Unable to set ringtones - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I created folder media/audio/ringtones and also notifications, and until now the ringtones in this folder were displayed in Google ringtone settings.
Now something happened and google doesn't show me them. Even with the app "business ringtones" I am not able anymore to set a ringtone.
Something happened, but I don't know what.
Any suggestions?
Thank you!
Matthias

The path is /system/media/audio/ringtones/
After copying your files, you need to chmod it to 644 using terminal or use a file manager to change its permission to rw-r-r and then reboot...
-Flowed from an IceCold Hammerhead!

/sdcard/ringtones/ put your files right here (.mp3 .ogg...) No need to use the system directory.
Then go to Settings > Sound > your new files should be there.

@vin4yak: the folder you say is on system, I ment the folder on sdcard.
And until now it worked very fine, I tried some alternative SMS apps, after I uninstalled them it doesn't work anymore.
@Primokorn: I have files in there, too, but even doesn't show.
I also deleted the cache from Google media storage and rebooted.

Try with other audio files.
Did you disable the media scan option?

I don't think that the media files are all corrupt.
I installed now sdfixtool, stopped and started media scan, cause I didn't know where to do this. But still only the standard ringtones.
Something's wrong here.

Seems I have to make a titanium backup my apps and reset the phone

Try Ringtone Maker: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herman.ringtone&hl=en

I finally reset my phone and it worked for one day.
After one day I had the same problem again. And also I couldn't choose my pictures to send e.g. with WhatsApp or in gallery.
Finally I deleted media data under settings -> apps -> all apps, and after I made a rescan with this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=burrows.apps.sdcard
Until now everything works fine

how do you delete music

Can't find out how to download music off my xoom normally you can hold down on the song and select delete but I can't
Thanks in advance
I used the file transfer tool for the mac.
I'm sure the windows file manager will let you do the same.
Connect to the computer, find the files, poof!
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
You can delete them using a file manager app like root explorer or astro.

i knew you could delete from a PC but in android versions 1.0-2.3 you could do it from your device without a 3rd party app
Yeah, so dumb it won't delete from in the music app. I'm thinking its an oversight for now.
Check out what Motorola says about deleting music....
motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/63221/~/motorola-xoom---using-music#delete
"Delete music files
Click here for information on how to delete files from your Motorola XOOM."
Then it links to itself. About as intuitive as not letting you delete from the music app
I am having an issue getting the music database to update. When I deleted the files using the Android MTP app, the music app still thinks the music is there. When I try to play one of those files, it just gives me an error saying the track cannot be played.
I have tried force stopping, clearing data, and uninstalling updates. I am guessing I need to track down where the database is and remove it? However, I am having trouble locating it.

I use a free app called Rescan Media. I think works by just re-searching for media on your device. Sometimes it helps me with Music/Picture/Media issues like what you are describing.

What if you open the Music app, go to Menu at the top right and click Refresh. (Im not even sure if that option is available unless you are a part of the Google Music beta).... Does that do anything?
I have tried that too...

Hmm, maybe it has something to do with MTP? I just tried downloading a couple songs and then I deleted them with a file manager app, like Root Explorer or Astro. It was still showing in the Music app until I ran the Rescan Media app, and then they disappeared within a minute or 2.
Maybe put the song back on your Xoom and then delete it directly from your device with one of those file manager apps? Are you rooted?
I am not rooted. I havent had any issues before using mtp before. I navigated to my music folder with Astro/File Manager HD/ES File Explorer and they all showed that the folder is empty. The storage section in the settings panel says I have 0 MB of Music. I will try putting music on it when I get home.

Since the folder is empty can you delete the entire folder then? Then rescan. I've had some weird issues with folders sometimes, even when empty.
I found some instructions on another forum for rebuilding the music library (in Froyo) in but that won't work unless you have root access.
I've unrooted mine for now so I cant confirm the steps but Im sure it would be very similar in Honeycomb.
And I'm assuming you tried a plain old reboot...
Yeah the reboot was the second thing I did I already deleted the folder. I was going to wait on rooting until after I sent my xoom in to get my 4G card.

Try this first
Go to settings / apps / all apps
Find music and clear data and force close
Open music and it should rebuild itself. Don't panic if you google account doesn't show up. Just close the music app and reopen it. Is should recognize that you are a google music subscriber and add your cloud music.
If that doesn't work to to settings / applications / all apps and find the media app. Clear data. Then open the gallery or use the media rescan app above to rescan your meida. It might take awhile as it rebuilds all the media files.
The first method should work for you however.

Yeah that was the first thing I tried followed by a reboot. Also, I started playing with it so more and uploaded some of my music to the cloud today. I made some of other music available offline but that media still wouldn't play. I think the local database is conflicting with the online one.

**Edit**
Well I finally got it working. After repeatedly clearing the cache and starting the program, I finally realized that the music app's database was getting updated. I had to remake my "Music" directory and delete it using MTP File Transfer app. The music files were still there, but only as shadows as their former selves. I am guessing that the deletion calls are handled differently in honeycomb? Regardless, the orphaned files are gone now. Thanks for the help guys!

Hm, you check the format of the pictures or the music? Sometimes the gallery or media players don't understand some formats.
My pics are jpg and music mp3. Should be read. Thanks for responding.

you tried quickpic and it didnt work?? what i would suggest is removing the sd card from your phone. then saving all of the media (media only!) on the computer. format the sd card on the computer (fat32). then put the sd card back in your phone. format it on the phone. then connect the phone to the computer and copy all of the media back onto it. reboot recovery. clear cache and fix permissions and see if it works.
Thats the thing. It does work with quickpic. And poweramp plays fine. Gallery is useless. Lot of other players wont read mp3. Have reformatted in past on PC too.

go into cwm and fix permissions.
Done that. Doesn't matter which rom I use also. Thanks.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
then you are doing something wrong. if quickpic can see the pictures, then it is not a hardware problem. go to setting and manage applications and clear all data, cache and updates to the gallery. then go back and fix permissions.

Did all that and still not working. Took couple of pics and they came out in gallery. Restarted phone and now they cant be found. In quickpic I have to show all hidden for them to show. Might be something about the tags. Don't know.

this one is perplexing. can you try to switch the apk with one from another rom and see if that works?

Is there supposed to be a nomedia file in that folder. Dcim/camera etc. I dont have one.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I'm running Valhalla 1.3.2 and my folder is /DCIM/camera.
**EDIT**
I also have a thumbnails folder in /DCIM
I hope this helps and you resolve your problem.
Dude same was happening with just check your SD Card for errors from your PC...My problem was fixed after this no need to format or change your ROM just check for the errors from your PC.

Duplicate folders showing in music player

Ok, quick question, I have duplicate folders showing in my music player, I've looked to see if there actually are duplicates, which there are not but in the location details of the folder both are pointing to the same place, just saying it different... mnt/sdcard/....
sdcard/....
I don't have an external sdcard installed at the moment, for some reason my phone wont read it and says it can't recognize the file system.... how do i fix the duplicate folders issue? And if anyone has any comments on the ext sdcard issue, they're more than welcome share... thanks.

You should be able to fix it if you wipe data for media storage.
That wont erase my music, right?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
No.
Also could be 'media bug'. CM9 and SlimICS don't have it.
Those cached items can be a pain. I had mine after deleting images and leaving thumbnails.
Cleared the data from media storage, and rebooted my phone, duplicate folders were gone but so were all my playlists... restored them with mybackup pro and rebooted only to find it not only restored the playlists but the duplicate folders were back... going to try it again this time without restoring the playlists and see if the dups stay gone... will update.

Media Scanning & .nomedia

First my battery died.
Then I powered back up.
Only to find all galleries contained nothing.
Sdcard was healthy, all files in tact.
Reboot / remount / rescan all didn't work.
Accidentally deleted all .nomedia files with a single click.
What fixed my galleries and playlist was clearing cache & fixing permissions from recovery.
Back to the bit where I deleted all .nomedia files.
I have readded .nomedia files to applicable folders using a third party app purely for convenience.
All folders in android/data are still showing up in 'choose image' dialogs.
Basically every app I have installed comes up as a gallery folder for its icon.
I've set my media gallery to hide these folders, but for choosing files from other apps its a bit annoying having to scroll through so many pseudo albums.
Any suggestions, or ideas why the nomedia files aren't doing their job anymore?

You need to rescan media again, if you haven't already, for it to pick up those .nomedia files.

Notifications and Ringtones not showing

So I started playing with different roms and and mods. Currently on Kangakat.
Problem is I have a ton of notifications and ringtones I kept from my last device and dumped into the Zedge Folder.
Thing is , Zedge doest not see them, neither does the media storage.
Only way I can get to use my ringtones is while using ES file explorer to add them 1 by 1 . After they are selected once they start showing up in the media storage.
Wouldnt mind it too much but Chomp SMS uses by default media storage and it is alot of job to reclick every single file 1 by 1 every time I flash a rom.
I used SD rescan on previous devices but not available on 4.4
Anyone has the same issues and had a fix ?
No one???

Did you check permissions on the media files? You may have to adjust them and reboot.
