Not able to access my data outside my Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got an issue with both my Nexus 5 and my Nexus 7and CM11
Posted questions in the nexus 7 forum, but even if the reasons are not the same (For my N7 deadly switch from Davilk to ART, while my N5 was a nighties upgrade), in the end both devices are in the same state: they boot, I access to my data, many of CM11 menus are screwed up and notifications don't show (3/4G doesn't work either, but Wifi does).
I wnat to factory reset and install clenaly a new ROM. Big probleme: although I do regular Titanium backups (every night actually) and I can access this data on my phone when booting, I cannot push he data outside the phone.. Whenever I connect my N5 to the PC it recognizes it, I can click on it, but when checking, it just shows absolutely no dtaa. I tried enabling/disabling MTP, same for USB debug and also uninstalled all drivers and tried both ADB and usual N5 drivers. No luck
Anyone has an idea? I feel really like an idiot

Is the phone turned on and the screen unlocked when you try to access it ? As the device will not let you gain access to the data if the phone is screen locked?

Yes screen on
Unlocked although indeed it behaves like it is locked.
You have a point I will try disabling all security, that may help.

[Q] Transfer Photos Not Working

Hi all
Today I got my nexus 5, I am unable to copy my Photos from PC to my Nexus 5 using both options in the Nexus 5, whereas all the others files are being copied without any problem. It just gets stuck at some point while transfering the photos, and when the phone screen is on it gives error, unfortunatly storage/media stopped working and when the screen is on standby it just stops.. I checked both on PC with Windows8 and Laptop with Windows7.
please help me...
regards
I had a similar issue. How many pictures are you copying at once?

actually many, more then 1.5 GB
I think I read somewhere that there is an issue so what I did was break if down to a few groups. This way if it fails I know where, unmount then mount and try again. I know it's a pain but sometimes it's necessary.

I've had the same problem recently with both my Nexus 5 and S4. I just had to keep trying small groups until I got them all copied without error. I was using Windows 8.1 64 bit.

doesnt show the contact name from the contact, shows the number only with international prefix only.
The photo transfer is an issue alot of us have dealt with. I can't either unless I break them down to small folders but thats a PITA.
i downloaded Airdroid instead. Dropped them in via the web. Worked very well
I have run in to this issue with windows, and linux. Even with different phones. Its the way Android handles the internal storage. MTP allows the phone and your computer access the storage at that same time. I tried a few different cables but didn't seem to matter. One trick that I used was to put the phone in to airplane mode on a fresh reboot. Start the copy from the computer and do not touch the phone.

[Q] Dead screen + not recognized by pc

Hi XDA!
I dropped my Nexus 5 from a height < 3 feets, it got a little scratch on the corner, however the screen has stopped functionning. I tried restarting the device but it still keep displaying black and white vertical lines. The good news is that Google will swap my device free of charge, the bad news is, I am unable to backup the data from my Nexus. Unfortunately, I have no backup of my photos and videos from wedding and vacation
Things I know/have tried:
Debugging mode is on, my Nexus was detected by my computer with no problem prior to the ''accident/drop''
I am no longer able to browse the internal storage, when I plug my Nexus 5 in my computer's usb port, it detects a media device(Nexus 5), but when I double click on it, it doesn't display internal storage.
ADB device -l, does not list anything
Any other ways to back up my data?
Thank you,
@cuem small question here, do you turn on your G+ Photos auto backup?

I did not , I wasn't even aware of that option. I also turned off dropbox auto-sync because it annoyed me to have my pictures synced between my computer and 2 laptops. Now... I regret it

I'm not sure but maybe these links can give you some enlightenment regarding adb and usb driver:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...nt/adb-fb-apx-driver-universal-naked-t2513339
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...nosing-usb-driver-adb-issues-windows-t2514396
Good luck!
I re-installed ADB using your link, but I don't think that's the issue. I read somewhere that the screen need to be unlocked for the computer to be able to browse the files from the internal memory. There are some weird behavior with my broken Nexus, I can't receive any calls, but the alarm rang off this morning and my LED flashed, it means I received a kind of notice or something.
I also read somewhere that it was possible to flash your device and in the process remove the unlock code lock, however if I do that, wouldn't I void my Nexus 5 warranty?
Thank you,
PS*. I don't know how I could flash, computer does not detect my Nexus and I can't have access to my screen since it displays black/white stripes + it is not being responsive to touch input( seems dead)

Recover Data from (unrooted)Nexus 5 with broken screen without UBS-Debuging turned on

Hello,
as u can read in the title the screen of my (unrooted!) Nexus 5 is broken due to a bicycle accident. The phones flashes if I receive a new message but the screen just dont turn on. Unfortunately I have USB-Debugging disabled...
Now my question is, how can I recover my data? I really need it and ofc have no backup
I read a lot but I still have no idea...
I think, because USB-Debugging is disabled, it will be a lot harder.
(Note: Because I am new, I can't post links, so I replaced "www" with "[worldwideweb.]", sorry )
I found the following tutorial on YT:
[worldwideweb.]youtube.com/watch?v=B7Z_r0Z0CEo
The problem is ofc, that the Nexus hasn't got two charging ports...
Also I found this:
[worldwideweb.]androidphonesoft.com/resources/enable-usb-debugging-android-broken-screen.html (search for "Method 2")
but there is the problem, that this tool is only available for Samsung-Devices...
Now my last hope is, that I can recover my data with adb, but also there I got the problem, that I have USB-Debugging disabled...
(And I dont know, if I have to root my phone? (and if it is even possible without working screen?...)
So my Problems are:
- No USB-Debugging enabled
- No Root
- PC recognizes my phone but not more... (in CMD: "adb devices" doesnt list any device...)
So is there a way of recover my data? It's very important for me and I would be very grateful, if anyone could help me and accompany me through the process with instructions!
I had the same problem and couldn't find a solution. I tried for 3 entire days with any method found or that came to mind. Finally I decided to change the screen with one from eBay ,the cheapest one . If you find a solution let me know. The closer I could get was using an app that was supposed to let you control and see your nexus 5 screen on your PC screen. This app of which I can't remember the name had some bugs, maybe was an old not updated app, because I could see my nexus 5 lockscreen and an arrow controlled by the PC touchpad to simulate the touch, but sadly nexus 5 couldn't react to the arrow movement,a and nexus 5 screen was not full but only a part

But I think, that ur USB-Debugging was activated, wasn't it? Because I don't think, that this would work without USB-Debugging activated...
And then it would be easy, with USB-Debugging enabled there would be like 100 ways
I found no way to retrieve data . How would you do with Usb debugging? Or maybe I don't remember correctly and was for the fact that I had a lockscreen pattern and so Usb debugging is useless... Sadly I have a lg g watch that was not settled as a trusted device to disable the security or had home wifi area to do the same. Maybe there was even the fact that after a reboot you have to put the screen pattern the first time before the automatic unlock. I even tried to recover the partition from bootloader , but if I remember correctly it was hanging after some minutes. Don't ask me why emmc was god on nexus 5, I use the PC to do phone repair, and I'm a technician. I had the same trouble copying the full sdcard partition from recovery, and even restoring it to a new nexus 5 .Because the LCD was not as the original one and I sold the repaired for the same price of another not repaired n5. In the process of copying sd card partition content , it hangs another time. Seems to not digest the copying of some files under android subwoofers. Sorry for the confusion but I don't remember correctly, it was a nightmare. I had 2 infernal weeks because N5 is my first device even to work and I had to use my second phone , a really ultra cheap and underpowered Deco 77x(dual core1ghz with 512mb of ram) which has an M and even an N ROMs that works better than the stock 4.4... Slow as hell but the only way to save my work since my mother steel my galaxy Nexus. Try only to think I had to do some tries for 2 days, order the new screen, change it at a level that was invisible and good for the new user, wait for the new, try to restore a tarp backup to a different phone, find a way because it's not possible, copy sdcard partition , copy manually all the files which broke the full automatic copy process, compare all the folders files ... It was a PITA. Now I backup every month to a Usb otg Kingston key, at least I have only to restore it to a different device and do the sdcard things.... It's slow to create a backup but I can do it when is in charge, because the USB key do charge pass through and this is greaatttt even to watch movies (don't do that always, Usb key reach a really hot temperature, but case ,Usb port or phone shell reported not even a minimal sign)
The copy stopping could be a windows 10 bug ,never had that in 7 ... This new os is s*** ,has many small fu****g bugs... I wish I never updated ,I found those bugs after 1 month so I can't go back.

Ok, so there is no good solution? :/
Can I just replace the screen with a cheap one from ebay and then use it again? This should work, shouldn't it?
You can try yourself, but I found no way, I don't want to discourage you, but I tried all comes to mind and all gone wrong, and I'm an average user. Yea you can get a pretty cheap display... I tell you the truth, I didn't changed it for a new one after the repair because the display was not good, but because I was in warranty and here in europe Google gives you a refurbished unit if you have problems with a warranty of 2 years. So because my phone repaired was 90% the same as a new phone but battery starts to degrade I took the chance to request a refurbished unit because of the battery and to reset my warranty to two years. Mine was a 2013 unit, and I asked for a change other 2 times... I m in warranty til 2018 now . Going back to the display, from a technician examination, I can tell you that all the display I bought to repair my customers units seems to be original displays with original touchscreens, only slightly variations in colours calibration like on preassembled units. Only the plastic frame sometimes seems not legit, because 2 times I found it a deeper black and more rough (like sandstone of one plus one)
So I simply buy myself a new display and replace it and then I should (ofc) be able to backup it, right?
Is there a difference between like 30$ screens to 60$ screens on ebay for example?

Then I would create an bootable usb-stick with Linux and would try it

Wait wait
Turn the Nexus 5 ON , and other android phone with OTG SUPPORT.
Connect OTG cable to Other Android device.
Now connect your Nexus 5 to the Android device via USB cable.
Connection goes like this:
android device - otg - usb - Nexus 5
Now you can see contents of NEXUS 5 ON *other* Android device.
Hope it helps.

You take Another Nexus 5 or any other device from a friend.
Connect OTG cable to the friend's device then connect ur Nexus 5 to your friend's.
Then your files will appear in ur friend's device.

Need to recover files for police (D6603)

Hi there.
I have a Sony D6603 where the screen has been broken. The phone starts up and you can feel it responding to commands, the screen backlight comes on but no text etc
My problem is this. The phone was stolen last month but a tip off allowed me to get it back. We know the culprit but he keeps demanding the phone back as he has important data on it. We said no we would give it to police. However the police say they cannot go thru the phone and that I need to get the data off to show them. This culprit is so desperate for the phone that he attempted to break in the house to steal the phone back!
Problems -
When connected to computer, it shows the phone as a drive but is blank
No way to turn USB debugging on (Is there a way of using some sort of recovery to get files off even though I cannot access the debugging screen to turn it on?
This is very important so any help will be appriciated :good:
This is hilarious
Have you tried enabling File transfer after plugging your phone in? The phone is shown bank when file transfer is not enabled.

Can't you film yourself doing a factory reset then suggest they sue you for losing data on your phone whilst it was stolen.
I have actually had to do this with a Z3 with a dead screen. If it is encrypted however you will have no luck so don't even try as it will force a factory reset and you lose everything.
Use this to install TWRP recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/recovery-root-mm-575-291-lb-t3435214
Follow the OP exactly and you will have recovery.
Boot to recovery (when rebooting press the down volume key at the first green light) and then use adb (TWRP now has this) to command TWRP to commence a data backup: http://www.pocketables.com/2014/10/using-twrps-new-adb-interface.html
(or if you can just extract the data with adb directly this will also work, but I don't see it as a command.)
As far as I know if you use flashtool and TWRP you won't need to use the screen and with TWRP's adb interface you should have more luck getting the data.
Good luck - careful when you get the data that you don't break any weird laws for looking at it. Might be a breach of his privacy blah blah. Anyway he's very stupid for using a stolen phone for sensitive data....

Galaxy S5 with broken screen

Hi there.
Please could someone suggest how I can migrate all the data from a Galaxy S5 with a broken screen over to a new Galaxy S5 which is the identical model.
The broken phone is not locked and internally is working normally but after being dropped I think the LCD has gone so badly that I cannot make out anything on the screen. It still seems to respond to any touch input OK.
If I could see it I would have simply used Samsung Smartswitch which is installed on both phones to transfer everything. However, without being able to see the screen I can’t find it in the apps to open it.
If I could remotely get the phones desktop up on my PC maybe I could open the app from there. With Smartswitch open on both phones I could see on the new phone where to tap on the old on to make it start the transfer.
Does anyone have any suggestions how I can either open the app remotely or maybe suggest another way to move everything across.

If you have or can get USB debugging enabled on the device, this tool should work well for you.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395
If you never personally enabled USB debugging in the system settings on your device, then it isn't enabled, which means you'll have to get it enabled somehow. There are few ways to get it enabled even with the broken screen, but it very much depends on exactly which model number your S5 is. Look in system settings>about phone>device info>model number or system settings>about phone>hardware info>model number to find your model number, or you can remove the back cover and look behind your battery to find the model number.
I'll try to help as much as your device will allow me.
But first, tell me exactly what kind of data you want to transfer.
Do you mean the usual user data such as pictures and etc..?
Or do you also mean the user settings, info for their various logins/accounts, banking info and deeper more personal or even system info?
Does the user have an active Samung account with the broken device registered in their account? If so, you can try transferring via their Samsung account.

Just to clarify, it is my brothers phone that is broken and he and I both have the same model. The new phone is also the same model which has been ordered but has not arrived yet. It should arrive either this morning or Monday.
However, for the moment I can at least try things out on my phone first. On my phone USB Debugging is off by default so I am sure it has not been enabled.
As I said previouly, the touch screen seems to respond because I can still answer calls simply by knowing where to swipe. I know where the apps button is on the home screen but obviously I cannot scroll through the apps to find the settings icon.
I am hoping to transfer as much as I can including apps and user settings, texts, etc.
My brother has not registered for a Samsung account.

To enable USB debugging, you can try using one phone as a guide to go through the settings menu. On the broken phone, using the working phone side by side while copying the exact motions and touchs try navigating to system settings>about phone>software info>build number(or wherever build number is located in your device settings, it varies), tap 7-10 times really quickly on the spot where build number is located on the list, if you get it right, you'll enable developer options, from there, using the other phone as a guide, go to system settings>developer options>USB debugging and enable it.
Or, try this tool to get USB debugging enabled while in download mode, and then use Odin to flash TWRP custom recovery instead of the stock firmware as described in the guide, you don't need to flash the firmware, just TWRP if you choose to do so while you are at it, TWRP can be used to backup and transfer the data but involves flashing the other device with TWRP also.

Once you get USB debugging enabled there are options:
1) You can use the tool I linked you earlier.
2) You can use adb to backup the data that you want to keep then use adb to transfer the data to the new device, adb works through a command terminal on PC and requires no touch input, you can do everything by command line if you find/know the correct commands to do what you need, as described in the link below, but you can ignore the stuff about unlocking your bootloader.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/general/guide-phone-backup-unlock-root-t1420351
3) You can flash TWRP custom recovery via Odin and then use TWRP to backup the data that you want to save and then flash TWRP on the device the data is to be transferred to then use TWRP on that device to restore all of the data that you saved onto the new device, if the device that is being replaced via warranty is the exact same device and will be used by the same person, you can completely backup everything on the device and then completely restore all of it on the new device. Just verify that your bootloader is not locked before you flash TWRP, it won't work with a locked bootloader.
4) You can try using Samsung Smartswitch on PC.
Those are just the options I can think of off the top of my head, there may be some other ways, it's just a matter of what you are comfortable with or not.
If you are comfortable with one of these options, I'll try to help you through whatever you need or don't understand. If you choose the stuff that involves flashing the device(s), I need to check some specifics about your device(s) before you do so and I need to be certain you understand how the flash/backup/restore process works in order to make sure that nothing gets messed up or lost/wiped during the process.

Thank you so much Droidriven. The new phone arrived this morning and your idea of using smartswitch from my windiws PC did the trick.
I only had to touch once on the broken phone to trigger the backup to my PC which worked a treat. After that everything else was plain sailing and the new phone is all set up with all the data intact.

Good to go, glad to help.
I thought it might, I just wasn't sure about whether USB debugging was required by SmartSwitch, I have never needed to use SmartSwitch so I'm not familiar with its ins and outs.

No, USB debugging isn't required on smartswitch.
My brother is like a kid with a new toy now that he has his phone back with all his stuff restored and working.
Thank you again.
