[Q] Google Maps v8 Offline Maps feature? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding this feature, but I assume, if I save a map to my phone, I should be able to get directions to any location on that map while my phone has no service.
For example, I just saved the entire San Diego county. While currently within that saved zone physically, I turned off my radio and wifi and tried to get directions to a street a few blocks away. This doesn't work. I just get "loading address..." indefinitely. What in the world is the point of offline maps if it does not work offline? Am I missing something here?

Pretty sure directions will depend on a connection but you can save the map itself.

No. It saves the map itself to save your data connection while driving. But the directions still need a connection as they incorporate traffic details

Thanks for the clarification... that's kind of silly IMO. Offline navigation needs to be added to make this feature worthwhile. There has been times while traveling where I need navigation and I have no reception. I then have to spend forever driving around looking for either public wifi or service.

I agree and a mph/kph speedo display and traffic speed cameras would be awesome too

You would need maps of every single street downloaded and that isn't really ideal for an app rather than an actual GPS. They probably don't want to fill up storage too quickly for older devices either.

Devices with low storage have removable SD cards, the devices that do not have SD Cards have between 8GB - 32GB of space, way more than enough for saving map data for the entire country or even just the state you're in.

They probably want you to buy a full GPS device anyways. Google has other reasons why they probably don't want to.

Well of course they don't want us to, it isn't hard to implement. It all comes down to the single fact of Data Mining. If we could navigate offline then Google will not get our usage information.

On older devices it would be a problem, my Xperia Arc S only has around 400mb internal and an 8gb SD card which gets filled pretty quick with apps/data Then as stated above, Google wants you to have connection so they can use it in their services/etc

Based on my experience with the app on my 3gS, the advantage to this would be having the maps stored locally on the phone. Therefore you have some level of dead reckoning and aren't relying on your data connection to supply map data. AFAIK, gps is way more reliable connection wise than data. So with this app even if you have poor or no signal, the app can still work if there's gps.
What was there spport like?
I really would like to have lane assistance wich as far as i know google does not...neither does sprint.
I bought NAVIGON and their support SUCK. Don't waste your money. Their app sucks too.

Ya, if you are traveling local that's probably not an issue, but if you are traveling across states - it's likely that you will hit dead spots in your 3g or 1x coverage even and that means no google maps.

[Q] What GPS software do you use?

Well is obvious. Since it's qhd i can't use igo anymore, so what do you use (besides maps and htc locations)

There are some premium features such as traffic camera alerts, real time traffic incidents and re-routing, speed limits with optional alerts, and lane assistance for $3 a month, but you can still get turn by turn voice navigation and local search stuff for free. I use it because sometimes Google Navigation won't lock onto my gps, even though I'm locked onto 8 satellites.

Will HTC Locations be a possibility after the unlock?
Now I use google maps and nav because I am in the US. I have navigon installed as well and that is my backup. The backup to that would be the telenav of course. In the past I have used mapquest which is free in the market but I am unsure if you can use it across the pond.

Google maps/nav works great wherever you are, however if you are roaming, you are looking at some serious data charges.
Thats why people look for nav apps with maps already saved to SD card, no need to download anything....
Also if you have ever been stuck somewhere with no reception or just GPRS, and waiting for it to connect, download etc you sure appreciate a standalone solution!
Also with standalone apps, you can add a lot of usefull stuff like speedcamera POIs etc, which I havent seen for Gmaps yet.

Google Maps has POI. Just search for whatever you want. There's also Places, which is part of Google. But I haven't seen speed cams in Google. Someone else may correct me on that.
So far I haven't found one perfect solution for offline walking and driving nav. Gaia is online, and also allows downloading user definable map segments for offline. However, it doesn't seem to do any sort of intelligent routing.
I've also used CoPilot, but it's very mixed. It is offline, but US maps are not so great. Don't know about international maps. The UI to me is a bit cartoonish.
If Google would add the ability to download user definable map sections it would be a major advantage.
I'd really like to try Locations, but at this point that seems unlikely for US phones.
Regarding roaming when traveling abroad I buy a local SIM whenever possible. Can be a major saving, and works well. Can take some effort to find a good deal, and get everything set up, but if you are in a country long enough it can be very worthwhile. I got a 3G data SIM in Paris last year that was unlimited for under 20 Euros for a month. Used 3G all over the city and it worked great.

Interesting concept, but a few weaknesses pop up right off.
Doesn't look like it's got hardly any maps outside US and Canada. Just checked a couple of spots in my neighborhood and there are map errors that are years old. Also, appears to require data access. Does it do walking routes with compass?

In my original post "speedcamera POIs" was meant as one thing. ie a POI for speed cameras, not speedcameras AND POIs.
Although agree with you that the Places, and other POIs in GMaps is great, and I do miss it while traveling and not using a data connection.

Is there anything better free then google maps?

Ok, I about tired of google maps sending my on overly long routes and forcing me to main freeways and highways no matter if there is a shorter way or not and giving me altogether wrong routes.
I tried using it today and it literally backtracked me to about 5 miles from where I left from while trying to avoid traffic, while putting me right in the traffic I was trying to avoid in the first place.
Ive found that using it as a "assistant" in areas I already know its ok, but if I actually need it to fine me a route that in the least bit tricky it usually fails miserably.
Is there a better free app out there or at least a way to make google maps any better?
TeleNav for Sprint subscribers...
Check out MapQuest as well... it has free turn by turn IIRC.
I was enjoying waze for a bit till it tried to sending me down a few 1 ways the wring way. It was a rather confusing set of streets though. Chinatown gets a bit rough.

[Q] Does Location Reporting have any benefits?

Hi all,
In the past location reporting has been known to drain a considerable amount of battery. However with the recent release of Google Play Services 4.1, it is suppose to resolve that issue.
I've had location reporting disabled up until the update. Google Now is also active & has been working just fine without it.
So the question:
Are there any benefits in having location reporting enabled? (Apart from the obvious, sending data to Google).
In terms of Google Now, Maps, extra functionality?
Also has anyone noticed any increase in battery drain?
I actually leave it set at stock settings with my usage.
I'm seeing normal battery times on my phone too, no overheats or sudden drops from using like that I've witnessed.
Give it a try full on for a couple days and check if your losing extra juice and or getting same volume of info from now.

Nexus 5 on no data / low data plan.

Anyone here use their Nexus 5 on a prepaid cellphone plan that has no data or low data?
I am thinking about switching over to h2o's Unlimited Talk, Text and 500mb plan to save money and become less dependent on my cell phone. I find myself using about 5 GBS a month on straight talk but its nothing productive, just downloading the latest roms or downloading an app only to delete a few minutes later or checking facebook. I think I could get by fine just using wifi and then the 500MB to check email or use my GPS.
Thoughts?

Like you download an app just to see or to test, you can download a rom and flash it to test, right?
That being said, for the OP, not sure a low data plan will make you less "dependent" (maybe good for money), if you have access to wifi? You can always download all the last roms via wifi
It will depend of your real use apart downloading rom, maybe it will be enough with only GPS (again it depends the frequency of use, GPS can be a huge consumer of data ) and email...

I mean dependent in terms of using the phone when I am out in about in public where wifi isnt available. I have no guilt about using my phone when I am sitting at home on the couch watching TV but it will deter the urge to browse the web when I am out with friends or something.

Telling someone they need to find a hobby usually implies that you think someone doesn't have a life.
PS it takes literally 5 minutes to download and flash the latest nightly of cyanogemod. I am not downloading a miillion different roms each month. Just staying up to date.
edit: also and saying "no offense" before saying something offensive isn't a hall pass to say something rude.
What's the issue here "Nexus 5 on no data / low data plan." or hobbies.....let's end the hobby discussion. Thanks
Only issue I can think of is that most of the Google Now voice commands seem to require an internet connection to work.

I am also on a limited data plan (400mb /mo) and find it kind of limiting. What i use is DS battery saver which turns off your data while your screen is off and turns it on every 30/45/60min for updates. It saves me some data and some battery so it's a win/win for me. I tend to limit my data navigation to mail/facebook and messaging apps and keep the cat gifs/videos for wifi/pc.
Another app you can try is onovo extend (it compresses the internet traffic trough their servers) but i found it a bit fiddly (never know if it's working or not and need to check it constantly) and i suspect it interferes with some apps (had a problem with my maps app but dont quote me on that).
Opera browser also compresses traffic for reduced data use.
Other than this, only your common sense and self control can bring your data use down. Being prepaid can't you buy more data anytime if you need it ?

I don't download much but still using 2gb a month - maybe go for 3 gig and see how that goes? 500mb is nothing nowadays.
I think unless you actually turn the data off, you'd struggle to stay under a 500GB a month allowance. Having seen what mine does on a day when I Fine really use it, id be concerned. You'd definitely need to tweak your sync settings and/or turn off data. Possibily even use opera browser or similar to compress your web pages.
Managing that plan sounds like too much of a chore

I have a voice and text only plan using WiFi when I need the type of downloads you describe. If I want to watch videos or listen to Music I carry a Meenova OTG micoSD card reader (check the N5 accessories section) and preload the files I need. I consider most of the data plans to be a huge consumer ripoff and am not willing not shell out the bucks for a minor convenience. My comments are definitely personal choice and there are so many WiFi hot spots around the impact of not always having Internet access hasn't hit me yet.

I think this comes down to region too (pricing I mean).
In the UK you can get 200 minutes, 5000 texts and truly unlimited data for £12.90 a month (sim only). £15.90 if you want 600 minutes.

Why do you have to download ROMs and apps over 3G? Don't you have wireless at home?
I can easily survive a month with 500MB, while checking my e-mail a few times a day (about 10 e-mails over 5 syncs), checking a few tens of articles over feedly and reading at least 5-10 of them, playing 8 Ball Pool (by Miniclip) at least on hour, using Waze for at least half an hour and other occasional searches. I only install apps over 3G on rare occasions (once a week at most), and when I cannot wait until I get home. And sometimes I'm wondering how could I wisely use more data, not to pile it up at the end of the month.
But that's just me...
Both me and my wife manage fine on a 250mb monthly plan. Over 3G we only need the odd update for the weather app and the usual Whatsapp photos and videos, from other family members. Whilst the photos and vids do consume most of that meagre allowance it still works out fine. The videos will get downloaded when at home and using the wi-fi connection.
Knowing that we are "restricted" on a tight data plan (but managing fine) it does tend to discipline me to no longer bother about using the phone more "frivolously", in terms of data usage, and I suppose when I'm at home I'll use my tablet or PC, much bigger screens etc.
Neither of us feel restricted in our use, and it works out much cheaper, but it does focus the attention away from the phone and the habitual data usage which was neither important nor needed.
