[Q] Clear up android files on system? - General Questions and Answers

Hey Everyone,
If I go onto "My Files" on my Galaxy S4, I see there are at least 40 folders and probably 10 are ones that I know of, rest of them are apps developers such as "Halfbrick" so I had this question, is there any way that I could move all applications under one folder or whatever, rooted and unrooted (I'm currently unrooted)?
Thanks,
Nandish

These are probably cache files, that store temporary data controlled by a certain application. I don't know but these folders are created by apps, to store data, if you move them into another folder it'll result in a possible reset of the app? (Loss of data). If its on the root of the SD card, it has data for the app.
If its in the android folder, you can delete most of the folders excluding games as it will most likely have important data. Best way to clear up this is to go into Settings>Storage>Clear cache.
Don't worry about these folders, they are just folders with data information on the app. Well that's my theory and so far its been supporting me.

I know what they are (this sounds rude but it's not what I mean, I mean that I understand that they're important) but I guess there's no way to move them into one folder?
Thanks anyway!

as said, you cannot move them into another folder or delete them.

Moving them would merely force their recreation on app start.

I had the same problem, i followed the guide and got my device wiped, the secure way....
Note: You'll get all your data (including sd Card! )
You'll loose anything custom you've installed (but not the flash counter)

Help with Nandroid

Hey all,
I've been searching everywhere in google as well as in XDA with no success. I am trying to do a full Nandroid backup (just like people are advising you to do when changing roms).
I currently have Clockwork 3.0.0 and am Rooted on stock. When I go into recovery, the only thing I have in regards to backup is just "backup" and no "Nandroid Backup" like people are saying all over the forums. Do I have to install something specific? I am puzzled! Is nandroid a method of backing up or the name of a program?
Also, when I backed up using Clockword >> Backup I found its only around 300mb so I assume it doesnt backup your SD content (i.e. pictures and videos + programs) as well? Is there a way to do a FULL image with literally everything?
Any help will be appreciated!
Hi...well backup sounds about right. Don't worry about whether it says nandroid or not. Mind doesn't. Just go ahead and do the backup.
And as for the SD card...well no need to worry there either because the SD contents do not get wiped out anyway, so there's no need for it to be backed up in the sameway.
Hope that helps.

When I'm looking at the development section, it says that it will "WIPE ALL YOUR DATA". Doesn't this suggest I should also backup my pictures + videos?
Thanks for the help!
The only thing that wipes all your data and sdcard is a fastboot oem unlock, and it sounds like you're already past there. Flashing new roms and choosing "wipe data" in clockwork recovery does not touch your sdcard at all.
It's always a good idea to backup your photos and videos just in case. It only takes a few minutes and better to waste a few minutes than lose a precious irreplaceable video of the kid's first steps.
Nothing should wipe your sdcard other than the fastboot oem unlock, but that doesn't mean it can't be wiped by mistake. I just responded in another thread where the guy accidentally formatted his sdcard. Everything gone.
Better safe than sorry, in my opinion.
haha i agree, will Titanium Pro backup my photos/videos aswell (as you've commented on the other thread) or it just backs up apps ?

It will only backup apps/data on the internal rom space, not on the sdcard; so no, it won't take care of your photos/videos.
Mount the phone via USB, select mount USB storage, then drag and drop the folders with your photos/videos to your computer harddrive.
Camera photos and vids are kept in the /dcim folder if you use stock. Some 3rd party camera apps may put them someplace else.
I usually just make a full copy of the sdcard at one point, then use rsync periodically to keep it current.

So I guess this is one adv. of keeping apps on internal rom space.
Making a copy of the sdcard and resyncing it periodically sounds like a good idea IMO, what programe do you use to resync the sdcard?
thanks,

Titanium will backup apps and data that are on the sdcard if you put them there with the apps2sd feature. It's smart that way. I'm talking about the apps that store settings and stuff (like Titanium itself, Launcher Pro, ADW, the gym log apps I've used, lots of games, etc) that put user data on the sdcard outside of the protected or apps2sd storage area on the sdcard.
I don't use an app for rsync, I just use the rsync command from the terminal on my Mac.
There's a couple of rsync apps on the Market. Someone mentioned using an app to rsync in one of the threads on here not too long ago. Here's an appbrain link to a search on the term rsync, it only shows two apps.
What if I move the app using Gingerbread feature to "move to sd", will it still know to back them up?
/is that what u meant in the beginning by feature of apps2sd? not sure cause there is an actuall program that does this

Yes, that's what I meant. It also covers just about all of the various apps to the sdcard hacks that various rom makers have implemented over the last year or two; certainly the popular ones like cyanogen and darktremor's versions.
If you get Titanium Pro, pay for the license. It will enable batch restore where all your apps can be restored at once without user intervention, otherwise I believe you have to okay each one individually.
I just bought it and performed a batch back up thank you!
Now, assuming i have already perfomed a backup and now if i move the app2sd, will it know to update it next time?
Then, when i jump to the next ROM, all i have to do is batch restore?

If you move the app to the sd, the restore will put the app back in its location where it was during the backup. Just run a batch backup of all changed applications after moving anything around.
After you flash a new rom, just run a batch restore: apps and data only, usually not a good idea to restore system settings across different roms.

Will everything be gone

Well I no this is a noob question but I wanted to know if when you root your phone will you lose all of your data (apps, games, etc) and if you do will you have to download everthing again?

Once u unlock ur bootloader it will do like a factory reset an delete everything so u may wanna backup everything to ur computer
Just to be a bit more clear than the prior post, you will lose EVERYTHING, including the contents on the sdcard (photos, videos, etc). Mount your phone to USB storage and backup anything you care about from the internal sdcard partition.
There's precious little you can do to save/restore data that's stored on the internal ROM space until you're rooted.
By the way, this has been discussed in multiple threads already. It's probably in the FAQ stickied at the top of the forum. as well. You might get more detailed ideas/answers with a quick search.
So how do you backup the sns to your computer

when your not rooted you cant get anything off /data/ which would be game saves and app data stuff.
but anything on the SD card just copy off like you normally would

I think there are Market apps that will let you backup/save you SMS messages, but I'm not sure they'll actually let you restore.
Check out the various apps at this link: http://www.appbrain.com/search?q=sms+backup

SD Card Format - Full of...

Alright guys.
My SD Card seems to be full of folders that I have no clue what they're for or why they've been created. Im just about to install a fresh ROM to my phone & was wondering can I just go ahead of format my SD card (after I've backed up my photos etc.) and everything will be as good as new?
Cheers

Those kind of folders?
Lots of programs save their settings and data on the card, so when you load a new ROM, are you planning to restore settings and data from somewhere or start completely from scratch?

Nah, I know those folders are standard, Im talking about things like:
MXBROWSER
PDV_LOG
QUICK START GUIDE
SAFETY GUIDE
SPEEDSOFTWARE
TUNNYBROWSER
TAPATALKXDAPRE_DOWNLOAD
I appreciate all these things are folders created by App's I've installed at some point throughout the life of my phone, but I would be nice if I could just clean off everything & start from scratch...
I know what I'm doing with my phone in respect to what apps I want etc now. So I wont be installing any old crap if you see what I mean...
Thank you
As long as your not restoring apps with titanium or similar just go ahead a format won't make much difference mind, they'll all be back in a week or 2 lol
I don't tend to bother unless there is a real reason to format your sd

Gotcha. MXBROWSER is Maxthon Browser, SPEEDSOFTWARE could be a number of things - Root Explorer created the folder on mine. TAPATALKXDA is the XDA app (based on the Tapatalk app).
Quick start and safety guide are manuals HTC puts there

Complete Wipe?

Noob here!!!!
I'm running out of storage space on my Xoom. I have tons of files and folders on there that I believe aren't even being used. Even though I've done a full wipe in the past, it still seems to leave a bunch of data I am no longer using. What's the best way to back up what I have now, wipe it out "completely" and then restore the backup? Can this be done without losing root?
Edit: Sorry Mods, I had two windows open and thought that I was posting this in the General Thread. Can you please move this and not delete. Thank you.
ATTENTION: [Q]uestions Posted HERE Will Be DELETED!

Instead of wiping everything, install "disk usage" from the market. When you run it it will list the folders that are using the most space.

[Q] Wipe SD card or just delete folders back to stock?

Hi everyone,
I'm looking to remove some of my old excess folders off my SD Card and I was wondering if anyone knew what the stock folders are I should be keeping or if it's ok to wipe the SD card? Wasn't really sure if it was ok or not to do so and thought I should ask..
Thanks!
You can wipe the SD-card within android. Its safe and wont make the card unusable or anything like that.
Just remember to save the stuff you want to keep before formatting it
Thanks for the info. I wasn't so sure as I came from a HTC Desire and ended up using ROM's that dumped half the system onto the SD card so was a bit wary with that.. :S

I think any apps that is installed to sd will be deleted so make sure none are.
How?
How can I wipe the card?
I often tried some apps, and now I installed CM so it would be great to have an "empty" SD.
Is there any tool which logs all folders/files that have been created when an app has been installed?

Think adb can do that but why would you need to know that?
i would make a back up of your sdcard to your pc before doing anything
Backup not the best solution...
especially when you "on the road". Sometimes when I'm outside (waiting for the bus or so) I've time to look around in the play store. Screenshots are nice, but it's always better when you try an app on your own.
But once installed you see "oh that one is crap" you want to uninstall it, but the folders that has been created are still there. So it would be nice if there would be a app that watches for the changings during installation and you are able to delete all the folders and files of the crappy app.
If you delete data before uninstalling the app everything should disappear.
Actually, I think its only if you uninstall through play store the data is kept.
TitaniumBackup will remove all of it when using it to uninstall stuff.
