I called them and argued that my "NEW" phone was old and I shouldnt have to pay a restocking fee so i got my $35 dollars refunded to my credit card bill.
Also ( I asked for 100 dollars off at the point of my SGII purchase)
so I ended up getting the phone for 250-100-35= 115

I purchased the SGII October 20th online for $199 because they didn't have it in my att store and then on Nov 7th I went into the att store and exchanged it for the skyrocket, not only did I not have to pay the $35 restocking fee but they are offering the skyrocket for $149, so I got a $50 refund
The $150 price is only in certain markets. It's still $250 here

This is exactly what I experienced 2 days ago. I traded in my SGII at a local AT&T store, which I bought online a week earlier, and they credited me $50. So strange. Who am I to argue?
Always argue. They give more

So I should call? What should I say? I had to pay the Restocking fee :/

I had a preorder on the device when I received it I noticed the etf states up to 175.00

I've got that beat as both of mine came with paperwork that says the ETF is $0.

I guess I tied you cause my ETF is 0 dollars as well. Lmfao, I wanna see could I cancel and escape these fees.
Mine also says $0. Wait wait wait...so does this mean we can cancel whenever for free and keep the phone?
Both of mine say "Early Termination Fee: $0" too.
Mine's 0 as well. There was a thread about this over at AndroidCentral. I'd bet the 0$ ETF folks renewed their unlimited.
I will have to check mine now.

Did you steal the upgrade from a dumb phone? If so, their system gets confused. If you got a smartphone, your ETF is double that. I saw it when I got the letter and called to confirm.

Not sure about the unlimited aspect as only one of mine had GF unlimited on it. The other line had a regular 2GB plan.
No have had a smart phone since I was 13. I'm 25 now lol. I kept my unlimited data hence the preorder. I'm pretty salty that some of you have a 0 dollar etf. Verizon will honor this it's a contractual agreement so don't be bullied when they try to push the 350 etf. Anyways your etf goes down like 13 dollars or something every month. So 6 months down the road I will toss this phone out and get something new.

I received updated confirmations via snail mail today and both lines now state an ETF of $350. I wonder how that all plays out since I also have confirmations that state it's $0. Since I'm not planning on leaving VZW at the moment it's sort of moot.
Starting tomorrow tmobile USA will have free down payment for HTC one s after rebate in the month September's in value plans. 50 down and you get 50 back.
Actually you receive your down payment back of $50 only applicable for value plans, paying full price for the device over 20 months.

Bought my One S yesterday for $0 after the $50 rebate. Classic plan is still less expensive than AT&T considering T-Mobile's new unlimited data plan. On top of that get the corporate 15% discount on the $400 I will pay over the value plan and I have an insurable One S through T-Mobile and Wells Fargo credit card for $360. Not a bad deal and beats buying one on craigslist.
So, be carefull.... what you think is full price may not be exactly true. $450 comes to mind.
Sorry guys the email I obtained was incorrect I edit to avoid confusion

I'm curious of what you guys/gals think about this:
Currently I'm an AT&T subscriber and I'm planning to switch to T-Mobile.
If I buy the phone from AT&T, it'll equate to: $199 + $14.88 (tax) + $36 (activation fee) = $249
The ETF for AT&T is $325.
$249 +$325 = $574.
Is this something I should pursuit? I know AT&T will unlock the phone if you pay the ETF. Are there any hidden fees or anything else that should stop be from this?
Tax will not be of the 200, that is the subsidized price but taxes have nothing to do with subsidization.
Taxes are applied to the full price of the phone.
Also I don't think Lte will work. I would not pursue it.

I think taxes on the full price only apply in California and Rhode Island.
2 other people confirmed their states did too although I don't remember their states.
I would still not recommend it. To save a few bucks you might sacrifice network compatability.

Live in Cali and a few miles away from NV. NV = tax on $199, not crazy California subsidized prices lol.

Awesome work around. My mother lives in Georgia. How do you think it would work renewing my contract online? It probably depends on my credit card zip code right?

If you renew your contract online, they either do by billing address and/or shipping address. I'm pretty sure they go by your billing address that is listed on your carrier contract.
I bypassed the CA taxes with my iPhone 4 by just going to Reno NV and buying the iPhone 4 from the Apple store. Taxed on $199.

You can eliminate all the work by just ordering from Walmart online like I did! $189 will be charged to my card upon shipping! I also did this with the gs3. I also live in the blood sucking state of California!

I live in NV and have always been taxed on the FULL price of the phone, however I've always made my upgrades through AT&T online never in store. Going in store to upgrade to the S4 today so we'll see what the tax is.

really? So you just have to pay a renewal fee and no taxes at all? Can you please double check your statement for me when you get the chance? I'm going to give that a try in June.

You will have to pay the first month of service as well which will be around $90+ taxes. If you return it too soon (14 days I believe) they will just take back the phone with a 10% restocking fee and not charge the ETF so you must keep it AT LEAST 2 weeks.

I'm positive.... As a matter of fact Walmart has lowered there price to $168 now! No tax no shipping just $168 otd. You will be charged the renewal fee on your bill but if you are a premier member like me(I am an at&t employee) you can call in after its billed and have it refunded.
Total cost of a brand new gs4
$168

Honestly I don't know the answer to that. When I said I worked for at&t what i meant was i am a cable maintenance splicer for outside network on at&t core side! So basically I work on all outside network plant including pots, uverse, cell towers.....and everything else basically. So mobility questions like that i would have to ask!

Also add 1/2 month of service & I believe you have to pay tax on the ETF fee.
I don't think they will allow you to terminate your contract without returning the phone unless its after the 14 day return period.

You are correct. I also think their current terms state they no longer prorate, they charge you for the whole first month (plus all the BS fees and taxes). In the end, you can't beat the system.

How about people quit trying to scam the system and just either get an upgrade, OR buy the phone outright?
Honestly threads that discuss ways to scam the telcos should be closed by the mods.

The activation fee is waived if you make a two-year commitment. Buying it off contract requires an activation fee. Some FAN accounts waive the activation fee (mine does). Do you qualify for a discount through work? If so you should have the discount applied to your account and see if they'll waive the fee.
Or if you have Direct TV. Only cost me the price of the watch (I bought it out right) plus 10 bucks a month. I have DTV and unlimited plan.
Thanks both. I bought on the 2 year contract, since we've been with ATT for years anyway. I'll give them a call.
