Screen Off - Not Locked - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am looking for a feature that I can apply to my Nexus 5. When you call someone and you put the phone up to your ear, the screen turns off but everything else continues on like normal. I would like to be able to toggle this option whenever I want. Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: Nevermind I found the app with a quick 10 minute search. Screen Standby # Root

I'm pretty sure it does this anyway!

Backlight Goes Off in 10 Seconds Using Phone

When I'm on a phone call, the screen backlight goes off after 10 seconds, even though I have Settings->System->Backlight->Battery set to 4 minutes. Even if I'm using another application while on a phone call, the backlight goes out after 10 sec. If I'm not on a phone call, then the backlight seems to obey the systems setting.
FWIW, this is a Touch Cruise, with the 1.25.405.1 WWE ROM, and WM6 18129.0.4.5.
there is nothing wrong with your phone thats normal. but the fix is a registry change. I can not remember what it is but I am sure the answer was in the the big fixes thread somewhere. I keep seeing it in there but keep forgeting to change mine. If I found it i will post it here.
Thanks. I did a search before posting, but didn't find anything.
Check out tweak #38 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355277
This supposedly disables the screen turning off during a call, I haven't tried it myself.
i think it's not a problem at all for me
in fact, it prevents you to ends the call or launch a program if your cheek touch the screen
Yeah doesn't bother me either, it's expected behavior. But to each his own, some people want to turn off that feature.
Fine, it's a feature. How do I turn it off? Tweak #38 extends the time to ~30 seconds, but the display still goes off. That's a real killer if trying to navigate some company's phone menu, or trying to read a reference document while talking.
Well, in S2U2 there's in an option to choose, whether the phone should
turn the screen off during call or not. This option is available seperated
for Battery or Powered device while calling. Maybe this helps. Tested it
and works. Though I hate it, when the screen stays on during call, because
most time when I hang up I recognize, that I started tons of apps with
my fat face So I turned that option back to default for my case.
You may try yourself.

Thanks. Unfortunately, S2U2 has a whole bunch of other features, which means a bunch of added overhead. It also needs a user manual to explain those features and options
So don't use what you don't need (or don't understand).
IMHO, it's worth it...
\HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\EnableFastDormantDisplayDuringCall
change "1" to "0"
I also found out this one:
Using Pocket Toolman2 (v.2.26.36), go to ''Tools''-->''OS Tweaks''
and there is an option to unchek the box ''Allow phone to go to sleep during calls''

Solution:
Go to setting's then look for call settings. In call settings there is a button that turns off and on for proximity sensor, Turn it off and when you're in call the screen won't turn off =D.

Stop screen waking up on notification?

Am I going crazy, or is there no way to stop notifications from waking the screen? Everytime I get any sort of notification, my screen wakes up to display the notification on the lock screen, and then goes back to sleep a second later. I would like to turn this off and it drains battery.

I've noticed this happens to me when I receive an SMS, but nothing else. I don't think this is the default behaviour. Do you have an app installed that maybe does this? LightFlow?
Well I did install Snaplock for a hot second but I've since uninstalled it. Maybe it changed some setting somewhere that I can't find?
Any help for this? It's driving me crazy.

I have tried to find a solution for this, but I haven't been able to. I am guessing it is just unconfigurable behaviour of the Samsung messaging app.
Yep. I installed 8sms and Textra. Both allow you to disable the screen wake. Decided on 8sms for the long haul.
Help
Ok, so I am also irritated by the same issue with the screen waking up every time I get a text. My phone is usually in my pocket, and by trying to take it out to see the text, my camera or dial screen is opened cause I touched it while the screen was on. I have tried downloading Textra, Handcent, and 8sms to use instead, but in every one of those, when I try to send a photo, it fails, and I have dug through all the settings in those apps as well. I can send them on the stock messaging app just fine.
Has anyone found out how to turn the screen wake up off yet, or what am I missing on the other apps that is preventing pictures to send?
The other thing that is bothering me is that in the stock messaging app, it is displaying a call back # on every text I receive. Is there a way to turn this off?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
-Nick
I'm also trying to find the solution to this. G920I with Vodafone Australia.
Did anyone find a resolution to this issue? My phone turns on with every notification, not just sms.
I don't have my phone on me, but check settings > lockscreen and security > Show information or
settings > lockscreen and security > other security settings > notification access
I disabled all lock screen notifications and the screen still turns on randomly. I thought it may have been facebook so I disabled notifications then uninstalled the app with no luck. This problem is very annoying to say the least, when I go for a run I take my phone to stream music etc and can end up taking a few hundred pics of my pocket; lol.
Yeah I've this problem too, samsung didn't include the option to disable it :\
Are you saying there is no way to stop the screen from coming on?
Doesn't look like you can disable it, sadly. Nothing stock in touchwiz that gives that functionality. Or am I wrong? I just searched the entire settings on my phone..

another annoyed user, looking for a solution
The inability to prevent the wake-up is annoying not only because of the instant battery usage, but because when the phone is in pocket it then causes all kinds of mispresses which lead to unintended app openings, changes, and screen staying on much longer. Samsung needs to provide option to disable screen wake on notification.
Samsung we have f#%$*ng RGB LED for notification!
Try the Screen Notifications free app
Try the Screen Notifications free app. I did and meantime it's OK. Looks it may work for the desperate people like we are....

I remember asking about this in a thread a long time. Ago. Good news, (if the other suggested fixes aren't working), I know how to fix this. First, you have to be rooted (naturally). 2nd, install another text app, I just use google's Messenger text app, nice and basic and I like it. Open that app and let it set itself as default or do it manually in settings. That step might not be necessary, but should do it just in case or possibly be left with no text app by accident. Finally, go to system > priv-app > SecMms_Delight-Open > Copy the app which is our stock messaging app and it has the screen wake function built in and paste it somewhere else like a backup folder in the priv-app directory so you know where it goes back to. Delete the app inside the SecMms-Delight-Open directory and reboot. You'll notice the yellow stock messaging app is gone from desktop and app drawer and now when you get a text, no screen wake! :good:
This annoyed me quite a bit because for a living I deliver catering orders and each time I get an order, it sends a text to let me know to check the browser for order info. So I was getting like 12 to 20 texts a day in addition to all the normal texts from friends and family. It was waking a lot!
I wish the build my edge came on was rootable. Sad face for sure. No root, no downgrade, no happy.

Accidentally hitting HOLD button during calls?

I'm noticing that during many of my calls, I apparently hit the HOLD button accidentally with my cheek. My proximity sensor seems to be working fine, and the screen does turn off appropriately when I hold the phone against my face. I'm assuming that at certain angles enough light gets through to the sensor to turn the screen on, and I accidentally hit the button in the corner. Anyone else have this issue? Is there any way to circumvent this? Thanks
Unfortunately i can't help but i am getting the same issue
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
I tried applying different dialer apps and they only serve to change the dialer/contact screens, but the default calling screen containing the HOLD button remains unchanged. I found that using Skype as the default dialer fixes this issue since it uses its own dialing/calling screens, but obviously it's not practical to just rely on Skype. So the problem still remains unresolved.
As an update, someone on Reddit posted a download link to the Google dialer app here at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/themes-apps/app-google-dialer-t3323432
This installs a new dialer, which actually provides a new calling screen as well, fixing the main issue. The default dialer is better in my opinion since it opens up the dial pad immediately while this one doesn't, but this is a good option at this point

even worst than calls is when you press it while watching youtube vids, i wish there was a lock of some sort cuz the music stops paying all the sudden
It's embarrassing when I put my clients on hold and don't realise until they don't respond to me. The cheek hold doesn't result in any audible sound so you can be talking for 20 seconds with the other end on hold. I love the S7 edge but I'm contemplating sending it back. I'll try the Google dialer mentioned above first though
Same issue here. I talk on the phone almost 2 hours a day and this is happening at least 1-2 times in every call! Checked my proximity sensor and it's working as it should.
Any workarounds? Maybe someone can edit the phone.apk and remove this stupid button or disable it? I am against rooting but I will definitely root my phone if there's a fix for this.
Damn, I suffer exactly the same issue! Found this googling for ideas...
Very old thread, but I just wanted to give a suggestion to others with the same issue. I really love the Google Phone dialer app, which actually replaces the calling screen during calls with this app's own screen, so you no longer have the Hold button at such an unfortunate location. If you do choose Google's app, I recommend this specific version: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-phone/google-phone-2-05-07_rc4-release/google-phone-2-05-07_rc4-android-apk-download/
The caller-ID function by Google actually works with this version, whereas the other .apk files floating around do not have this function working properly.
I'm having the same issue and I've installed the Google phone, however as soon as I place the call, the existing on-screen options pop up.
The option to disable the default phone app is greyed out in settings, so unsure on how to resolve.

Finally searched for the answer to this today, after several accidental holds on work calls.
The solution above with Google Phone APK worked for me. I just went to SETTINGS - APPLICATIONS - DEFAULT APPLICATIONS and then under Calling App near the top, changed it from Contacts to Phone. . For some reason, I cannot open the phone app itself (gives an error message) but calls do use the phone app rather than Samsung stock dialer.
Turn off screen!! Most phones allow you to turn screen off without interrupting the call.
Same issue with a galaxy A5 2016
Can't understand why samsung doesn't fix it

Question Quick Launch Gesture

Hey all. I've been trying to use the new Quick Launch gesture (in advanced settings within the Wear app on my phone). I'd really like to use the gesture to quickly activate the flashlight when needed. Unfortunately the triggering Quick Launch with the "knock knock" gesture is hit or miss (mostly miss). Are any of you able to use this successfully and reliably? And, if so, do you have any suggestions or tips on how to consistently execute it? Thanks.
It says that you have to do it within 5 seconds of waking up the screen, maybe it's because of that? I can get it to work almost everytime

I swear I had been keeping that in mind every time and it just wasn't working consistently for me. Just turned it back on and tried again and now it seems to be working every time without fail. Thanks
It will only work right after you're screen turns on (within 5 seconds). It's useful if you need to launch something quick hands free. Best to use directly after your screen turns on from a lift to wake gesture.
It works from time to time for me. I have noticed it does not want to work especially when the battery is below 40%. I need to restart the watch and it starts working again. I also tried turning it off and then on again to see if this helps, but it did not.
