[Q] Whats your next phone? - HTC Sensation

Just wanted to see what you current sensation users who are planning on upgrading this year have in mind. I'm thinking about either the s5 or m8, but leaning more towards the s5 for the removable battery, camera, and lighter weight. I haven't had the chance to play wit either one, but those are my thoughts right now. I've been a sense user since forever, but would like to try out touchwiz despite all the bad things i heard about it (heard it may have improved in the s5). Would love to hear peoples thoughts. Thanks

I want M8 but 4mp camera is a deal breaker for me
at first I thought HTC would use 12 mp:laugh: (with ultrapixels )
So I will stay with my XE this year even its volume key is a little bit loose

you are expecting too much from HTC

I upgraded my sensation in February to the One (M7), however I still cannot put my sensation down for a minute... The development is far too good on this device to forget about it...

For me a large screen and good battery life with Acer Liquid S2 ^^
My Sensation cant be drop ^^

I never had an issue with battery life on the sensation. I still use the original battery came with the phone and doesn't matter what rom I use, can squeeze at least 24 hours out of it. However I have to admit I have always drained the battery down to 4-5% and charged it back to 100% without a cut. (That might have helped to optimize the battery?) I experience the same with the One. Excellent battery life, 1.5-2 days with general use and some games. Although if I don't use 3g, it is off. I have no issues with non removable batteries, I think the are made to last. And I do the same with this, drain it till 4-5% and charge it back to 100%.

There's a rumor that there will be the HTC Butterfly S's successor (13mp)
Maybe it'll be my next phone

[Q] Considering the Sensation, on the fence

Hey all,
I’ve been having some issues with the hard drive on my G2 and getting it exchanged through warranty. I’m looking into selling it and picking up a new Sensation on eBay instead. I have a few questions and wanted to get your opinion on the device as I’m a little on the fence. With my G2 I like the stability, screen size and battery life. However I don’t like the thickness, I never use the keyboard and I hate the loose hinge. I like how HTC built the Sensation- it has a larger screen but it is by no means is it a huge phone.
- How is the ‘out-of-box software’ experience? I’m not one to install a different ROM or root and I’m a Mac user with no access to a PC. I liked the G2 ‘almost stock Android’ software and it was very reliable. Do you find it buggy? How bad is the bloatware?
- How is the battery life? This is one of the best features of the G2. It can last a very long day with many tasks. I don’t use a lot of battery-draining activities. I generally check text, email, twitter, Facebook, news and Google Reader throughout the day. Will I get a full day with the Sensation?
Thanks for your advice in advance.
Much poor battery life. With normal usage, it lasts only around half a day. If your criteria is "at least a good battery life", then htc sensation should definitely not be an option for you.

battery life will vary, mine is typically about 2 days with medium usage. Check out craigslist, I picked up mine for $230, unlocked it and rooted before I started using it. Cant go wrong with this phone

You shouldn't speak for all Sensation users.
I've found my battery life excellent, with fair-moderate use it lasts approximately 36 hours for me using CM7 build 4.

He have right man, with normal use the battery lasts around half of day. Mine and to ather 4 mine friend is asame ! And we have all android on it. Windows it keept more of course but default is Android on them and we love it as it is. If u want CM7 on it is your misunderstood desire. But we do not care how you get on your phone with Windows. If I want to take my toy figurines taken from the store of toy figurines, right ?
Thanks for the fast responses. After doing some searching, it looks like a lot of people have picked up the Anker battery eBay and have seen excellent results extending battery life. I think with that I could get through a long day.
Will rooting/s-off and removing bloatware help battery life? Also, do you need to have a Windows PC to root/s-off?
Thanks.
This phone stock is terrible compared to rooted. Almost any custom rom is better than stock, battery and performance wise.
The phones good at stock but fairly sluggish, if your keeping it stock its prob not going to be better than the sg2
Also I think u can root from a mac
The stock software is not terrible! I'm not rooted, got launcher pro on it and its very fast! Sense is pretty nice though but lacks when it comes to customising.
You don't need to root to be able to customise the phone a lot. I picked up an anker battery and I like it. With light use I can get 30+ hours. With normal use like you described, texts calls emails facebook browsing the odd game I can easily make it through the day. With heavy use ie lots of screen time you might have to plug it in before bedtime. Depends how long your day is I suppose!
I don't regret buying this phone at all. It's a beautiful device.
Sent from my brain
I am totally stock but S-OFF. In my opinion, you do not need to root or flash custom rom's to appreciate this device. Out of the box, the sensation is already an amazing phone. I don't understand why other people keep saying that it is slow, maybe they have a faulty handset. For me it is very fast! You can't go wrong with this phone.
Is 'root' and 'S-off' not the same thing?
---------- Post added at 12:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:25 PM ----------
Nevermind after some searching, I learned the difference.
s-off means security off...... you need to s-off the device in order to write data into the nand as i understand it(anyone can corect me if im wrong.) root gives you root access to the device and with it you can remove or freeze the bloat ware on your phone. two entirely different things
back on topic: i love my sensation. i get through the day at work without charging it. my usuage is mainly text (heavy text) but i do check facebook, and read news and the occasional phone call. im rooted also but runnin stock rom with bloat ware removed and it works just fine for me. just like yourpassanger said the stock rom is not terrible at all.
Lol have u tried custom roms? I'm telling you android revolution is a lot smoother than stock. I regretted getting this phone till I rooted it, now I'm glad I've got it

You sound like you have a functional brain in your head that actually uses some common sense.
Good.
The phone as I received it is nice, not perfect .... there's no such thing.
Eeyup, there's some useless app's installed, but for someone else they're probably perfect.
I haven't rooted mine because of the warranty factor.
I'm waiting on an Anker battery.
That should make the experience a little nicer.
Let's face it: The more you use the phone like a pocket computer, the harder the processor works and the more battery power it uses.
Therefore,if you use it like a laptop, you'd better be packing some spare batteries or a Mugen 3500.
Otherwise it's a nicely built little phone, with a great screen and good processing power.

[Q] Is good battery life hit and miss on this phone?

I've been considering getting this phone, and I think I am pretty close to getting it. I was waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S2 release date and price information, and since it is going to be about $230 or higher with a contract, I'm more leaning towards the Sensation.
My main concern with this phone is the battery life. Some people say the battery life is awesome, and some people say that the battery life is pretty bad. Is it just hit and miss? Obviously, since I'm on this forum, I will be rooting and installing custom ROMs on it, and I'm assuming it would help with battery life.
Other than the battery life, this phone seems best for me because of its looks, performance, and size. A 4.52" screen seems like a bit much for me.
I can't wait to get rid of this MT3G.
Thanks!

get an anker or stock evo3d battery and youll be good to go. with juice defender app, moderate usage and my evo3d battery i get 30+ hours everytime. with lighter usage ive hit 40+ hours. hit 48 thi morning. I am however slightly underclocked, and undervolted.
I personally get great battery life on almost every ROM i've used. If you ever notice you run out of battery fast because you're a heavy user then grab a 1900mAh or higher battery that will -definitely- increase your battery life.
I use an Anker and have been blown away.
There is a great article on the xda home page take speaks on secondary batteries. Some can cause potential harm. An issue they've found is that the slight larger size knocks the ground pin loose on the device causing the touch screen to malfunction. There is also a great thread that teaches you how to track down your juicers and eliminate them, thus maximizing battery life on the ARHD thread first post. Check these things out before makeing a decision on how to improve your bat life.
I have now ARHD 3.6.1 with bricked 0.91 kernel and I get 20 hours with WiFi. So it can be done.
Just some of my input

if you can wait until mid October I would suggest you go with the Amaze. It comes with a + 1700 mA battery vs. the 1500 -ish Sensation. Now, it is clocked at 1.5 gh vs 1.2 of the Sensation so I don't know exactly how that impacts the the increased battery size, but it is bigger. Plus the Amaze is better spec'd than the Sensation. If the Amaze has the same size battery as the sensation there are several aftermarket batteries that will increase its life. I use one.

I would say ..Yes, it is hit and miss.
I think some people have dud stock batteries (Those who get 10 hours out of the stock battery then amazingly 18 hours out an Anker battery with slightly more juice in it).. and more commonly some people get dodgy handsets.
The dodgey handsets are the ones that wont get above 10 hours use even when everythings turned off pretty much, and no matter what battery they use (eliminating the possibility of a dud battery).
The problem with randomly getting a dodgy sensation handset with poor battery life is exposed in a review by TechRadar here...
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/htc-sensation-943466/review?artc_pg=9
Quote from above link: "However, what was more impressive (and a relief) was the sleep state of the HTC Sensation. Where before the phone would get very hot and start spewing out battery life in our pocket for no reason, if you leave the phone locked up for around 10-15 minutes on our new model the power consumption dropped to almost nothing."

Just got our htc amaze in, its 1730maH, same size as stock EVO 3D battery, same part number, except battery contacts are on the left side on the amaze, and on the right ont he evo 3d, which is why sensation users have to flip it. The htc amaze uses the same chipset as the htc sensation (s3) processor type, and the sensations is rated at 1.5ghz, but downclocked to 1.2 due to 1500mah battery... Only difference REALLY between the two is sensation has 768ram amaze has 1gb, htc sensation has vga ffc, amaze has 2mp. and for the ffc you can totally see the difference. stand in front of a sign, and you'll easily see whats better. but the amaze.. psh.. that thing is way heavier and the screen rises out of the unibody. sensation is sexier.
Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get the Sensation. I'm just going to wait until the SGSII comes out, so I can see both the Sensation and SGSII in person at a T-Mobile store.
Regarding battery life, I saw this thread, saying that HTC was upgrading the battery in the Sensation. Is this true? And if so, if I went and bought a Sensation from T-Mobile, would it have the newer battery?

Purchasing a Sensation?

Hi, I'm planning on purchasing an HTC Sensation now that I've gotten rid of my iPhone 4.
I do have some issues regarding the purchase. I've seen threads commenting on dust collecting under screen and a poor battery life. Are these issues common on the phone? And if they are, is it possible to clean out the screen when the issue occurs? I've heard about a 1900mAh battery so I guess that's a better fix for the battery.
I'm on a T-Mobile family plan with no data plan. If I purchase an unlocked Sensation, will T-Mobile automatically add a data plan to my line? This happened to me when I used my iPhone 4 I got as a present on my AT&T line.
Thanks!
Not had my phone for all that long so I can't comment on the dust under the screen issue yet. But for battery life there are a few things that can be done, if you root your phone you can get SetCPU and underclock your phone when it's screen is off to extend the battery life or get Juice Defender, which disables wifi and data when the screen is off but turns them back on every 15 minutes to allow it to sync and will then turn them off again to save battery.
But even without a rooted phone, although the battery life certainly isn't good it will just about get you through a long day. But obviously you can also get a 19000mAh battery or even a further extended one as well as an external battery that can charge your phone up providing you don't mind carrying one around.
Also, can the Sensation play flash videos natively? I've heard some mixed claims regarding that.
I have had the Sensation for quite some time now and I don't have one spec of dust under my screen. And battery life is good. It last me through the day but I bought the Anker 1900mAh battery because it is so cheap and so amazing lol.
I would recommend the Sensation to anyone.
Anker 10,000 maH battery......
I purchased the Anker 10,000 maH battery. I had to...... I use my phone all day long. So I really don't turn on my main computer everyday. Especially since I installed a terminal emulator on my Sense. Now I can correct code, and scripts on the fly. I can re-charge my phone 5 times with this brick. Fits in my shirt pocket, and it takes an hour from 10% battery to 100%. Not bad.....

Dust under the screen is a common issue, but it's only a lot more common than it should be - the number of Sensations affected is still a very low amount. The safest way to take care of it is to go through T-Mo or HTC and they'll clean it out. Trying to do it yourself will definitely void the warranty cause you'll have to dismantle the phone.
Battery can be terrible, but a chichitec, anker, or mugen 1900mAh battery along with a good rom/kernel/clockspeed combo fixes that. I'm on Android HD 3.x gingerbread with the stock kernel, clocked at 1.5Ghz when the screen is on, 768Mhz when it's off, heavy user and I can make it through the day. The other thing to consider is how you use the phone. The Super-LCD looks crazy crisp, and it is, sunlight visibility is great and color reproduction is nice - although it's no SAMOLED. Here's the problem though, it's a mega power drainer. If you listen to a lot of music on your phone or maybe stream Pandora comedy, you shouldn't have any issues. If you're an all-day facebooker or constantly texting/emailing, that screen will destroy your battery and I couldn't recommend the phone, as much as I love it Don't get me wrong, you could do it, but you'll probably need a spare battery or a charger with you.
With the 1900mAh battery, I can have the screen on constantly and texting/emailing/browsing for about 3 hours straight. If I keep the screen on and play games, 2 and a half hours. Not much difference even though one is a lot more intensive than the other. The S-LCD panel is a huge battery drain.
I haven't had any problems with dust under the screen.
Battery life great for the amount of time i use the phone everyday (screenshot attached).
If you're up for it i'd suggest you flash a custom ROM to use the full potential of the phone. Personally i like Android Revolution HD, but it's all down to personal preference. Try a few different ones and use what you like the most.
Hi guys!
First things first:
Happy New Year to everyone!
I'm thinking of an upgrade (from HTC Vision & iPhone 4S) and looking at Sensation as an option and I've got a few questions regarding that.
My main concern is it not to late to jump to a Sensation? are there good developers still around? I remember RMK jumped from G2 to sensation, and he's still here, how about others? Any rumors or plans to abandon Sensation? I'd imagine alot of them getting the new GN, I can't really be bothered, rather have an option between Sense and AOSP.
My other question would be is the hardware acceleration fully functional on current ICS roms?

Despite having GNexus I would recommend the HTC Sensation. Had it before gnex and it's very good phone. Had two small issues :
1) battery under heavy use drain fast - bigger battery recommended.
2) random ringtone/notification change (this could be related to 2.08.401.1 ROM, which isn't officially released, but is a test ROM).
Other than this is VERY good device and won't let you down.

Disappointing? Nothing . Only issue I had, was the "volume ghost", but after flashing 4.0.2 all OK. It's different device and as I was hard addict to Sense, I'm surprised how quickly get used to GNex. Love it
i have no dust on my screen yet. i buy it 3 month ago.
ps:i come from China.hah
The dust problem is annoying, but it's no problem to get a new phone when the first one has dust under the screen. The Akku is okey for one day full use, when you load it every night. When you need better akku there are good ones with 1900mAh, on Amazon Germany for example the one by Anker.
Thanks for the input everybody!
Regarding the data plan. I currently have a family plan with no data. When I purchase my Sensation on ebay or any other auction site, and then use my T-Mobile sim, will I automatically be added a data plan?

[Q] Fairly good Android device

I'd like to get a new Android device. I've been using mostly HTCs: Dream, Hero, Desire and now Sensation XE.
I'm actually dissatisfied because of poor battery life in smartphones.
I've tried a number of different modded ROMs. At the best I've been able to run about 24 hours.
I'd like to get a longer battery life under "normal use".
My average normal use is:
1. GPS on to have geo-tagging in photos.
2. 10 phone calls a day for less than 20 minutes cumulative.
3. 5 SMSs
4. Data always ON to sync with 1 GMail account
5. Less then 5 emails from the phone (I have a PC for that)
6. Screen goes of in 30 secs of inactivity
7. Fairly good 3G/2G coverage
8. WiFi is on 2-4 hours a day
9. Internet browsing for 10-15 minutes a day
10. FM radio for 10-15 minutes a day (yeas, I listen to FM radio)
I'm not looking for very large screens or fancy handsets.
I'd like to have a smartphone that will last 48 hours (or even more if possible).
Any advise for a device+ROM matching my needs?
TIA.
If u don't want to use an extra batery, Motorola RAZR MAXX might be a good choice (it has a 3300mAh battery, may be differed in different regions)(seems it is still having GB)
Or a Note II (3100mAh, I'm not sure)

Nope.
There's no GPS, no WiFi and no FM radio. And no Android!
And I fear the huge battery is because of the hardware (nVidia GPU?).

It looks it's not on the market yet. And, I fear the large battery is to feed the large screen.
More in general, in my opinion, larger batteries don't imply longer battery lives.
What I'm hoping is to find a phone+ROM match that will allow for a longer battery life.
Thanks anyway for the try.
Actually, Motorola RAZR MAXX is in the few devices of android that can run more than a day under normal use (It has Android in it of course, according to my info)
IF you want something that can last for longer hours and wont consume much battery in the screen
I suggest u to use some phones that have a small screen, and use some extra batteries

Undervolt as much as you can to save battery: This is not true. Undervolting to a certain point can help you extend your battery life, but doing it too much will drain more battery instead of extending it. Also it makes the phone less stable, so make sure you know what you're doing and don't undervolt like crazy

Actually, Motorola RAZR MAXX is in the few devices of android that can run more than a day under normal use (It has Android in it of course, according to my info)

I was considering this device, while yours seems to be different.
Of course the one you're talking about makes some (a lot actually) sense to me.

So, apart of the Droid RAZR MAXX, which one are you suggesting?
(I did know all of those "legends").
HTC Sensation!! I love it!
Sent from a awesome Sensation with TouchCream 2.1
HTC One S with Viper. Got 4 hour screen time with a total of 21 hours. You'd be more than set.
Sent from my HTC One S running ViperOneS!

What kind of usage? How long would the battery last?

Umm...actually any phones with an screen about 3.5 inch (but less than 4.0 inch) and can use extra batteries are ok for u (I think)
There is actually a wide range of choice!:good:
I have a play store nexus... I never really drop below 45% by the end of the day, and I use my phone quite a bit in the downtime at work.
Plus... its a nexus
People get the wrong idea about the battery on the nexus because the LTE (sprint/verizon) versions suck... LTE kills battery life on any phone (or conversely, if the same phone was on a GSM HSPDA+ network, it would get drastically better battery life).

Brand+model, please!
Samsung galaxy Ace (S5830i) and some extra batteries (one or two if needed) might be a good choice (It runs out of battery slower)
though u won't have stock ICS running and the storage & RAM is small . THe screen quality won't be as good as you think
OR,
THE RAZR MAXX (with a 3300mAh battery & touch screen, of course) . However the battery can't be changed and you might not be able to use it for 48 hours continuously .
Just my suggestions

roms and kernels?

anyone know why there are no roms or kernels for this phone? wonder if it's because of a locked bootleader? that and the fact that the battery life sux balls i think i might return this. i love the camera and the feel of it but it's still rather laggy even after the newest update
thanks all
No roms and kernels because no custom recovery.
No custom recovery because locked bootloader.
Not sure why you're getting poor battery performance.
Battery life is brilliant for me, I can go a whole day of normal use (my normal use is probably heavy use to most people) and still have 40% when I go to bed .
What kind of apps are you using to get such lag and battery drain?
Yea, i see everyone complaining about the battery life but i have had no issues with battery life or drainage.
that was with just the basics installed. 100 percent when i start the day around 8:30 the used it to stream pandora for an hour on the way to work. then it sat in my pocked unused and the battery was at 15 percent by 1.
this is even with my battery saver proggie running that cuts of the wifi and cell antenna's when screen is off. no idea im assuming the battery is defective. but now that i know there's not gonna be roms and such i think i might just say fark it and get the m9. i see that there are already tons of roms for that. and i came from a og 3vo so i recognize all the developers.
it's just a bummer i love the curve and the camera on this thing. this is also my third gflex 2 since i got it 3 days ago. the first one just started bootlooping after fifteen mins, the second did the same and now the third seems to work good but the battery life is horrible.
tis a predicament rofl.
thanks for the info gang
j
If that's the case then you might be right about a defective battery.
Either that or the screen is coming on in your pocket, you'd probably notice your skin burning as the phone heats up though.
Have you checked Settings> Battery> Battery Usage, just to see what's using the most battery?
If you're not happy with the flex 2, the m9 is a great phone.
I got my hands on a prototype about 6 months before release, the only reason I didn't get one is that it just didn't feel right in my hand.
Battery life compare to my old Flex 1 is crap. I know its smaller and better screen resolution, but still my old G2 had better battery life than Flex 2 with same screen resolution and battery.
OP should go cr8 it
