Android phone only detects certain sim cards? - General Questions and Answers

Can anyone explain to me why my cell phones only detect and show that a sim is inserted for certain sim cards? For example, my S3 is able to detect a Koodo micro sim, but when I put in a Fido micro sim, it will not detect it and say no sim card inserted. Same goes for my spare dual sim phone. Any reasons why?

This could happen because your phone might be locked to a particular carrier. Search your device forum for help on unlocking.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S I9000 SIM card slot damaged?

Hi,
My Samsung Galaxy S I9000M (Canadian version, but pretty much same as I9000) all of a certain won't recognize the SIM card.
I've read pretty much every post here and on google wrt SIM card not being recognized, tried factory reset, flashed many different ROMs/modems and no luck.
I'm suspicious that the SIM card slot is damaged, as other SIM cards were also not recognized by the phone. Its possible, since I use a micro SIM card adaptor to fit in a micro SIM card into the regular sized slot.
Before I take it to a store, I'd like to ask one of you kind souls to compare the pic of my SIM card slot to your phone and see if there is a gold pin in the middle thats missing on my phone. I see 5 gold pins with no gold pin in the middle at the top of the slot -- should there be one there? (i.e. should there be six pins?)
Thank you so much in advance. I've spend over a week on this so far.
Just to update in case anyone else had the same question:
Yes, there was a pin missing, and the whole SIM card tray had to be replaced.

[Q] no signal. but can use data

I got my htc mini a few days ago. worked fine, and then it started to have no signal but data worked. so i got i new sim card from my carrier and all worked for a day.then the same thing happend. and the first sim card was micro sim card and the second was a nano simcard with adapter to micro sim.
I have trayd to put my phone back to factory settings, searched manually for network, trayd to remove and install the sim countless times with no luck. the sim card is trayd in another phone and it dosen't work there neither. and the phone is not rooted or anything like that
So i was wondring if it can be the phone that destroys the sim cards or maby i am unlucky with sim card?

It's probably about the sim card slot. My mom has a similar device (dual sim) and sometimes the phone will not recognize the sim card when rebooted. Try to re-insert the sim card. See if it works.

Yeah my sim slot will do this from time to time. Usually if I drop it or bang it against the table or something. Sometimes things just get jiggled around in there and a re-insert usually does the trick.

I guess your sim card is not properly cut. If it's a micro/nano sim card, that's most likely the reason. I suggest buying a sim card that has been cut by the service provider. Have a nice day.

I've only ever owned sim cards that were cut by the service provider.

Sim Cards

what is the difference in a 2G sim card and a 4G sim card? I have an iRULU v3. 6.5 smart phone with 2 sim card slots.
One slot says 4G the other 2G. I currently have only a 2G sim card, Family-Mobile through t-mobile they want $25.00 for a new sim card, is it worth getting the card. half the time the phone says emergency only with the 2G sim, it worked in my old Samsung even if not great service.
I was led to believe that the sim card had nothing to do with cell service but my cell service still suks with this current sim.

SimCard doubt

I have a doubt, my phone is double Sim Card, but the company delivered it blocked with a sim slot, the sim tray has plugged the slot for the other sim. I got the tray with the two slots open and I do not read the two sim only one, is that if I download the original samsung firmware will enable the other sim?
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime (SM-G570M)
Are you certain you actually have the dual-SIM model of the phone? It seems more likely that they have shipped you the normal one-SIM model by accident, rather than that they have taken a dual SIM phone and stuffed a one SIM tray in it and changed the firmware to disable the second SIM.
If you in fact have a one SIM phone, return it and ask them to send the correct model. The single SIM model of the phone doesn't have the connector or circuitry there to read a second SIM.
