1.5hr SOT - I must be doing something.. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
So I've had my Nexus 5 for quite some time now and tried a few different ROMs and Kernel combinations. I care a LOT about battery life but this device has never really kept up to what others are saying it's capable of.
ROM: OmniROM latest nightly
Kernel: Faux123 Kernel v013
I'm currently getting around 1.5 hours of screen on time of use with no 'battery saving' apps, no greenify, location reporting on. The only setting I've changed is make GPS set to battery saving. Is this normal? Android OS takes up 30% of the battery stats. I have also attempted a full factory reset and built it from scratch (not restoring any backups) with no change.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks!

use better battery stats and give us that info.

You have the Android OS disease

1) Set screen brightness manually.
2) Turn location reporting to high accuracy or device only, or even off.
3) Don't agree to Google location reporting.
4) Turn off Wifi background scanning (Settings, Wifi, Menu->Advanced, Scanning always Available unchecked)
5) I find Wi-Fi optimization off may or may not help.
6) Make sure you get good signal strength. If you need to, downgrade to 3g (EVDO, not HSPA) if Sprint from LTE if the signal is better, or even 2g (edge, not 1x) if T-Mobile.
7) Disable unnecessary syncing for your accounts (Google Play ...).

you bought the wrong phone if you care allot about battery life.
Though what your getting is abnormal, im easily able to get 4 hours screen on time with heavy use

First - disable location reporting (leave location on. I do)
Download this - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice
And make Google play services look like this -

Your battery drain is certainly anomalous. I leave everything on all the time and average 22 hrs up with 5 hrs SOT. As @Zepius said, you need BBS logs to be able to troubleshoot.

Using that disabling app and using common sense you can also scrap off the location calling of other apps that really don't need it -

Thanks for the help guys but I haven't had much better luck, I didn't get a screenshot but today it lasted 9 hours with 1 hour screen on time.. there's definitely something wrong and even after a factory reset it's still not improving.
After running BBS today I got two that showed up as potential culprits.
bam_dmux_wakelock and wlan_rx_wake. Neither of these are linked to a specific app though.
Maybe time to call Google? I went through 4 Nexus 4 devices because of various issues.. maybe I need a second Nexus 5.

why dont you try just stock and see if its different?

I have, stock with my apps is just the same but I doubt it's an app, I have the exact same apps on my Note II (Backup synced from google when I reset the note) and that lasts days..

are you sure its not a badly coded app? the note II is not on kitkat if i remember correctly.
go with stock rom, stock kernel, and minimal apps for the day and see if there's a difference.

you're comparing phones with massively different size batteries.
will you just try what i asked?

Try a different kernel?

Certain routers or network settings can destroy batteries on wifi also. Kinda sounds like that's what your wakelocks could be from.
But yeah....before talking exchange or repair....you really need to reflash a clean stock version.....no installed apps and see how it is. If its an app or a router/network issue, the next phone will be the same.

Boot into safe mode and see if it goes away. That's what Google support would suggest you to try.

[Q] battery life and deep sleep

Recently I've noticed a lot of battery use when the phone is supposed to be asleep. (Rom -- old Vahalla Final). Battery life used to be okay. I ran cpu spy and better battery stats and found out the phone was not going into deep sleep mode at all. Where do I go from here?

Check wakelocks... both partial and kernel. Then look at alarms and network stats...
seems to me that deep sleep is working just fine on my sgs4g.

anyway, let me just say this, screen was off the whole time. the thing that surprises me is i know for a fact that the last time i charged it was more than the time indicated (feb 28th to be exact cause that's when I posted in the proton thread) and i had to turn the phone on to get the screen shot and it was still at 1% before i plugged it in.

under "kernel wakelocks" it says "ste-gps-interface" 93.6 % but I almost never use gps.
then "vbus_present" 19.9%
"synet"3.2%
"powermanagerservice" 1.8 %
"radio-interface" 1.5%
"max8998-charger"0.1%
and the rest are 0%.
so what is "ste-gps-interface"? There are some threads on it. The only time I switch on gps is for this speedometer-radar detector app that I haven't used in months.
partial wakelocks are negligible.
Under alarms I am getting 61 wakeups for Yahoo mail which makes sense as I'm on too many email lists. I've now frozen the Ymail application since I don't want email notifications on my phone anyway. the next highest is 21 wakeups for maps and I don't know why that is.
Sounds like your ROM/kernel's GPS handler is screwed up.
My suggestion would be another flash of your ROM without a wipe, reboot to system, unlock phone and accept any SU request popups, wait 10 minutes, and then if you had a custom kernel reboot to recovery, flash your kernel, reboot to system, wait another 10 minutes... and check Better Battery Stats to see if GPS is still going nuts. If so, you'll probably need to wipe system and just follow those steps again.

I reflashed the rom using CWM after wiping everything but I am still getting the ste-gps-interface wakelock. I'm wondering if reinstalling the system and bootloaders with Odin will do anything. I tried a different modem with no results.

Unchecked everything in settings / location services and see if that makes a difference.
Do you have GPS turned on or off when your getting that wakelock? If it's off turn it on and leave it on.
Maps and GPS rings a bell. Something about maps reporting your location periodically comes out of the dusty portions of my memory. Might want to do an XDA and a Web search on that.
Yep...

Believe that I saw something about Maps still running even when it's frozen, so you actually have to uninstall it.
Ive tried two ics roms and installed proton v2 and it is not deep sleeping. So i always end up reverting to hefe. Can anyone tell me why or confirm this ?

Help finding/fixing idle battery drain

Hi my wife bought a Note 5 two days ago (9/30). She did all setup, app restoring, etc that evening and fully charged the phone overnight. However her phone is experiencing idle drain that I need some help fixing.
Some other info: battery saver modes are off, wifi is always on (but only connected at home), bluetooth is always off.
10/1: Arrived at work with 100% battery
A little over 4 hours later, with light use, the phone was at 51% with less that 45 mins SOT

With facebook as the biggest offender I suggested she turn off the setting of pre-loading pics and videos.
When she got home she charged phone to 100%. I also changed mobile network to CDMA/LTE. Here's how the battery looked with light use before going to bed:
10/2 - Left the phone unplugged over night to see what would happen, it lost 12% sitting on the nightstand for 8 hours.
Will report back later this afternoon to see how the day is progressing.
First step for me in reducing battery drain was to disable the Facebook app. It is a battery hog and was always at the top of my list. Instead, use a browser and create a shortcut to facebook.com or install Metal from the Play Store which is a web wrapper for Facebook and so much lighter. Sometimes I still get strange battery drain from Android system (up to 35% sometimes!). But this usually gets resolved just by opening up recent apps and closing all.
Hmm, I don't have problems with Facebook app on my droid turbo

Some people want notifications.
Regardless, Facebook doesn't seem to be showing up at the top afte the setting change. I'm interested to see what she has this afternoon. Will have some updates screen shots later on. I also asked her to charge ~3pm then drive home with nav on to see what the battery looks like under heavy usage.
I need to dig into Android System to see what's going on there, any ideas? Will GSAM pro give more insight here?

I lied, facebook setting is "play videos automatically", I have to assume turning this off will save data/battery. Also Instagram has "use less data" setting. I thought I read that this stops pre-loading of videos/images, but I might have imagined that?
Anyway, for facebook setting hit the menu button next to the notifications icon then scroll to "App Settings" near the bottom of the screen.
After most of a work day and light use she's down to 58%. Looks like facebook is back up there, odd because it's not a problem on my phone.
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot why Android System is using so much battery?
I have a note 4 and I'm having similar issue ls

You guys have to also take in consideration the Lollipop total connection time bug. Apps open up a connection and it won't close it when it's done... For example my first charge cycle I signed into instagram and it used 40% of my battery without me ever open again. The total connection time of most apps ends up being hours when it shouldn't be. That won't be fixed untill Marshmallow comes to the Note 5. Google is aware and has fixed it. It's on multiple Lollipop devices.

If the device is rooted then you can try Greenify to hibernate the apps which are consuming the battery life.Try other simple solutions like disabling the Wifi and other tools when not using them.Sometimes Play services may cause the issue so try to fix them. There are some guides which may help you http://fixdroidbattery.net/fix-fast-battery-drain-problem-on-samsung-galaxy-note-5/

The problem is ...because of the device used to be root although we flash original stock firmware it is still drain when device idle ...you can take a look in Android OS and see stay awake period ...one way is flash custom room that said deep sleep fix . Hope this comment could deal your problem

No Hotplugging
I used to have the same problem with CM kernel. Turned out when I checked the kernel using kernel auditor, there seems to be no CPU hotplugging features which accounts for the batter drain and the high temps. Try using blue sparks kernel. Its MUCH better for battery and temps.

Yeah shouldn't be disabled in the first place
I'm on the 11/18 nightly and have battery comparable, if not better, than stock. No custom kernels. Bluetooth and wireless always on. GPS always on, device only. Standby excellent. Always used delta gapps. I deny Google data access on what I can (history, location, ect), but let sync on contacts, calendar, keep, ect. No greenify or anything like that. Email sync on auto push.
My use today at 12 hrs (730am-745pm) is 1.5hr screen on time auto brightness and slider in middle, 2 hrs playing audio through bluetooth, in an area with no cell signal for about 4hrs, maybe 30-45 mins talk time between Bluetooth and handset. Still have 75% battery left.
Edit: just checked my wife's phone (on factory firmware), unplugged for about 7 hrs. She has 1 hr 40 min screen on time and down to 77%. Not sure about usage, she might have been streaming videos or something.

Marshmallow and App Data Restoration

This is a simple question, but I'm wondering if the answer is complex...
With Android 5.1 and below, Google backed up Apps, and certain system settings, etc, but NEVER app data itself.
With 6.0, I noticed some apps (depending if they're compatible with google API's) back up and restore app data as well, included with the app restoration.
You may ask, why would this guy not want google to restore app data?
Simple... In my testing for a seperate issue, I ran into a serious wake lock problem. After a full RUU, full wipe, and reinstallation of a Marshmallow ROM on my M8, I am getting constant wakelocks and battery drains after all my apps are restored with their data.
I would like to test to see if it is faulty data possibly restored with an app, but that unfortunately gets restored with Google's App backup now.
Anyone know if there's a way to system wide wipe app data? NOT just the cache? Or just tell Google only to backup Apps and not data?
Thank you!
The answer is simple although it's probably not what you want to hear. Don't let Google restore your apps. Do it the old fashioned way. Start clean and install your apps as you need them.
If you're not willing to do that, I'd suggest using Titanium Backup to restore your apps instead of Google. With TB you can choose to restore apps without the data. If it were me though, I'd just bite the bullet and install them one at a time. Seems to me that in a case like yours, that would be the best way to go.
Make a backup of what you have now with TWRP. Then start fresh. If you figure out what's going on, you could maybe restore the backup and fix what needs fixing on it.

Will try this too. Ill just completely turn off 5 GHZ in my wifi options, just to make sure it doesn't try to connect to any.
I will report back if this helps. Thanks again!
Well, just want to provide an update...
It may not be marshmallow causing this after all. I just did a full clean flash into Viper 4.6.1 (android 5.0.2)
During the day and evening phone was fine. Over night is when the wake locks started happening sporadically. In about 6 hours, dropped about 10%. I checked Wakelock Detector app, and it seems google play services is really pumping out those wakes.
I don't really use bluetooth, I only have 1 device even paired with my phone (my car which disconnects when turned off). But I do keep bluetooth Enabled
I just charged my phone to 100%, turned on Airplane mode + wifi. I'm going to monitor during the day. Is there a way to detect within wakelock detector exactly what part of android is causing this? It doesn't seem like an app itself, because the wakes are coming from android system. Or could an app be causing the google play services wake?

A day before this, I temporarily went back to a 5.0.1/5.0.2 ROM, found out it was an app or two trying to destroy my battery in the background with high GPS usage. After adjusting and fixing, Phone drained normally, maybe like 4% a whole nights of sleep.
Fast forward, I reflash Marshmallow ROM, set it up, and no more wakelocks/excessive battery drain. I charge the phone with my QC2.0 Charger (QC probably isn't enabled anyway in kernel, but didn't make a difference to me) from about 50% to 100% and unplug, and go to sleep.
This morning I woke up to phone at 86%. I check wakelock detector, and power history, nothing out of ordinary. Scratching my head at this point, I restart the phone, and BAM, phone is at 35%.
Some points below
1) I believe it was the first time I charged the phone fully, not sure if that had anything to do with it. I've never needed to calibrate battery in past...
2) Wifi was strictly on 2.4 Ghz. Cellular coverage is good. GPS is on, but not being used.
This sounds like a longshot, but I'm leaning to the kernel probably not supporting QC2.0, and it being detrimental to charging the phone. Possibly ROM thinking it's enabled, but kernel is disabled. So right now I'm charging the phone to 100% using a computer USB port (500mA max) just for testing purposes.
Have anyone ever seen this before?

Horrible Battery Life 2h SOT - Need Kernel or other tweaks advice

Okay, so to make a long story short I have terrible battery life. (See image below)
I don't even game, all this time the only thing I did was listening to music trough my headphones whatsapp, and some low usage of Facebook (Messenger). Nothing special in my eyes.
2h55 min SOT. This is really the worst battery life I ever had on every phone, I have this for a couple of months now already. And I am so done with it.
I am looking for options:
Will a new kernel help me out? If so, which one? I don't like fine tweaking. Just a new kernel that works, no tweaking and that works for battery life. I heard FrancoKernel, or ElementalX is good. But keep in mind I just need a kernel for battery/performance. Not for fine tuning.
I will also install xXx No limits. Is this recommended for my case?
I want to know all of your opinions on this, and with my batttery life in mind. Because I really want to get this fixed, I am getting annoyed so much.. Thanks!

There are really no specials apps installed. Also Battery usage (detailed) doesn't give a lot special.

Nope I am not rooted. I am looking for options what can cause this and preferable without root. I am afraid that root will only will make things worse, while this already really worse.

In the months that you've been dealing with this, have you factory reset your phone?

Yes, its a while ago now. I think it has been 1-2 months ago. But I can remember it didn't make a huge difference. The thing is, I can't reset it because of banking applications and working abroad. (I wont be able to install them again). And I am pretty sure it wont help.
So I am looking for a kernel option or other tweaks..
There's no miracle, a kernel won't help significantly. You just need to track what's draining your battery. Delete ad many apps as possible, deactivate system apps you don't need.
You can try deep clear in the recent apps management and turn off smart boost in the laboratory.
You might have to replace the battery if the other suggestions don't help
Download Accubattery from play store and charge your phone above 80% then check battery heath, i have 86% health and it's pretty good.
Also if you oem unlock bootloader it will wipe everything.
Your doing something wrong.
Tinder much? Or u checking to many IG babes?
Edit: in that case nothing wrong, but something else is wrong (logs plz)
I'm experiencing exactly the same. Idle battery drain is about 1,5% per hour, I hardly get more than 3 hrs of screen on time. I do think it has something to do with the OS, but can't figure out what...
Go in Google settings, location, scan, and check in wifi and Bluetooth are enabled. This combo drains a lot
Airplane mode + Wifi enable.

Thanks!
