Just flash SuperSu via CWM.

Here's a very similar thread. You're answer is there.

do i have to Clockwordmod flash it first then root the phone?
Yea, first flash clockworkmod with nvflash and then flash the root zip file from jboxer's thread. Reboot and your stock rom will be rooted.
then i should be able to flash any rom correct

Exactly correct. No need to root first. That zip is for those who want to keep their stock rom and just root it.
If you want to flash another rom, then no need to root first. Just nvflash cwm and flash roms to your heart's content.
so i dont even have to root the phone to flash the rom? i can just nvflash and then flash the rom?

Yes and Yes. If you flash a rooted rom then it will be rooted. CWM runs a mini OS, not the full OS, so rooting is not an issue when you are in CWM. Clockworkmod always runs fully rooted.

recovery mode question

i can get into recovery mode on my phone but im not rooted and on stock 2.2

That's just the stock recovery, not much you can do from it and yes everyone can access it unless they are rooted and have a custom recovery.
I thought from there you could flash cwm or a rom? Read somewhere you would have to rename the file as update for it to work.
@blue300 i think that only works with official roms like stock samsung i believe i tried that with my epic and it would not boot but when i did it via stock it booted up fine...

Rooted stock rom ICS 4.0.4 but...

Let's say I want to flash a rom and made a backup thru CWM of my stock rom will I be able to keep root if I flash it back to the stock rom ?
II'm doing this cause I care most about no auto brightness issue than the actual advantage to go with a custom rom.
Thanks
Why don't you just root your stock ROM then? You need to be rooted to flash CWM recovery anyways..

If your ROM is already rooted, and you're restoring it from CWM, yes. If you're using fastboot to re-flash the stock ROM, no, you'll have to re-root it.
I'm kind of confused about what you're asking, though. Can you give more specific details? Are you going to flash a different ROM and try to flash the stock ROM, or parts of it, on top of the new ROM? I wouldn't do that unless you're very sure of what you're doing.

[Q] do I need ROOT to install a custom ROM?

My i815 is on its way to SAMSUNG repair in texas. I tried to root it to install a custom rom and ended up in a bootloop. I did try a bunch of stuff to try and fix it.
Anyways, I have been reading up in the forums and am getting a bit confused:
Do I even NEED to be rooted to install a Custom ROM? Do I just need to install CWM from ODIN (bootloader? or pda?, confused there as well). And then install the ROM I want from within CWM (install from external zip)...
Or, is the i815 so "special" that it requires root?
THX!

I thought it was different for the P68xx and the i815? Can someone with a i815 confirm? If I don't HAVE to root, and all I need is CWM falshed through Odin (PDA), then install zip from CWM, I may try again.
Thx!!!

Kernel question

I recently had to get a replacement phone sent to me from verizon. I'm on 4.4.4 I bought and used sunshine for unlock and s-off. I have flashed twrp and super su for root. I have not touched the kernel so I am still on stock kernel which has write protection. There are kernels out that have this disabled. What I'm trying to find information on is how do I flash one of these. I can't seem to find info on this. I got the original m8 on launch day and have done this months ago and I remember having to put certain things on the SD card and renaming them to something along the lines of (0BP6.img).
Is this correct. I also remember having to adb certain things to the phone. I'm just trying to avoid a brick. Any help is appreciated

So I should just be able to download a sense 4.4.4 kernel and flash in recovery then I can nandroid backup and then start flashing custom roms? I just didn't know if I was able to flash one in recovery coming from stock which is write protected without problems.

have you tried to flash a ROM already? Cause I have been with HTC sense way way back. An I never have had this issue...I just pick a stock ROM an flash it... But you could fast boot a stock insecure boot using fast boot I guess if that's what you want to do.

I haven't tried to flash a stock rom no because I wasn't sure. And I don't want to wipe system and data with a write protected kernel because I'll be screwed. Or do you mean dirty flash a stock rom with the insecure kernel? I just don't want to not have write protection removed and then wipe and soft brick because I can't write to the system with a new rom

If you r s-off unlocked an flashed twrp then flashed SuperSU zip. Myself I just back a backup now verify backup is there an flash a ROM...or you could flash a stock insecure kernel 1st if you want to be extra safe.

Thing is I bricked my last m8 because I flashed a stock recovery and rom to get the 4.4.4 update. And I wiped system and data to re install a rom and couldn't write to system and the phone wouldn't do anything but sit at the HTC screen because it was bricked. That's why I'm concerned with the kernel.

You should be able to just flash pretty much any sense based rom and have what you want. Write protection is removed in all of them, or, at least in all the ones I've tried.
That said, if you've already flashed a kernel that has write protection removed, you should be able to check it by just copying any file to the system folder. A text file, picture, anything. Then reboot the phone and check to see if the file you copied to the system folder is still there. If so, you're good to go. If not, write protection is still being enforced.
