[Q] What's next....after Maxx - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I went to my Verizon store yesterday to see the new HTC One M8 because I'm torn between the more stock android experience of the Maxx vs Sense. The verizon rep told me that their system indicates that the Maxx is now listed with an end of life product code or something. Basically it's on it's way out to be phased out or replaced.!
Does anyone have any insight as to what might be next. I'd hate to buy a Maxx this week to only find out the next phone is right around the corner.

Only rumors I've seen in regards to a Maxx follow-up have been Q4 of this year. End of life doesn't mean much other than they won't be restocking the phone. Some devices EOL in just a couple months.

Every year a new droid/droids comes out. I don't think the maxx is anywhere being done I could see a few more updates coming. This phone kicks ass and won't be over shadowed anytime soon.

how long was the droid razr maxx hd out before they replaced it with the Maxx?

we should know at the end of summer, its one every year, razr maxx on sep 2011, razr hd maxx sep 2012, droid maxx, sep 2013.
we'll hear about it on july i think and have it on september.

The past duration shouldn't matter, because Verizon very clearly said last year when the Ultra series was released that they were not going to replace it as quickly as they had in the past. They want potential buyers to feel that they aren't being ripped off, like Razr buyers did when the Razr Maxx came out a few weeks later, or Droid 3 users did when the Droid 4 came out 5 months later.

My guess is that they will have updates at some point late summer or early fall. I actually think that the Droids came out a little late last year, based on the fact that they were a little low on the dpi of the displays and they weren't using Snapdragon 800 systems. My guess is that Moto took more time than planned getting the touchless controls and active display working right. I could be wrong about that, but, based on the hardware the phone used, compared with other phones that came out last year, I always wondered if the plan was to come out with the Moto X and Droids early summer?
I could be very wrong about that, of course...

The Moto X and Droids were never meant to have top of the line hardware specs. They were designed around features and software optimized for the hardware. The custom CPU's cleary show they weren't concerned about using the mainstream "best" hardware.

Yes, I've read those explanations. It's also possible that it was just PR.
It doesn't matter - Verizon wants these new Droids to not be replaced as fast as old ones were. So, sometime this year for sure, and probably this summer or early fall.

Everyone keeps saying better hardware its not better just faster. There is nothing substandard about the x or droids internals. If anything its just as fast as the 800 without the battery drain. I am a car guy at heart so I will use this analogy. Its better to have a 300 HP engine in a 2000 pound car then a 600 HP engine in a 4000 pound car. There both equally fast but the 600hp car is going to suck gas like a *****.

What to upgrade to?

OK so I just got this phone a few days ago from verizon but I'm considering doing an exchange within 14 days. What phones out now have good support as far as rooting, custom ROMs, etc. The DX2 doesn't have much going for it, it seems. I've mainly got my eye on the bionic but what are your thoughts on the current phones?
Also does anyone know anything about the Nexus Prime. As in a release date? That phone is looking sexy but if its not released within my 14 day return window I don't think I will be able to touch it.
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any replies.

Verizon phones are pretty much anti flashing/custom roms phones.
I realize that now. This was the first phone I've rooted. If I would have known how much Verizon locks their devices down I would have just swapped carriers. Stuck for 2 years now though. Wanna make the best of it

This is probably not what you are looking for but the HTC Droid Incredible is easy to root and still has great dev support. I have one and I am thinking about upgrading to something else.

don't listen to him. incredible is horrifically underpowered as compared to modern dual core phones. Get the bionic before your 14 days is up. cyanogenMod is already in alpha for it, and its promised to get ICS.

No offense but he asked what phones for Verizon are easy to root and have good dev support. The incredible has both.
My last incredible got stuck in boot loop (first problem in over a year of ownership) so Verizon sent me a new one. They also offered me an early upgrade so I was thinking of upgrading to something else. I am still undecided if I should upgrade or not.
The Incredible is still a great phone that is both stable and fast.

I'm leaning more towards the bionic. I don't much see the point in getting a phone that is pretty far behind what's out now. Are there even any phones that can compare to the Droid right now?

which droid do you mean? if you mean the OG moto droid, then the only thing that is that weak still sold on verizion are their bottom-of-the-line free phones (moto citus, LG votrex) which are absolute POS devices.

Guess I should have said bionic instead of just Droid but I think it was safe to assume I meant bionic since that's what I've been talking about. Do the even still sell the OG Droid?
Ill have to wait a few days and see if it will be worth the 35 dollar restocking fee plus the cash ill be eating for the case, screen protectors, and car dock. On top of the extra 200 bucks for the bionic itself lol

no, there's nothing that can measure up to the bionic, and there won't be for about 2 weeks (roughly). then there will be several things
I know lol that's what I hate about the cell phone market. You can save your upgrade for months knowing that an amazing phone is about to come out then weeks, even days later here comes something better. I only have until November 2nd to make a decision though. I wish the nexus prime was coming out before then...

The Galaxy Nexus should be released on November 10 ,2011. Looks like you wont be able to touch it , unless you find a way of pre ordering it

Just thought I'd post an update. As you can see I decided to exchange for the bionic. Its actually kind of funny because the Verizon rep sold it to me for a lot less than he should of. I paid 100-50(MIR) for the X2 plus around 60 for the car charger, screen protectors, and navigation dock.
So the Bionic should have been 250-50(the actual price paid for the X2)+35 dollars for the restocking fee. So around 235 before tax. However he told me 143 after tax. Me being an idiot and a fairly honest guy told him that the price seemed low. So he went through the receipts and told me "well you paid 150 for the X2 so you get that price off of the bionic." I just nodded and smiled.
Not sure where he got 150 from but I'm not complaining. Now just to see if I still get the $50 MIR.

Buy Verizon SGS3 for $150, or hold out?

Hey guys,
Is there any reason I should hold out on buying this phone? I can get it from amazonwireless for 150$ and no tax.
Is there any other awesome android phones coming out on verizon this year? Or do you think the price will drop drastically soon (maybe to 99$?)

There might be some new phones, they just announced the Droid Razr HD and Droid Razr Maxx HD, they might be getting a nexus device but who knows. I doubt the price will drop until maybe next January. I say go for it. Its an awesome phone.
I see no need to hold out. Only thing coming to think about imo is the Razr HD/Maxx HD, but to me neither one is better than the S3

I noticed the new droids... my sister has a Droid 3. It sucks though, cause she's stuck on gingerbread and it's not a popular phone for customization. From what i read (And experienced), motorola is horrible for tweaking, while samsung is the best with htc in 2nd.
Since this phone has an unlocked bootloader now, and also has GSM radio, that's a big plus for me.
I just don't want this phone to fall another 50$ right after i buy it, especially with iphone 5s coming out soon competing with it.
Do you guys know if there's an even cheaper way to get it other than 150$?

@fr8cture return and buy it again! get your $50 back!
@rpn its probably not going to sink any further than $150 with a new contract for a while. The only reasons I can think of holding back is to wait for the 64GB model (which may or may not be sold by verizon)
Whatever you do, make sure you refuse to give up an unlimited data plan if you currently have one! Make sure the salesman knows its a deal breaker (even if its really not)

I paid $515 on eBay, so I say you both got good deals lol....that said, I haven't thought twice about paying that price, and doesn't bother me people get it much cheaper on upgrade prices
Is this for the 16 or 32 gig model?
The new Motorola droids are identical to the s3 spec wise. In my opinion Motorola typically has better reception than I have had with the s3. But if you like to mod, there will definitely be a better following with the s3, and aftermarket accessories will be more widely available. The other upside to moto is the amazing battery life of the maxx.

Yep I'd be surprised if it came out before October 2013. The reason this was out so soon in my opinion is because the amount of carriers that got it. Everyone threw money as Samsung, so instead of only a few getting it like the GS2, pretty much everyone did this time around.
Also if you want a phone with customization do not buy a Motorola. They already confirmed that developer editions of these phones will be coming out for $500+ . Coming from a X2, no one could unlock that thing.
I think you can wait for a period of time.

Can't you just root it? Someone would have to find a way to unlock bootloader but still.
SG3 is now $139 on Amazon wireless. I just got one.
What is there to even consider, this is totally a no-brainer... DO IT man!
S3 specs are lightyears away from any phones i foresee coming out in the next 3-4 months.
This is going to be THE phone until its replacement comes out. I would be amazed if we don't see a nexus by the end of the year, but if you are Verizon don't even bother looking at it. And I personally don't think it is worth waiting. The S3 has gotten awesome support and is such an awesome piece of hardware that you won't regret owning it!

Droid Maxx HD soon?

They release the current model with lower spec and maybe 6 months later we have all the features we were hoping for in an HD model.
I am ready to go get this phone now but I'd imagine they will(Moto) come out with the higher grade product not long after this current model.
Thoughts?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
That was a concern for me as well, seeing as how release-happy Moto has been in the past (specifically Droid 3 --> Droid 4).
But how I see it, the Razr --> Razr HD transition, we saw a different design and better screen, mainly. I wasn't happy with their 720p decision on the 2013 Droids, but after looking at it in the store, it didn't bother me. So if they choose to release a 1080p update, I probably won't care too much unless the design of the device is amazing. I doubt Motorola would create a battery that's like 3800-4000mAH, and the battery life is just fine right now. Same for the camera - I doubt Motorola will actually release an amazing camera...
Not sure what else they would add that would make me want it. MicroSD maybe?
I don't forsee this at all. Droid-brand releases are going to slow now that Google has ahold of them. More likely to see a Moto X refresh in ~6-9 months I think than Droid line.... Plus your "HD" question, this already is the HD version, its just not in the title. You probably mean FHD :silly:
I believe Motorola fulfilled their contract with Verizon to manufacture the Droids. These were the last set

You can't assume moto's past records with the new Google/Moto. Case in point is the fact that motoblur no longer exists... Thanks to Sundar and team.
Google has already improved on the camera hardware. In actuality, the hardware for the camera is pretty nice... The software needs some work on to match the hardware reqs.

Maxx vs X pre purchase questions.

I am wondering if the maxx is worth getting over the x. I ask because I know the x is already on 4.4 and I don't know if the x on vzw is locked like every other phone. I know this one is, so I doubt there are or will be any ports to speed up the process of updates. So is it worth it to get the maxx for the battery life and wireless charging or just go with the X. Just wanted to get some owners thoughts. Thanks.

I thought so but comes down to individual opinion or preference. Yes, they both are locked since Verizon mandates it be so. The only unlocked ones will be the developer editions bought off contract. I would suggest demoing them in a Verizon store to see the difference first hand then.

I guess that is the vzw way. So i can't really expect much else. I guess the main thing I'm wondering about is the speed of updates compared with the X since I guess there won't be much in the way of development for the maxx. Or so I assume based on previous experiences with locked bootloaders.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I have both. My X is a locked VZW one and my Maxx is the VZW dev edition. Supposedly the ultra/maxx is getting 4.4 soon so the update speed will probably be comparable to the X since both are so similar. I love the form of the X and the battery life on the Maxx. If I had to choose between the two, I'd have to go for the Maxx. I just love not having to charge it for two days and aside from the form, it's basically an X with better battery life.

the Ultra/Maxx has been running about 2 weeks behind the X in updates. Definitely more development for the X even the locked ones than the Ultra/Maxx but, imho, the stock ROM is pretty close to vanilla android and is very, very fluid and smooth.
I love my Maxx, and while I cant wait for kit kat, I do not regret getting the Maxx over the x. especially since I was able to get best buy to price match Radio Shack on the maxx down to the same price the x was going for.
The locked bootloader hardly matters to me, the stock software is buttery smooth. Just top it with root, and sprinkle some xposed framework to taste. No kitchen needed!

The big problem with locked bootloaders is that you need to wait for an exploit to get root. Or, you need to stay on old versions. The problem is, as a user, you really do want to have those root exploits patched. If you care about security, that is.
I have a Maxx. Like stonesaber, I really like the form factor of the Moto X, but I really wanted the longest battery life I could get. That ultimately took precedence. Wireless charging is a nice add-on feature, too, but that didn't factor into my decision at all. If for some reason you don't care that much about battery life, I think the Moto X is the right choice.
The Droid lineup should stay relatively up-to-date thanks to being so similar to the Moto X. But, it's a little disappointing that we're 2 weeks out from the Verizon Moto X kitkat OTA and we don't even have an active soak test going on (these aren't publicized, but the news always leaks).

It will be nice to get 4.4 on the MAXX, but it's honestly almost perfect as is. If it had a slightly better camera, it would be flawless. Even completely stock, non-rooted. This is my first phone I haven't rooted, and I've been with Android since the ADP1.

The latest droid OTA was about 4-5 weeks behind the first Moto X OTA (ignore the fact that it was 2 weeks behind the VZW update - Verizon was early with the KK update), and I am sure that Moto was pretty much shut down last week for Thanksgiving, so that's a lost week. There are still Moto X 4.4 updates that have not been done. Also, when they announced the Moto G a few weeks ago with 4.3 they announced that the G would get 4.4 by January. My guess is that they may be working on getting that done before the Droids. So, if we're lucky, we see soak test rumors in a couple of weeks, to as long as month after that.
I guess we'll see, though.

I'll be really disappointed if we end up with update more than about a month behind VZW's Moto X...
I guess I've generally assumed Verizon has been the slow party when it comes to software updates. Given how close the Moto X is to the Droid lineup, I initially assumed (probably incorrectly) Motorola would deliver Droid updates to VZW at about the same time as the Moto X update. I assumed the delay was largely due to VZW only wanting to focus their testing on one device at a time.
Given the speed of the VZW Moto X update, now I'm really thinking Motorola is holding up the show.
I'm finding this a little troubling. When I assumed Motorola basically would/could create Droid updates with Moto X updates, I felt pretty confident that as long as the Moto X lineup is getting updates, we'd get updates. I'm less convinced that's going to be the case now. Motorola doesn't really care about the Droid lineup- the Moto X is their baby.

Even if it's a month behind, it will likely be before any other non-Google phone. So far, only the X, the Nexus devices, and the Google experience phones have KitKat. If that's the experience going forward, I'll be very pleased. (That said, I am sure that when Moto releases an update to X, and updates to the Droids, sometime next year, our updates come later, just as the Razr HD series will get KK updates after these Droids. So it goes...)

Yes, Moto X is their baby, and all of those updates are not yet done (I think I read that Sprint is sending out soak test emails today.) Now maybe the Moto G bumps the Droids, too, though we'll see. However, both Motorola and Verizon have said that they will do a much better job on timely updates. Motorola said this when they released their first phones post-Google acquisition (the new Droids and the X) and Verizon said so at, I believe, the Droid release event last summer. So far that's looking right. So, yes, I think that Motorola really does care about the Droids. However, the X is the phone that *they* sell and that is the basis for their reputation. It's simply a no-brainer that they will pay attention to that phone before the Droids.
The Maxx is a great phone on Jellybean. Looking at the Moto X boards, it seems there are some bugs on KitKat at the moment. Maybe it's good that we're, um, "late".
I love this phone, like so much. The battery life is incredible
Love that it wakes up when I pull out out of my pocket (works great if you have a double tap to turn off the screen when you're done. Power button is barely used)
Touchless control is amazing.
Coming from the note 3 to the LG G2, I'm incredibly happy with this phone

Its a preference issue. If you like a long battery life then the maxx is for you. I was shocked today when I spent 10 hours at a concert on my phone making calls recording video updating my sites etc. I was in the middle of a crowd and the bags of water that people are wrecked my reception, but after the show I had 48% left. The phone was actually warm in my pocket most of the time because of the reception.

Thanks all for the responses. Can I ask what kinds of normal screen on time you guys are getting?

I get a good 6 hrs. and thats of good constant use... i'd imagine if you just use your phone sporadically through the day, it'd get alot more.

Yesterday, after 15 hours off charger, I had 4 hours of screen on time and was still at 45%, and a good chunk of that screen on time was playing games.

Sorry to quote myself, but it looks like this is a reliable indicator for updates - when the X gets its first update, the Droids are about 4-6 weeks behind. The X first got the update November 19, the Droids started December 19. I'm fine with that. (Let's hope that future updates don't brick stock phones, though.)

I just don't get the delay. They are the same phones with the exception of the screen and battery. But you were pretty spot on.

If I may ask, did anyone here upgrade from the Driod 4. My fiancee has one and it gets much better signal than my S4 does. I didn't realize it until we left to go out of town to a place generally has poor service. Now she has service and I don't. Thanks again.

[Q] Going to Verizon... Which phone should I get?

Title says it all. I am switching to Verizon this week and am wondering which phone I should get. I am thinking the s5 but just want to see if there is something I am missing that they may have out that AT&T doesn't or if there is something releasing very soon worth waiting for.
Thanks!

if the moto x is still there i would Grab that, im in love with mine and have always loved my motorola line (OG Droid 1/OG Droid 2/ Droid X/ Droid Razer) for performance but not (for verizon also) for the locked bootloaders and terrible time with trying to root them and such. note if you are gonna root the moto x it does not have complete root i think and will only work on 4.4.3 and under. we are currently updated to 4.4.4. the moto x is a great phone even though its specs are last years (free on a 2 year contract which i got in may) it still BLOWS AWAY Games and the performance is Great. the only bad thing i can say about it is the battery life is a little on the low side but can last you about a day or two with mild use. also for some reason i get photos from people late. other than that its a great phone, but if you are for developing and looking to root/flash roms on it please get a different carrier other than Verizon or AT&T, they lock their bootloaders.
