Fast notepad, available on google play, it is tiny, 1-2 megabytes, it saves it's txt files in the fast notepad folder somewhere, but the file name are the date on which the file was made.
On another note, you could use es file explore, which is NOT light, but extremely useful, and has the option to create a new text file, just by pressing the "new+" button on the bottom bar and choosing file, it is like using a pc, except that "file" can only make txt files.
Press Thanks if I helped!!!

Download root browser, it comes with a great txt and XML editor

'Jota text editor' less than 1 MB would be the best choice..

Thanks... I'll get it.

Icons for folders? (and possible discovery)

Is it possible to make icons for our folders in the apps menu?
I opened the Office Mobile folder and there was a .ink file with the office icon. I moved it to another folder (named Utilities) and this folder now had the office folder icon. Any hint of how this could be used?
well, windows mobile has a special folder design, no?
Good job on the discovery.
You could probably create custom folders for apps.
It is really very simple.
It's not ink its lnk, a shortcut file. If you manage to open it in text editor you will see a simple text string pointing to a dll, exe or ico file.
WM looks for a shortcut named 'icon.lnk' in folders and if it finds it will assign the folder the icon shortcut is pointing to.
You can look to windows\start menu\programs\games for an example of such file.
Also make sure it has the 'hidden' attribute or you will see it when opening the folder from start menu.
So it was lnk with an "L"? When I opened the file with word, it was pointing to a DLL file and it didn't open quite well with Word.
Thanks for the highlight, I'll try making icons
I might post them later.
I'm having more trouble to find free glossy folder icons than anything else...
Alright, I tried once, failed. Trying again and again!
Yes thats Lnk with "L" as in lamp (sorry, habit picked up from phone customer support)
Do not use Word or any other fancy editor as they do not handle plain text files well and may shove some garbage in there when you save the file.
Use notepad or even dos edit command.

Ok I'll try that, thanks!
EDIT: I found a thread on brighthand that says only DLL files can be used as a source. Then if I'm not mistaken you must specify the code line where the icon is situated. The best solution would be to make a really small app with an icon then use this icon.
I'd try it right now but some piece of **** called ActiveSync refuses to work for a random reason.
EDIT 2: Activesync fixed, now working with a ressource editor and some DLLs to get it all working
Simply copy the .lnk to your desktop (PC). use notepad to editi t.
1. open notepad
2. open file xyz.lnk ....simple.
Alright, here's my progress:
-Downloaded a copy of shellres.dll, the location of the existing icons (because you can't take it from the phone)
-Using Ressource Hacker, I changed the icons (in Icons Group) for iPhone icons (other free icons aren't nice)
-Now I copy the edited shellres.dll to the Windows folder (didn't work elsewhere)
-I make a copy of a icon.lnk file in every folder I want to see the icons of and edit the ressource number to match the one in the DLL.
Here's a standard icon.lnk file: 1#SHELLRES.dll,-8216
Translated to: 1#[location of the dll],-[ressource number]
And edited to: 1#iconpack.dll,-8210
Screenshots coming soon.
Now the only problem is that the whole process is not automated. I don't know much about programing so I can't make a program that makes .lnk that points to the right icon.
There you go! What do you guys think?
BTW it only shows up in 256 colors, which is bad considering how nice the icons were...
EDIT: The whole thing is 1.4 freaking MB in size, so I gotta find icons that come in 32x32 instead of full packs including vista icons. Each icon was 80kb in size...
Try GIMP. It's free (open source) and it can edit icons. I didn't check if it can manage the different images that are packed in a single ico file but its worth a try.
I have gimp but I suck at using it. Anyway those icons are perfect for me but don't hesitate to ask for help to install your own.

One option is to have a shortcut Folder set on your screen that launches a file manager and takes you directly to that folder.
The free app ES File Explorer will allow you to create a shortcut.
1. Install ES File Explorer.
2. Open the app and navigate to the folder you want to create as a shortcut.
3. Press & Hold on the folder, from the menu that pops up select 'Shortcut'.
4. Quit the app and when you go back to the last Home Screen you were on, providing there is enough space you will now notice a new icon with the title of the folder you selected.
From now on whenever you wish to show your clients the material simply click on the folder icon on your Home Screen and it will take you directly to ES File Explorer the folder with all the contents shown.
This last bit is important......
When you select the first item you will notice a small window will pop up asking you if you wish to choose ES File Explorer or the Gallery app to display your material... Choose ES File Explorer.
The reason is if you choose Gallery it will only display that one single item and you have to go back to ES File Explorer to show the next and so on....
By instead choosing ES File Explorer as the method to display the material it instead shows you not only the material but as the bottom you will also notice a small thumbnail of each of the pictures.
To display a different picture either swipe left/right or tap on the thumbnail.
Job done....
thanks Beards,
great advice..
I am using it plus Android picture frame.. that lets me set up 4 3x3 widgets that load into the file system as well..
plus yours.. gives me a neat screen of fast get too's for client visits..
which in my case can be up to 6-8 in a big day..

[Q] Looking for widget that displays text.

I'm looking for a widget that can access a text file that is located on my phone or dropbox and display the contents of the file. It should always update itself as soon as there is a change in the text file.
Did anyone come by an app like this?
This sounds like a niche widget, and I honestly doubt you'll find something to do this. U can maybe try keeping the contents of the textfile in a notepad type app which has a widget, and maybe import/export to text functionality? This is probably the best u can do

Shortcut to a file?

Gooooooooooood morning
How to create a shortcut to a Excel file? I have made a special excel sheet to calculate many thing (temperature conversion, tax, microsoft points, etc.).
The file is on the tablet, but I don't know how to create a shortcut into the tablet. Right now I need to open Polaris, browse for the file, open the file... What I want to do is only start the file from the "desktop" of the tablet in one click.
Possible or not?
Thanks alot!
On my Asus are installed: X-plore ( manager, excellent and free) and Go launcher Ex (ibidem). So in Go Launcher ex select Add, then Shortcut, Then Add Shortcut (with X-plore icon). The X-plore is opened and browse to your file. Check the file, (on the right side of the file is check mark) and then press OK from bottom right of the screen.
The easiest way is download es file manager, find the file you want, long press on it and choose shortcut. Then it'll be on your home screen.

How to create/modify snote templates?

The templates that come with snote have fields like date and time and other such objects not available within snote itself. The templates that are pre-packaged are nice but I would like to add others.
How do you create snote templates? Is there an app for this? Is there a how-to that details the extra features that you can put in a template?
+1
Also the possibility of using your own pictures as background would be great

Just wondering if anyone has worked out how to change the included templates yet?

For the Templates Background to be change, the images in the "template_custom_bg_q1" folder inside the apk need to be changed. It contains all the backgrounds for SNote.
For complete templates, you need to create SNB files and place them in folder assets\templates.
Not sure if this is in the Galaxy Note (phone) version of S-Notes but in the Note 10.1 (8013) there is an option to import your own image as a background file. Not sure about how to get the input fields to work but you can import a new image.
How to create a S-Note Template from a PDF file
When I imported pdf files, I just started Snotes, the app, not a new note, and under the menu picked import. Choose the pdf file but if you get the box that asks what to use to open it, ignore it, click on the screen with your pdf, make sure the file is selected and choose done up at the top. you'll magically go back to the snote screen with your pdf document showing. In order to save it, you'll have to at least make a mark and then can erase it so the save option will be available. When it's the blank you'd like to save to use each time, you can name it and save it as it is. Just be careful that whenever you open it to start a new blank, you need to rename the changed document so it doesn't overwrite your blank form. If it's helpful, when you're ready to save the 'template' open the menu and choose set as shortcut. That will give you the fresh template on your home screen. I put several running notes on my home screen that way and a blank 'template' - an Snote the way I like it set up. Just be careful not to overwrite it as I've accidently done a few times. Now I have extra blank copies.
