Question about cataclysm / ROMs in general - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all. I had the n5 a while back and at the time cataclysm was running great. I moved into a note 3 and within a month or so I really started missing my n5. So now I'm back. I see theres ALOT more ROMs and the cataclysm thread was locked. I flashed beanstalk and it's AWESOME but final fantasy dimensions and ff5 aren't working. PLUS, other games make the device hot enough to Fry an egg. So my question is kinda twofold: 1) will cataclysm (last updated in DEC of 2013 still work, and 2) what ROM out there has a great amount of customization but still runs games well?
Thanks so much.

1. Yes
2. Try them and find out what you like

Cataclysm got closed because it was just people continually posting about where the dev was. It's still fine. The download link is still the latest version 4.4.2 so if you wanna use it, do

1. Cataclysm has and will always work. The customization based in Cataclysm ROM are essentially those that you can't get with apps. So things like LED notification, you will have to find a 3rd party app. However, there are other useful customization implemented like a fifth number row on AOSP keyboard (the 5th row of numbers can also be resized). Sometimes customization can be a bit of a hassle but once you finish it, you won't go to another ROM. Some features just grow on you I haven't switched ROMs in ages (or rather I went to try other ROMs but i went back after trying it for 5 minutes).
2. I believe Final Fantasy is just a layout issue and more of an app problem maybe? But at any rate, the Nexus 5 and its Snapdragon 800 has pretty much current generation hardware. It can run anything fine (so long as the app is coded properly and not poorly like Gameloft apps are).

[Q] Lost data

I just flashed the latest version of cm10.1 and now i have an R over my signal bar. Can someone tell me how to fix this? This happened once before when i flashed the 12182012 cm10.1 and it took me forever to fix.

Yea we are in the hundreds of new posts on this one. Would help if some would read before they flash.
Agreed, it's getting ridiculous!
People know this.... 4.2 rom's have data problems. Practically every rom thread discusses this in a high level of detail. There are fixes if you read. Not gonna hand out this answer, as it's been said over and over in the forums. It's a source issue, even nexus devices are experiencing this issue.
Next, 4.2 will completely change your storage arrangement on your device. Legacy/and 0 folders will become dominant due to the multiuser features. Read, and learn what this will do, and how to recover from it if you downgrade back to 4.1. The op's all warn of these issues! :screwy:

Damn Duck. Even the devices released with 4.2 have problems. How they think gonna be stable on unsupported devices. I have $600 device. I want everything it came with to go faster but not willing to have cutting edge broke ****.
Dog, it took me all of 2 min of reading to know to stay away from 4.2 on our s3 at this time. I agree, the hit or miss on data is to risky, especially when I'm a year and a half from an upgrade!
I'm running stock rooted pure Google 4.2.1 on my Nexus 7, and it is still a WIP. For custom roms, the multiuser partitioning for source/cm based roms is causing headaches. So much is different than 4.1. Simple theme engine themes are borking the devices, as the legacy folder doesn't know where to apply it. Brand new nexus and s**t is broken, how the hell is our s3 gonna be any better running this android version at this time! Hell, cm10 based roms are still lacking full Samsung source coding....

Glad to see you duck. Haven't heard from you for a while. Hey man. I'm rockin stock deodexed, kerneled, tweaked, themed 4.1.1 with all the 4.1.1-4.2 inverted apps available. **** stable. Everything works. And no hiccups. I'm good to go. Running 1.72/384 with Quad of 6500. If they didn't see my right handed app button wouldn't know I was running TW. Fast and smooth enough for me and I can call home if I need to.
You too, been on eclipse aosp for the longest time. All decked out. Running a mix of Gunthermic's dh inverts, b-boys, and justins. Will be rocking some synergy once I finish up some beta theme testing

Google Experience S4

Hello there. Like many of you I love my S4 but want a more Google experience to my phone. A while so I posted a topic about how to improve your S4 without root to make it feel more like a stock android phone on the original Samsung rom. I loved the original Stock Samsung ROM but I wanted something different. Here is what I did to my phone to make it stock android.
I rooted my phone with motochopper following videos from wwjoshdew on YouTube. (Great channel with awesome helpful videos)
With root I improved some of the things that Samsung has going with the phone. Although Google makes the best... So I flashed a ROM.
I installed goo manager from the play store and then installed TWRP from goo. After this I created a backup if the Stock Samsung ROM and wiped the necessary files. I then flushed CyanogenMod 10.1 which is amazing.
Now to make the most of this ROM make sure to do a couple of things.
- install Nova launcher
- Reset the CPU and under clock
- optimize battery life
This will make the phone buttery smooth in everything that it does. I am running CM10.1 at 1.45ghz and getting battery for DAYS!!! I'm also using LMT launcher for Pie control which just adds to the phones new ROM. Play with the phone and add screenshots of the phone.
CyanogenMod 10.1 is a great alternative to the stock Samsung ROM that allows for the user to have a more Google experience. Its truly amazing and with its additions to the stock Android OS it is amazing!
Enjoy the ROM and enjoy using it!
Sent from my SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
I have similar setup, the only difference is that I used a PAC-ROM instead of just Cyanogenmod. I can confirm that the performance is also buttery smooth. I haven't tried throttling down CPU clocks yet, but I'll give it a try and report back what I find on PAC-ROM
This is hardly "the Google experience" Its cyanogenmod... Granted its built from AOSP source, but its definitely far from stock android.

Is there a stock "GE" ROM out there - I've been hunting through the forums for some time - for a relative newbie the alphabet soup posts are tough to decrypt but I don't see any straight up GE roms?
Yes there's a couple. Pretty stable also. I'm running task aokp and its by far my favorite ROM. Dude knows his stuff.

I think once CM 10.2 comes out with the new camera I'll be happy (assuming it lives up to they hype). The current CM camera is not especially good and a little unstable to boot. HDR doesn't work correctly either.
I greatly prefer the CM experience (and AOSP) to the stock TouchWiz one, mostly for reasons of aesthetics, but the AOSP and CM cameras are both way behind.

My theory:
The new cm will only live up to the hype on nexus devices, why? We are still working with the same camera drivers/libs...all it really is, is just a new app fir the camera...but we still need good source ti work with from samsung

I've seen those, and even installed a few. They're all modified versions of the stock GE in some way shape or form. I suppose the question should be, are there any unmodified Google Edition ROMs available for the S4?

I think I may be "last man standing" with this phone soon! It will be three years old this coming February, right? Pretty amazing run for a phone that was abandoned by Samsung/T-Mobile not long after it was released.
Is JB that much of a stretch on the hardware that KitKat is hopefully going to provide relief? Or is it more that people want the latest and greatest?
KK has the ability to set RAM requirements to 512mb, like our phone has. JB wants a gig to work reliably. Which is why apps like the keyboard keep force closing on JB.
I can verify that KK is actually amazing on 512mb RAM phones. It it awesome one my Vibrant. If you guys can get ART working on the SGS4G, it will probably be one of the smoothest things we have had in a while.

Actually, you won't be "last man standing". Since our contract is up and by keeping our phone our monthly bill has gone way down, wife, children, and I have all decided to keep this phone. It does exactly what we want it to do and does it very well. I have been running CM9 for quite a while now...have not gone to any of the JB ROM's because I need working GPS. Since I am not a developer, I can only hope that some of our developers stay with this phone and can come up with a fully functioning JB or even KK. But for now, ICS works fine for me.
I beg to differ on the last man standing, although im replying from a different phone i have 2 sgs4gs next to me and this has always been my fav device. On this i577 i got it unlocked and put my tmobile sim in. In cm10.2 and 11 if i flash att mode. It shows 4g icon which i thought was odd for cm. On tmobile modem flash it only shows hsdpa+. Anyway id have to say that kitkat on this device seems so memory management crazy ( i guess in a good way ) that i think it would work to par or better then jb on t959v. I think giving the right partition layout is key. I think dao said if he was ever going to do kitkat it wouldnt be a port. I hope for it for this device... I think the most stable running are djl 10.1 and slim bean 10.2 w/0902 nilmhl kernel that sets 396mb. Kk seems to be faster then jb on most roms on i577 and its still in alpha. Battery is tiny bit an issue tho

I never would have thought of calling Google "bloatware" back in the Froyo days -- T-Mobile, yes, but...
Now I find that 20 GB for the "out" directory isn't enough to compile cm-10.2
gapps, at least for ICS, can be trimmed pretty substantially and still have Play and Maps. I suspect though that many want JB or later for the Google apps, not just as a platform for other apps.

Yah, I agree, n moreover, kitkat gapps w ART compatibility requires extra space for odex files also, not mention addition space taken by apps after ART conversion so mayb Kitkat helps w the RAM comsumption, but at the same time it consumes resources as well (including specific partitions like /system n /data). So sad that Sammy n T-mo just left us 1GB for all of the partitions (or correct me if I am wrong)
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, every .apk in /system ends up needing its .odex somewhere -- on our device that means either the Dalvik cache in /data, or, if you use something like Titanium Backup, moved back into /system. Either way, you're working against the 1 GB hardware limit for both pieces in the current file-system layout.
You can potentially use the microSD for /data (that's what I'm doing under ICS), or go to extremes put everything on the microSD (which seems excessive). I'm trying to clean up the 10.x build tree to make the merge with KitKat a lot cleaner and clearer. I'm also helping @bhundven a bit on seeing what can be cleaned up (removed) in the kernel sources to get that closer to "mainline" kernel code.
I'd be happy to help out
I'm probably going to pickup a new phone for the lte and screen res, but I'm willing to work on this. I'm just not sure where to start; so far I haven't been able to get a working 4.3 build as there is little info on building for this device.

If you are holding on to the S4G just for bill sake, then you should look into the Moto G. It comes unlocked. $199 for the 16GB version and 50GB storage for two years on Google Drive. 8GB version is $179. I am not telling you to ditch the S4G, but it is something to look into. GPS on stock KitKat 4.4.2 locks under a second sometimes. It hasn't taken over a minute for me yet, even indoors? No LTE, but the S4G doesn't either. You still get HSPA+ on the Moto G, but it only reads as 3G. Camera is not that great, but it can take some nice shots. Same goes for everyone else I think it is a great phone! It just came out, so not that much dev support right now. Dev support is expected though Just something to think about.

Help choosing a ROM.

There's so many Roms here it's hard to choose a place to start. Can I get some suggestions of a good stable ROM that brings improvements over stock as well as everything working like cellular stuff.I just feel like a lot of the Roms seem like they are very similar and I'm not sure what to try. Thanks.

It's all a matter of personal preference.
But, personally, I would suggest BeerGang. It's still technically in the Alpha stage, but I've been running it for the past day and have been completely satisfied. No random reboots, no random FCs, and it has a good deal of features without having too many -- I'm not a fan of ROMs like BeanStalk, CM, etc because there are so many different options to tinker with, and many of them affect the stability and speed of the ROM. The dev (benjamin.j.goodwin) is consistently providing support for it, and I only seeing it getting better.
After BeerGang I'd recommend Purity. I was a long time fan of Purity for all of the same reasons I like BeerGang. Purity is also past the Alpha stage, and offers a little more in features than BeerGang does as of now. It comes built with BusyBox installed (if you're into script optimization,) and is a solid experience for me during my short time using it.

OK thanks a lot I'll check those out. I know everyone says it's up to preference and I agree but with the nexus 5 there are way too many roms to just try them all out lol so it'd be nice to have somewhere to start. So do either of those have the themer app like from cm? Either way I'm gonna try it but just curious. I think I'll try purity first and see if I like it.

I do like the looks of beergang it is on my list to try. If you want aosp style the big one is CM. There are a lot of ROMs that use cm as a base. I like paranoid personally or pacman. If you want something newer try omni it is well written runs almost flawless and has a write up here on xda. It has some unique features as well like double window.

Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile and running Wicked ROM to the Nexus 5. Overall, it's a nice phone, but a few little things I miss are:
WiFi Direct - it's in there on KitKat, but no way to share anything unless you use/purchase separate apps that are incompatible with each other? What gives?
OTG support - I know they want to push "the cloud" on everybody and I knew going in that this phone didn't have microSD support, but planned on using an OTG cable to swap out pics/videos, etc but again this is not usable unless you purchase another app?
I was hoping that for once with a Nexus phone, that I'd be able to avoid the root/Custom ROM/update/repeat cycle, but these missing features are a big disappointment for me.
Anyone know which Custom ROM(s) include the features I mention above, along with good support and stability? Or is this the curse of living on "the bleeding edge?"
I look forward to your suggestions!

Tips for new 5 user

The Nexus 5 has been out a while. I am getting a used one from a friend. His payment: dinner at Famous Daves (his choice).
Any tips or tricks i should know about this device compared to other nexus devices? I had a galaxy nexus at one point and gave it up for the Note 2 which is what I am giving up now.
Just thought I would see if there were any quirks, good ROM's, or anything before I start using it.
Just a heads up:
Noticed your profile mentions you're on Verizon, which you can't use with the Nexus 5.

May need to replace the battery, otherwise the offer not bad.

I've tried a few custom roms but my favorite combination on this phone is still the stock rom, rooted with Xposed framework and the Gravitybox module installed. The good thing about the N5 is there are lots of good ROMs and Kernels out there to try out. I like Xposed because it allows you to modify/add features to the the stock google experience (It's kind of a soft-mod.) Either way, a custom kernel is a must. I've tried several, but on my N5 I prefer Franco Kernel. His $2-$3 app on the play store (Franco Kernel Updater) is worth every cent. I agree with replacing the battery if the phone is a few years old.

I saw all of the ROMs in the forums. That is something I will like. The Note 2 forums have run dry. The only ROM still being developed is CM12.1 and even that is pretty buggy. Can't keep my bluetooth on to save my life (also to connect my pebble). That forum is pretty dead now.
