[Q] Text or SMS on P-900 WiFi over Hotspot? - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is it? I have a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Wi-Fi only edition.
What do you want to do with it? I want my wife to be able to text to and receive SMS/MMS messages on the Note.
Where do you need this to happen? Anywhere in the USA, whether over Wi-Fi or 4GLTE through the hotspot.
We have an AT&T Unite Pro hotspot for her to use to connect when not in a Wi-Fi zone. It has its own phone number- not sure if this is needed for this.
I'm wiling to pay a small fee (<$10) for a good app, but if there is a free one that would be even better.
She has a flip phone for calls. I assume it has Bluetooth capability but I am not looking to use the phone at all in this exercise. I want my daughter to be able to send a text/sms/mms to her mother from her iPhone and the Note to receive it whether on home Wi-Fi or hotspot.
Any helpful suggestions would be great. She does not use any Google services so I do not want to rope her into a Google Voice account if I can avoid it. Thanks!

Well Google voice is free. There is no "roping in" you just sign up and pick a phone number.
Look into "whatsapp" to see if fits your needs. It allows messaging to all sorts devices. Its free for a year then .99 after that.
But as far as I know. The only way to send sms messages on a WiFi device is using the Google voice app. You can even make WiFi calls to cell phones with a GV number and an app.

I'm looking for something that is as transparent as possible to both sides, not something that must be downloaded by everyone who wants to communicate.

I use MightyText from the Playstore. 100% free. You install MightyText on your phone, then the tablet companion app on your 12.2. Works perfectly for me on my Nexus 5.

This won't work. She has a feature phone (flip phone) and will not get an android any time soon.

As was stated earlier Google Voice is your best bet. I used it on my Motorola Xoom when my work phone would not allow text. You only have to install it on the tablet. As far as anyone else knows it is just another phone number that they send texts to or receive from. It works great.

If you have at&t as your service for cell phone just use their messaging app...or verizons if you have that. Then tada....not sure if either of those are your service..I use the At&t messaging app. No need to tether. Just WiFi and sync

texting app using your cell phone number? for Kindle Fire

Is there an app that can text messages using my cell phone number for Amazon Kindle Fire?
If u have sprint and Google voice u can do it.

Desk sms

Desk sms doesn't really work that well bc it just gets sent to your email and what not.. I would personally recommend tablet talk. Just make sure both phone and tablet are on the same wifi, run the program and sync. I use it a lot when I'm away from my phone

Google voice on everything.
Desksms works perfect. It will notify via google voice. This allows you to send and receive texts anywhere you have access to google voice as if it were sent from your phone.

Any other alternatives besides Tablet Talk and Desk SMS?
is there something in particular desksms doesn't do for you?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
It costs money.
Not in the Android Market??
mightytext new version might do the job
i've signed up for the mightytext web beta which supposedly works in any browser... current version works only on chrome extension, but their web version is in private beta. maybe u can ask the dev for invite?
It is in the market. And it cost what 5/year I think it was, to cover his server costs... hardly spend for a solid app that adds such versatility to your phone
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
Desksms doesn't work. I don't see where to go with it. In fact, I don't think it can do any sms. Also google voice requires you to have the Kindle Fire to be able to hear your voice. That obviously do not work because the Fire doesn't have a mic.
I use it daily. It does work. And its the only solution I've seen for sending a text from another device that will appear to the recipient as though it came from your cell number which is what the original post specified.
You need google talk on your kindle and desksms on your phone. Set desksms to notify in google talk. You will then be able to send and receive texts in google talk. What its doing is forwarding and then sending from the phone. So your phone will need to be on and in service. This works for any device that has access to google talk
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
Does anyone have any ideas regarding alternative applications (besides sms/texting) that require a phone number working on the Fire?
Someone said in a different thread that you could have Whatsapp working by doing a Titanium restore, but it received messages on the Fire or the phone at random.
I am using desksms and it works fine. I use mighty text from the market and it works very well on my laptop. Hopefully they develop it further for tablets.

That's probably where I've gotten confused. I'm using an iphone 3g with no android app for this.

Text messages from Verizon on CM10.

I keep receiving these weird text messages from 6250 and in the body of the text it says "VZWNMN:5" or sometimes "VZWMNM:3". What is this?

VZW sync
Hi all. This messaging is based on the Backup Assistant Plus that big red has set up with your phone. If you go to vzw.com/sync, you can see your email account being synced on their server and hence messages being sent to your phone. Turn off sync, but don't delete account, otherwise risk deleting the account on your phone.
If you don't see it there, go down the options on your account line at MyVerizon, there is something similar that you get automatically enrolled in "free" but is annoying needless to say.
Alternative is to download other email apps to hand your bidniz.

[Q] What is everyone using for sms on their WiFi Note 10.1?

Hello everyone.I'm wondering what everybody is using for SMS/MMS on their WiFi Notes? I would appreciate feedback as to what you are using and what features you like about it.Thanks
I would guess they use their phones?
I use mighty text. Works well. I switch between that and Google voice. Mighty text works best unless you are on Google voice then it's a toss up. No mms through Google voice but it syncs everything better than mighty text.

If you are guessing that, you have no idea what I am talking about. There are several apps that connect phone to tablet for this or use your phone number to sms thru email on the tab.Move on to your next extremely helpful post somewhere else.
I'm using tablet talk. I like it a lot it's really good but it's not free.
It syncs all your messages to your tablet. It uses WiFi and Bluetooth for it to work.
You can receive calls.

Well since in many countries it's illegal to spoof sender number I would say that any app that can do that is potentially a way to get your criminal record tainted. And know of at least two providers that do not deliver from spoofed sender numbers.

That is your providers SMSC you use and that is not at spoof. But if I send a message via my SMSC with your number as a sender that it's spoofing and illegal here. I can do that since I have my own SMSC and my contract clearly states that that it's grounds for termination and most likely a report to the authorities.

I use textfree. Can't send mms with it but can receive. Just wish the number they give had my area code.
I'm using Tablet Talk and it is brilliant. I was using Mighty Text, and was wary of whether TT would be worth the £1.79, and it totally was. I'm glad I took rhe plunge.

Google voice with lycamobile?

Is it possible to get google voice working with any other services besides the ones they have listed? I want to set it up with my lycamobile number. So is there a way to do this or is it not allowed unless they officially support it? I Google searched and all I could find was how to transfer your Google voice number but nothing about getting it working with other companies. Thanks

Abdel, I appear to be in the same situation as you. I am able to receive calls/texts using my Google Voice number, but I wasn't able to make calls using the number because Lycamobile isn't on the drop-down list on Google's "activate Google Voice on this phone" page. BUT then I just changed the setting in GV to "Making calls: Use Google Voice to make all calls" and it works perfectly, showing my GV number on phones I call and ringing my phone when people call my GV number. It even seems voicemails are handled by GV and not Lyca.
