Hi everyone, I am a new member in XDA.
I am planning to buy a nexus 5 and I am now a Z1 user.
There is one feature in Z1 which is called optimized backlight control. It adjust the backlight depends on what is displaying.
It can be turn off but after some update the option is always on.
It cause some screen flickering especially when watching video.
So I would like to ask does nexus 5 have this feature? If it does not I am going to buy one.
I remember that xperia T have this feature also but it can be disabled by using a custom kernel.
Sorry for my bad english.

I remember there was an adaptive brightness option..
Anyways the screen doesn't flicker when I watch videos, so that should pretty much solve your problem.

No, I'm pretty positive the N5 doesn't have the optimized backlight control. The only option I've seen for backlight is feature in some of the kernels for a optional backlight dimmer. The only other option is your standard screen brightness levels.

Thanks for both of your answers. I do a little search and accidentally find something called content adaptive brightness control. here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/help/initd-settings-to-disable-content-t1675563
That means Galaxy Nexus have this annoying feature always on also?
It seems like most people are not quite care about screen flickering. Actually on Z1 it is not quite obvious compared to xperia T but it is uncomfortable when the screen flicker.
After all I just want to get a phone without flicker
p.s. I am previously an xperia T owner, when I discover this feature I return the phone. After around a year I get my Z1 but unfortunately this feature is still here. It makes me wonder is this becoming a standard feature? I wound rather scarify my battery life to get a screen without flicker.

Yeah I've never experienced any kind of a screen flicker on the N5... This thing is a beast and has an awesome screen.
Nope, I've owned all nexus phones except the nexus s and I've never experienced any flickering issue. On the rare times I did it was because I compiled my rom wrongly. Purely my fault and not the device.

Just received my tf700t and updated to the new firmware. I noticed that when switching from any screen back to home screen and even throughout watching movies on my tablet, the screen brightness constantly adjusts even with automatic brightness turned off. Its pretty annoying esp. while watching movies. Is there a solution to this problem?
Can't say I have noticed that, and I've used it both with automatic brightness on and off. Maybe try a factory reset?

I noticed the same thing - I believe it's the LED backlight adjusting when you go from bright-to-dim and dim-to-bright screens. It is annoying though. I'm assuming that I'll just get used to it (I just got my TF700 yesterday)...

So your saying that taking off the auto and setting it to the brightest setting and it still adjusts by itself.

Yes, I have noticed it as well. Doesn't bother me, though -- I'd rather have the system tweak itself for brightness than just picking a brightness off-hand and sticking to it.
I've previously owned the tf101 and never had anything like this happen. I use my tf700t at about 30-40% ips, and it constantly adjusts. I haven't tried it at full brightness, but it still is weird that it would keep adjusting even throughout watching movies. It almost like 3 or 4 subtle brightness changes when going from say the apps screen back to the home menu (on default wallpaper). I went through all my settings and googled it without success, so I'm figuring that people either don't notice or just aren't bothered by it. It's driving me crazy though
I noticed this...and thought I was going crazy. Thanks for confirming it's not just me and yes it drives me nuts. Hopefully there comes out a way to stop it.
Auto brightness was way too dim for me. So I've disabled it and set the brightness myself.

What I'm talking about has nothing to do with auto brightness. When it's turned off, there seems to be some type of secondary auto brightness that you have no control over because it constantly adjusts when switching through certain apps/screens and playing movies. Look closely at the screen and you should see it. I'm glad I'm not alone as a few others have confirmed this discovery as well. I don't understand the point in setting your own brightness when the tablet will still adjust itself with auto shut off. I hope a fix of some sort will come soon.
I have not noticed any change in brightness levels with auto brightness turned off.
It reminds me a bit of the brightness/contrast adaptation my SGS2 does -- only there it can be toggled under the display settings, whereas on the TF700 you're just stuck with it.
I don't think that the screen is actually changing brightness - just that the backlight is adjusting as needed depending on how much bright/dim colors are on the screen...
What's strange is that if I enable auto-brightness (which works great in the bright office), that effect seems to go away... Very strange...
I'm assuming that it's a battery-saving thing, but I'm really not sure...

I actually watched this happen (without auto brightness on) without transitioning to a new screen while scrolling past a dark image on a light forum thread. I think it's a tegra 3 thing. I know I read about t3 dynamically adjusting the backlight during video playback and saving more energy in the process than the t3 soc itself consumes during playback.
I've been using mine on power save mode so far. I'm betting the brightness changes would be more fluid and less noticeable at higher speeds.
Read your user manuals. It discusses the feature in its entirety.:good:

So that's probably your answer,
You running on maximum power saving mode. What you expect?
You asking tablet to save all power it can, and that's exactly what's it's doing.
Of course there's a chance of defect, hardware it software. But that could only be tested on a group of other tablets using same settings, to try to recreate what you describing.

I've noticed the same, as well as a few other users, we actually had a (sub)thread about this a few days ago here.
This is in fact very similar (or equal) to dynamic contrast we all know from LCD screens. Unfortunately I do not know the solution, but setting the brightness to as low as I need in any given lighting conditions helps.

One of the most annoying things of the Gear 1 is the motion to wake up the watch. Is it improved? I watched a bunch of hands on but they all tell the same story. No word about the fact that the display can't be lit all the time and that you have to do some abracadabra to wake the device. Most curious about any improvements in this department.

well you can't have screen all the time due to technology used. AMOLED. if it would be LCD then you could have screen on all the time, but without background light (like in sony smartwatch 2). i already got used to blank screen, and i just turn the screen on/off with a single button.

I know. I'm wondering if they made the watch more sensitive for motions, introduced a new or better wake up motion etc . Definitely want to know more about that.

That would be a detail for people coming from the Gear1.
If the battery life is better they might have add a more sensitive option.
Btw personally I dont mind to charge the watch every night. Just some routine. I like it even better than checking the battery to see if it needs to be charged again. So if they made the wake up motion more sensitive and could still pump one day out of the battery, it would definitely be a reason for me to upgrade. Otherwise I see no compelling reasons.
I understand what OP is saying. I'm interested to know that answer as well. I actually had to turn motion off because the watch constantly stayed on while driving all day. It would kill my battery. With it off and me pressing the on button as needed, I get at least 3 days of battery life. A better motion sensor could possibly solve this issue.

what kind of issues did you have? i had none with nova.
I read a hand on today where the reviewer said it does turn on with the flick up of the wrist but that it doesn't turn on right away, like a couple of seconds delay. That isn't good. I want it to be quick like the pebble when you shake the wrist slightly the light comes on. Hopefully they tweak that before it is released....

That's what I want. I move my arm to that wrist up position to much so the watch is almost always on. I wish it had the option to shake the wrist instead so I have better control.
Personally the only good thing about this watch is the motion thing. It works like a good 90-95% of the time. Wake up is excellent on it. However, it goes crazy when your driving.
Recently, I bough a Sony Xperia Z3, and I've noticed some pretty major latency/input lag primarily when you're scrolling, when you scroll, the time between the moment you touch the screen to stop the scrolling and when it actually stops scrolling is really big.
This also doesn't just happen when scrolling it affects gaming, I downloaded the game GolfStars and there's a slider you need to touch and stop to get the ball going straight, and because of the latency you need to touch it before it gets to the destination. This is just an example of the myriad of issues the latency this phone has could cause.
Fixes I tried and did not work:
*Force GPU Rendering
*Touch & Hold Delay set to "short"
*Disabled all image and graphic enhancers.
*Enable Glove Mode
So, is this a software or hardware issue? Or is there no issue, and it's just how the phone was made to work?
I had similiar problem with my Z1 ,i sent it to sony but they won't fix it ;/ its 100% hardware problem

Wow, so it's been a problem since the Z1 and they still haven't fixed it?
I wonder if it's a design philosophy.
And how did you cope with this issue?
I'm still within the period to change the phone for another but I really had my hopes up for this phone especially with the PS4 functionality but this issue is major and it's making me reconsider and changing it for something like the M8 which its screen is SUPER responsive. Just how it should be.
JoseZ3, it would probably help if you'd indicate what FW you actually use. I'm in possession of a Z3C and a Z2, there's no such thing like latency/input lag anywhere. Probably a FW update helps to get it addressed.

Yes, it stops immediately, I tried that as soon as I saw your post. I am not much of a gamer, so I cannot confirm if it happens in games or not, but I'll install one or two tomorrow just to be sure.
It seems to me that I was lucky to get a perfect device, so many people are complaining about camera, lags or broken glass, I don't have any of these problems. The only problem I share with the rest of Z3 owners is quiet notification sound.

The latency went away when I turned off "Magnification Gestures" aka tap to zoom. Now it's snappy and responsive.
So to anyone who might read this in the future and is experiencing the same problem try and disable magnification gestures.

You probably just need to have ambient display enabled for new notifications. Bit of a useless feature mind you.Needs inprovment to flash or pulse but could then become a battery drain
According to an ask me anything session in their forums they are looking into making it more customizable and are also considering adding Always On Display:
Q: Any enhancements in OOS to utilize the curved display in 7Pro?
A: Edge lighting for notification would be a handy feature and we are still considering to add more features that will utilize the curved display in future.
Q: Are the edge notification colors customizable?
A: Not as of now but its something we are considering for future updates
Q: Is there any consideration of added a Always On Display feature? I currently own the Galaxy S8 and I actually like the AoD feature.
A: It's still under consideration. We are working on improving power consumption efficiency for this feature before we implement it.

The edge lighting is pretty useless as is. It flashes for one cycle then disappears. I don't understand how OnePlus thinks this is of any use. Normal people don't stare at their phones all day hoping to catch a glimpse of a notification. I also don't want to have to pick up the phone or tap the screen to check. They opted for no LED, so make edge lighting persistent and customizable. The promise of this feature was actually one of the main reasons I upgraded from the 6T. The 7 Pro is a very impressive device but edge lighting in its current form is worthless.

I was just getting ready to post this. I used it on my 6T, S10+ (untill Holey Light came out) and now also using it on my 7 Pro.
Once set up it works great.
Still don't have the phone, but does this app cause the phone not to go to deep sleep (causing loads of wakelocks)? And does it contribute to screen on time? (meaning that the phone thinks that you're using the screen while it's only the edge lighting that is on).
Makes sense to stay until cleared (comparing with Samsung devices all the time clock on). At the end this is the same display which can handle it without too much battery drainage

It's difficult for me to determine whether it's something intentionally done by the software to limit the screen brightness or a defect. If it's the latter and you can still exchange or at least attempt a warranty swap through a carrier, it maybe something to look worthwhile to look at.

If you're saying that the Note 20 Ultra isn't as bright as previous Samsung phones I would concur!
I have an S10+ and Note 20 Ultra, and I don't know what brightness "problem" is people talking about. They're almost identical. You know that you can adjust brightness to your taste, even in auto, right? By default is dimmer because of energy saving stuff, but you can move the slider up...
I have a note 10+ I still daily, definitely dimmer than my n20u, but that sounds like software trying to adjust for some reason.
Samsung is buggy, will always be buggy I feel like.

no man auto brightness is off
try it out! if you in a dark place not alot of light even if the screen on full brightness it still will dim itself abit
but when you go no outside but to room with much more lite the screen will be more strong
its like the auto brightness even when off still doing somthing to keep the screen
It may be to protect your eyes or something but mine does this as well.
Auto Brightness - Off
Manually set brightness to highest point
Then if you go from a dim room to sunlight the screen will brighten up even with auto brightness off so you can see it under sunlight.
Anyone manage to get this issue resolved? When the phone get hot, the screen dim to the extend u cannot see clearly under the bright hot sun. Using Samsung superb chip. Really lots of issue with note 20 ultra. Samsung taking customer for granted now!

Works well on all my phones, but our individual experience with chrome doesn't add much to the fact that Samsung's software might be limiting the user experience, which it is, more so than other manufacturers.
After all, we should be the ones to dictate what we want to use for web browser or any other app and not have to change it because samsung has buggy software managing it's hardware. Other manufacturers have it down, imy currently loving my xperia mark 2 and the way it's optimized.
