Hi Guys, I wanted to know the steps for installing a custom rom via TWRP Recovery in a 100% clean way , I don't want any residue of old rom .
What's the best way to have a custom rom installed in the cleanest way ? (No old files no nothing)
I installed the rom cm11 doing this :
1 factory reset, 2 cache, 3 dalvik cache, 4 system ,5 data, 6 flash install rom and gapps , 7 before rebooting wipe cache and dalvik.
Well 1 does 2, 3 and 5 anyway.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
just wipe data and flash your rom(and gapps). flashing a rom automatically wipes your cache and dalvik, so it does not need to get done again.
It's worth noting some roms updater-scripts will backup some elements in system and restore them during the flash (example slimkat) so a format of system may need to be done in some circumstances

Thanks for your help, sorry for disturbying I wanted to know are this folder essentials or can they be deleted?
Thanks
Personally, when I move to a new ROM I wipe everything. In TWRP under Wipe, I chose advanced and check everything. After, go back to the wipe menu and select the option on the right to format data. It will require you to type "yes" in the box. When it finishes, I reboot recovery, and use ADB Sideload to install my ROM of choice.
A few warnings, this wipes all data, so make sure anything you wish to save has been backed up. Also, make sure ADB is installed and working correctly as it will be your only way to get a custom ROM transferred to your phone.

That's a little over kill. I've never had a problem just using twrp's default swipe to wipe. You also must not use tibu and restore all your apps from Google

Yeah, no need to wipe internal SD.....at all.
Adb us unnecessary as well.
Download ROM on phone, flash from internal SD.

Hi,
if the upgrade to ICS is available i want to do a full wipe with factory reset before.
How is the best way and in which order is best to do a full system cleansing with stock rom 2.3.6 installed.
First deletion of SD Card an than over the recovery menu resetting the rest?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
I'm no expert but why would you delete the sdcard?
Root, install CWM recovery via rom manager. Select if you have 4g or not.
load rom onto root of the sdcard
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Flash rom
If you want to install a custom kernel instead of the one that comes with your rom of choice
After you flash the rom
Go back and rewipe dalvik
Then flash kernel
Reboot and enjoy

There's no point in wiping the dalvik twice, and instead of wiping the dalvik in CWM I'd use dalvik-wiper.zip by Morfic. Flashable zip, and it actually wipes the dalvik.
The rest is all good to the best of my knowledge.
Full wipe with GB stock rom before upgrade to ICS
Hi,
@polobunny
on the SD memory are two folders named .android_secure and Android where Android specific things are stored in. I have read that for a new and clean system build up would be good to delete this folders before.
@sookieball
I have only the normal stock rom 2.3.6 with stock recovery (no CWM) and want to stay there.
So then I think the best way is to go over the menu and do a reset to the factory settings. Delete the to folders on the SD memory manually and afterwards I will go into the recovery menu and delete the dalvik cache and then apply the ICS update.
Why i want to to this? I have at the moment a lot of useless Apps installed and i want to refresh all and start with a clean system with upgrading to ICS. Thats all.
Wherever you read that you should stop reading there.
I've been using 4EXT Touch Recovery to wipe/format before flashing certain roms. Is there a right way on how to wipe/format using 4EXT Touch?
This is how I do it (correct me if I'm wrong):
1. wipe date/factory reset
2. wipe cache
3. wipe cache + dalvik
4. wipe dalvik cache
5. wipe battery stats
6. format system
7. format data
8. format boot
9. format all partitions (except sdcard)
10. format sdcard
11. flash rom

If you are flashing an update of the same ROM do "wipe dalvik cache + cache" (in case the Developer has not clearly stated that the update requires full wipe)
If you are flashing a new ROM use "wipe all partition (except sdcard)" it will do all the wipes from the wipe menu, no need to repeat it
And wiping the sdcard every time you install a ROM clearly does not make any sense, you are deleting all you pictures, music and all other files that are not related to any ROM you are using

I didn't know that "format all partition (except sdcard)" is the same from 1 to 8. I'll try using it from now on every time I install new roms. Also, I thought that wiping my sdcard every time I install rom is to make that rom fully utilized/functional. And that is why I back up all my pictures, music, and all other files in my laptop. Anyhow, thank you for your simple but very relevant response.
There are some ROM specific files on the SDcard but a full wipe (all partitions except sdcard) clears them too

Hi Everyone,
For some reason, TWRP is not able to format /Data.
It keeps saying "failed to mount /data (Device or resource busy)".
This doesn't prevent me from updating the ROM to 4.4.2-21.
However, once updated it keeps on booting over-and-over.
Is there a way to - sort-of - a forced format of the internal flash.
Or at least the /data partition as it seems to be corrept.
Thanks - Will
Hi,
With twrp use the wipe menu for installing kk 4.4.2
Wipe cache-dalvik cache-data-system-internal storage (if you need a complete clean install), after install menu, flash the rom and the gapps, return to wipe menu, wipe cache and dalvik cache again.reboot.you`ll run on the new rom
(Ps : don't used mount sd and format menu).

Thanks for the (quick) response.
I'm coming from 4.4.2-19. However, on previous occasions I was able to upgrade without going through a clean install.
So I tried the same this time with 4.4.2-21. However, as it stands, this release tends to end up in an ever on-going boot sequence.
Even a clean install or going back to the previous version (4.4.2-19) doesn't work.
Compared to previous installs, the only difference I can see is an error stating that /data can not be wiped.
Any thoughts on this behavior?
Thanks - Will

Tried formatting the data partition. It comes back with "failed" - no explanation.
Any other suggestion?
I'll try to explain myself before people jump at me. I saw another thread with same question but seems like people misunderstood the question.
I am not talking about "lack" of memory, or not having another 32/64gb availble, etc.
I'll give you an example to what I am referring to:
Recently I decided that my rooted S2 needs a little 'refreshing', meaning - not just a wipe, but a complete format, to start from scratch. So I formatted everything, including /system and /emmc partitions. I then re-booted to recovery and had my rom file on the SD card so i was able to get a clean install.
Now, the question is - say I am at a stage when I need to 'refresh' the phone and wipe everything out. How do I then access the rom file for new install if I don't have external SD Card?
Thanks.
with adb.
What I do when I want a clean start, is I will load the rom/gapps/kernel to my phone, go to recovery, factory reset (with system if you choose), then flash all the things you want, then go back and wipe internal storage after. Then you're left with a fresh version of the ROM you want to install and no files whatsoever in the memory. Hope that helps.
I had the same suspicions a while ago. Basically with the nexus 5, even without an external sd, you can still do a full wipe of everything other than your storage. There is a path on the internal storage which essentially acts like an sd card, and when doing wipes in recovery it will not be wiped, unless of course you specifically choose to format /sdcard or all of /data. Read here for more info. I found that explanation very helpful.
So to answer your question, no, its not an issue.

I have the same issue, with my OCD, that I always need a complete wipe of EVERYTHING.
One option, I recommend if that's not an option at the time of flash, is to simply "reset" in settings. It clears out the whole SD, which is something I usually want to do when I want a FULL flash

Reset in settings just uses recovery unless something changed I haven't realised?
It should be down to what recovery you have (stock vs custom) as to whether a reset (regardless of how you initiate it) wipes /sdcard or not... or are you saying that's changed now?

Problem with factory reset, as far as I know, is that it does not wipe out everything. When I do factory reset in my S2, I still see old folders (even though empty) from before the wipe. That's why I like to format everything clean. When I mean clean, I don't want to see any old folder in there

Android Debug Bridge. It allows you to communicate with your phone via command line tools.
You would keep the rom somewhere on your internal storage (data/media) just like you would on any other phone. Then after wiping, you would simply choose to install zip from sdcard and your rom, along with any other flashable zip on your sdcard will be available to install. Basically when you do a typical full wipe from a custom recovery, the contents of your internal storage/sdcard are not wiped.

Lately, I've noticed that it wipes the Data as well. Unless It was only on CWM that it happened? I had installed CM11 with CWM and wanted to reset my SD. I used the reset feature and it erased everything, except the OS

I would flash the Rom first, then do the factory reset, the only downside is the nandroid you made may be lost, unless you uploaded it to GDrive or something.

3. Rooting
Now that your phone has an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery installed you have a two options to gain root (Pick one or the other. You don't need to do both)
Option A) Flash SuperSU binaries which will give you root with the stock rom
Confirm that you have downloaded the SuperSU zip from the downloads section above and that it is located in the platform-tools folder inside of the android-sdk-windows folder on your desktop.
Turn the phone off then boot into the bootloader. (volume down + power). Once in the bootloader use the volume rockers to scroll onto Recovery Mode, then press power to select it. This should bring you into your newly installed custom recovery. Leave the phone at the home page of the custom recovery.
Open a command prompt window and run the following commands:
Code:
cd Desktop/android-sdk-windows/platform-tools
Code:
adb push UPDATE-SuperSU-v[COLOR="Red"]X[/COLOR].[COLOR="red"]XX[/COLOR].zip /sdcard/
This will copy the SuperSU zip onto your phone. Once the command has completed continue.
Instructions for TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP):
Install > browse to SuperSU zip and select the it
Swipe to confirm the installation. Then reboot.
Click to collapse
It shows how to "Push" a file to your phone. That is the best way, IMO. But instead of SuperSU, just "adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/"

Flashing the rom? Its honestly not any more complicated than flashing a rom for any other device. You download the rom to your internal storage. Boot into recovery. Then do a full wipe:
TWRP Full Wipe:
- Wipe
- Advanced wipe
- Select all, except internal storage
- Swipe to wipe
CWM Full Wipe:
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- advanced > wipe dalvik cache
- mounts and storage > format /system
Finally you can then flash the rom (and gapps).

It's not really and if you're rooting and flashing any device, adb is essential knowledge.
Once you've installed adb (millions of guides on the net) you just boot into recovery then connect to pc via usb.
adb commands are run from cmd prompt.
For example...
adb push c:\users\sbi1\desktop\rom.zip /sdcard
Would push the file on your windows desktop called rom.zip to your sdcard.
You can even sideload from recovery.
Or better yet,.just don't wipe /sdcard. It has no benefit other than looking tidy anyway

Wow, that could be a problem. I found this article that might work. http://www.digitalreborn.com/fix-samsung-galaxy-unable-mount-efs/
One other thing that I thought of was to Odin back to stock, but that might not work if what I said above didn't. So I would recommend looking at the link above.

Ignore what I just said about re-flashing stock with Odin.
efs is a partition on the phone's internal memory that is used to store important information (like the IMEI - the unique serial number of the phone). It's not accessible to a normal user and shouldn't get corrupted under regular use.*
With all of that said, you're apparently having such a problem, but I'm pretty sure that simply rewriting the firmware isn't going to fix this - that partition isn't included in the stock firmware files.
