atrix 2 ROM questions

I'm wondering what is the benefit to using a custom ROM on the Atrix 2? I've been eyeballing the dirty unicorn ROM, but honestly the stock ROM seems to work well enough. With my kindle fire it was an obvious choice as I hated the stock ROM, but other than a few missing features the Atrix 2 seems just fine. What's you guys thoughts?

more options, less bloatware, runs faster, and more stable, actual suupport that you dont get from motorola.
along with a cleaner look, but thats all opinion.
Basically the same reason for all devices. Stock just sucks.

If you like stock ICS, but are considering a custom ROM then you should try NUMA.
It's still ICS, but it's a huge upgrade from the Motorola ICS, and because it is stock based it's the only custom ROM that has all the hardware features working. That said, since the breakthrough with Kexec, I have flashed every JB ROM here and they're all great in their own respects. My advice to you would be to try them all. You're sure to find one that suits your needs.

Couple of more questions, first up: what's Kexec? Next: if I flash a custom is it possible to go back stock? Last up: does flashing a ROM effect your unlock status? I would hate to lose that.

My knowledge of Kexec is limited but my understanding is that it is a way to load a custom kernel on top of the stock kernel. This is needed because the locked bootloader prevents us from simply overwriting the stock kernel.
Yes you can flash the FXZ via RSD lite to return to stock. You'll need to find the FXZ that is specific to you're phone ESPECIALLY if it is an AT&T branded phone. Just make sure you know your phone's model number and firmware version so you can find the correct FXZ.
No, flashing a ROM will not have any effect on your carrier unlock, and neither will flashing an FXZ.

Just did some looking at numa. Looks good on paper, I like Ics so I don't think I'll upgrade to jellybean anytime soon. So numa it is when I decide to flash. But it looks like I need to do my homework on flashing the Atrix 2. that locked bootloader seems to be a pain. I don't need a bricked device.
Sent from my MB865 using xda app-developers app
Honestly if you follow flashing instructions in the op of rom threads, chances are very slim that you will brick. Soft brick, maybe, but those are easy to recover from. My rule of thumb, titanium backup everything before flashing a rom,

Just flashed numa and I'm very happy with it so far. It seems to be really stable so far, and allot of the extras are nice. Like the toggles in the notification bar. Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer my questions, it really helped.

If you can not answer these types of questions on your own then you have no business flashing anything as you will most likely get yourself in trouble. What you need to do is read, read, read, read, and read and learn the answers to these questions for yourself. All the information you need is readily available and easy to find you just have to look for it. Step by step instructions are listed in the op of every ROM so there is no need to repost them all here. The only short cuts with this phone almost always lead directly to bricked phones. Also, "best ROM" inquiries not allowed because the answers are subject to user experience and therefore varies from user to user. What is good for me may not be good for you.

You probably flashed the ROM which had to be flashed only via BMM. Do an fxz and flash ROM using BMM.

You can only flash GB ROMs if your stock firmware is GB. If your stock firmware is ICS, you can flash any ICS or jb ROM. That's probably what your issue is. Just reflash your FXZ, root, install Boot Menu Manager and try one of the ICS or JB ROMs. Make sure you read the instructions thoroughly this time to avoid any more problems.

Is boot menu manager compatible with GB stock ROM..... I saw a video tutorial they said its only for ICS or JB

I doubt it. If you're on GB then you probably need this instead:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1606257
And if you are on GB, then you can only flash the ROMs that are meant for GB. They are kind of old, though, and no longer supported.

Hello Friends, This is BRICKBEATS and I have just COOKED my first custom rom for the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III 4.3 from the recently released update. This is stock WITH KNOX APPS REMOVED AND SOME VZW BLOAT REMOVED, and was supposed to have root but it doesn't seem to work at this time. THIS IS A CWM FLASHABLE ZIP AND DOES NOT FLASH THE SECURED BOOTLOADERS, MODEM, OR RPM FILES!!!! I just flashed it to my phone less than an hour ago so any bugs are unknown as of yet. I figured we could all test it out and any input is appreciated. I will get screen shots soon!!! Enjoy
edit: wifi is broken
edit 2: give a decent amount of time for that first boot, it may take a battery pull and hard reset..

Yes if you do flash this rom you can in fact revert to 4.1.2 or any version of android built for this phone for that matter. All this is doing is just installing a rom that has the 4.3 base. If you do decide to go back, just flash a rom thats built on any other version of android for this phone.
this is actually a better rom option with more functionality...

Just to be clear, if your gs3 has the official 4.3 on it, you CANNOT unlock the bootloader. You WILL brick your phone if you try.

I have just received a replacement phone. I have gone about the ways I rooted previously and none of them are working. This did NOT come with 4.3 from the factory, and the 4.3 update is not installed. I reverted back to stock from android recovery, so 4.0.4 is on there right now. But no matter what I do, whether it's the one click method, the GS3 toolkit format, or manually trying to gain root through recovery, nothing works. On the "downloading" screen that you need during use of ODIN, it says "SECURE CHECK FAIL", and it'll either have "boot" after it, or "kernel". Anyone have any ideas? As of this moment I have no working phone. Looking for some help asap. Thank you guys.

Try to Odin flash factory 4.1.2 and see if the secure check turn to "enabled". If it's then try to root again.
I just Odin flashed a stock 4.1.2 ROM actually. It's booting up normally now. It honestly seems like they added a layer of protection on the newly distributed handsets. I will try to go through the normal 1 click method again and see if that works. How would I check if the secure check is still enabled?
Actually, no, it's still 4.0.4 but I'm going to try the same thing just with a different 1 click method.
Looks like the really old way worked. With the ez-unlock and ez-recovery. I had to completely demolish what was there when it was sent to me, though. So anyone who gets a replacement, the best bet is to flash a fresh 4.1.2 ROM or 4.0.4 ROM immediately, boot back up and go from there.

I just now am getting familiar with what an RUU is and from my understanding so far there's 2 types? 1. radio upgrade unit & 2. rom upgrade utility. Which is yours? I'm not really looking forward to flashing roms atm, just looking for something quick like flashing some firmware that doesn't overwrite my entire system partition 'IF' possible. If not then am I stuck with flashing what appears to be a new rom? Or do I have another option? Thanks for reply!
Edit: Also I forgot to include that I'm S-OFF with bootloader unlocked & permanent root w TWRP recovery, would this act like one of Samsungs crappy OTA's and re-lock my phone IF it was the ROM thing I mentioned above rather than just Radio Firmware?

And ruu is an ruu. It is both the stock rom and firmware included. There are reset parameters that a factory reset on stock recovery can do that twrp etc are not.
This will not affect your lock or s off status and it's pre rooted. Also, there's not really "permanent root" on any phone. More so with s off you have the ability to flash su and root.
