[Q] Google play services wakelock - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Having an unbelievable issue with wakelocks destroying my battery, but this is a bit different from the usual stuff you hear about, just read on:
I came from an S4, my wife bought a Nexus5 recently and I was already done with my S4, with all of it's bloat and stuff I don't use (only the camera made me stay but eventually I broke..),and on top of that, sice I upgraded my S4 to 4.4.2 it began having battery issues, it would stay awake all the time, making the phone die in ~7 hours.. so after ALLOT of attempts to figure this out, I decided to start fresh, get rid of the S4 and get a nexus5.
To my surprise, as soon as I finished configuring my N5 (unlock, root, bootloader, xposed+gravity box, the usual apps, nothing fancy) it began experiencing the same battery wake lock drain. now, my wife's N5 is absolutely the same as mine, maybe an app here and there are not the same but I'm not running anything unconventional, I have Beautiful widgets, the usual Google stuff, exchange email etc. Google play services is waking up my device every minute, it drops from a fully recharged battery to 90% in an hour and a half. I've had my wife's phone and mine side by side to compare - same os version, same radio etc.same settings in location are active (location reporting and location history), same location accuracy, same google play services vrsion, same settings in google+ and google now, same everything! I disabled location reporting for now to see it this will have any affect, but this is absolutely driving me nus. why do I need to go through this ordeal, when another nexus 5 is experiencing great battery life while everything is enabled, it will sleep all the time if screen is off.

To tell you the truth I'm a bit hesitant in trying these kind of solutions, yes maybe they could make a difference, but I am tired of messing around with everything just to get a decent experience. I need to know why do 2 perfectly identical N5's experience such astronomical battery differences. And that means I have no choice but to start comparing the two (my wife's and mine) side by side with a needle..

You can always just tick them again if ever wanted. And just so you know. I don't get any Google play drain now and everything works fine. All your doing is removing the stupid permissions gms core wants but doesn't actually need
My battery right now. (gonna charge it at 1% lol)

Thanks allot for the info, I'll try it if I see my temporary solution isn't working.. Seems that if I turn off "location reporting" the wakelocks go away, now I need to find what's different between my settings and my wife's settings location wise, it's definitely something that "came" with me before I bought the nexus 5, it's some setting I have deep withing google..

There won't be any difference, Google have just f**ked up basically. My missus's phone without being set like those settings absolutely hammers her battery (like yours) , yet mine shows about 6% use over the day. But with the boxes unticked shows none so i do it anyway. Otherwise all settings are the same from what I can tell. It did my head in too trying to sort hers out

I'ts absolutely driving me nuts.. I've been trying to find out what's the problem for more than a month now, unbelievable.. but I still think it has something to do with something I have connected\set\changed with Google somehow.. with my S4 I've reset, completely wiped, changed roms, and the issue was still there, now moving to another phone, still.. so it has to be something to do with my Google account

Do a backup and wipe all and Start a new Google account to test?
My missus changed absolutely nothing, was literally just one day it decided "hey I'm gonna ass rape your battery from now on" and that was it

I'm having similar issues with Google play services preventing my phone from sleeping. I've tried the suggestions in this thread, I've also give through other threads and tried them, but over the last 3 or 4 days when there was an update to Google search, my battery has suffered massively!
I'm not sure what else I can do
I've tried turning off all location settings, I don't use Google now and I've even set Greenify to hibernate most of the Google stuff. I'm constantly seeing the message Google search has been greenified when I switch my display on

Go to settings > location > google location reporting > TURN OFF "location reporting" (leave location history on). charge it over night and check battery usage after a day's use.

Hey,
I have seen that some parts of the Google account could not be properly synced.
Could this be the battery drain hanging out together (as this is also part of Google Play Service)?
At least the error always occurs with the battery drain.
bye Stefan

Everything is possible.. What exactly do you mean by "not properly synced"? My friend is experiencing the same behavior even after disabling location reporting.. Anyway.. This is the Google saga we've all been fighting with for as long as I can remember..

I've also seen Google not syncing properly a couple of times today. Had to manually force it to sync. Might be what's causing the wakelocks. Gonna keep an eye out for it from now on.

Hi.
Does the ASUS Padfone 2 have a notification led?
Can you remove the 'Pad Only' tab in the App Drawer?
Would you recommend the Padfone 2 after using it so far? Im looking to get one or a LG Nexus 4 or an HTC One X+.
Thank You.

Same question
For the Padfone2:
Do games (like World of Goo and Osmos) work on the tab in fullscreen?
Is the sound quality with headphones as good as they advertised it to be?
Does it have any WiFi issues (like does it turn off after the phone has been in sleep mode for a couple of minutes and turns back on when you turn the screen on, like on some Sony phones and Cyanogenmod 9)?
Is the bootloader unlockable?
Thanks.

Hi guys,
- There is no notification LED
- I don't thinik it is possible to remove Pad Only Tab in official launcher.
- I like PadFone 2 a lot this far. There are some minor issues which I will cover in depth once review is finished, but no deal breakers. I cant compare to new Nexus, as I didn't try it, but PadFone 2 looks to be in line and better then One X+.
- Still didn't cover gaming on Pad front, but I will update info once I do.
- Really looking forward to test headphone output. If it is on par with VivoTab, it will be more than good.
- WiFi is coming on in few seconds after waking up, so, no there is no issue there.
- Don't know if bootloader is unlockable, can't confirm that. Early guess is that it will be possible to flash, but due Pad/Phone combination it will be difficult to cook good ROM for it.
You are welcome

Thanks for the responses but I didn't really understand this one. I'll explain what problems I'm having on a Sony device (with and without Cyanogenmod) :
I turn WiFi on (mobile data is off). While the screen is on, everything is normal. When I turn the screen off during the next 10-15 minutes I'm able to receive gtalk/gmail or any other content but after that, nothing is coming in anymore. When I turn the screen on again, suddenly all of the mails and notifications start coming in.
It may sound silly. If you could just turn on wifi, turn off mobile data, let your phone be uninterrupted for about 20-30 minutes and then email yourself from the computer to the email linked to your phone and see if your phone notifies you at once. If not, wait 5-10 minutes and turn the screen on and see if the email comes in at that very moment.
Looking forward to that complete review soon. :good:
OK, didn't understand the issue first time. Will try and get back with more info.

Hey,
I'm currently on Samsung Galaxy S (the first one), and I found a really big need of a tablet. So instead of buying a tablet and a phone separately I'm looking forward to a combination of two, like this one.
I'm more interested in performance, I have seen many tablets so far, even some quad core, but so far they were a bit slow (at least for me).
May you show some performance examples in your review? Like opening many apps and then using the phone/tablet?
Could you post the supernote apk from the Padfone 2, so we can test it on the Padfone 1?
It so cool.!!!!!!

If you are looking for combination of phone and tablet you won't find better. As far as I know, beside Padofone 1, there is no other product on the market. This phablet has a lots of RAM and high speed CPU meaning it delivers some high end perfomance in both phone and tablet mode. On the other hand, if you tried some other high end tablet like Samsung Galaxy 10.1 or Asus Prime, it will feel similar when you are juggling between many apps. Despite manufacturers claims tablets are stil far far away from PC in terms of usability.

Well, it looks like it is normal behavior. WiFi will disconnect when phone goes to deep sleep, ergo you will not be available to receive emails etc... If you want to prevent this, you need to select keep WiFi on during sleep in advanced part of WiFi settings. If this option is enabled, everything works as you would like, instant email notification for example.

Google services uses a lot of battery

Hello
I've been having thoughts about my battery stats on my i9505. I can pretty much go through the day but sometimes a full charge is just not enough. I usually get 1:30 to 2 hours of screen time, and have about 20-30% battery left.
Here's what I'm wondering: why does google services use this much battery?
I'm running stock rom with Chainfire's cf auto root.
Here's some statistics.

I've had this issue in the past. Your going to have to do a factory reset my friend. That should resolve it.
try tunrning off google network location service, sometimes it helps
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda app-developers app
Location services have been on for long and new firmware was flashed, with factory reset not 2 weeks ago... anyway , it's all right, i was just curious if I'm the only one with this...

Your definitely not the only one. The only way I could fix mine was factory reset.

I had the same problem with GE ROM, and after I put Location Services Off and then On again, the problem went away. I have Google now active.
Location service is the culprit. I had same issue on my S4. But I turned it off permanently and now I have nice battery life.
You can keep GPS on but turn off "Use wireless networks" option. Also make sure you have latest Play Store and Google Play Services installed on your phone.
try disabling the samsung push notification thingy... i suddenly started getting horrible battery life, and disabled this little guy yesterday... After 10 hrs of normal usage so far today, i still have 75% juice left

You have google now on and google services doesn't drain most of your battery? That's odd because i disabled and re enabled google now(and location services with it) some times and same battery drain every time ... did you have data and sync constantly on?

So you either using the phone extensively through the day which results to other things using up more battery ... or am i having a problematic phone? Or there is a magic setting that has to be made?
My average screen time is about 2-2,5 hours and that gets me easily 2-2 and half days of battery ... with same usage and google now on that's halved ... i m getting literally half the battery life with google now doing its thing ... without altering anything else on the phone ... just on and off google now ... which i ve been testing for a couple days ...
Yeah I don't see a daily benefit in phone knowing network location until I want a certain app to access my location. Try greenifying Network Location and any other wake lock apps that are NOT widgets or apps that u require notifications from (I greenified Google maps, play store and Google services). You will need greenify donate though (well worth it).
I got my standby battery almost flat instead of steady decline and can get an extra 10-20 hours of standby time.
Download betterybatterystats and find the culprits on your battery drain

That's not really a fix though. That's a workaround. I've gotten it completely fixed by doing a factory reset but I haven't gotten it fixed any other way.

Sorta, in a nutshell. I do believe it's a bad installation of the ROM that's causing the issue. If you're on a custom ROM that requires a gapps package the I would think reflashing the gapps package would do the trick to fix it but I can't promise that.
Don't have 10 posts, but I uploaded a screenshot to imgur, just add /GW1UrDo.
Obviously the issue is google services. What's strange is that it doesn't do this all the time, just once every few weeks...

GPS averting dodgy

Hello..So far loving my nexus 5, but I have noticed that GPS is not it's strongest feature. While driving around town with Google maps navigation it was going all over the place and rerouting every few minutes. So I also started using my gs3 to compare and it was rock solid.
Also I used GPS test app to see how many satellites it was connecting to...it was seeing around 20 to 21 satellites but connecting to only 6 or 7 of them. While gs3 connects to 12 to 15.
Has anybody else tested the GPS? Any way to solve this? I use my phone as my primary navigation device, so I want it to be as reliable as possible.
Please let me know if anybody else was able to get this working.
Thank you

some people just put the gps app on and see what satellites it latches onto , they dont get out there and test it on the move!

Is it a kit kat issue or a hardware issue, thats the thing. need more people to test it on the move.
I've set my location finder to not use GPS and only use data and wifi hot spots, ie "battery saver". It seems to be working correctly.

My money is on software issue.

Thank you

Been having the same problem, I've noticed that disabling 'use wifi and mobile networks' helps improve the situation slightly.

+1 And, it's good for getting better battery life - extending its overall run time.
GPS constantly pinging & reporting/tracking its location is not battery friendly, besides I don't need Google server or intel agencies to get frequent metadata update while I'm going about my daily routine, ya know - it's essentially a mobile device and not LoJack.
But, you might want to use GPS Status from Play Store to help tweak how GPS download & use the data, set mine & it has a quick 5 seconds locking with 3 to 5 satellites indoor, and 17 or 18 signals within 20 seconds or so.
I also have the GPS problem, which makes playing ingress impossible. Setting it to GPS only helps a little bit, but the problem still persists

I've just opened google maps using GPS only and it pinpointed me two houses away from where I am and I'm actually outside the blue range highlighted circle. Anyone else have this happen?

Battery life discussion (at&t thread)

Looking to see what people are getting. Please be descriptive as to what you do to achieve your screenshot.
Here is mine:
Disabled: Greenify, debloat, carrier IQ removed, Google now off
Enabled: Location on high accuracy, 1 Google account and email sync, auto brightness at 55%, mostly WiFi. No airplane mode, no disabling LTE etc.

Running life 360, nova prime, ivona, tasker, android wear, sales force chatter, pushover, notify my android, ifttt, hangouts, used the phone about an hour and a half. Screen brightness at 99%. Also greenify and clean master. I also removed bloat
i have to say im OCD and i dont like to think i have things running that i dont need, so with the help of some posts in xda for carrier IQ and knowledge i have from previous droids and the help of android tuner, i got alot of non used apps removed and using only about 1.2 gb of memory on my lg, to me that is still alot

Impressive.
Is that Clean Master the Anti Virus or cache cleaner?
i wouldnt mind rooting mine, but i bought it retail so i could try out the phone and return it before the return policy ... im that guy. but nonetheless i will probably get it in a little bit with my plan since i am on a business plan. But when not rooted, battery it looks like, compared to those that are, just cannot compare. I am barely squeezing 4 hours of screen time on a charge that will last me all day. I would hope to do a little bit better.
Today i went from 10am and it is now 415pm. i am at 66% with 1 hour and 40 mins screen time ... personally, that's pretty ehhh My nexus 5 with Android L got better than that. sooooo anyone else that IS NOT rooted getting the same results as me or doing a lot better or worse??
That's about what I was getting before I switched to ART. Phone seems to run cooler on ART too.

the cache cleaner, i dont use an av on my phone.
today i went to a client site and i talked on the phone almost all the way there and back,
i have been on battery for 4 hours 4 min, 1 hr talk time, 1 hr screen time, and gps for about 20 minutes and i am still at 83%... i removed all the lg stuff i wont use and only allowed things to run with greenify that i wouldnt use and i still have all network apps (google now, life360, tasker, etc) all working 100%

Rooting it shouldn't effect returning it, just wipe it to stock and remove superuser

The on screen time was 2 hours I think. I played a few games last night for about 30 min before bed at 230am and it was about 42% battery when I went to bed

Yes I do feel it is very hot and I hate the dim that it does...but battery isn't bad
I can confirm that phone runs hot when screes has been on for a while
Not rooted
Running Greenify
Auto-brightness at 60%
Always on: WiFi, BT, push everything
I am considering root to remove some apps and kill CIQ, and perhaps change the resolution all in an effort to get more out of the battery but I am not sure I will squeeze too much more out of it.

Android System and Android OS using 50% of battery life

The battery stats are consistently showing Android System (around 35%) and Android OS (around 15%) totaling just under 50% of battery usage, is anyone else seeing this and/or know how to reduce this?
WIFI and GPS off, location set to just wifi and mobile (with wifi and Bluetooth scanning off), Bluetooth and NFC on, and screen always on turned off.
Welcome to the world of Marshmallow, where battery sucks too, like Lollipop

The screen has been either the third or fourth down on my list. I can't figure out what is causing the drain though as I have any and everything disabled that normally kills the battery. Don't get me wrong though, I'm still getting more usage than with my S6 but it hurts knowing that I could be getting a lot more if the Android System and OS wasn't draining so much.

I have to say I've noticed the same. Are you using a ROM? Also, depending on your phone/ROM there may be a way to turn off ambient sensor. This is the option that marshmallow use to wake the phone when picked up, notified , ect. Its seems disabling this prevents a lot of system use and wakelocks. At least for me it does. Worth a shot.

Just stock Marshmallow on my S7 and I have all of that "smart" stuff disabled, like the smart stay to keep screen on while reading, gestures for various things, etc
I was coming here to try and figure out the same thing. Android OS and Android System are always #1 and #2 on my battery drain. I know I could get a LOT more life out of it if I could figure out why.

I'm thinking of being the guinea pig and sideloading the newest google play services to see if that helps. The one on our phones, or at least mine and my wife's, is old and made for lollipop and older. I'm not sure why we haven't gotten the marshmallow version.
The most recent 8.7.02 but we have 8.4.89.

Ok Ill bite... How does this work without root? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro&hl=en
Seems like this could solve our issues if we kill a bunch of bloat, no?

Looks like:
8.7.02 (2624717-440) February 26, 2016 arm64 + arm Android 6.0+ nodpi
The -440 is the key here. The first 4 means marshmallow, the second 4 means arm64-v8a CPU architecture, and the 0 means universal dpi
I disabled VoLTE today and it seems to have helped. They have currently drained a total of 36% (down from 50%) so far. Android System used 20% (down from 35%) and Android OS using the same 15%.
I can't say for sure this is what caused the drop though because I'm also in an area with 4GLTE whereas every other day I was in an area with only 4G all day. So could having VoLTE enabled while not being connected to a LTE tower cause the Android System to drain the battery?

Any luck?
I had 10% loss in 6 hours sleep freaking amazing sad out of box performance.
The fix for me,
(Settings/ More Connection Settings/ Nearby Device Scanning - Off )
Result was 1% loss in 4 hour sleep.
Anyway hope that helps

Yea but that is only 10% usage of battery. Wait another 8 hours and let us know.
---------- Post added at 12:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:17 PM ----------
Ive disabled like 30 packages and that is about as far as I'm comfortable going without someone else here being able to identify what each of the packages are used for. Will see if this does anything. I'm down 25% already in just about 4 hours with 30 min SOT and 20 min of voice calls.

Yes true another 8 hours would have been ugly.
Disabling device Nearby Scanning seems to had did the trick 4hr 1% loss , Unfortunately I didn't take System Usage screen shot of change made.
As far as disabling packages , that can do more harm then good they work off each other.
Your best bet start from scratch hard boot back to basic disables no 3rd party app installs & go from there
---------- Post added at 01:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:48 PM ----------
Adding
The first few charge cycles are VIP conditioning battery.
I highly recommend disabling fast charge & no wireless charging during that time frame
