[Q] File transfer from PC to G Tablet?

I'm trying to transfer files from my PC to my tablet, but the PC doesn't recognize the tablet - it wants me to format it. Same thing when I try to transfer the files from my mp3 player, the content of the player should be listed in the usbdisk folder, correct?
This is driving me NUTS, I'd appreciate some help. Oh, and tablet is rooted - VEGAn.

Rooting this Gtab is somewhat of a different process fyi

You could always use dropbox, Google it

It works fine for me, with no ADB installed (Vegan 5). Plugging the Gtab straight into the PC and turning on USB storage should recognize it as a USB storage device, like any other USB key.
OP, what operating system are you using? Have you tried a different USB cable? A different USB port on the PC? Perhaps a different PC (if one is available)?

Hi,
For the PC, are you connecting from your regular size USB connector on the PC to the *mini-USB* port on the side of the Gtab (not the full-size USB under the cover on the side of the Gtab)?
The mini-USB connector is the one you need to use to connect to your PC.
The full-size USB under the cover is a "host" USB, i.e., you can connect a flash USB drive or USB hard drive to that, and then assuming it's formatted FAT32 with only ONE partition, you should be able to see it on the Gtab under /usbdisk.

- I don't have a different cable/PC to try it with
- FYI - it WAS initially working when I tried to transfer files from my mp3 player to the tablet, the transfer was interrupted when the cord came loose from the tablet, and now it's no-go for both the PC or mp3 player file transfer process
- I do have a permanent folder usbdisk on the tablet, even when there's nothing plugged into the usb ports

The small port (like a camera cord) should work. The cable has a USB end on the PC side. It should be recognized on the PC as an external drive. No need to install ADB unless you want to try that too.
One idea is try plugging the USB cable into different ports on the PC end.

If you have wireless and can share network drives on your PC, try File Expert. Its free and can be found in the market. With it I can connect to my PCs drives and copy to SD or USB in my GTab right on it. Granted, it took quite some time to copy a 1GB movie to SD2 (10 min), but it worked. I had to prevent my device from sleeping though or the transfer failed. Worked well though. I'm on TnT lite.

Hi,
I seem to recall that roebert (I think) had a problem w the miniusb connector being loose or broken. Have you looked at the connector in detail? Maybe the solder connection broke and it 'jiggles'? If so, probably need to get it repaired.

Well, I know it's not the cable, because I used it to transfer files from PC to mp3 player without any problems.
My PC shows the tablet (drive letter E assigned to it when plugged in), but I can't access the tablet - it's like the PC recognizes something is plugged in, but it doesn't recognize it as having content or something.
On top of that, I kept getting the android.process.acore error, so I did a datawipe and had to re-download all my apps again, to add to the aggrevation.
I will look at the different solutions suggested and if they're not requiring too much advanced knowledge, I will attempt them.
Thanks again for the help & suggestions so far, hopefully I will somehow stumble onto a fix that works!

So, I figured it out. Really simple - if you know how.
The VEGAn root is what did me in - when you plug in the cable, it doesn't give you the option to turn on the USB Mass Storage, which you need when you want to transfer files from PC to tablet. The unrooted device was a bit more user friendly by walking you through it when the cable was plugged in.
I figured out that if you tap and drag down on the USB icon on the top of the screen you can actually access the options - it's not just a status icon!
Hopefully this'll help out someone else who's rooting their tablet following instructions blindly without really knowing what's what!

Astro SMB Module
If you are working on a home/private network and the file is on a shared network drive, you can map it in using Astro and the SMB Module for Astro ("Astro SMB" returns both in the market provided you have the market fix) and browse shared network drives just like you would on your laptop or PC.
Once installed, a network icon appears in Astro (looks like an upside down "T" or an old school windows network icon) and you can map in your network drives pretty easily. I use this with NAS and work files pretty regularly. You may have to enter alternate or domain specific credentials to make it work.
EDIT: Also I believe there are file format limitations, OS limitations, but haven't fully explored that.

An alternative to USB Mounting

Hey guys. I had a lot of problems with USB Mounting myself so I tried all sorts of things to fix it. However, there actually is an easier way. A lot of stores sell microSD + adapters for really cheap especially for 2 GB and those have no problems being read by the computer. So if you have a SD slot, there is that solution.

It's very inconvenient to turn off your phone, take off the back cover, take out the battery, take the sd card out, put it in the reader, transfer the files, put the card back, battery back, cover back, power up, then do what you need to.
What problems are you having?

For small files I just use Dropbox to transfer.

ssh/sftp, wireless adb
I just turn on wifi for my phone, then connect with my home computer to the ipaddress via ssh on the command line or secure ftp with some sort of ftp client that supports sftp (filezilla or some desktop environments support it natively, like linux ones).
If your computer has ssh server set up (easy to do in linux or if you're on windows, then i reccomend installing the package from cygwin), then you can connect from your phone to your computer as well to grab files and such (and do so anywhere, not just over wifi).

I use a usb card reader just as backup incase I can't get to a *img.zip to keep my bootloader from executing it.

I have a micro usb cable plugged into my laptop dock. On my phone, I installed the app "Auto Mount USB". Then I just plug in my phone. One quick motion.
Much easier than prying open the battery cover, taking out the battery, taking out the microSD, putting it into my microSD to regular SD adapter, and finally (whew) putting that into my laptop's SD card slot.

I've recently installed an app called WebSharing Lite from the market. It basically starts a webserver on the phone that you can access via browser from any PC on the same wifi network. From there you can move files around etc. Works awesome.

i used to use bluetooth file transfer. now i use dropbox even for files as big as 88mb ive used it. downloading it over 4g takes about a minute and a half.

i would just upload them to a storage site then download it to my desktop

You can just use recovery under mounts and storage then mount as usb storage. Allot easier and faster.

SD card adapter is nice when youre having phone troubles...
I thought about using SSH on my phone, just haven't taken the time to set it up. i SCP files around at work all the time...

It's pretty easy to do if you just want to use a gui frontend (few apps on the market).

since you already know what you're doing, should be up and running in 10-20mins

Wifi file explorer is also a really nice option. It's what I use and I can't complain about it. Simple apply that doesn't require actually mounting the sd card so you can still access anything on the phone and the computer simultaneously.

the kernel devs have found a fix for it. you have to connect to PC using internet passthrough let it intall the drivers and then moust usb storage that worked for me

USB connection hell

I don't know what to do about this sudden problem. I've had my transformer since early May with the dock. I've never had any trouble connecting to any computer via the usb cable until this past weekend. Now all of a sudden it won't even show as connected when the tablet is connected to the dock.
So I tried it directly connected to the tablet and it will connect and come up on the computer but most of the time it kicks out after a little bit or when loading the files in a folder it just gets stuck loading and will not move so I can't move files to it.
I know I can transfer files with things like dropbox, but I move files every day and don't feel like fighting with the transformer for a half hour every day to get files where I want them when under normal circumstances I can move them in seconds via usb.
I tried calling support but all I got was a bunch of BS about needing to install all the software from their site which I actually did and it didn't fix anything.
Both computers I normally use are Windows 7 64 bit machines.
Anyone run into a similar issue? Any ideas?

Try enable USB debugging.
Go to Settings --> Applications --> Development --> Check box for USB Debugging.
There's fews options you can (Do a backup first) try:
1) Reset to factory settings.
2) Format your microSD.
3) Re-flash the ROM.
Besides there's many ways to transfer files from Asus pad to PC.
Wireless Transfer.
FTP Transfer.
Wireless or FTP.

OP, sorry to hear about the issue. In the instances where you are able to connect via USB, if you leave it alone (don't' touch it), then can it complete the transfer? Since the Transformer uses the same connector to charge and transfer, I'm just wondering if the connector is physically getting lose or something.
When I had the transformer, I usually use the micro-SD card to transfer files. But that's just me.

Not to criticize your idea or be a jerk...but what does that mean? I don't think 1) wireless transfer and 2)FTP transfer counts as two different methods of transfer. That's like calling USB and "drag-and-drop" two different ways of transferring stuff to devices. Wireless is wireless, whether you're using a FTP protocol or just downloading using the browser.

Similar Issue
I had a similar issue when (but before) I rooted my TF. My Windows 7 64-bit machines wouldn't notice my device unless debugging was enabled and then I couldn't "safely" disconnect the device unless I disabled debugging.
I'm not quite sure what the issue is there but that is how I connect and disconnect.

Thanks for the reply. USB debugging was already turned on so I tried without it. No luck. I'm on hold with support again. If nothing comes from it I guess I will need to reformat. I never rooted so I doubt it's a rom issue.
As I was typing they said to download and install the latest firmware. I've kept this thing up to date, but I guess it's worth a try.

I got it to work one time. Every other time it just gets stuck loading the content of the folder. If I try to add anything it just sits there as it seems to be waiting for it finish loading. It's just so weird as it has worked perfectly for two months now and then all of the sudden it stopped working. I would maybe understand if there was an update or something but nothing's changed on the tablet or the computers.

I have the same issue with my usb and EVERY device. It all started when I updated the usb drivers with the nvflash certificate. Now when I want to use a usb device or my on board card reader I have to uninstall the general usb driver in the windows device manager, and for new devices. Only then will it recognize whatever I may have conected.

oh the weird usb issues I've seen. Right now my system says that it doesn't have drivers for my vibrant and yet I can connect it and access it perfectly

Try format your microSD yet? Use SD Formatter 3.0.

With wireless (using Wifi File Explorer), you just enter the asus epad (ip address) on the browser to download/upload/etc... files from your asus pad.
With FTP, you will need install ftp client on your windows to access files on your device.

Windows XP and newer versions already have an FTP client - Windows Explorer.
I use the free "Software Data Cable" app. It creates the FTP server on your Transformer, and gives you the address to type into Windows Explorer.
It works great! You can transfer files using your PC, which is a lot easier than doing it on the Transformer.
I haven't used the USB connection since!

Thanks for the replies. I think this thing needs to be rma'd. I just did a factory reset and it's still having issues. I managed to get it connected only through a direct connection and it won't even let me create a folder. It's getting a little late to do it now so I'll call asus tomorrow morning and get it started.

[Q] Viewing the TF as an external drive on a mac

Hi!
I'm the happy owner of a TF since last week. When I bought it, I didn't know about rooting it, and such, so mine is a B80, not rootable. Otherwise I guess I would have changed the OS.
Anyway, now I'm facing another problem : I'd like to have the TF mount as an external hard drive on my mac, to be able to put files on it the simple way, and not via USB key, or uploading on a server. But it doesn't work. I looked into the iCloud stuff, and for mac, the only software that works is Splashtop, and it's not available for OS older than Snow Leopard. I'm running Leopard and have no intention whatsoever to upgrade it, since it would mean probably having to reinstall everything, and some programs might stop working.
I have installed ES file manager, and I can see my mac on the network, but I can't connect to it. It tells me "you don't have permission to access" or something similiar. The files I wanted to share are open, but I still need to enter my login and password (I don't know why, but it's the same on the PC if I want to access the mac files). But ES file manager doesn't let me specify a login (or I haven't found out how to do it).
Is there any way I could easily share files on the three devices (mac, PC and TF) a simple way, without having to configure the mac as an FTP server ? (I wouldn't really know how to do it)
I'm a bit pissed of, because I thought it would mount without problem on both computers (I haven't had a chance to try it on the PC, though). I didn't want an iPad for all sorts of reasons, but at least the iPad would mount on the mac (I guess).
Luckily, I have the keyboard dock, so I can connect an external hard drive, but I want to be able to bring it to me sometimes without the dock and be able to mount it everywhere.
Sorry for this long post...
BTW, I might buy a micro SD card, which would be an easy way to share files, if it can be removed easily from the TF, but I can't figure out if it would be the case, or if it's more the "you plugged it in, now use a knife or tweezers to take it out" scenario. Is it possible to remove it without too much hassle ? Thanks !

Can someone point me in the right direction (both to the beach and the solution)?

You could set up a server on your computer, and access it via your tablet with an app like ES File Manager. Are you trying to send files or receive them from your tab?

I've been trying to get ES FM to work, it starts the BT service then spends hours (if let it) trying to get the file list from the PC - they are paired, but traveling from the tablet to the PC never works, but I can reverse it and transfer from the PC to the Tablet.
I'd really like it both ways. I also have Medevils (sp) Bluetooth File Transfer, but that can't connect to the PC.
SO, it would seem I'm missing the drivers, or config on the PC.

Its impossible to access EVERYTHING on your computer. For obvious security reasons.
What i would recommend, is simply creating a folder on your Windows PC, sharing that file across your network, then using ES navigate to that networked folder. Then, if you need something that isnt in that networked folder, use VNC to access and control your PC and simply copy the file to the networked folder. Then you got what you want

The sharing isn't the problem - it's the lack of being able to connect via BT. I can via WiFi but do not want to due to where I am.

Well think about it. If I could push files from my computer to my tablet, pretty much anyone with Bluetooth can...
Wi-Fi is your only option..

I DO push files TO my tablet from my PC. But the reason no one else can is that they're paired and the tablet will/can only accept files from the PC, anything else and I'm notified and have to allow. I wait too long and the sender errors out.
I can do it with WiFi in both directions, and with BT from PC to tablet. I just can't FROM Droid to PC.
THAT is the basis of my original post.

No i understand what you are saying. I should have worded my post more clearly.
What i am trying to say is that you can only initiate a Bluetooth transfer from the device sending the file for security reasons. You cant "pull" a file for instance. But i would try to use WiFi to take control of your PC then push the file to the tablet via VNC from the tablet. So for instance, you are controlling the PC from your tablet, now you have full control as if you were sitting in front of your computer. Then to send a file from your tablet to the computer, just use Root Explorer or a similar browser app that allows sharing with bluetooth, then send the file from the tablet, use the VNC view to control your computer and accept the connection and file.

Thanks for clarifying. Now that I've thought about it, I realize that all of my BT exchanges have been a transfer from a device, they've never initiated a pull. For all the years I've used BT it's never occurred to me what was happening - in Windows a coupla clicks and " ... do you want to send a file or receive ..." yet even when you say receive, you have to move to the OTHER device to start it. hum...... being too poor to pay more attention I guess that's what happens.
As far as WiFi, I've used that in this senario, but we're staying in an RV park for awhile, and although they have good WiFi ( they should, I built it), it's too slow. I think I've simpler solution to elegant idea, the LAN Shares plug-in with Total Commander allows back and forth transfers, just tunnel inside a VPN.
Thank you again for clarifying - I could have died trying trying to get this to work.
