was seriously debating on picking up a G2 for another line but looks like this sections on life support? not much going on, def not nothing but I had hoped for more or am I missing something?
not much for roms/kernels/mods and no root for kit kat yet?
The phone is pretty awesome stock. The only real reason I've found to root was to install the camera mod and titanium backup. Tried a few Roms, but keep going back to stock because it just works better and the battery life is awesome.

I'm sure it is, I've played with it for quite a while, but options are always nice, and there doesn't seem to be many besides aosp variants.
is there something halting development or just lack of interest?
The mods recently split the forums by carrier. If you look at the non carrier branded g2 forum you will see roms that are compatible with the T-Mobile variant. There are several.

They screwed with the forums there was plenty of activity prior. We've got root and custom recovery on stock kit kat and other custom rom support. Unless you wanna wait for g pro 2, G3, or opt for the G2 mini, go for it.

Hi, all. I currently have an Epic 4G. But it is broken, (mic and phone speaker don't work at all) so I am entitled to a warranty replacement. This was an Asurion replacement so I talked to them. I asked them to give me a Nexus S 4G instead and I got it without too much problem. The rep I was talking to said he couldn't do it but his boss said yes without hesitation (maybe I should have asked for an Epic Touch 4G instead and seen what happened but I digress). If I am lucky the phone will arrive tomorrow but probably the next day.
Anyway, I am hoping that I can get some advice on this phone. How to root it? What Roms/Kernels are the best. Ect.
Thank you very much!
About which roms or kernels are the best, there's not an easy answer to that. Being the developer phones, the nexus line has a lot of people working on the source. This is good and bad, because there are a lot of cool things you can get on your phone, but a lot of stuff will not work. Often times there will be a tradeoff between getting bleeding edge updates and having a stable system.
That being said, NANDroid backup is your best friend. Before every flash, backup your entire phone's state. Then if nothing works, restore your backup and it is like nothing ever happened.
Well to start off, and always a good impression, is to search for the first request. Shouldn't be hard to find a thread about rooting a NS4G or a YouTube video. Just looks better on you.
As far as ROMS go, well Cyanogenmod is a well respected name in that realm. Also you could pick from any of the other hundreds of ICS Roms. Just make sure you get it from the Nexus S "4G" forum.
Dig around in the forums. Shouldn't take long to find a thread with the topics you are asking about.
Good luck and welcome to the Nexus club.

Best ROM hands down is gummy nexus. I promise you, you WILL not find a better ICS ROM for the NS4G. The kernel baked into the ROM is Mathkids 14.5 and works great.

And the is currently a one click root method in the NS4G forums. Check it out.

Unlock boot loader as soon as possible because it will erase everything on your phone including SD card.
As far as ROMs you've gotta use a ICS ROM. There's lot of great GB ROMs but you're not getting a Nexus to be stuck on last year's OS. CM9 Is currently my favorite. Lots of other ROMs have more tweaks like quad and octo locks but CM9 is the smoothest for me. But try em all, why not?
As far as kernels there are a lot of good options. Personally I like Steve Garden's latest. Has the best colors without using Voodoo so there's no annoying green flash when locking. But again, try em all!
Oh... and how to root? Well, it's basically "fastboot oem unlock" "fastboot flash recovery whateverrecoveryyouchoose.img" and flash the SU binary in recovery. Or just flash a ROM.
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE* (relax, it's a signature)

Agreed 1millon % that's what I run. Can't find anything better. Rom is super stable and battery life is insanely good.

It is all depend on how much budget you have. If you have a high budget, I would say look at the Galaxy Nexus instead. Otherwise, the normal Nexus S is good enough. There aren't many 4G carrier available, and you won't need 4G in daily life.
I come from an epic. No regrets whatsoever. The only wins the epic has over the ns4g are the better camera, and speaker. Also the epic seems to get better 3g and 4g reception. Other than that everything else is so much better. Development included.

+1 to what rush said. I had to bring my epic in for repairs but they didn't have any refurbs so the sent me a nexus. Check out shabby's one click root and there is also a one click unroot. Qbking has some good videos of various roms also.

Great read! I too am a new comer here, coming from the misfit phone Droid X2, which was a decent phone, but with no unlockable bootloader, will never reach its potential, but we had great devs that made some decent roms with what they had. But anyways I'm really liking this phone so far, & with unlockable bootloader & so many roms, I'm feelin all goody like a fat kid in a candy store! Lol And seems like a good community here

GummyNexus is good, I just don't like the visual changes. I would go with Bigxie's ICS Rom. That, combined with the Matrix 14.5 kernel set to lulzactive is perfect. 9 hours unplugged and I was at 86%.

oICS v43 is good too, but I am thinking of giving gummy another try. I've been hearing that it's doing quite well and oICS hasn't been updated in awhile(although it is reportedly still in development.)
great phone! im coming from a evo 4g and didn't want to use my upgrade so I bought this phone off ebay. Loving it so much. I think I'm stuck on nexus phones from here on out (^_^)
Yeah advice is get an epic touch lol better phone. Better battery. But its not free like the nexus is right now. My advice, get free nexus from sprint online and then just grab the galaxy nexus when it drops later.

Based on feature set, availability and price my reasearch has led me to this phone with the RAZR as a second choice(pentile screen, waker battery, no FM). The RAZR has better development though(incl kexec). I'm hoping to run ICS as a daily driver in the very near future and JB/CM10 down the line. What do you think?
Price-wise it's the best phone you can get. I myself owned a HTC magic and then a nexus one and can confirm that the build quality is solid. Webtop is also a great feature.
Rom-wise we've stock/modded ICS and soon ported CM10. But don't expect to unlock the bootloader. If you can live with it, buy it

Keep in mind, this is one persons opinion, but personally, I love this phone. We have 2 ICS Leaks, and CM10 is right around the corner.
It's mainly your preference, but i'd say just to be sure you want this phone, read all that you can from this forum.

Bootmenu is great man. With it, you can essentially dual boot so to speak. Check the thread out, it tells you ALMOST everything you need to know. Something's you can read around the forums and find answers to. I've become pretty familiar with it, so if you have any specific questions feel free to ask me.
Also others are here to help too
By the way, just a heads up, this should be in Q&A

Heh Heh Heh......... That's my boy :victory:
Thread Move in progress.
Oh, BTW, threw a couple thanks to you 2 for great advice to the new people. Way to go!
If you can live with a locked bootloader I don't see why not, the specs are decent, screen size is pretty good and overall quality is nice. We have ICS (leak), a few custom roms, and CM10 is being worked on (I believe camera isn't working just yet). Mine is currently softbricked because I got into a bootloop and my battery is low , but that's easy to fix once I can charge the battery, which I'm being patient with and not doing anything risky and potentially harmful to the battery or phone. In conclusion, if the price is right, it's a pretty decent phone, with a locked bootloader (Always a catch)
Hmm. How about making a bounty or making a collection for a donor device to a dev? Just thinking out loud...
The only feature I'm missing that a custom kernel might solve is 2-way call recording. I think...

You won't be disappointed. This is only the second phone I've owned in 16 years that I haven't wanted to destroy after a couple months of use.
Is the lack of support from Motorola annoying? Sure, but the amount of support from the developers and everyone in this community is all you will need. Whether you stay on Gingerbread or upgrade to the ICS leak, there are plenty of amazing ROMS and mods to play with.
Just make sure you read through the forums (especially the stickies) and familiarize yourself with phone and the community.

Thanks guys. At least ICS leaks point to official release in the works unlike my other Motos.
damn, i was just about to sell you mine
This is a sweet phone why do you want to sell it?
Well, want this phone but I see that it has root access and CWM and that's cool but, I don't see any ROM's made for it.
So weird, any developers got curious about Cyanogenmod or something?
It's worth to buy one for christmas?
The Moto G is being updated to 4.4.2 right now, so I don't see the need for custom ROMs right now. But regardless, the Moto G is an awesome phone.

Not many people have the device yet, so give it a little while. I'm sure by Jan we'll have some CM builds, AOKP, god knows what else.
Go for it, its a new device it will take some time once the complete source files are released. The more no of people owning this device, more chances are there for custom ROM!
We already got kitkat so there's no need i guess.
BTW there is a custom ROM based on stock JB, check in the development section it is in the beta stage!
The g isn't even a month old! Give development time. It will happen.

Right, I'll buy it.
No lags whatsoever?
Can't wait to see ROM's with governors and tweaks, even faster!
I have yet to experience any concerning lag. To be honest I expected less of a phone than what its proven to be. Battery life is pretty ridiculous actually. Impressed is an understatement. Only Thing I've noticed is display related. When looking from the top down it gets a little washed out. Not at all a reason to not get this phone. For $200? There is no reason to not buy this thing.

Hey all,
I've seen a lot of threads about changing the battery, but not about changing the camera. Would this even be possible? The G2 camera connector seems to be the same and in the same side, so, if we could fit it in the nexus 5, the only trouble would be the drivers right?
I guess people who want to swap ol dis better go n buy the G2 and flash pure android into it...N5 is in itself is a very nice phone!!

Why not just buy the G2 and flash the 4.4.2 stock of N5 instead of trying to murder your N5, spare it some agony and just give it away and buy a G2.

sure.. then why have roms like cyanogenmod if i can get an oppo with cyanogenmod stock? Why have better camera software mods if i can get an iPhone? Why have sound hardware mods if i can get an HTC One? Why swap batteries if I can get an Galaxy Note? and the list goes on and on... The Nexus is to play with it, develop and so on.

well i will say go for nexus devices...peferably nexus 5...always first to get updates and great at hardware part too...u get pure android experience along with lots of options as the sources are always out there and nothing like touchwiz or sense messing up the developement...the developement is most active in those devices and sources are always there taken directly from google repos
Well, I'm moving soon and I need a different phone since I don't have 4g over there. Im looking at the lg g2, since it has one of the best batteries and its not too big. It's LG's flagship and I like the knock on feature!

I'd recommend getting the Nexus 5. As I am a fan of AOSP it's outstanding. Performance is great, haven't had any trouble with any lags (well exaggerating much lol) and it just feels right for me. 2.26 GHz is just amazing. Unlike the Blaze it has 16 GB of memory which is great for having the big applications. 8MP camera could be better, but it's still outstanding.
When I was ready for upgrade it was between nexus 5 and moto x. I chose moto x and have had no issues. CM11 and other ROMs are being developed

Thanks to those who have given me suggestions originally I was thinking something mainstream and well known like a flagship phone like the S5 or something like that but is their price tag really worth it or is there a better not as well known phone? Kinda like how the blaze basically was a smaller S2? I mean I'm looking for a Samsung, LG, or Motorola? Price isn't a problem I just want long lasting battery life, performance, 4G / LTE, A Good Camera and A Reasonable Storage Space? Any new suggestions?

well if price aint a problem then s5 is definitely what ya looking for...awsome battery life.. u can easily get 15 hours video playback..or u can get htc one(m8) which is a tad bit heavier coz of its metal casing...but what i dont like about them phones is that they are laden with so much crap that we dont ever use...and s5 is big on fitness stuff...and yes moto g is for you if ya looking for smaller screen(4.5 inch...bigger than blaze) but still easy to use with one hand...good specs..actually better specs than phones almost about twice the price...good battery life(9-10 hour video playback) and internal storage is optional for 8gb or 16 gb..
I tried the moto g, well I owned one for a short period of time... I got grounded for some bs so I went into target and bought one of those prepaid phones to use as a WiFi phone I absolutely loved it but I returned it when I got ungrounded anyways I decided to wait for the nexus 6 but I'll probably buy a nexus 5 sometime this week to use in the meantime
