[Q] Going from 4.0.3 to 4.4/4.3 performance - HTC Sensation

I'm using the Virtuous Inquisition rom with android 4.0.3. if I go to a rom with 4.3 or 4.4 will performance increase or decrease? also, can I keep my settings and apps or do I have to start fresh?
thanks.

You will need to full wipe and reinstall everything again.
I've never used Virtuous Inquisition, so I don't know about performance, but latest 4.4 roms we have are really smooth. If you want to test, just make a backup of your current setup, then install any new. If you don't like it you can always restore to your old setup.
Though since most roms we have are based on cyanogenmod, most of them have a bug at the moment causing the system to freeze or maybe restart. Only 4.4 rom (which I know) which isn't affected by that is omnirom.

thanks. i may try that rom then since I need stability. why dont other roms like this one mention freezing under the bugs?

It's an upstream bug from cyanogenmod itself and I think they list mostly bugs which they can fix. We still hope that cm is going to fix that soon.

how does omnirom compare to cyanogenmod besides the freezing bug. is one faster than the other? why would anyone use cm over omnirom? thanks.

Well both are based on aosp, so I don't think there is a big difference in performance. Cyanogenmod has more settings than omnirom, but I think differences are not that big. There are some settings only the one rom or the other has, so I think you should just try.

[Q] Recommended *non 3.4* kernel and rom?

I have used Dark Jelly, Illusion, and CM 10.1 (and loved them) all with the 3.4 kernel. I am aware of the data turning off issue. When I first started using the roms it would only disconnect once a day or so. Couple weeks later it was multiple times a day. Now it is almost never on and it keeps saying my simcard is not inserted. So I was looking for a non 3.4 kernel and rom to go with it!
Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. I'll check it out.
I know that is not AOSP based like CM, but after ad enough of the connection drop issues of CM, I flashed MIUI... it's enough fast, it's nice, has no major bugs, it's well updated and has no connection drop issues

Well unfortunately, the VN6 puts me in bootloop because Carbon is a 3.4 rom. I found an older version of Carbon, 1.7, that will work on the the VN6 (at least it looks like it will). I am going to try Bubba's 3.4 kernel with carbon first and see how my data connection is. I've seen people saying that they have fixed their issue by adjusting the build.prop but I'm unsure how to do that. I should maybe update my radio? I'm on 1.13.50.05.31

Running stock 4.1.2.. What is most stable to flash?

Is 4.1.2 the latest VZW published version?
I'd like to get to 4.3 or 4.4.. what is the most stable ROM that i can flash that won't cause me to lose any features like GPS or Bluetooth?

For TW 4.1.2 is the most current, but developers are working on 4.3. Otherwise, I would flash an AOSP ROM & I've had good luck on those too.

Gummy and SlimKay have full GPS and Bluetooth capabilities. The unofficial CM builds are FAR more stable than the official ones, so if you must use CM, go with an unofficial like Mastamoon or KitKang.
HOWEVER... every custom rom has issues with a 'kill signal' with Bluetooth, so if you use BT, you need to make sure you power down the other device, before you try to turn off BT on your phone; that will send the signal to your device and unpair the two. Otherwise, your phone won't be able to reconnect to BT on that device and you'll have to reboot. It's a known bug and people are working on it.
I used Gummy all December and now I'm running SlimKat... they're stable for daily use. I'd recommend a custom kernel with Slim, though... I'm using Lean Kernel.

Why would an unofficial cm be more stable? From reading the descriptions, it's just cm with a couple of visual tweaks, no?

Recent CM nightlies are highly unstable and there's often they'll put out a build with a commit they later revert. The unofficial builds vary... some don't release every night (avoiding those bad commits), others cherry-pick and are able to avoid commits they don't think are necessary (and are what often wonk up a build). Basically, they're more fine-tuned for our specific device (the CM builds are just pushed out auto-build) and tend to perform better.
If you look at the feedback in the 'official' thread, then compare that to the unofficial threads, you'll see far more issues in the official one. Could be more noobs going to CM's official builds because it's considered safer, but I've seen some veteran flashers have the same issues, so I'm inclined to believe it's due to how they push out nightlies.
... but that's just my observation. Take it for what it's worth.

That's a reasonable explanation. I'm on CM11 official nightly. I usually read the changelog before I update. I did do a full wipe before updating originally and I've been running very well. I've had 1 random boot in about a week and the camera froze the system once. I had many more random reboots on TW. It's incredibly fast and I've got no lag (that was a bad problem for me on 4.1.2).
Nice one... checking the changelog and/or Gerrit commits is a good practice, IMO. I only flash a nightlie if I find some commits I think would make the rom run better for me... most are small things like language tweaks and updates to other device repos, so flashing the newest version isn't always necessary.
Regarding the random reboots, you probably have the same modem issue I do. There was a recent update to the device RILs that completely resolved the modem 'freakout' i kept having; I believe they used the updated device files from the 4.3 stock builds pushed out, so it made the device more compatible with the 4.3 and 4.4 roms.

if you like touchwiz, MOAR and Wicked Sensations roms (4.1.2) are pretty good. I'm on cm10.2 (4.3.1) with xposed framework and it's running perfectly. I'm staying away from kitkat cause of all the bluetooth issues.

[Q] lets make a list of ROMS for TeamWin Recovery Project 2.7.1.0(kitkat Bootloader))

Can we start a list of sorts with Roms that work with the new bootloader?? so far i read that Dhacker29 has a few test builds of cm11 . i have one installed right now and it has some bugs but works and is faster than my hd has ever been . i can run this game i like and before it couldnt play without lagging now it runs crazy fast . anyway thank you Dhacker29 for the recovery and rom. i was reading another site and someone mentioned another dev that had a test build out for the new recovery but i cant for the life of me find or remember who it was. also how can i tell if a rom will work without trying to install it. i read that the kernel had to be 3.5 and newer or some shshhsh. anyway thanks in advance to anyone that responds
I second this. Was actually thinking of suggesting the same thing. Might help keep people from flashing the JB kernel Roms and asking what they did wrong. Least maybe a bit more.

Any stable builds? Maybe some that use stock and then tweak it out.
i think you can install the stock files and then root and use a root app manager to remove all the bloatware from your phone. there is even a thread that tells you all the apps you can get rid of without jacking anything up. here you can check it out

after root you can download xposed installer and then download one of the customizing modules and you can then change your icons in the status bar. nav bar, even alter the way your toast messages come in . anything you can think change the color of your wifi and 4g icons or change them to something entirely diff . here check that out too . you probably already know all this already but just in case.

Gummy rom tested on my xt925. Stuck at unlocked bootloader sign. I don't think xt925 is supported yet.
Yeah I don't know if any have xt925 support or not. Hopefully they will include them eventually.
Gummy Rom
I recently tried Gummy Rom for 3.4 kernel. It was pretty good, but had trouble with bluetooth freezing the phone and wifi dropout at times. It has great progress, and appreciate those who are working on it. :good:
I have installed dhacker's 4.4 cm build from 24/6. Happy to report that it boots - and so far, at least - works great. This is on an xt925! It's the first 4.4 bootloader rom other than moto that I have got to actually boot up on this phone.
I installed gummy and have been using the auto updater running nightlies right now I'm running 6-24 build . it seems like the the previous ver. had fixed the screen dimming issue but it seemed to come back on this ver. but rarely happens I haven't tied Bluetooth yet and the popping/static sound issue is still there but other than that I like the rom . thanks for

In droidrzr forums there is an Unofficial Omni Rom for kitkat bootloader..
btw, for xt925, dhacker says that we only need the new bootloader (maybe installing the leaked soak test from France we can use the newest roms)

Reinstall CM11S without GAPPS preadded?

I am looking to see if there is a build of CM11S without gapps pre added to the rom so that I can use the customizable GAPPS package to remove unwanted app packages such as TTS, talkback, quickoffice, soundsearch, play movies, play games and so on.
You could download the recovery flashable version of the CM11S build from CM directly and delete the files prior to flashing. Just be aware you won't be able to do the OTA updates moving forward as you need a full image to do so
Hold up; just to make sure I understood that how you meant it.
I wont be able to do OTA updates unless i keep the entire GAPPS package installed?

Yep, that's correct. OTA updates require a full, untouched system image otherwise the update will fail
wow might as well just go to CM11 and forget CM11S altogether in that case.
+1 to what Eddy said. Doing any modifications to /system/ will cause problems when it comes to updating to the next OTA. So your best chance would be to use CM11 or any other custom ROM with the gapps of your choice.
that actually makes me a tad bit disappointed now.
I was really hoping to keep CM11S for some of the interesting features it had. Oh well, CM11 it is. Just need to find the one without many issues to use until stable is released. Any suggestions?

You can use CM11 (or any other ROM that uses a CM base) and have the CM11S features such as lock screen, camera (available as a apk standalone, doesnt matter what ROM you use), AudioFX (same.. available as a apk).
I'd probably recommend crDroid if you plan to stick to the CM base. Gets updated weekly or so and is based off CM11 without too many additions.
@bp328i did a great job at making a zip of all the CM11S apps that work with crDroid http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55654697&postcount=132
crDroid: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/rom-crdroid-kitkat-4-4-4-t2880851
Not sure whether or not bp used the stock lock screen but attached is the gradient lock screen. Looks better than the stock lock screen (search for what it looks like).
Alright, sounds good. What about people flashing custom kernels? Is this to fix issues with the phone or is it to add something?

Both.
Additional features are made by kernel-by-basis. I can go detail-by-detail on what features but its better off not to since you'll be confused.
The biggest fix would be touchscreen as it has a new touchscreen firmware that fixes ghost swipes.
What Kernel would you recommend? I was reading that some fix a battery drain issue as well?
Other than the personal GAPPS issue i have, does CM11S have any other faults currently?

I don't use CM11S so I can't tell you for sure.
Popular kernels are ak or franco kernel. I personally use Franco Kernel.
Think Im gonna go for CM11 nightlies after looking at Madhi, crDroid and a few others. I just like CM11 for my HTC One S.
For Franco's kernel would I be using the CM11S or AOSP if flashing CM11 nightly? Since CM11s is just a custom version of CM11 i wasnt sure.
nvm found it finally from G+ thread, AOSP

I use BlissPop for my GTN8013 and I love it. But, for some reason on high demanding games (like FarmVille), it causes the game to be laggy even when overclocked, when other ROMs don't have this issue. I've considered going back to AndroidRevolution ROM (which is on KitKat), but it requires so many different things to even get it to boot.
But yes, I would recommend BlissPop. It's no longer getting updates, but it's the only stable one I've seen for the N8013.
IMO there is no better custom ROM out there than CM13 for this device....add a new battery and CM13 and you have a tablet that runs more efficiently than most current devices!
