Locked or unlocked verizon gs3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I have pretty basic knowledge of the android system and how to tweak with it. I have done some basic rooting and flashing in the past. I am about to but an off contract s3 so I was wondering whether I should go ahead and buy the locked verizon phone or wait it out for the unlocked developer phone that Samsung is about to put out.

You don't need ten posts to post in the general section for the US version.
At&t, tmo, sprint and vzw are all in the same forum, you should go there.

N00b question
So can you do updates via Kies air? Or only via the tethered version? Sorry, i DID search but with no luck. US AT&T user btw.
you may want to clarify in the OP... the models you listed are the phones that will be graced with ICS, but the article also says that "select phones" will get it today... not all of them today.

yeah its same issue here. i don't know why or what has happened with this update stuff. question is then how do we update then??
The reason it says cannot be updated via kies is because you likely had a custom rom on at some point. You have to flash your stock rom back on then format/master reset via recovery and then do the same from settings, privacy and master reset. it should recognize it then
i cant tell you home many pages i read before my first post. one thing learn to search get good with it and that will never happen

where did i mess up to get this verizon unauthorized message?

i had a stock rom...rooted it, then went to install one of the roms from the website here and the custom kernel...now i keep getting this lame message...detected unauthorized software please take your phone to a verizon store. what am i doing wrong here??
Are you trying to use odin or have you flashed a custom recovery, cm or twrp?
sent from my s-off rezound
I'm guessing you didn't use the right recovery to flash a kernel. What recovery did you use.
Sent from my Synergized vzw SGS3
This really should be in the general discussions not in development. At the leased it should be in a post in the development for the ROM you were trying.
Probably just didn't use Kexec
You didn't read the OP of whatever it was you were doing.
Time to download stock images to odin

Way too many d-bags on XDA. Yes, he posted in the wrong forum, now he knows and I'm sure a mod will move it. Saying it over and over again and being a d-bag while doing it, doesn't help anyone.
OP, as others have stated, you are probably best off going back to a stock rom from Odin and ensuring you have a proper recovery flashed. Then start over with whatever it was you were trying to do.

really, what a DB (probably doesn't know the answer anyway).
I hate it when posters can't just help someone out.
wow!!!
lol wow guys, i didnt check this for a few days and honestly i will probably never post here again. i downloaded ez-recovery as i was told to do in many posts. i installed a kexec recovery...cwm 6.0.1.0. i followed the instructions in the synergy rom page and installed it through cwm. i then downloaded the Imoseyons Lean Kernel and installed it in cwm, rebooted and received the error message.
i have flashed several roms and recoveries over the years with the droid inc, droid inc2. and now the samsung. sorry to start a flame war. i will not post here again. i was simply trying to help report issues to developers.
good day.

OK good luck. You could just read a bit, since I have spent hours making a guide or two, many others such as Ronnie and redpoint have spent hours putting guides and grouping all the info here and Devs have spent countless hours creating roms and discovering root methods. You can take some time to read the information and attempt to understand. If something is unclear or you don't quite understand then you can ask questions and I'm sure many people will be glad to help!

it's not that no one here is willing to help you out, you just need to know what you're doing before you do anything because of the huge risks you take in the unlocking process. if you're not willing to put in the time to read about everything before you ask questions and ask for hand-holding, then you should reconsider unlocking.
Here's some material to start with
Sticky #3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232141 (pay attention to rule 1)
Sticky #4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754018
The unlocking thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283760 - read this 5 times over before you actually do anything. and follow each instruction VERY carefully.
Once you're done unlocking: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2286587
Lastly, people are here to help each other, not babysit you through unlocking. If you ask nicely, someone may decide to help you through it. We've all put in hours into reading and researching and searching for answers. Work like this on a phone requires a base level of knowledge so you should strive to learn enough so that you're able to do what you need to in order to unlock your phone. Also, a post like this belongs in the Q&A subforum.
Good luck!

I told him to do so, so he could go to completely another forum (not XDA) and ask this noob question there, where nobody knows him.
Now you get it?
It would be very funny experience for him to find out what other people on other frums know about SGS4 or phone flashing at all.
I would probably get people telling me off and not wanting to teach me... Happens a lot on these forums, luckily the constant S4 questions have kind of died down here and people like myst tend to point them in the right direction instead of just making a fuss about it.
Why not just report it and move on?
Anyhow, congrats on new device, go forth & make it great like you did for sgs4g..

New Phone Setup

I found out the other day that I am getting a Nexus 5 as a birthday gift next week and was just wondering what tips/recommendations the community has in terms of what to when I initially get it. I am familiar with android so I know what I need/want to do in terms of basic things like software updates and homescreen configuration but am curious if there are any tips out there that may be a bit more advanced that will help get the most out of the device. Please save yourself the time and don't mention anything regarding rooting or custom ROMs. I have decided not to root for the time being. Thanks
