EDIT: 03/210/11 Well tried 9.8 and 9.9.5 Base Roms......As unmodded ROMS, first of all the are quite buggy on my Captivate.
HOWEVER, I found the Apex ROM by watsaa and GPS on my phone is FIRE HOT!! ESPECIALLY IN AUTO CONFIG! Had to wear oven mitts to old my phone!!
Here is watsaa's ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952588
Here are my most recent observations on the GPS, for anyone with headaches still. I have run Navigon 3.5.3 for 45 days with absolutely no problem...I decided to try a proper navigation program over Google Maps type stuff.
The point of this thread: In LbsTestMode for SUPL settings choosing "Auto Config" gives stunning GPS performance as I have with Navigon. There is no need to use any customization, and I have not used any kind of GPS fixes. I do not remember which base rom began including the "Auto Config"
Regions Tested: All over New York City; Connecticut
Phone: Captivate (ATT)
ROM: Built using Romkitchen.org/(Captivate version only tested).
Base ROM: XWJS5 9.6
CSC: XEU
Modem: Telus TLJL3 - In my opinion this is critical and this has been the best in my hands---- see here for modem thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869628
Kernel: Speedmod kernel....works great with glitterballs also, but I am not big on over clocking etc.
1. In LBSTestMode "Application Settings": Operation Mode is standalone; Start Mode is hot start and everything else is DEFAULT.
2. In Supl Settings...just choose "Auto Config"
3. Return back to main menu and delete GPS data.
4. Then run test.
5. As long as I keep the Telus modem, this stuff works every time.
Google Maps also works fine, and of course, turn-by-turn requires download of voice synthesis program.
Good Luck !!
EDIT: this is my ROM for anyone who wants to try. Please use odin to flash to stock, master clear then flash using CW recovery.
http://www.mediafire.com/?x948ax13h8wmf9l
IT IS WHOLLY COOKED IN THE ROMKITCHEN.ORG...I TAKE NO CREDIT AT ALL FOR THE ROM.

Thanks for the support !!
Anyways....enuf of that. I will update this with my experiences with the 9.9.5 base...and a more complete how to for newer-bies.
Have installed the current ICS for the nexus one (the one started by texasice):
Evervolv-Perdo-2.1.0p2-passion-tbwake.zip - 124.1 MB
Used black rose to repartition based on the sizes suggested by texasice.
Everything works and looks fine _except_ for the actual phone! Can't make phone calls, send sms, etc.
Some folks suggest selecting the network operator manually however when I try this it searches for a while (30 secs) then says 'Error searching for network operator'.
I'm in Australia and not every network is compatible with the Nexus one (the major telco Telstra uses a weird frequency and it's never worked on my phone). My telco (Optus) works fine on both stock Android 2.3 & CM7.
Both my original radio (5.08) and the upgraded radio (5.12) have the same problem.
Can anyone suggest anything?
I'd post this to the ICS thread in the nexus one forum but the anti noob features of the forum software won't allow me to.
It's an Alpha ROM. Nowhere in the thread does it state that everything works and that it can be used as a daily driver. If you installed it in the hope that you could contribute to the development of the ROM, perhaps with a working solution to the bugs you encountered, then PM a member of the dev team with your fixes.
Otherwise install a Stable ROM to your device.

Nice thread, maybe you can list what's available (making difference between A700 & A510) splitting by 2 categories : Acer ROM based, AOSP ROM based
Cheers
new user here, so what's the best ROM for A700s? alot of people seem to be on the iconian but it seems the developer is gone, so I guess it should be the cm10.1 version by pawitp?
don't plan to do alot of gaming on it, mainly for magazine reading & web browsing since i've amassed a whole lot of unread zinio magazines which I've subscribed using the free codes they've been generously giving me over the last year.

Not sure what happened to vorbeth and iconian. Most of the roms have been around for awhile, and not a lot of issues.
pawitp has the CM which gets updates.
There,s a rootbox version, and Iconian. Iconian runs Acer build.
As with running Acer builds, we're dependant on Acer to push updates, which unfortunately doesn't happen often. However, in my opinion, there's less incompatibility issues with games. Just my opinion. This is why you don't see a lot of updates on the roms. Example, I'll push my first update since release. Audio improvements for folks that appreciate good audio. A little theming, and custom Acer ring.
I'd say flash them all, and see what works best for you. You usually know within a day or so, if you like the rom.
You are right, I flashed them all. Somehow stock is faster than CM & Iconian but your ROM is the best Thanks
I flashed CM10.1.3 RC2 to my A700. Has been working well and I really enjoy the new features I gained coming from stock. Most importantly for me CM gave me a higher touch sensitivity which drastically improved my user experience and was the main reason I switched to CM. It can have some lag tho.
I was thinking about flashing the kiteman V4.1 kernel to see if it helps with the lag, but I need to verify if the "Very High" touch sensitivity option will still be available. If anyone can advise it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I was thinking about flashing the latest Evil Alex ROM because I have read good reviews. Again, most importantly I need to verify whether touch sensitivity will be increased comparable to CM10.1. Perhaps Moscow Desire or boringest you can inform me?
I would say pawtips' CM 10.2 worked best for me so far. The performance is great and feels far less sluggish than stock, which I had before. Also not having all the branding stuff from Acer also improved the device a lot

i just do some experiment,
replace CM 11 /system/bin/rild with CM 10.2 rild
adding build.prop line with:
rild.libpath=/system/lib/libhuawei-ril.so
rild.libargs=-d /dev/ttyUSB2
one hours trying A701 playing rock music album from Apollo, check on off powerbutton every
5minutes ,
Screen-off problem not occurs yet
but another problem with 3G
*A701 can see network, but 3G Data not connected (3G icon signal bar full)
*set DNS > No network DNS: blank , ip : blank
*wifi works fine
hope someone check CM11 rild file for us A701 users
You should ask @pawitp

Hey A700 users. I'm helping a friend and offered to patch up his A700 from what appears to be stock Android 4.1.1 Build Acer_AV051_A700_1.052.00_PA_CUS1. This does not appear to be the 3G model. I don't see anything in the ROM for mobile networks, and what appears to be the SIM slot next to Micro SD looks like it has a glued in plastic tab in it, not user removable without a bit of force.
So, looks like I need to unlock bootloader, install TWRP/CWM, and choose a ROM which is where my question is aimed. I'm wanting to choose a ROM that is mostly up to date, but also does not have any hardware issues. It appears that CM 12.1 has issues with HDMI which I would like to avoid.
I'm looking for in priority:
1) All hardware working (no workarounds, or other things I need to add as a "if this happens go here and do that" kind of stuff)
2) Stable
3) Up to date.
It appears a lot of ROMs are not seeing much activity which is understandable due to the age of the tablet. I'm keen to just flash this once onto something that is a good daily driver and be done.
After some additional digging I'm thinking about CM11: https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_a700
It's strait forward, I know CM well enough....
I still have my old A510 wall mounted for home automation on CM11 4.4.4 . But the problem is that I can not install newer applications. Any way to get newer version of android on it?
FYI, I just installed our last Android 6 build (https://builds.unlegacy-android.org/aosp-6.0/picasso2/) to my A700 that I'm giving to a relative, as I believe it is rather stable. It's the last stable Android version for this device (Android 7+ has various graphics issues), and it uses kernel 3.4. It can be used with an up-to-date TWRP, such as: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/a51x-a70x-aka-picasso-2-recovery-twrp-3-1-1-0.2678284/.
I'm sure there was a thread for it here, but I just can't find it now...
I upgraded my A700 from latest official CM11 to above mentioned unlegacy build. Unfortunately since then I'm experiencing massive audio distortion so that I had to revert back. Is there anything I missed or anyone with same experience?

Would be epic to share this one!! thank you
I didn't realise i could upload files hopefully it works.
I like using Google Navigation, but it has been messed up every since they tried to update it and make it better. Since their update to their newer navigation, it no longer works at all. My phone never finds the GPS signal. If I downgrade Google navigation back to how it used to be it works great. But it's a pain because it always updates itself with all my other apps when I update them. I've already researched this problem and it appears to be a well known issue with the new version of the app and now one appears to know how to fix it.
As a result, I was hoping someone on here could make a recommendation for a different GPS app that they think is really good. I would prefer free. But I would be willing to buy one if it really works good. Please let me know what you suggest. Thanks.
Ok, The best two navigation apps which works offline( only GPS needed) are Sygic and City Go
I use Sygic which i feel is the best!

Hello,
I need some help regarding the google maps application. Google maps are a big part of my phone and I always use it to get to places I am not familiar with, so it's a pretty important app to have. I have been using this app for a long time now and I also started to flash firmware and root phones. I am currently flashed to a pre-rooted version of Lollipop 5.0 and now my google maps is not working.
The problem I have is, when I start navigation the arrow or cursor moves into a random area and it glitches out it does not stay with my location, it always drifts off the map and goes into a different location and it's really slow to realize where I am at. I haven't had this problem EVER until now when I flashed my firmware, I am thinking maybe flashing it has something to do with this issue.
I am updated to the latest version and no matter what I do I still can't seem to find the solution as I been looking and doing some research for a while now.
If someone could help me find the solution on how to fix this, you would be a life saver and wouldn't know how to thank you.
