How to root AT&T Nexus S?

So a lot of people must have gotten this phone, but after searching this forum and google, I still cannot find a guide that is specific to this phone. How can I find a good method that is least likely to brick the phone?

if you manage to brick a nexus s then bravo,
as to rooting any nexus s root guide will help, however personally i suggest using borky's one click for for the nexus s

Thansk again, it worked!
For anyone looking step by step guide:
1. Download the Clockwork 3.0.2.4 file, Clockwork 4.0.1.4 did not work for me (it was able to unlock but would not detect the now unlocked phone)
2. Extract files to C drive or desktop
3. Enable USB Debugging on the phone by going to Settings->Application->Development
4. Run the PDANET installer included in the ZIP
5. Plugin the phone when asked to
6. Once drivers are installed with the phone ON, run the run.bat file included by right clicking and selecting Run As Administrator (If windows 7 or Vista)
7. Follow the prompts

Rooting possible with a command terminal?

Just got my nexus 5. Went to get my laptop only to find out its been stolen. Is there a way to root using the command terminal in say jumpy apps?
I'd hate to have to buy a Laptop just to root this phone. The root browser seems to allow access to all the relevant files. Anyone tried this?

Afaik, you'll need a pc to unlock the bootloader. From there I suppose you could do the rest on the phone using dd commands to get a recovery on. But since you'll need the pc anyway you might as well use it to get the recovery on.

How do you go to get your laptop to find out its stolen? Lol

Actually, you'll need fastboot working, not adb. They're different

Why don't you just borrow someone's pc or go to a internet cafe?

You could always try a library. All you need to do is download fastboot, run "fastboot oem unlock" and reboot. You can then do the rest on your phone. It shouldn't take you longer than 10 minutes.

ADB and Fastboot go hand and hand from my knowledge. Even a slim non full version SDK still has ADB .

What do you mean "hand in hand"?
They're both command line platform tools offered in the android SDK but thats about all they have in common. One is a minimalistic "linux shell" for interacting with the android kernel (adb) where as the other is a tool that manages the fastboot functions of the bootloader.

Correct.
You will need to have USB drivers, of course to use fastboot, which are often referred to as "adb drivers" but not the adb binary/exe itself

Last Internet cafe closes here and pale think rooting will damage their LT! The ones I asked.
I only posted this out of desperation. Library computers are locked up so can't accept drivers.
I've been rooting since the early days and I did a Samsung g2 without a computer. The boot was open. I just put the su, etc on the card and rooted it. As it was pre owned not sure if it had been unlocked or was like that from new. I've come from the nexus 4 mainly because of 4g.

Do you have another device that supports USB OTG? It can do everything the laptop can with ADB and fastboot. The ADB binary is shipped with android, you'll just need the ARM fastboot binary.

Rooting nexus 5 using adb

I need to root my wife's new nexus 5 using adb and fastboot. I had done this on my own nexus 5 but no longer remember the details. I don't even remember whether I should look for Flo or grouper!
This is a new nexus 5, running Android 4.4.2 build number Kot49H
I have adb and fastboot installed on my windows 7 pc from when I booted my own nexus 5 and 7.
What do I need to update? From where?
I want to use TWRP recovery.
What do I download, from where, to where?
What are the exact steps I need to take?

Read the link posted above mine, its VERY easy once you read the directions step by step. I mean easy, and I consider myself a noob.
Also, this is the Hammerhead device, not grouper or Flo, those are Nexus 7's

just as a sidenote.. you do not root using adb, adb isnt used at all. you root using fastboot. its not the same as adb, nor is it part of it.

I always unlock bootloader manually I find easier and saves time

once you figure it out that first time, itll take like 4-5 minutes to root your next nexus

I've had no end of trouble when I rooted my first two devices using toolkits. It took days and tons of driver anguish before I succeeded. Then I discovered adb and fastboot and it became a quick few minutes thing to do. I really don't know why they make these toolkits. My experience with them is that they made things harder, not easier, for a newbie. The memories of the toolkit problems is what got me anxious when I had to start rooting my wife's phone.
Anyway a great thank you to all who took the time to help.

Technically, the rooting is done via recovery
But yes that was my point - although I had to put the word "alone" at the end of my sentence because you could boot into recovery and adb push the su binaries

Unroot

I'm RMA my nexus so I tried to flash stock thru wugfresh kit but it gets stuck and won't do it . so I remember I did a back up as soon as I rooted my phone so I restored that . I unrooted thru the superuser app its self , I went thru advance options on the root kit and flashed stock recovery and then relocked my phone.
My question is if that's enough to send it back? Will they be able to tell I rooted ? After I relocked it it said it reset the flag as well so I guess that's good .
The reason I use tool kits because its easier and I'm nervous to try it without a tool kit.

If you're on stock rom, kernel, recovery with a locked bootloader and "false" tamper flag, you're good to go!
Can't help you out with the toolkit problem as I don't use them and I feel it does more bad then good! :silly: You yourself aren't able to make out what part went wrong with wug's toolkit whereas if you have downloaded the stock factory images and did it manually, we could help you out with the error on that particular step!

Yes, you can but make sure you don't restore the EFS.. If you do. Then your new phone is SCREWED! That's why I never recommend anyone restoring backups of different phones!

I went I to recovery and it's the little android with the triangle so I'm sure that's stock correct ? And here's a pic of the phone info ,im thinking its stock also

And yes it said something about resetting tamper flag when I relocked boot loader and now it won't show a lock when I boot up so its locked now.

Yes, everything looks peachy!
If you're not sure whether the tamper flag is reset or not.. Head over to bootloader and use this command : fastboot oem device-info
If the tamper flag is set to "true" then you haven't reset it correctly. If it's "false" then it's all good!
BTW, why are you RMA'ing the device?

Hey bro in the near future try not to use tookits for toying around for with these phones!! "Nexus" It's a lot easier to figure things out the fastboot way and cmds. As the other user stated they do more harm than good:silly: Good luck with ur RMA:good:

Trust me when you learn this way it's a lot fun.. And in the process you come to know a lot about your phone:good: It's fun flashing things! But you need to know what your flashing and what it's doing on your phone..

So I tried to factory soft reset but for some reason it wouldn't , I tried hard resetting and it just froze , now its just I'm a bootloop , I'm able yo get in to boot loader but since my device is locked already can I still reflash stock? I tried unlocking boot loader but the computer won't recognize the phone , its saying o need to check developers option which I can't .. Any help?

[Q] Nexus 5 Brick/Soft Brick

Hey guys,
New to this forum so I hope someone can help me out with this issue.
Status: Bircked/Soft Bricked..
CM11
Running ART
TWRP installed
Rooted
Unlocked bootloader.
CM11 has been running fine for me for quite a while until i switched it over to ART. It ran for a few days and then all of a sudden..BAM... it dies and wont boot into the OS or the TWRP now. I can get into the CM11 start screen and even to the point where it says"updating apps" it boots into the phone but starts giving me phone errors and then reboots itself into the CM11 logo screen..yadda yadda yadda.
Also, I cannot boot into TWRP. I get to the TWRP screen and it freezes on the TWRP initial screen, the screen without the options.
when I run fastboot and run a "Adb devices" in the command prompt i get the "emulator-5554 offline" error.
I have tried flashing twrp and even CWM onto the nexus 5, nothing seems to happen
Im in a jam and i hope someone can help me through this.

I looked at the [email protected] and was not able to download the program, keep getting a bad gateway off their site.
I also opened up Eclipse and found my emulator is offline, im still trying to figure out how to use it as we speak.

Try flashing the factory image in fastboot.
Also, adb commands are not going to work in the bootloader. You need fastboot commands.

Yah I installed the adb drivers, or at least I believe they are installed. I checked off the ones that needed to be installed. The device is showing up on Device manager as well

What happens if you lock the bootloader then reboot? Does it stay locked?

Also, when i give the lock command it locks the bootloader.
As soon as I reboot the loader, it says LOCK STATE: UNLOCKED again

I was afraid I'd see that. The bootloader didn't lock. That usually means you emmc flash memory is bad. You'll have to rma the device.

Hopefully. Google seems to be pretty cool about it. If you have to go through LG they'll probably charge you.

I don't think there is going to be a way. But I'd try this. Download the bootunlocker script from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40409356
Also have the twrp recovery image on your PC. Then boot into the bootloader. Try
fastboot boot recovery.img. Where recovery. img is the twrp recovery image. If that works it'll boot into twrp.
If it works adb push the bootunlocker script to your device and install it in twrp

So just an update, they are going to RMA the device. I told them everything I did to it and they are still going to take it back. Let's hope it is that emmc flash memory, it should be covered under the warranty as a hardware defect. Well I'm assuming it is .
Thanks for the help, unfortunately nothing seemed to fix it. Ah well we tried. I will update everyone on the process, so ppl in the future know if Google will honor that warranty.
