[Q] HTC One S stopped working. Help - General Questions and Answers

I have a HTC One S cell phone that stopped working after I did a software update from the settings menu. The phone has no service (not able to connect to the network). My service provider is Wind mobile. They tried a "hard reset" or factory data reset this did not solve the problem. Then I had a technician replace the firmware and downgrade to an earlier version of software. This got the phone to work. I was able to make one call. However I was unable to pickup wifi. I tried to turn on wifi in the setting menu and then the phone stopped working again. I have tried talking to HTC customer service but they have not been able (or willing) to help.
HTC One S
model Z520m, Android
HBOOT- 2.15.0000
RADIO - 1.11.50.05.28
Open DSP - v31.1.0.45.0815
eMMC - boot
device: ville
build id: JR003C
SDK version: 16
Release: 4.1.1
Incremental version: 133955.7
Does anyone know how to fix this phone?
I suspect that either the firmware installed incorrectly or is the wrong version for the phone.
Does anyone know where to get the correct version of the firmware?
Thank You,
Greg

Connect phone in fastboot mode to your computer, open CMD commandline and type "fastboot getvat all". You will get a log.Delete your IMEI / serial from the log and post it here (The LOG not the IMEI...)

I'll get the link for the matching RUU file for you
There is no matching RUU OTA update is avaiable. Are you familiar with using fastboot commands? DOWNLOAD the OTA. Extract the included firmware.zip and flash it via fastboot. If it works --> good. If not you'll have to change your CID to install a RUU for unbraded versions of the phone.

Thanks for locating the OTA update. I am not familiar with using fastboot commands. Can you link me to a guide or post that explains the procedure.
Thank You,
Greg

Download ADB/fastboot, uninstall HTC Sync. Connect your phone in fastboot mode, open CMD commandline an type:
"fastboot oem rebootRUU"
"fastboot flash zip firmware.zip"
"fastboot flash zip firmware.zip" (AGAIN!)
"fastboot reboot-bootloader"
Then reboot the phone to check if android is running

I followed the steps you provided and the firmware loaded fine and Android is also running. However the phone is still not working properly. The phone was randomly switching between "no service" for several minutes and then to WIND away (roaming) and then to 4G with varying signal strength. I was able to make a brief call while the phone was in 4G mode. Now the phone seems to be stuck with "no service" again. Any ideas as to what could be the problem?
Thanks

Yes You will need to install a FULL system e.g. RUU. The firmware contains all basic partitions of your phone BUT not System, data ... If you tried instaling a OTA update and it failed --> You need a CLEAN installation.

You can't. As least you can't do it by the ormal way, as there is NO stock RUU package available for your phone. You can Unlock the bootloader, set it S-OFF, then you're able to install unbranded or custom software.

I hate to ask any more questions because you have been so helpful in answering all my questions but I would really like to get my phone working again.
How do I go about Unlocking the bootloader, setting it to S-OFF and then installing unbranded software? Also where do I get unbranded software that will work with my phone?

[Q] Stuck at T-Mobile's Stick Together Screen

Today I rooted my sensation using clockwork mod recovery and then installed supersu. It was working fine until I restarted my phone. Now whenever I try to turn it on I get stuck the the t-mobile stick together screen. I tryed factory resetting from the bootloader and nothing happened. Please keep any answers noob friendly. Not good with the technical terms. Thanks
Got this info from this command fastboot getvar all
not sure what it means but figured it would help

Okay so first thing I did was install the clockwork mod thing (it opens when I click recovery in bootloader)
Then I installed SuperSu through the sd card and clockwork
My phone worked fine for a little, but then no apps would open and I clicked reboot and it got stuck at the stick together screen... I tried installing mEMBERS rom to fix it just a few minutes ago, but nothing changed... thanks
More detailed steps
First I unlocked the bootloader with htcdev.
Then I flashed clockwork mod using onex installer tool kit (I think it's something like that)
I put the supersu zip on the ad card
I went into bootloader and went to recovery
I installed the supersu zip using that
Relocked the bootloader
reflash the RUU of tmobile one ..this way you can get the phone in working condition but will lose all the data fine ?
connect the phone from bootloader to pc and then double click on RUU thats all (btw you should relock your bootloader ..which i think you did it )
TMOUS ICS RUU ..here

[Q] OMG, What is Going on

So I have been doing this for a while now and this is the most troublesome phone I have come across and its probably a stupid easy fix or perhaps not fixable at all.
I have an HTC Sensation 4G on Bell in Canada. I got it stuck in a boot loop (nothing in the flash rom obviously). I can get into fastboot and connect to fastboot USB. I am stuck on
HBOOT-1.17.0011
CID BM___001
MID PG5811000
S-ON
Now my issue is that I have downloaded 2 stock 1.35 and 1.45 firmwares from bell (RUU files). Both fail at signature verification. When I try to manually install them I get the same error. When I look in the rom.zip file and open the android-info.txt it has BM___001 for CID and PG5811000 for MID. So why does it fail and how can I get around this.
here is a full getvar all from the device in case it helps

I apologize, please move this to Q and A
First of all edit the first post and erase imei from it.. You should not show imei's
Now to the problem
What error exactly are you getting when ruu failed ?
And also do this..
1.if you unlocked the bootloader... Relock it..
Command is
fastboot oem lock
2. Run the ruu with phone connected in bootloader/fastboot.. If connected properly the phone should say FASTBOOT USB

I am thinking that my bootloader is half my issue actually. I am on 1.17.0011 and does not say Locked or Unlocked. No matter what PG58IMG package I try (my own compiled or found online) it always gives a signature verification error. I cannot flash anything or do any fastboot oem commands like get_identifier_token as they end in a bootloader [ERR] Command Error !!!
So frustrated. I have all the info for the phone and done care abotu s-on or s-off, just want stock back on but even my stock BM___001 RUU packages give me the same signature error. I have tried 3 of them. I am not sure if it matter but I also cannot find out why I am on version 1.34.666 when stock was 1.35.666 when the phone was released. But I assume if I am going up in version that should not matter right?
So bootloader is not locked or at least as far as I know its not, fastboot oem lock gives the bootlader error as well
I have the correct RUU but it says I dont.
I am open to any ideas. If I knew how to run a rift box I would even order one to be honest.
Thanks in advance
Just an update before I go crash for the night.
All RUU exe packages end up stopping at updating signature and go to a screen that says ERROR 132: Please find the correct ROM package for your phone. I am using the ocrrect ROM packages, have check the android text file to ensure that BM___001 is in there and it is. The firmware I am on is 1.34.666.1 and am updating to either 1.35.666.1 or 1.45.666.1.
Getting the rom.zip and putting it in an SD card only ends up with a very long boot in HBOOT as it reads the 400mb file and does nothing after reading it.
Manual install through fastboot gives me an ERROR 12 signature error and asks to find the correct ROM package for my phone as well.
Trying to load ANY PG58IMG into the phone (even to just update the bootloader) gives me the same 132 signature error.
I am on HBOOT-1.17.0011 so there is no locked or unlocked and no fastboot oem commands work, all end with a (bootloader): [ERR] No Command !!!
I have checked 20 times tonight and the CID and MID match the RUU package so what would be the cause of this if anyone has any ideas. I have been over 200 forums regarding tons of HTC phones (not just the HTC Sensation 4G) and nothing has worked. Tried 10 ROM packs from all over the world, all end with 132 error.
Please if anyone has info it would be appreciated.
well as odd as it is, it seems to be ok now. i simply changed the android-info.txt file in the official rom.zip from BM****** to BM___001 and now it works... wow.... thank god though.

AW: [Q] Trying to get HTC one S on stock rom? Please help ?
Tampered: no stock recovery
Unlocked: your bootloader is looked
VLE: Ville: HTC One S
S-ON: security on
Radio: your radio Version
You have to lock your bootloader.
Download the all in one toolkit which you can find in the development section. There are all necessary files.
Be sure you have installed the HTC sync driver.
1. Connect your mobile To your pc when your are in the screen where you can see hboot version etc.
2. There should be "hboot USB" in blue.
3. Navigate to hboot and press power.
4. It should change to "fastboot USB" in red.
5. Then open the all in one toolkit on your PC.
6. Open the folder where ADB and fastboot exe are located.
7. Press shift and right click somewhere in the folder and open the command line.
8. Then type in "fastboot oem lock"
9. If you take a look to your phone you should see that the "unlock" changed To "relocked"
That was the first step.
10. Go To the development section in this forum and look for the wwe europe ville ics ruu 2.31 or sth like that.
11. Download the file
12. Doubleklick the file
13. Follow the instructions
14. Let the ruu install everything
15. If everything works fine you should be on official ICS 4.0.4 with Sense 4.1 now
Good luck!
I hope I wrote an easy understandable instruction.
If u experience any problems feel free to post it here.
I'm sure I or someone else can help you.

glad to hear that I helped you.
Tampered means that someone already changed something on the phone (unlocked/relocked/custom recovery)
A comparison should be.. if you bought a new pc and if you open the case you have to break the seal. The "Tampered" say that you had break this seal on the phone (e.g. by unlocking the bootloader)
S-ON means that the security flags are on. Its a system protection so nobody can manipulate system data.
S-ON + locked bootloader -> you can do nothing, no root, no custom things
S-ON + unlocked bootloader -> you can flash custom recovery, root, custom rom (you can see an unlocked bootloader as a compromise between S-ON and S-OFF
S-OFF -> you can do everything what you want, change bootloaderGUI, bootanimations, splashscreens.
Unlocked means that you bootloader is unlocked. If its locked you cant install custom recovery, root and custom firmware. It has to be locked when you install a RUU.
You cant find your HBOOT version in your phone settings because its the version of the bootloader.
the bootloader is independed from the rom you are on. Its like the BIOS from your PC and your ROM is Win7 where you either cant find the bios version.
Radio is the module which is responsible for mobile data etc.
no/wrong/corrupt radio = no network/no signal
openDSP .. i don't know
eMMC boot, I guess that this is the partition where the bootloader is located.. but I'm not sure.
Mar 21, 2012, 16:01:09 is the date when .. difficult to explain .. when the development of the RUU was finished?
if I wrote something wrong please correct me.
Thanks a lot for this very helpful information. Appreciate your help. Kind of person like you are the reason these forums are running successfully and helping novice people like me. Thanks again.

Hello.
I'm having same problem with getting back on stock firmware...
After trying to flash into CM10, i got stock in CM boot logo.
So trying to get back to original using RUU.
But it just looks like I can not get right one...
I did everything like in posts above, and when I enter "fastboot getvar cid" I got "HTC_Y13"
Any idea which RUU is correct for that?
I'm still trying, so maybe it will be fools luck... Or maybe someone can put me on point?

Hello everyone,
So, 2 days in front of PC, reading forums and trying. No luck... So try to post it here.
I want to flash to CM10.
Bootloader is unlocked.
Recovery is installed (TWRP S4)
Root is done.
Security S-ON.
When I try to install CM10, everything went fine, but when It have to reboot it just stuck in CM booting logo loop...
And since you can't remove memory card on HTC One S, I think I have no other option how to reinstall stock firmware. And my problems starts...
I relocked bootloader.
Download already like five different RUU's...
The problem is, I can not locate my version, it's blank...

(bootloader) commitno-bootloader: dirty-64bedd38
(bootloader) hbootpreupdate: 11
(bootloader) gencheckpt: 0
all: Done!
So everytime I start RUU, in the screen Current information about your Android phone" "Image version" is blank and the one with "Verify that you want to update the ROM version" "From Image Version" is blank...
When I push "Next" it goes "Checking", then "Rebooting Bootloader", "Erasing User Data" and "Sending".
When it comes to "Updating Signature" I'm getting error code...
Phone is bought in Norway, and by checking cid: HTC_Y13, I can see that it's HTC-Nor. So which one of RUU's I have to use?
I also tried to flash zip RUU, using One_S_All-In-One_Kit_v3.5 with same no luck...
Really don't know what to do... Any help would be appreciated...
Thank you in advance!

Does any body can tell me the difference between Ville, VilleC2 and VillePlus?

(bootloader) version: 0.5
(bootloader) version-bootloader: 2.15.0000

(bootloader) boot-mode: FASTBOOT
Thank you, I'm downloading and will try this now:

Firstly, I would recommend removing part of your IMEI and Serial Numbers from your post, it could be used in bad ways by other people.
Ville is the HTC One S with a Snapdragon S4 chipset, clocked at 1.5GHz (dual core) otherwise known as z520e. (You have this phone)
VilleC2 is what became of the HTC One S when HTC ran out of Snapdragon S4 chipsets in many parts of the world due to a shortage. It has a Snapdragon S3, clocked at 1.7GHz (dual core) otherwise known as z560e.
VillePlus is a Special Edition version of the HTC One S, only available in Taiwan. It has the same processor as the Ville, except comes in a white body instead of the normal grey or black options and has 64GBs of internal storage. The other two have 16GBs internal storage. This phone is quite rare.
You should try RUUs only that say ville, and not VillePlus or VilleC2. These won't work and may even irreversibly damage your phone.
OTAs only work when you already have a previous firmware version. Let's say you were on ICS, a Jelly Bean FOTA is released (firmware over the air) and installs ("flashes") on top of your existing ICS installation, keeping your apps and data.
RUUs wipe all data and wipe everything on the phone when installing through a USB connection.
Could you specify what error code you get on the RUUs?
----
The reason why CM10 didn't boot is because you didn't flash the boot.img.
You need to extract the boot.img from the CM10 zip and put that into your "working folder" (the folder with adb and fastboot files in it)
Open up a command prompt / terminal in that folder and type
fastboot flash boot boot.img
when you are in FASTBOOT USB mode in the bootloader.
Go to Fastboot. Plug in your USB with the phone. Now, ctrl and r --> type cmd --> cd to C:/where your adb is --> fastboot read cid
Then type the 8 digit string that you get. It would help us determine your network provider.

[Q] Rooting mistake

Hey guys.
I wanted to root my HTC One S, and I read that the program SuperOneClick was the fastest way of doing it, so I went ahead and connected the HTC to my PC with the USB cable and clicked "root". After like 15 minutes however the program didn't do anything, it just froze and I had to close it. Root Checker Basic said something similiar to no valid root or something. Tried to click "unroot" now so I could start again with a different method, froze again, closed SuperOneClick again. What am I supposed to do now? Is rooting it again safe as I now probably have some half / corrupted root? And can someone link me to the best method? Thanks in advance.

One-click-roots are not suggested...
Did you unlock the bootloader?
Just unlocked the bootloader and flashed cwm, my own fault for using superoneclick. Thanks anyway ;p
Sorry for the double post. I may need some help as I probably bricked(?) my One S.
Didn't do anything root-related for a long time so I think I made a beginner's mistake.
What I did was unlock (htcDEV), and flash CWM recovery.
I tried installing liquid kitkat custom rom, but now it won't boot, not even in recovery.
Help?
EDIT: It's stuck in a boot loop :/

Sorry for the foolish comment but I actually have no idea if it's S4 or S3, how do I find out?
Also what should I do right now? Flash stock rom on it or..?

FIRST you need to know which phone / firmware you got.
Enter fastboot, connect to pc, open CMD and type "fastboot getvar all"
Copy the log and post it here please. Delete IMEI/serial before you post the log. Then i can exactly tell you what you need to install

HTC One S - S4 ville - generic dutch version
You will just need to flash the kernel contained in the rom (boot.img) via fastboot (S-ON means u need to flash kernel manually) to fix your installation
Generally I'd suggest
Flash this recovery via fastboot --> TWRP 2.7.0.8
(its compatible to the lastest CM11 versions 05/01/2014 and newer
And may be try PAC rom (I just love it)

I indeed just flashed the boot.img seperately which was in the rom, and now it works. It's a huge relief to see my phone work again, thanks a lot!!
One more thing so I avoid messing up in the future; When I decide to install another rom, do I always do a factory reset / clear cache, then flash the rom and flash the kernel via fasboot?

Looks like I was cheering too early. Roughly 1 minute after launching my phone, .comSystemGUI or something along those lines stopped working, and whenever I pressed "ok" the message would instantly return. I can't connect my phone to my PC to put another ROM on it since the message won't disappear. Also I tried re-flashing the same ROM, but now it says can't mount storage/sdcard0.
Really frustrating!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206434
This topic guided me into getting the sdcard mountable again, but in the process I lost the rom .zip file.
And my phone won't boot anymore, it doesn't get past the HTC logo, so I can't put a new rom on it and flash it.
What is there left for me to do? Stock rom? How do I find the stock rom?
Thanks in advance.
I figured it out, thanks for your guidance LS.xD!
Basically what I did was mount the SD storage in CWM and transfer Pac-man rom onto the storage, then flash the .zip, flash Gapps and finally in bootloader fastboot the boot.img (because I'm S-ON). Maybe this will help anyone.
EDIT: Someone may wanna be careful with using TWRP, it corrupted my SD storage for a while.

SD card bug can also be caused by CWM or flashing a rom (Viper really loves to brick SD). I never had any issues with TWRP. The only SD card bug I had in over a year flashing roms to my One S was caused by flashing CWM

[HELP] HTC Sensation 4G Bricked?

Hi all! I have a bricked HTC Sensation 4G (T-Mobile) that I am trying to fix.
I need help with RUUing the HTC Sensation 4G. (Z710e)
I believe I have tried everything, all without luck, please help, TIA.
Heres the problem with the phone- It appears to be stuck in a bootloop, boots up to the white HTC screen, makes the HTC startup chime with Quietly Brilliant written under it, and then immediately reboots, and continuously does this over and over again.
Heres what I know about the phone
The Bootloader is Locked
The Phone is S-ON
The CID of the phone is HTC__621
Here's what I've tried
I have tried RUUing the phone with RUU_PYRAMID_ICS_TMOUS_3.32.531.14_Radio_11.69A.3504.00U_11.23.3504.07_M2_release_256085_signed.exe
since it is a T-Mobile HTC Sensation 4G. However I keep getting Error 130: Model ID error.
I also tried RUUing the phone manually using CMD, following the guide however this failed aswell, I kept getting "remote: 12 signature verify fail" at the end.
I also tried renaming extracting the rom.zip from the RUU, renaming that to PG58IMG.zip, placing that on my sd card and booting the phone into bootloader. However when I tried this it said checking PG158.img, but nothing happened, it just continued to boot up to the bootloader.
At this point I realized maybe that this RUU didn't match my CID, which was why it was failing. So I tried opening the ROM.zip file however it said it was corrupt in windows explorer. I then tried redownloading the RUU but it still kept saying ROM.zip was corrupt. I then opening ROM.zip with winrar and it opened up! I then opened android-info.text and saw that the cidnum for the RUU was T-MOB0101. I tried changing this to my CID (HTC__621) and then saving as instructed in this guide, however when I pressed on YES to update the files in the archive, winrar gives an error and says that the archive is corrupt, and does not update android-info.text.
I am not sure what else to try at this point, and I am stumped as to why none of the following methods I've tried worked. Is there something I am doing wrong? Is there anything I'm missing? Any help would be very gladly appreciated, as I am out of ideas.
Also worth noting, I've attached 2 pictures below as attachements to this post, (since I am new to xdadevelopers I cannot post direct links to images), one of the bootloader of the phone, including information such as my hboot version, radio version, etc. in case its needed.
I've also attached a picture below of what happens when I put the phone into HTC stock android recovery and press Factory Data Wipe/Reset. I get a bunch of errors, I'm not sure if this is related to anything but it doesn't look normal, so I attached a picture of it below.
Thanks in advance!

You can access bootloader so no problems here. Unlock bootloader through htcdev. In fastboot mode flash latest 4ext recovery, enable smartflash in settings, then flash a custom rom. You can also try Android Revolution HD rom if you prefer a stock look.

Thanks for the info! However I just tried unlocking the bootloader through htcdev but I keep getting an error at the end "Unlock token check failed". You can see this in the picture I attached below of the command prompt window. Any ideas? I tried resubmitting my unlock token on htcdev to make sure I didn't leave any extra spaces or anything but still got the same result. Thanks

Strange... Make sure you copy and paste right from the beginning to the end. You can also try to move your adb/fastboot folder somewhere else for example to the desktop and try resubmitting the token from there. (Might sound stupid but works sometimes). If not, you need to find the right RUU for your device and RUU it, then follow this guide for s-off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26280760 there are some devices htcdev unlock doesn't work unfortunately... Otherwise I have no other idea, sorry. Somebody might be able to help.

Thanks again for your response, I just did it again this time with my fastboot folder on the desktop, however I still got the same error. How would I find the right RUU for my device? It is an american HTC Sensation 4G from T-Mobile with its CID: HTC__621. I haven't been able to find another RUU for it other than the one I used as previously mentioned in my original post. If anyone has the link to the right RUU I could use for this device, it would be really helpful. Thanks again.

Hi, thanks again for your help! The RUU completed successfully this time!!! However, unfortunately, for some reason it is still bootlooping :/
When I turn it on, it shows the HTC logo, plays the little chime with Quitely Brilliant written under HTC, makes a very silent beep noise, and reboots. It keeps on doing this again and again.
Any ideas on what to do next? Why would the phone do this?

Well, I'm out of ideas now. At least the ruu worked. Try maybe the htcdev unlock again now. Get a new token and submit that. And go for the normal sensation option on htcdev site and NOT for the 4g

UPDATE!! I just got the phone to sorta bootup once! It booted up to a configuring android screen (in japanese) and then it shut right off, and started rebooting again. Why is the phone constantly and randomly rebooting like this? I've heard some people said it was the battery but the battery seemed to hold a fairly long charge in bootloader mode, so I don't see why this would be the issue. Anyways I will try an htcdev unlock now and see if that works, will update soon.
