Definitive Battery Thread

Hello everyone!
I've spent the past week doing as much research as possible into what type of battery to buy for my G2 and i've come across alot of information to say the least. Alot of opinions, alot of useless data, and some useful data. I just wanted to summarize this info for everyone. And add any new information that people post in the thread below, including battery life data.
Popular Batteries:
- The Mugen 1800mAh - $45 (1400mAh in testing)
- The Senido 1750mAh - $50 (1400mAh in testing)
- The HTC 1500mAh 35H00123-11M (-00M).. Also known as the TP2/EVO battery - $7 (1500mAh in testing)
- The CHICHITEC 1800mAh - $20/each or $40 for 2 + Charger (untested)
Research:
- Mugen and Seido seem to have EXTREMELY inconsistent mAh ratings, HTC seems to be the most consistent.
- On the other hand, trying to compare these battery assuming constant maximum power draw is a little unfair.
The one thing that seems constant is that HTC's battery's perform as expected in every environment and over time, whereas the third partys seem to be able to pull values closer (somewhat) to what they advertise under certain conditions. Not to mention that we have no knowledge regarding the long-term affects of the 'tuning' that these third party companies have done.
We gotta realize that most battery's are using the same cell or the same knock-off cell, and we can't really expect to much of an increase in mAh in this battery form-factor.
Installation Issues:
A lot of these battery's will need to be modified to fit our phones in one way or another as they're meant for the EVO 4G/Incredible/TP2/MyTouch3gSlide/CDMAHero.. Even the ones that are labeled as "G2 Compatible" might not be as a lot of the 'higher capacity' cells have identical dimensions.
Removing the Wrapper around the battery might assist with door bulge
If you feel like you have to aggressively 'wedge' the battery in then you might want to remove/modify the little nub's at the bottom of the battery near the contacts using nail clippers/dremel/knife. Otherwise you run the risk of damaging the cell-side charging contacts.
Some of the hardcore guys in here have sanded down the battery to have a good fit
The 'fit' differs from phone to phone depending both on the dimensions of each specific battery (not the actual brand or company, but each individual battery seems to be a little bit different) and the G2 Door.
If you leave the door bulging indefinitely it might damage the door in some way, it's recommended that you remove the door and just use a case if it's a major problem for you.
Tips:
- After installing the new battery, remember to reset the battery calibration through your recovery. This affects how many times you feel the need to "cycle it through" before achieving optimal battery life.
- Don't believe the temperature sensor on 3rd Party batteries
- Individual "Before and After" stories are cool, but not that useful considering all the variables involved with the hardware, the radio & signal, the software, and the human being (placebo affect). Aggregating all the data together does give us some picture of whats going on.
- The best tell for battery quality is the weight of the battery compared to your stock one, although this is not a guaranteed method.
Conclusion
After reading through as many threads as I could find regarding this topic, It seems that the CHICHITEC batteries have come to be the most popular across all these HTC phones. While the 1500mAh HTC EVO battery seems like the best deal with the most consistent power output.
The average perceived benefit using these batteries seems to be between 30-20%.

For CHICHITEC 1800mAh battery, is it safe to shave off the piece allowing the battery to be a perfect fit? Such as trying to use a nail clipper and clip it off.

All I wanted to do was add my experience. I went out on a limb and bought the 2000mAh batteries from Galilio.
I took the wrapper off and trimmed the tabs and have been using them for about 3 months now.
My battery door does have a slight bulge to it but I can live with it.
The other day I decided to go back to my factory battery because I now have a charger by my bed, one in my truck and one at work. I have to say, I am spoiled now. My G2 is loaded up and running like crazy and my factory battery lasted like 2 hours where my Galilio battery goes for about 9 to 10 hours.
I text ALOT and facebook runs all day, I use the navigation on a daily basis and play tons of games.
Hope my 2 cents helped.

sweet i am still breaking the battery in hopefully its good as urs, btw what rom are you running?

I'm thinking about getting Mugen 1800mAH, but people are having mixed results. Maybe one day we'll get HTC made OEM battery.

CM 6.1.1 I absolutely love it. Tried the CM 7 but don't like it yet.

im on 10 hours of uncharge, so far its been light use, uncluding 1 hour and 30 min of GPS some texting, surfing and HTC updates

Thanks for compiling this info. I've had greatly improved life with the 1800mAh Mugen, but wasn't aware of the inconsistency some people are seeing.

Please run the same tests on the stock HTC 1300 mAh battery for reference.

[Q] Considering the Sensation, on the fence

Hey all,
I’ve been having some issues with the hard drive on my G2 and getting it exchanged through warranty. I’m looking into selling it and picking up a new Sensation on eBay instead. I have a few questions and wanted to get your opinion on the device as I’m a little on the fence. With my G2 I like the stability, screen size and battery life. However I don’t like the thickness, I never use the keyboard and I hate the loose hinge. I like how HTC built the Sensation- it has a larger screen but it is by no means is it a huge phone.
- How is the ‘out-of-box software’ experience? I’m not one to install a different ROM or root and I’m a Mac user with no access to a PC. I liked the G2 ‘almost stock Android’ software and it was very reliable. Do you find it buggy? How bad is the bloatware?
- How is the battery life? This is one of the best features of the G2. It can last a very long day with many tasks. I don’t use a lot of battery-draining activities. I generally check text, email, twitter, Facebook, news and Google Reader throughout the day. Will I get a full day with the Sensation?

Much poor battery life. With normal usage, it lasts only around half a day. If your criteria is "at least a good battery life", then htc sensation should definitely not be an option for you.

battery life will vary, mine is typically about 2 days with medium usage. Check out craigslist, I picked up mine for $230, unlocked it and rooted before I started using it. Cant go wrong with this phone

You shouldn't speak for all Sensation users.
I've found my battery life excellent, with fair-moderate use it lasts approximately 36 hours for me using CM7 build 4.

He have right man, with normal use the battery lasts around half of day. Mine and to ather 4 mine friend is asame ! And we have all android on it. Windows it keept more of course but default is Android on them and we love it as it is. If u want CM7 on it is your misunderstood desire. But we do not care how you get on your phone with Windows. If I want to take my toy figurines taken from the store of toy figurines, right ?

Thanks for the fast responses. After doing some searching, it looks like a lot of people have picked up the Anker battery eBay and have seen excellent results extending battery life. I think with that I could get through a long day.
Will rooting/s-off and removing bloatware help battery life? Also, do you need to have a Windows PC to root/s-off?

This phone stock is terrible compared to rooted. Almost any custom rom is better than stock, battery and performance wise.
The phones good at stock but fairly sluggish, if your keeping it stock its prob not going to be better than the sg2
Also I think u can root from a mac

The stock software is not terrible! I'm not rooted, got launcher pro on it and its very fast! Sense is pretty nice though but lacks when it comes to customising.
You don't need to root to be able to customise the phone a lot. I picked up an anker battery and I like it. With light use I can get 30+ hours. With normal use like you described, texts calls emails facebook browsing the odd game I can easily make it through the day. With heavy use ie lots of screen time you might have to plug it in before bedtime. Depends how long your day is I suppose!
I don't regret buying this phone at all. It's a beautiful device.

I am totally stock but S-OFF. In my opinion, you do not need to root or flash custom rom's to appreciate this device. Out of the box, the sensation is already an amazing phone. I don't understand why other people keep saying that it is slow, maybe they have a faulty handset. For me it is very fast! You can't go wrong with this phone.

Is 'root' and 'S-off' not the same thing?

Nevermind after some searching, I learned the difference.

s-off means security off...... you need to s-off the device in order to write data into the nand as i understand it(anyone can corect me if im wrong.) root gives you root access to the device and with it you can remove or freeze the bloat ware on your phone. two entirely different things
back on topic: i love my sensation. i get through the day at work without charging it. my usuage is mainly text (heavy text) but i do check facebook, and read news and the occasional phone call. im rooted also but runnin stock rom with bloat ware removed and it works just fine for me. just like yourpassanger said the stock rom is not terrible at all.

Lol have u tried custom roms? I'm telling you android revolution is a lot smoother than stock. I regretted getting this phone till I rooted it, now I'm glad I've got it

You sound like you have a functional brain in your head that actually uses some common sense.

The phone as I received it is nice,not perfect .... there's no such thing.
Eeyup,there's some useless app's installed,but for someone else they're probably perfect.
I haven't rooted mine because of the warranty factor.
I'm waiting on an Anker battery.
That should make the experience a little nicer.
Let's face it: The more you use the phone like a pocket computer,the harder the processor works and the more battery power it uses.
Therefore,if you use it like a laptop,you'd better be packing some spare batteries or a Mugen 3500.
Otherwise it's a nicely built little phone,with a great screen and good processing power.

Purchasing a Sensation?

Hi, I'm planning on purchasing an HTC Sensation now that I've gotten rid of my iPhone 4.
I do have some issues regarding the purchase. I've seen threads commenting on dust collecting under screen and a poor battery life. Are these issues common on the phone? And if they are, is it possible to clean out the screen when the issue occurs? I've heard about a 1900mAh battery so I guess that's a better fix for the battery.
I'm on a T-Mobile family plan with no data plan. If I purchase an unlocked Sensation, will T-Mobile automatically add a data plan to my line? This happened to me when I used my iPhone 4 I got as a present on my AT&T line.

Not had my phone for all that long so I can't comment on the dust under the screen issue yet. But for battery life there are a few things that can be done, if you root your phone you can get SetCPU and underclock your phone when it's screen is off to extend the battery life or get Juice Defender, which disables wifi and data when the screen is off but turns them back on every 15 minutes to allow it to sync and will then turn them off again to save battery.
But even without a rooted phone, although the battery life certainly isn't good it will just about get you through a long day. But obviously you can also get a 19000mAh battery or even a further extended one as well as an external battery that can charge your phone up providing you don't mind carrying one around.

Also, can the Sensation play flash videos natively? I've heard some mixed claims regarding that.

I have had the Sensation for quite some time now and I don't have one spec of dust under my screen. And battery life is good. It last me through the day but I bought the Anker 1900mAh battery because it is so cheap and so amazing lol.
I would recommend the Sensation to anyone.

I purchased the Anker 10,000 maH battery. I had to...... I use my phone all day long. So I really don't turn on my main computer everyday. Especially since I installed a terminal emulator on my Sense. Now I can correct code, and scripts on the fly. I can re-charge my phone 5 times with this brick. Fits in my shirt pocket, and it takes an hour from 10% battery to 100%. Not bad.....

Dust under the screen is a common issue, but it's only a lot more common than it should be - the number of Sensations affected is still a very low amount. The safest way to take care of it is to go through T-Mo or HTC and they'll clean it out. Trying to do it yourself will definitely void the warranty cause you'll have to dismantle the phone.
Battery can be terrible, but a chichitec, anker, or mugen 1900mAh battery along with a good rom/kernel/clockspeed combo fixes that. I'm on Android HD 3.x gingerbread with the stock kernel, clocked at 1.5Ghz when the screen is on, 768Mhz when it's off, heavy user and I can make it through the day. The other thing to consider is how you use the phone. The Super-LCD looks crazy crisp, and it is, sunlight visibility is great and color reproduction is nice - although it's no SAMOLED. Here's the problem though, it's a mega power drainer. If you listen to a lot of music on your phone or maybe stream Pandora comedy, you shouldn't have any issues. If you're an all-day facebooker or constantly texting/emailing, that screen will destroy your battery and I couldn't recommend the phone, as much as I love it Don't get me wrong, you could do it, but you'll probably need a spare battery or a charger with you.
With the 1900mAh battery, I can have the screen on constantly and texting/emailing/browsing for about 3 hours straight. If I keep the screen on and play games, 2 and a half hours. Not much difference even though one is a lot more intensive than the other. The S-LCD panel is a huge battery drain.

I haven't had any problems with dust under the screen.
Battery life great for the amount of time i use the phone everyday (screenshot attached).
If you're up for it i'd suggest you flash a custom ROM to use the full potential of the phone. Personally i like Android Revolution HD, but it's all down to personal preference. Try a few different ones and use what you like the most.

I'm thinking of an upgrade (from HTC Vision & iPhone 4S) and looking at Sensation as an option and I've got a few questions regarding that.
My main concern is it not to late to jump to a Sensation? are there good developers still around? I remember RMK jumped from G2 to sensation, and he's still here, how about others? Any rumors or plans to abandon Sensation? I'd imagine alot of them getting the new GN, I can't really be bothered, rather have an option between Sense and AOSP.
My other question would be is the hardware acceleration fully functional on current ICS roms?

I'm running RVHD 5.02 and its still running at 1.2 GHz.. I haven't figured out why. I'm running super tuner, and setcpu. It's running quick, but not at the advertised speed.

It's "there" but it doesn't run very well. Barely feels like its on. Just wait a month or two, and stable ICS will be released.

Despite having GNexus I would recommend the HTC Sensation. Had it before gnex and it's very good phone. Had two small issues :
1) battery under heavy use drain fast - bigger battery recommended.
2) random ringtone/notification change (this could be related to 2.08.401.1 ROM, which isn't officially released, but is a test ROM).
Other than this is VERY good device and won't let you down.

Disappointing? Nothing . Only issue I had, was the "volume ghost", but after flashing 4.0.2 all OK. It's different device and as I was hard addict to Sense, I'm surprised how quickly get used to GNex. Love it

i have no dust on my screen yet. i buy it 3 month ago.
ps:i come from China.hah

The dust problem is annoying, but it's no problem to get a new phone when the first one has dust under the screen. The Akku is okey for one day full use, when you load it every night. When you need better akku there are good ones with 1900mAh, on Amazon Germany for example the one by Anker.

Regarding the data plan. I currently have a family plan with no data. When I purchase my Sensation on ebay or any other auction site, and then use my T-Mobile sim, will I automatically be added a data plan?

An extended battery not requiring a bigger back cover that actually works?

Spent some time searching and reading the relevant threads on G2x, and the final consensus seems to me that there is no widespread agreement with respect to the question I've posed in the thread title. It seems to me that the only extended batteries that are guaranteed to give more than just a 30-60min boost are the 3000mah+ batteries that require using a much larger back cover that turns the G2x into a G2XL.
Hoping there's someone who can prove me wrong. I'm about to buy the G2x for its fantastic specs and low price for use on T-Mobile's prepaid monthly plan. Andida extended battery gets mixed reviews. Same for Prodicell batteries. The one battery for which I'd like to see some results is the "Seidio Innocell 1750mAh Slim Extended Battery for use with LG Thrill 4G, Optimus 3D, LG G2X and Optimus 2X" listed on Amazon.com. (Couldn't post link due to my low post number).
Any thoughts thus far? Will I need to turn my G2x smartphone into a giantphone to get noticeable increases in battery life?

I read about the so-called "gold" batteries. I'm reserving final judgment but remaining skeptical until we can get some extensive tests showing they're worth replacing the stock.

As they say in the automotive world, "There's no replacement for displacement"..
Basically, yeah, if you want a noticeable increase in battery life, then you will need to accept a noticeable increase in battery size. No way around it.
I have seen people spend $50 or more on 'name brand' extended batteries that are the same size as stock, and they rarely give any more battery life than a brand new stock battery.
Think about it - with the phone market as competitive as it is, if there were a battery that offered significant increases in battery life without an increase in size, do you think the major manufacturers would ignore that and allow some Chinese knock-off company to capitalize on it? Not a chance.

You're probably right.
Back in the day (remember when cellphones were, well, just cellphones?) it was just Sanyo and Panasonic and a few other Japanese companies dominating the lithium-ion battery market. Now even Samsung's caught up to them in terms of market share and they've been working overtime to get as much battery life as possible out of their phones. And they have to--check out the competition lately!
Bah. I guess I'm pretty much left to working on every single possible software fix to up my battery life. I'll be reading up on the ROM guides. I hear CM7 is a good rom.

I know you said you didn't want to buy a bigger battery, but assuming you cave in, I can tell you first hand that these batteries actually do last MUCH longer. I can go a full 12 - 16 hours HEAVY usage with "4G". The door itself feels kinda cheap but it's lasted me a good 10 months so far.

Yeah, I've been looking at those. There's also a 3900mah battery available. But the 4500mah pushes it way too far!

i know that a case would make it even thicker... but do they have tpu cases or some type of cover that protects the corners?

I have been looking for something similar, a case for my extended 3500 mAh battery. The back IS larger, of course, the battery appears to be slightly more that double the depth of the stock battery. However, that being said, the design could be worse. I saw another extended battery that was the same size with a god awful protruding rectangle that made the phone look completely off balance. For OP I use the Andida 1980mah and it works great. It tests at 1980mah and gives me significant life over stock.

I'm personally hesitant to commit to that battery. I went ahead and got a 3500mah battery. So far, the performance is quite good. It's allowed me to experiment with other rom/kernel packages that aren't as battery-friendly as tsugi, but offer tons of tweaks.

With stock battery and medium-heavy usage I can get 18 hours on EB and Trinity.... I would think I could easily get into the range of 12-16 with Heavy, but you probably mean EXTREMELY heavy usage.
Also, many people said the Andida battery gave them a few hours extra, thought of trying it but when I look at the ebay page for it the packaging looks extremely cheap... Which leads me to believe the battery is probably also very cheaply made and could easily fry your phone.

I've also had good luck with this battery, definitely better than stock. I haven't tested it scientifically, this is purely an anecdotal opinion based on using both for a long time.

i've been using the 3500 mah battery for around 6 months, no problem.
the original 1500 mah battery is bull****, it only supports your phone for like 12 hours max, you have to keep looking at the battery level if you dont want your phone endup dead.
with the extended battery i can go all day long, in heavy 3g mode. yes its bulky, but you will get what you're looking for. luckily i got it with a pair of desktop charger that i put in my office and home desk, so i never miss any recharge.
i dont think 1980 battery will improve a lot, on paper it suppose to add another 2-3 hours of battery time. but compare it with the 3500, and you will have 150% plus on your battery life.
i got it for $9 in spider-foot dot com

thanks, I've been on the fence between ordering the 2x chichitecs or the 2x 1800 hyperions... think I might go with the chihitecs now. I've read in reviews that the included charger sucks though, doesn't always work... hows your experience with it?

Maybe on the stock ROM the battery is that bad, but no ROM here gives that bad battery
And not only does that 3500 mAh battery give you 150% more battery, it makes your phone look like a retarded bloated whale and a viable floatation device, What a steal!

I can confirm that on the stock, my phone lasts 12h on average. I'm using EB with ELP Trinity.
Keep in mind that how much a phone lasts you is a very subjective statistic. You can use a phone much less/more than someone else, and thus the battery life would be longer/shorter. The appearance of the extended 3500mAh batteries is also subjective.
If we're going to be objective here:
The stock battery lasts about 4-6h of active usage (having the screen on, with a data connection, and running applications that actually make use of the CPU). How many hours of light usage/stand-by someone might have in between those 4-6h of usage varies from person to person. (i.e. someone might use their phone heavily for an hour, then have 5h of really light usage/stand-by, then another hour of heavy usage, and so on until a cumulative 4-6h of active usage has been accumulated)
The extended 3500mAh battery, while doubling the thickness of your phone also increases your battery life 150%-200%.
The reviews for extended batteries that are the same size as stock aren't at all consistent. They vary from people saying they perform worse, to people saying they give a much longer battery life. The only battery that has mostly positive reviews is the Anker 1550mAh, which has been told to run cooler and last a bit longer. Of course having only a 50mAh advantage over the stock, the increase in life shouldn't be expected to be too substantial.

That's gotta be the ELP voltages being too low for you and thus causing higher battery drain, try the T15 and undervolt till you find your voltage sweet spot, you will get way better battery than that.
I use my phone pretty heavily through the day, Music, Games, text, web, calls, etc... and I'm getting much higher than 12 hours.

If you are willing to take a risk, it could pay off or it could not. If you aren't able to get the Anker battery and don't want to take a risk, I would say go with the stock battery.

You won't risk anything with the XE battery. I had misread that and thought you were going to buy the 1520mAh stock one instead of the XE.

No no.I have an normal Sensation with 1520mAh stock battery and i want to change his battery with 1730mAh battery from Sensation XE.But i want to know if deserve the change.

I bought my replacement battery from dx.com and seemingly hit a lucky strike: it's supposed to be 1700mah, yet measures over 2000 in Android Tuner. Cheap, free shipping, pretty much ideal except for the ~3 week shipping time. Doesn't get especially warm, works perfectly, and capacity has only gone up in he couple of months that I've had it.

Hi.This results is after a low using of phone (5-7 min of facebook,few calls/sms and 5 min of gaming).Can see in the photo.I have perfect deep sleep but when i use phone battery drain a lot.Especially in games(5-10 min of gaming = 20-30% ).I have these settings:vipers rom v1.6.3 + faux kernel with intellidemand max cpu 1188,min 192,max screen off 486 and UV -50.

I really don't know - I'd guess an original replacement has somewhat better quality, but I'm not really finding anything wrong with this battery. The only niggle I have is that remaining battery capacity changes on reboots - it might say I have 30% left before rebooting, and then 40% after (I just made those numbers up, but they're pretty representative). It always goes up, though, so I never have less battery remaining than what I'm seeing. I'm guessing this might have something to do with the battery not reporting its actual capacity to the phone (from reading other threads, only original HTC batteries seem to do this), which maybe means the system has to calculate remaining capacity from other factors(?). Still, it doesn't really affect anything.
I've attached a few screenshots I just took, showing some stats and my current usage (as you can see, the phone has been pretty much constantly in use today, mainly web browsing, but some text editing and other stuff too. Always multitasking, several tabs in the browser, and so on. Wifi on all the time, auto brightness, syncing 2 google accounts.). It's currently running at 1728MHz, Badass @performance (918/1188/1728MHz), with [email protected] 320MHz 3D, 266MHz 2D.

Compared to my results,your is much better and now i`m sure will buy a repleacemant.I have the same "problem" with battery capacity on reboots and now i have original stock 1520mAh htc battery.So how you say,this not a problem.I search and i found original htc xe battery at 18$ with fast courier delivery.What you suggest,i must buy an original htc or this peisen battery?And thank you very much for very good explanation.

Yeah, I had the same problem - after a year and a few months my battery never lasted a workday even with light use, gaming could drain 30-40% in a matter of minutes, and it got ridiculously hot. I also got random reboots all the time. I concluded that the cheapest fix to try would be a replacement battery, and this solved all my problems
If you can get the stock XE battery at $18 including shipping I'd say that's a bargain, and you should probably go for it. Still, the Pisen battery is ridiculously cheap (and shipping from DX is free, if slow). If you can afford it, i'd buy both, try them out, and keep the least good one as a spare. Never know when you need one
