[Q] How to stop huge battery drain from voice calls? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been getting crazy drains from voice calls recently.
It has been taking up more battery than my screen on certain occasions.
Anything I can do to stop this drain?
Phone: Nexus 5
ROM : Elixr-1.1

how much do you talk on the phone? what is your signal like?

Signal is almost always at full bars, so that can't be the issue.
And around 3-4 hours minimum of voice calls a day.
Battery usage almost always show both the screen and voice calls draining the same amount of charge and sometimes the latter uses more. That shouldn't be the case, right? @simms22

3-4 hours of voice calls daily? theres not really snything you can do about the battery loss during phonecalls, the screen and phonecalls are the largest battery users.

Try turning the screen off during calls so you don't trip the proximity sensor.
Also if you know there's a long call coming up you can disable all other radios such as BT, WiFi, even data. Close out any apps especially games. In this way you should theoretically be able to push 10-14 hours of voice calls.

First of all 3-4 hours voice call each day is very normal.Mine is around 6 hours.
Sometimes if you're finding your battery is running out very quickly, it could be an app that's doing a lot in the background and thus using extra battery. Maybe something changed with the 4.4 update that caused this app to consume a larger percentage of your battery. If you think that might be the case, in addition to the standard battery-saving tips posted here you might also try starting your device in safe mode (instructions and info here) and not running any apps you've installed for the day to test if one of them is using a lot of extra power. If you don't experience unusual battery drain while in safe mode that's a good indication that an app you've installed is the source of your issue.
Hope that helps!
:good:

@simms22, that's a bummer. I always thought that phone calls should drain a lot less power than the screen. @joannn, all other apps have been greenified, it's just the dialer app that's open. I still get very respectable battery life. Around 5 hours of SoT on my Nexus 5 after 4 hours of talktime, but the voice calls are a huge part of the drain. That's what I wanted to address. Cause the battery can last a whole lot longer then!

Wait - you get 5 hours of SOT in addition to 4 hours of talktime on a single charge? (And you feel that is insufficient?)

@jj14, why be content with that if you know you can do better?

voice calls take a large amount of battery because they maintain a constant connection while sending data(voice/sound) back and forth. id say it probably uses more energy then the screen itself.

While it may not be practical, I do love that response, and that attitude! (No sarcasm intended) That's the attitude the (battery) manufacturers need as well.

Well yeah, my data is almost always off along with Bluetooth and turning off WiFi alone won't help me get more than a few minutes of extra charge.
I was curious as to why the voice calls were draining so much charge and how to stop that.

Getting pretty good SOT, but the dialer draining battery showing 'proximity sensor' as wakelock. But I usually don't make too many calls.

I am getting Proximity Sensor partial wakelocks. Not sure what causing it, but it appears to be the 1st in list of Partial Wakelocks. I will try using bluetooth for a whole day to see if there is an issue with the proximity sensor itself.
Or you suggest something else as well to check?

hmm, this thing really sounds stupid to me now... (no pun intended. :silly
i mean though it's a smartPHONE, it's still a PHONE, voice calls are the reason why there's a PHONE in that name, that's the soul of having a PHONE, and now we say that voice calls use more battery than a 1080p screen.. This make me realize that my Nokia 1100 had a beast battery, about 800mah and still used to last me during all those lengthy calls...

If you're fine with not doing anything else with the phone, then why not? Smartphones are used to do much more than just phone calls, all that power doesn't just go away when you decide to make a phone call.
Any of the things I mentioned earlier in this thread could help to achieve the 14+ hours of Voice Calls. Of course most people need more than just Voice Calls and will be unhappy disabling everything else in the mean time.

Horrible battery life Verizon model

After 7 hours, I'm at 14%. Screen was on for 2 hours and I haven't been doing anything intensive (3d games or movies etc) just some web browsing. On automatic brightness. Are other people getting battery life this bad?
what about gps, nfc, app update intervals, there can be a lot going on in the background.

Screen is, with 48%
Wifi is on, Bluetooth, NFC, and gps are off.
to be fair, my gf's verizon GS3 is ridiculously efficient. granted she was on wifi most of the day and doesn't use internet as much, but she was at 53% with 13 hours and 2 hours 14 min of screen time.
my att on the other hand, wifi off and on LTE, was at 53% with 6 hours and 2 hours of screen time.

How is the LTE signal in your area, if its not strong and swapping back and forth from 3g to LTE all day it can take a huge toll on your battery.

Mine seems to be doing great. The signal isn't that great in my house either. This is more real time use as I was asleep for a while. But when I woke up at 10am this morning it was at 92. I've been using it moderately ever since. I get about 8 hours with ridiculous use(4+hr screen on time).
Never on wifi.
Edit: I realize its kind of a bad example since it was in standby more than awake. But I'm getting great battery.

I had the same problem as you did. What made a significant change for me was changing amount of apps to keep running at 4 instead of default. Also I found the xda app runs in the background, continues to drain the battery. I have to manually kill the xda app every time I exit it. For today I'm at 12 hour running, and screen on 1.5hrs and 59 percent battery life.

I've been getting worse battery on wifi than 4g for some reason. I also noticed my idle power usage is around 115mA, where on my thunderbolt it was around 20mA

Ditto on the xda app, it was burning up cpu cycles while in the background, enough to make my phone warm. So I just close it every time I'm done using it.

I have the Verizon model of the S3 as well. I have had it for over a week now because I was an early pre-order so I got it really early. For the first few days I was getting really bad battery life. I would maybe only get 8 - 9 hours with moderate usage, that being about 2 hours of screen time. I would play no games, and just browse the web and text. I am a big texter though, but on my DINC as long as I had mobile data switched off I could get plenty of life out of my phone. With this phone for some reason after about 70 percent, mine will start to drain much faster regardless of what I am using it for, even if the screen is is off. Just to test it I left all the radios on while the phone was at 100 percent over night, and the next morning it was at 96. The next day I tried the same test when my phone was at 50 percent battery, and when I woke up it was at 10 . I don't really understand what is going on here either. I keep seeing all of the reviews for the device even the Verizon version to point towards great battery life, but I am just not seeing it. Maybe rooting and a re-flashing the stock rom plus removing bloatware will help. I also got another battery just to see if that was the problem, but it doesn't seem to be. I'm hoping this is just a software issue, because I don't know why some can get such great battery and some can't. I would also hate to have to get a replacement phone.
im getting around 10 hours with Heavy use ... 6 hours of pandora, youtube, email, facebook, twitter, web
On day 6 with the phone

It's the best battery saver I have tried.

Hi all,
Just want to share a battery saver app which works really well on my charge. I used to have 10-12 hrs normal usage, now I have 20hrs with left over at the end of the day. The only feature that you have to look out for is "enable cpu saving", it may work for you, but for me this put my phone in so deep sleep that it never wake up. But of course just pull battery, reboot then disabled the feature. it made by a big Chinese internet security company and "melvinchng" is nice enough to translate it to English for us. All credits go to him. Hope you all like it. Cheers!

I may be missing something, but it looks like all it is doing is blocking mobile data periodically, right? mobile data is the biggest drainer on battery performance (in my experience). however, I don't want to have it off, even for a minute - as if I misplace my phone, I'll need mobile data to be on in order to find my phone via the Lookout app...

It doesn't unless you instruct it to do so. If you toggle wifi/4g on only when needed then you should save even more. Did you see Vulkano? that video streaming over 4g. If I have wifi/4g on all the time, with my normal usage, I can have the phone unplugged at 8am to 10pm and still have about 30% left. Of course my normal usage maybe different from yours. If I have your phone in standby (screen off), I got 10hrs and the phone is at 91%.(about 1% per hrs). I suggest to find out if this app really help or not, just try it out, you have nothing to loose.

thanks, I will.
I know that in standby mode with wifi on and 4G off, my battery drains about 1% per hour. with 4G on (no wifi connection), ~5% per hour.
once factoring in some moderate usage, that drops down quite significantly.

Actually, you didn't include your screen on time at all. Your screen's percentage of battery use was over 50%, though. Including your actual screen on time would help when comparing battery usage.
well, this app was a major fail for me. after 4 hours, down to 61%. it blocks what I need (google syncs such as mail, calendar, photos, drive, music, etc). so if someone sends me an appointment, I will not receive it.
I don't have any problem with Juice defender. But I guess it isn't for everyone. I just use it so I don't have to worry about manually switching back and forth between 4g and wifi as I go around throughout the day.
I turned off 4g recently to try to improve my horrible battery life (just got 4g in my area too ). It wasn't a huge difference but what really changed it for me was to stop overclocking. I really don't see much lag anyways and it didn't help with the apps I wanted so fixes fine for me.

regarding Wifi, I have found that editing the build.prop file to adjust the wifi interval scan helps dramatically. I changed my 1800 (once every 30 minutes). now I leave wifi and 4G on all the time with no significant battery drainage.
but I have found that these so-called battery saving apps just simply cut off mobile data or "auto-sync".
This app was a huge fail for me. Back to the antutu battery saver i go.

antutu was a fail for me too. so was "easy battery saver"
trying out juice defender again. I think I'm okay with mobile data turning on/off periodically. JD seems to do this nicely. I also like how JD turns on mobile data when the screen is unlocked.
however, I'm thinking that this could be done via a build.prop edit of some kind. essentially, what I would like to do is:
if WiFi is disconnected and screen is off/locked, turn on mobile data for 1 minute every 30 minutes, if WiFi is connected, turn off mobile data and keep wifi connection.

Are there any others s4 owners out there noticing BAD battery life?

I've seen a couple threads praising their s4s for how long the battery life and in one case how much it flatlines while it's idle.
Since I've had mine , I've noticed the opposite. Using it very casually throughout the day with some light texting it'll drain probably about 30-40% while doing very little of anything.
But the part that stands out the most is when my s4 is idle overnight , it'll drop about 17-20% while others have reported seeing very little loss.
Has anyone else expierenced poor battery life? Is this normal for my s4 to do?
The only features I have turned on are; Wifi, Sound, Mobile Data, and Sync.

If it were a mystery app running in the background, would it be listed on the battery stats screen showing the % each program is taking up?

One of the problems I had when updating to my new S4 was the memory card. Going from the S3 to the S4 was not good. The S4 didnt like the memory card and was causing high Gallery cpu/battery usage. Reformating the card fixed that problem.
Now, my Galaxy S4 has the best life of any Android I have ever had. At the end of the day, it still has 40% battery remaining with an screen on time of around 4 hours.

I think you're aiming in the right direction here. That was one of my guesses was that sync is draining it fast.
Just checked what i had under accounts. The only ones that were syncing were Google (toggled off a few of the features i don't use so i only sync what i do use, drive , calender etc)
The only other one that was on was Samsung account which i just toggled off as well since I don't have any need for that to be synced up whatsoever.
The only other apps I can think of that actively try to sync are my gmail and facebook. I'm not sure how to view the frequency for gmail to sync, but facebook is set up to check every hour.

Look on XDA, its free.
Also after the OTA update my battery life is about 2x worse. Before I would lose 1% overnight and now i lose about 3%. Before I could get 4hrs screen on time with 20hrs standby, and now I am at 35% with 10 hours standby and 2hrs 6min on screen on.
Going to factory reset tonight.
I have only slightly better battery life than my rooted inspire 4g with a 1230 mah battery....
I cant WAIT for the custom roms and developers tweaking these phones...there is soo much potential for this device!

Is this battery life normal?

Hey all,
I was just wondering, is this battery life normal? Ot seems to me as if it was just too low, well, actually, sh*t.
Thanks in advanced.
EDIT: got to 7% just writing this post, with Spotify.
EDIT2: I forgot to say I disabled wifi scan even when off, Ok Google hot word, bluetooth is always off, same applies to wifi, brightness nearly at minimum, but location on and sweep2wake aswell.

No, it sucks. Get rid of spotify it's sucking your battery
The battery sucks
I am at 9 hours and 45 minutes, 18 seconds on my current charge. I have 70% remaining. 19% of my used battery life has been voice calls so far today also. I get more than a day easily but I charge every night just to be sure my alarm goes off in the morning, but on weekends I get two full days at time pretty easy.
I use waze at times to navigate and play music at the same time in the car for about 3 hours at a time, that can use my full battery in eight hours total, but for using everything basically I fine with that! Doing nothing special to save power either.

Rather than *****ing about the battery on a daily basis how about you get the g2/note3/iphone/startac and mozy on out of here.

still trolling i see. also it seems that you didnt learn how to set up your phone properly yet. when you do learn, you will see that the non removeable battery for your 5 inch 1080p phone is not so underpowered, but not managed properly by the user.

my rom and kernel are rastakat with trinity kernel. but battery life is mostly determined by how you personally set up your phone, how you personally use the phone, how you manage your phone and apps(plus keeping away from known terribly written apps, like facebook), and, very importantly, the quality of your data/phone connection(this makes a big difference in battery life).

hmm... then what should I do? Not getting 3 hours of battery seems terrible... Warranty will not cover this, right?

no. but id say that depending how you use your device(we all use it differently), that 2.5-4.5h screen on time would be considered normal. with some effort in managing your device/apps, 4.5-7h sot is possible, with 7h sot being the extreme end(most wont ever see 7h, but a few will). i normally see between 5-6.5h sot.

The battery Thread--Post your battery stats here

still patiently a.k.a. biting my finger nails and going crazy for my pure x. i though of starting this thread to post our battery status. at this point i am really worried because this is basically the same hardware as the G4 and that one is not know for its longevity.
gotta keep an eye on this one.
hope someone can test it with greenify soon.

I got the device yesterday morning, charged it to 100%, sync up all my email and apps and used it as I normally use any of my phones. I only got 4 hours SOT. That was from 100% to 1%.

4 hours SOT on first drain... not bad. Keep us posted on the next few charge cycles.
also the exact timings if you would. i.e. when did u plug it off the charger and when did it reach the 1%?
and if it is not much of a burden and since you own the nexus 6, how is the new charger? Motorola said this the fastest quick charger ever

Lte or WiFi? Hope its lte.
i meant you mentioned u started in the morning? what hour? and when it reached 1%, what was the hour then?
Does the phone get hot when using the turbo charger?
4 hours sot on WiFi is prey terrible. There has to be something eating battery. Maybe some of their junk left running like the voice assistant or the front sensors. Maybe their stock kernel is woefully inefficient. That is pretty bad sot on WiFi. I hope you had a wake lock or something from an app or brightness at max
4 hours from the very first discharge is not in the least "terrible" one bit honestly, especially considering that it's a QHD. I can't manage to pull 4 hours sometimes from my HTC One M8 that doesn't have QHD, that's on a custom ROM and kernel, AND that has a significantly smaller screen than the Moto X Pure. And the battery is only 400 mAh less than what the Moto has.

i WISH I got more than 4 hours SOT on my OnePlus. Some of it is the average to poor TMob signal I get though. That's what I'll have to compare to with the moto x - which arrives today
I get about 2 hrs of SOT on my Note 3.... thats terrible!

I can get 4 hours sot on my one plus on lte easily. Heavy web browsing usage. Solely on WiFi it might be close to 8 hours but I'd say at least 6 minimum.
4 hours sot for WiFi, if accurate, is a huge issue and would probably cause me to cancel. I'll wait for more accurate readings and confirmation obviously but if true that is terrible. That would put LTE SOT at around 2.5 hours.
Could also be carrier related. Those CDMA radios could be sucking juice.
I average about 4hrs on my nexus 6 unplugged from 8:30am to 11pm at night. Everything is enabled. sync, google now, location, bluetooth, wifi. If I can do about the same or better with the moto x pure I'd be content.

Everyday is mixed usage for me but I'm on WiFi probably 11 to 12 hrs of that time. Drive home and lunch time is when I'm on mobile. Weekends I'm mostly away from work but its not too much different as T-Mobile is strong in Houston. I just came back from Seattle and signal there is bad so I was definitely hurting a bit more.
Words with friends Tapatalk fitbit chrome browsing texting and hangouts chat google plus and photos make up the majority of my app activity. I use a lot of the Google now voice activation features as well for texting.

Aha.. This seems normal for WiFi usage. I was hoping to get battery life like the note 4 or so but it seems the moto x will not be able to do that [emoji17]

That's pretty good. With that S808 don't expect any record breaking sot.
Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk
That's not very good, considering I'm at 58% right now and at 3h 11min SOT on my Mi4. Oh well, if the Moto X can last me the day, that's all that matters.

Well if you're going to compare it to other phones don't expect it to be the best, of course there is better. Like you said as long as it gets you through the day then its cool.
