Earlier, I was on the Elix-R ROM. I was going to upgrade to the newest version of it and made a nandroid backup but forgot to make a TiBu of all my apps. Would it be safe and possible for me to restore all of my app data from the nandroid backup by doing an advanced restore of my data?
you were upgrading the rom that you were using.. why would you wipe data?? if you are upgrading a rom, you never have to wipe anything. all you do is flash the updated rom(and gapps) on top of what youre running without wiping anything.

I always prefer doing clean flashes of all of the ROMs I run.

also, another question: should making a TiBu and then erasing the system to flash a new ROM affect the backup of apps or no?
You could practice restoring your nandroid backup, then 'dirty' flashing the ROM upgrade straight over the top.
Once you get used to it, dirty flashing isn't so bad. Saves a ton of time. Plus you have the nandroid just in case .
In answer to your query though, you can extract apps and app data using the appropriately named Nandroid Manager. I used it before on a now sold Nexus 7 when it decided to not boot up but could get to recovery and make a backup.

So when i move to a new version of a rom, how do i keep all my info? I was just used to backup/restore with a rom version change on cyanogenmod where i can restore and it won't overwrite the previous rom and revert changes.
Do i always have to wipe all data when uploading a new rom?
Shouldn't the nandroid backup restore everything but keep the current rom?

I learned this today myself.
General rule is:
Switching ROMs? Wipe everything
Updating a ROM? Wipe cache and dalvik-cache
Installing an addon? Don't need to wipe anything
i guess that answers part of my question. the main part was when i switch roms, how do i keep all of my info? when using cyanogenmod, i could back up using nandroid backup from recovery, and restore when i installed a new rom, however it seems with some roms i cannot do this as it will overwrite changes in the new rom. how do i avoid this, how do i keep all of my data while not overwriting the new rom changes?
I'll try to answer your question, if I think I know what you mean by data. Data from ROM or data from phone/apps.
If data from phone/apps. then I would suggest Titanium Backup(Paid version) from market. Once you install a New ROM with a complete Data wipe, what ever you backed up with TB from your previous setting can be restored. This is good if you are installing a ROM not from the same dev.
Other wise if you installing a ROM from same dev, a revision, you don't have to do a wipe data.
If data from ROM, well I don't know there, never had to do it.

ok, so you're saying when, let's say, going from 1.0 to 1.1 of the same dev rom, just an update, i do not need to wipe data?
Yes. The only time you ever need to wipe data and cache is when you trying a ROM from a different dev.
If installing a different rom, then that's where TB comes in handy.
Side note: Also CWM ROM Manager backup utility will backup every thing if you wanted to revert back.
Dayton advice above is a good rule to follow.
There's other bits and pieces but search or ask.

You can only restore CWM backups with CWM and TWRP backups with TWRP. As of now CWM 6's backup function is broken but it is being worked on. So make sure your Backups are from either TWRP or CMW 5 if you want them to work.
To restore a backup I wipe data/factory reset and wipe system. Then choose the backup I want to restore. No need to fix permissions unless things start to act funny after the restore. As far as battery calibration goes it's a myth.

With R6, Bryan said he fixed the backup and restore issues with CWM6. Idk about the rest of the features
When you say "Cyanogen" I think many assume you mean CM9 (ICS).
If you are running CM7 (GB), be very careful how you restore. Most system data (and perhaps some user data) from GB is not compatible with ICS.

As Fb said in the post you linked you flash the boot.img that came with your rom or reflash the rom.
The more times you flash roms the more issues you could have with "gremlins". Read more about it in the link.

Hi All,
Today suddenly my device hung up on Android screen and it doesn't go forward. I waited for like 10-15 min,pulled the battery out and rebooted but nothing happens(it still is stuck up on boot screen). I have been on this ROM for more than 8 months from now. What could go wrong suddenly?
Device: Inspire 4G
ROM: SVHD
Can anyone suggest me how to get past it without probably loosing my data?

as for the problem.. it happened to me after using the same ROM for a long time without wiping cache and dalvik
try to backup the ROM..do a clean install..restore what you can from the Back up using TB

Backed up the ROM and installed with clearing everything. Tried to restore the data but it's hanging up again. So,thought to forgot abt the apps data.

no no..dont restore the data in recovery
use titanium backup to extract the wanted APKs and data from the backup after installing a clean ROM
May I suggest restoring your broken backup (even if it fails) and reinstall SVHD over it without wiping anything except Dalvik, cache and battery stats. If everything else fails checkout one of the newer kitkat roms and manually restore your data partition or anything else needed. You can manually backup data or any other partition through AROMA file manager through recovery hope I help you out bro. Have a nice day.

Can I know how to achieve this. Usually I restore a backup that's created from titanium backup. But as I don't have TB files, how to restore the data from system backup from Titanium Backup?

Hello,
My DHD hung up with Cyanogenmod, one week after intallation. the same problem with SVHD.
several roms were tested, some with bugs and others without bugs but slow in using or other reboots when the camera is used.
Finally, I installed a rooted stock rom, (Android 2.3.5), every thing works correctly.

Hi, I use this rom in my Galaxy S Advance, and I just wanna update it into new verion which is released. I know that can be noob and dumb question but I really duuno if should I again wipe device all the time when I want install update, or should I normally put install zip into sd card and then just run it form bot w/o any wipe? Isn't system crash then?

That depends on the rom. If you change Addroid versions e.g.
4.2.2->4.4.2 = FULL WIPE
update to a newer release of the same rom / android version e.g. 4.4.2 build 03/31 --> 4.4.2 04/25 = wiping cache + dalvik will work in most cases. Just make a full backup before you flash a new rom.zip

Use your custom recovery to perform a backup Two months is pretty long and probably will cause issues cause CM11 is under heavy development

i REALLY suggest making a nandroid backup via recovery instead of backing up just your apps and data. If you brick the installation, phone is fine again in 3 minutes via restoring the nandroid backup. Its fu... easy. Just go to TWRP or CWM or whatever you use and press backup to sd. Thats all. Restore? Just press restore from sd

No, twrp needs a wipe, but since you have root you can backup everything anyway.
Why not try flashfire anyway, i though that was its purpose.

Alright i actually have everything backed up with titanium backup but i have not tried to restore from backup after a wipe and im not sure that if my phone is going to be in exactly the same state as it was before, with sms phone contacts apps etc.
The FlashFire thing is because im worried that i will brick my phone.!
If you have root you can backup with Titanium. Make sure that you have your SDCARD set as your backup location in preferences.
Once you do your Titanium backup to your SD card, then do the TWRP install.
Then flash ROM, etc.
Then restore from Titanium.

And also do a samsung cloud backup so it can restore the apps and homescreen and all. After that you can restore your app data with TB
