I just got a notification on my phone about a new moto software update. Will it make it harder for my to flash, root, or mod my phone?
Everything is still stock on the phone i havent done any mods yet
The official bootloader unlock should work regardless, so no if you don't mind doing the official unlock method.
I've heard the exploit to get root without the official unlock has been closed, but I think someone else said they found a way around it. I don't know either way, I officially unlocked the device the day I got it
Is there a new update? post/after asa14?
Checked around but after seeing the old do this if you cant upgrade threads pop up I was curious.
Seen some traces of the 9.8.2Q JellyBean update for the Q, but don't know it's current status.
Interesting and good news, Just checked and mine stated not update available sadly..

Yeah, the motofail2go exploit to root works only if you haven't updated. After rooting, you can save root by Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, temp unroot, install any updates, then restore root with OTA rootkeeper. Works great, and you keep your warranty. But of course you can't flash any ROMs or anything, but you can still use Titanium backup, other programs that require root.
see this thread:

Bought my GS4 yesturday, this morning around 10am i got an OTA that was about 28mb. Not sure what that OTA did because i cant find any change log anywhere or anybody else talking about it...does anybody know anything?
Build Number is JDQ39.I337MVLUAMDL
On Rogers in Canada
You should probably have put down Rogers on the thread title. I didn't receive anything but I am no AT&T. But one more thing, I was talking in this other thread with the Canadian carrier guys. Is your Contacts and phone app white or black / blue?
Even though I'm on AT&T, I am happy for Rogers customers. Can anyone elaborate on what this update does? Hopefully it addresses the lag?
On US AT&T and no OTA. I wouldn't download any OTA's though just in-case they address the hacked bootloader.
@geoldr: The OTA was launched by Samsung globally.
Good to see you again P-Pat! I got the notification, but rooted before installing in case there was patch to stop root. After I tried to install and it said my phone has been modified and updates are not available. I am now searching to figure out how to install this....

I'm a bit confused at this. Even if Samsung releases an update, we won't get it instantly because the carriers have to test it out and everything right? Hasn't this always been the case or am I missing something?

From what I have read, so far it has been launched on Sprint, Rogers and the international version. I am sure AT&T will come soon. Samsung launches the updates, but the carriers distribute them...that is why Android version updates have different timing for different carriers.

For now I will be staying away from it. I don't want anything locking up the chance of unlocking the bootloader.

Somewhere I read they can force push security updates onto the phone without you even having to accept it. This is something I think they would do over the bootloader to prevent people from stopping the patch.

I figured with this method of root it wouldn't effect the update since we weren't messing with the firmware.

not always, i received 2 updates on the GS3 that were released from sammy and did not go through carrier testing, unless they did it so uniformly that it didnt seem like it, but then again, telus and bell got it the same day rogers did, but those updates were stability and securtiy related, they didnt bring any features, so i guess it really depends on what the updates changes
This link confirms what David Dee was saying, it also matches my build number and size of update

No, once rooted the otas will not work because it detects device modification.
Just woke up to another OTA and wondering if anyone has updated yet? not sure if its 5.1.1 or not.
Hard to tell since you don't say what you currently have. Could be the latest 5.02 or something else.
I got it too and installed it. I'm still on 5.0.2
From what I read it's just a small security update and to allow roaming in Puerto Rico. Nothing big
Phone info after the update:
It allows roaming in Puerto Rico and fixes reactivation lock and that's it really

I would be careful updating if you have root as the kernel is dated June 17th.
Well I have OTA's blocked to prevent them. I don't see a reason to let this one install.
Official changelog from Verizon. Build number: VRU2AOF1.
Anyone know what they changed with RL? How does that affect you if you've had legit trouble turning the feature off?
How do I manually turn that off?
What app(s) do I freeze to turn off OTA? I'm using Titanium, and i just don't want to fudge it up.
I'm guessing System Updates 1.0? Is it just that, or am I missing it?
So I am rooted and I accidently hit it. I'm stuck on the Verizon red logo after boot..
Nevermind, force reset and phone booted up. The security update said it has been updated but I am still rooted.

Either delete the following folders or freeze the apks with TB, I prefer to delete them. Removing the following apks will free you of OTAs and most of the annoying pop-ups.
SDM.apk system/app (OTA Updater)
SecurityLogAgent.apk system/app (Samsung Security Pop Up)
SPDClient.apk system/priv-app (Samsung Security Policy Update)
No way in hell am I updating my phone for that whack ass update.
I wonder if any of our ROM dev's will even debase.
I mean I guess the kernel / radio change may make it worth it but I will wait for 5.1.1.

If you value root....
If you like having root DO NOT update to OF1. It looks like rollback is prevented in this update... Thanks Verizon!!

Even though the instructions clearly say to turn OFF RL before rooting... but if you have OF1, you can't root it anyway, or at least not yet. PingPong method is no longer valid on that OTA and further.

Wow.. Preventing roll back? Closing up root vulnerabilities? This is more than just a security move. Honestly is some scumbag stuff going on here. I don't want to leave Verizon but they are making it hard. They spend all this time working on some stupid ass update meanwhile Spring GS6 just got 5.1.1..
If they spent less time worrying about users flashing older Stock images and Rooting and working on the latest software I would have nothing to say.
I really hope Ping Pong can Root this soon. Flashing backwards prevention will only prevent people who are already on OF1 obviously but I feel bad for them.

I'm wondering the same thing. It's been a while since I've heard anything about efforts to downgrade from OE1. I'm unrooted and would so desperately like to root, but unfortunately installed stock OE1 :crying:, and then OG5. I really really hope there will be some method of rooting in my situation. And for the record, why would Verizon release an update that would re-allow to root? Why would that ever happen intentionally?

It's true that mistakes can happen, but once they patch the bootloader to prevent downgrading, they don't actually have to touch it again. So if they don't change anything in it, then the chance of breaking it is slim to none. Not to mention this update didn't do much anyways.

Anything OE1 or higher cannot be rooted. OG5 is higher than OE1, and therefore has the same issues for people who want to root that OE1 has. OE1 has a bootloader that disallows downgrading of firmware which is required to root these phones. The only way you can still downgrade OE1/OG5 is if you came from a rooted phone and did NOT take OTA OE1/OG5, and flashed a firmware that did not change the bootloader.

The stagefright that was incompletely patched was apparently 4 lines of code somewhere in one of the system files, wouldn't be in the bootloader. I understand the sentiments, I would have returned the phone immediately in your case. I'm already running out of patience even being rooted, with the locked bootloader and whatnot. It has been repeated a million times though, in basically every "recent" thread so I can see why people would be frustrated. The issue is, the more people post the same questions, the more hidden the important questions get, leaving people even less likely to read/search the thread for their answers. Just basic forum etiquette IMO. I'm just a little more patient at times answering questions, that's all.

There was an $18,000 bounty for a root method and bootloader unlock before one came out. Geohot used Pinkie Pie's findings of an exploit in all Linux kernels to create his root. He now works for Google's Project Zero and isn't allowed to provide root, and even if he was allowed, he probably doesn't care anymore. That exploit has since been patched, hence the need to downgrade to apply Towelroot. Since then, Verizon has blocked the ability to downgrade.
Notes: Bootloader is still locked despite the length of time this phone has been out. This phone is also "dying" and support is mostly gone considering many of the devs went to other devices/new S6, or devices/carriers that don't have this locked bootloader issue. Look at the Note forum. There's still not even a real root for them, they have a temporary one the last time I checked.
So no. Not only are few people looking if they are at all, but support of this phone from Verizon is probably gone as well. This OG5 is more of a mandatory security patch than a new update. 5.0 is most likely the last version for Verizon's S5 (I'd be surprised if they released 5.1/5.1.1).

The various threads around here are quite helpful. If you're rooted, you're going to have to go back to stock. The OTA update should then kick in.
There's a thread over in the Android Development Section (It's at the top) that is exactly what you're looking for.
So, yes there are certainly methods by which you can update to 5.1.1!

This is a detailed tutorial on how to return your phone to stock. You'll end up with a data wipe, so make sure to back up anything you want to keep. You'll want to do this first. Nothing should go wrong (no guarantees though, as always), just make sure you pick up the H950 version of the system file (and put this in the root directory of your internal storage, and rename it to "system.img" if isn't already.)

You'll reboot to your bloated stock system, and you should be able to get the OTA update. If you come across the "Please wait 24 hours and try again" message, just go manually set your date and time ahead, that should get it working.
Then you'll want to use this link to update to flash a 5.1.1 (rooted) system file (similar to the way you did it before).

After a great deal of tediousness, you can install Titanium Backup and remove all of the bloatware. Obviously, be cautious, you might break things (and then you'll need to factory reset, yet again). In the near future I'll post a thread of all the bloatware I removed without any issue.
EDIT: I've created a freezable bloatware list for those of you unsure what's safe and what's not. The thread is here:
Ti Backup Bloatware Freeze List
Once you're done with that, if you're brave enough, you can install the XPosed framework (even though the bootloader is locked) using this link:

The process is a bit sketchy, the extended periods of black screen are a bit foreboding, but it worked like a charm.
I am also in the same boat. Not receiving OTA, tried factory reset and date+1 doesn't work
Has anyone outside the US or AT&T network been able to update? Perhaps it works with a VPN? I haven't been able to update my brand new phone with zero modifications.
Im outside US, and i haven't got the OTA, i been trying changing the date and factory reset every now and then...
I will try a VPN and see how it goes.
Yes
When I returned to stock 5.0.1 I got the ATT OTA update. I'm in the US.
I don't claim to know the intricacies of flashing, but there are H950 5.1.1 system images floating around these boards. Could you flash one of those while on stock 5.0.1? I'm not sure. We do have an unbrick tool though so you'd probably be able to recover.
Let me know if anyone skips the part where they let the phone update itself, and go straight to flashing 5.1.1.
I just bought this phone brand new in the box because I heard the update was out on ATT, not for me I guess.
If you're already on 5.1.1 and you try to recover with the 5.0.1 image you will brick your phone.
As far as receiving the update notification on the AT&T version, I had to change the date forward a few days. I would check for updates after each date change and eventually got the notification. If that doesn't work, do a factory reset and try again.

Sounds like a direct flash upgrade is a no go then. I also set my device forward a few days (like a week) to get the update.
I Just ordered this phone and will be using it on cricket wireless, does anyone know if I'll need an active at&t sim card to get the 5.1.1 update or will I be able to get the update with my cricket wireless sim card?
Nope
Using a Straight Talk SIM myself and I got the OTA update just fine.

THANK YOU! after 7 painful days this solved my issue! you are awesome I never would have thought to take off auto time and date and jump forward. In one day increments it wouldnt grab the OTA. First time i went to september and boom, I got it. !

Yes, went from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1
I used the method above of changing the date a month forward.. It went from saying up to date to giving me the ota
I hope the update isn't crop because I don't know much of rooting and roming. Hoping to learn stuff here as xda is full of some smart folks.
