New Phone Setup - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I found out the other day that I am getting a Nexus 5 as a birthday gift next week and was just wondering what tips/recommendations the community has in terms of what to when I initially get it. I am familiar with android so I know what I need/want to do in terms of basic things like software updates and homescreen configuration but am curious if there are any tips out there that may be a bit more advanced that will help get the most out of the device. Please save yourself the time and don't mention anything regarding rooting or custom ROMs. I have decided not to root for the time being. Thanks

Locked or unlocked verizon gs3

So I have pretty basic knowledge of the android system and how to tweak with it. I have done some basic rooting and flashing in the past. I am about to but an off contract s3 so I was wondering whether I should go ahead and buy the locked verizon phone or wait it out for the unlocked developer phone that Samsung is about to put out.

OK good luck. You could just read a bit, since I have spent hours making a guide or two, many others such as Ronnie and redpoint have spent hours putting guides and grouping all the info here and Devs have spent countless hours creating roms and discovering root methods. You can take some time to read the information and attempt to understand. If something is unclear or you don't quite understand then you can ask questions and I'm sure many people will be glad to help!

it's not that no one here is willing to help you out, you just need to know what you're doing before you do anything because of the huge risks you take in the unlocking process. if you're not willing to put in the time to read about everything before you ask questions and ask for hand-holding, then you should reconsider unlocking.
Here's some material to start with
Sticky #3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232141 (pay attention to rule 1)
Sticky #4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754018
The unlocking thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283760 - read this 5 times over before you actually do anything. and follow each instruction VERY carefully.
Once you're done unlocking: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2286587
Lastly, people are here to help each other, not babysit you through unlocking. If you ask nicely, someone may decide to help you through it. We've all put in hours into reading and researching and searching for answers. Work like this on a phone requires a base level of knowledge so you should strive to learn enough so that you're able to do what you need to in order to unlock your phone. Also, a post like this belongs in the Q&A subforum.
Good luck!

[How to] Unbrick MF3 Custom Recovery Fail

I figured that I might post this to help some people as I see this posted a lot.
Are you one of the ones that tried to install a custom recovery on the MF3 update? Are you facing a never ending boot sequence or device just freezing at boot screen?
Try this to help you get a normal boot so your phone is at least usable. (Note that your factory recovery will no longer work!)
First off, do a battery pull.
After you put the battery back in (make sure it's not plugged up) go into download mode.
Click Cancel instead of continuing into download mode. Chances are your device will boot up normal. I've tried this with a device I own and also tried it on a few others (through PM and chat online).
If this works for you please let me know!
Lol I figured this out in 2 mins of owning the phone.

Yeah it'd be good to have this info in a better titled thread than it was...and an even better titled thread than this one.
Maybe: [How To] Unbrick MF3 after (stupidly ignorantly) attempting to install a custom recovery
Anyways, it was first discovered here, as far as I can tell:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2398336
(post 11)
And there's an alternative method too, if that didn't work:

Guys I'd appreciate it if you didn't spam up this topic with nonsense.
The phone is not bricked for one.
It was never publicly announced what to do one these forums that I could find.
Edit: I just read your posted topics and neither one says to do this
The questions are asked every day by people.
This post has potential to stop some messages.

If you're stuck in download mode and cannot get to your OS, I think that counts as a brick! Yes, btw, post 11 in the first thread I linked shows the solution which I have been telling others to do...which you did us the favor of making a post about as well. I agree that it's good to make this post, though I think your thread title could be more useful if you edited it.
Also, should this method not work for some people, an alternative method is a good thing to have.
Thanks again and have a nice day! :good:

I think my suggestion in post #8 is still a good one.
Your current thread title makes it sound like you tried to flash a custom recovery on MF3 and it didn't work. There's no way anyone would read that title and think there's a "How To" guide in it.
Alright maybe that will work.

Lol I found this thread after I figured it out for myself. I was kind of hoping this would lead me into a way to get back my recovery.
This is how I fixed my brick.
Flashed this file in ODIN. Now my phone boots normally. Got it from another thread with a diff issue here on XDA. I tried it and it worked. Wish I could remember where and what the thread was called. I believe it was this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2360859

Anyone has flashable 4.4.1 radio for Nexus 5? [Got it and GPS issue FIXED!!]

Hi,
I want to try the GPS fix solution by flashing the Android 4.4.1 radio on my Nexus 5.
GPS issue: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=72311
But after searching the internet, I could not find it.
It is not even listed in the official Nexus 5 download image.
Anyone has it?
Please if you can share.
Thank you.

I only found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...t/modem-nexus-5-flashable-modems-efs-t2514095
On your RESOURCES link.
But, I don't know how to flash it. When I extracted the linked "modem" (is this the radio?), I got 2 files.
I am expecting to have a single .img radio image.
If you are interested in the GPS issue that I mentioned here is the link:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=72311
Basically, the GPS was working fine, perfect prior to 4.4.3 / 4.4.4 update.
A lot of people (if not all) fixed the issue by flashing the radio from 4.4.1.

Lot of reasons, but :
You can't see what they're doing
Causes lot sof support threads from people thinking they bricked
You don't learn the essential methods and tools needed to get you out of trouble
Promotes a lack of knowledge and takes a toll on this forum

You don't need the SDK to use fastboot. Fastboot is very easy to use. You can simply install fastboot using the 15 second installer. Please have a read of my "adb and fastboot. What is it?" thread.
I know you only went in my thread to find the radios, but do have a look at the other info a guide threads there. Your world will open up.
Wow ... indeed ... that's easy installation.
I have done the trouble in the past with installing the whole SDK, then maintaining it.
It was too much hassle.

No problem. Any time.
We definitely like to help people who are willing to learn, so respect to you for that!
It's much easier to help someone in trouble who is configured ahead of time and understand than it is to help someone in trouble who doesn't understand basic commands - this is why we (almost everyone) recommend fastboot (and adb in some cases) over toolkits.
Any adb or fastboot questions, please feel free to ask them in that thread.

General tips for noobs/newbies

These are tips for all those who don't know it and who are new to the android world.
Before downgrading or flashing anything, do these things -
1) ENABLE USB DEBUGGING OPTION
2) ENABLE OEM UNLOCK OPTION
3) SEARCH THE FORUM THOROUGHLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY FLASHING
4) READ THE ORIGINAL POST BEFORE POSTING YOUR QUESTIONS DIRECTLY IN THE THREAD

Totally agree, never start to do things without reading thoroughly first. Especially if it is your first Android phone. It's a bit easier if you already had Android phone before as many things are similar when comes the time to install custom recovery and flash new roms. I once hard-bricked a ****ty Samsung Galaxy Ace. It wasn't a big loss since it was just an old slow ugly Gingerbread phone but I was extra careful when I started modding the Moto X Play since it's a good middle range phone.
