Notifications and Ringtones not showing - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I started playing with different roms and and mods. Currently on Kangakat.
Problem is I have a ton of notifications and ringtones I kept from my last device and dumped into the Zedge Folder.
Thing is , Zedge doest not see them, neither does the media storage.
Only way I can get to use my ringtones is while using ES file explorer to add them 1 by 1 . After they are selected once they start showing up in the media storage.
Wouldnt mind it too much but Chomp SMS uses by default media storage and it is alot of job to reclick every single file 1 by 1 every time I flash a rom.
I used SD rescan on previous devices but not available on 4.4
Anyone has the same issues and had a fix ?

No one???

Did you check permissions on the media files? You may have to adjust them and reboot.

how do you delete music

Can't find out how to download music off my xoom normally you can hold down on the song and select delete but I can't
Thanks in advance
I used the file transfer tool for the mac.
I'm sure the windows file manager will let you do the same.
Connect to the computer, find the files, poof!

You can delete them using a file manager app like root explorer or astro.

i knew you could delete from a PC but in android versions 1.0-2.3 you could do it from your device without a 3rd party app
Yeah, so dumb it won't delete from in the music app. I'm thinking its an oversight for now.
Check out what Motorola says about deleting music....
motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/63221/~/motorola-xoom---using-music#delete
"Delete music files
Click here for information on how to delete files from your Motorola XOOM."
Then it links to itself. About as intuitive as not letting you delete from the music app
I am having an issue getting the music database to update. When I deleted the files using the Android MTP app, the music app still thinks the music is there. When I try to play one of those files, it just gives me an error saying the track cannot be played.
I have tried force stopping, clearing data, and uninstalling updates. I am guessing I need to track down where the database is and remove it? However, I am having trouble locating it.

I use a free app called Rescan Media. I think works by just re-searching for media on your device. Sometimes it helps me with Music/Picture/Media issues like what you are describing.

What if you open the Music app, go to Menu at the top right and click Refresh. (Im not even sure if that option is available unless you are a part of the Google Music beta).... Does that do anything?
I have tried that too...

Hmm, maybe it has something to do with MTP? I just tried downloading a couple songs and then I deleted them with a file manager app, like Root Explorer or Astro. It was still showing in the Music app until I ran the Rescan Media app, and then they disappeared within a minute or 2.
Maybe put the song back on your Xoom and then delete it directly from your device with one of those file manager apps? Are you rooted?
I am not rooted. I havent had any issues before using mtp before. I navigated to my music folder with Astro/File Manager HD/ES File Explorer and they all showed that the folder is empty. The storage section in the settings panel says I have 0 MB of Music. I will try putting music on it when I get home.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Since the folder is empty can you delete the entire folder then? Then rescan. I've had some weird issues with folders sometimes, even when empty.
I found some instructions on another forum for rebuilding the music library (in Froyo) in but that won't work unless you have root access.
I've unrooted mine for now so I cant confirm the steps but Im sure it would be very similar in Honeycomb.
And I'm assuming you tried a plain old reboot...
Yeah the reboot was the second thing I did I already deleted the folder. I was going to wait on rooting until after I sent my xoom in to get my 4G card.

Try this first
Go to settings / apps / all apps
Find music and clear data and force close
Open music and it should rebuild itself. Don't panic if you google account doesn't show up. Just close the music app and reopen it. Is should recognize that you are a google music subscriber and add your cloud music.
If that doesn't work to to settings / applications / all apps and find the media app. Clear data. Then open the gallery or use the media rescan app above to rescan your meida. It might take awhile as it rebuilds all the media files.
The first method should work for you however.

Yeah that was the first thing I tried followed by a reboot. Also, I started playing with it so more and uploaded some of my music to the cloud today. I made some of other music available offline but that media still wouldn't play. I think the local database is conflicting with the online one.

**Edit**
Well I finally got it working. After repeatedly clearing the cache and starting the program, I finally realized that the music app's database was getting updated. I had to remake my "Music" directory and delete it using MTP File Transfer app. The music files were still there, but only as shadows as their former selves. I am guessing that the deletion calls are handled differently in honeycomb? Regardless, the orphaned files are gone now. Thanks for the help guys!

[Q] Can't use mp3 as ringtone/alarm anymore???

I just noticed that I can no longer assign my music as my alarm or ringtone as I used to. I recently installed the new Google Music app and thought that might be the problem so I uninstalled the update and went back to the stock music player. Didn't fix the problem.
Read that a file called .nomedia could be the problem, so I looked on the SD card using ES file explorer and didn't find a file by that name anywhere.
Can anyone please tell me how to fix this and what likely caused it? My phone is not rooted.

yeah I noticed the function is missing, can still do it via 3rd party music players though.
I liked the control I had before and I don't want any third party music players. What I can't figure out is why I can't set my own music as my alarms or ringtones anymore. All that show up are the Android System ringtones/alarms.
There must be some way to revert back to the way it was. If it was the update to the music app, uninstalling the updates should have fixed it, correct?
Like I said above, I read that this can be caused by a ".nomedia" file in the root of the SD card. Deleting the file fixed this problem for most users. I searched using ES file explorer and can't find this file present in my SD card. Do I need root access to find this file and delete it? Or has something else caused this change on my phone? the 2.3.4 update?
I thought the idea behind the Nexus is leave the user in control, why this stupid step backwards?

I actually have the newest version of google music installed as well because I am in the google music beta program, but I haven't encountered this problem. I use a free little app called Ringtone Maker to cut and use mp3s for ringers and alarms and it still works fine. Maybe that can be a workaround for you if doing it manually isn't working.
what version of Android are you running? is this something in 2.3.4 update perhaps?
I have ringdroid installed as well so I could create custom ringtones and work around this but they don't show up in my clock app. I prefer to just pick any of my music that I want to when I'm setting alarm in the clock app but all of the sudden I can no longer choose my own music.
When setting an alarm I click "ringtone" a popup window used to appear with the options "complete action using -Android system or -music" and it has a check box to make my selection the default action. The music option is now gone. WTF????

Default apps

When I want to change my ring tones, the list of apps that pop up to handle the ringtones is the "android system", "handcent" and "zedge". Neither shows me a list of all audio files, which include my ringtones. The option of media player or something to that effect, did populate the list and did allow me to browse media files. What I am looking for is a way to modify that pop up list to add media player to it, as it is right now, I'm limited to the os's option of media files.
The xda search app doesn't seem to handle search queries very well, or perhaps I do not know how to use the search function. But my results were not even close to being relevant.

Not really looked much but i think some people had to put the custom ringtones in the system folder were the default ones are, don't know were that is, but that was right after the phone came out.
You could always try a market app like ringdroid or something should work
I dont know if this is what you are looking for, but if you use an external sd card, the best way to do custom ringtones is to create two folders on the ext sd card - one called ringtones, and one called notifications. any mp3 or sound files that go into those folders will show up in the list of files when you try to change ringtones and notification tones. and the file sizr doesn't matter. I use full mp3 files for my ringtones.

Adding custom notification tones / ringtones / alarms

On my nexus 4 I could create new directories ("Ringtones","Notifications", "Alarms") on my virtual sd card and place tones in there. Then the preference lists for choosing these notification types showed the extra tones.
On the nexus 5 this doesn't seem to happen. Does anyone know of a different way to do this?

I'm getting files show in the preference lists up from /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones - however they're just playing a "bong" noise, not the actual mp3.

Not working for me either on n4, n5, or the n7 with stock Rom. Worked fine when I used aokp.
The only way I can get it to sort of work now is use rings extended then select es file explorer and naturally navigate to the file. Then it plays fine. They just won't show up to preview them the way it normal did.
It does work I put them in the system audio notification ect folder, but I'm trying too avoid messing with system for the first time.

I got it working. Very frustrating. Initially what i did was download all my notifications and such from dropbox directly to my phone and put them in the correct folders. Rebooted ect and it didn't work. I was told to try plugging my phone into the computer and moving the folders and around and back into the right folder. Then I disconnected from computer then they showed up. I wonder if the media scan isn't working unless you unplug USB? IDK, but it works now.
Sounds silly, but try it.

If the device rooted, you can move the files the /system/media/audio/ringtones, notifications etc. folder. Work like charm!

On my Nexus 4 I had my ringtones in /sdcard/Ringtones and that doesn't work with the Nexus 5. I also tried /sdcard/media/Ringtones and that didn't work either. In both cases I even tried rebooting the phone after putting the mp3 files to hopefully trigger a media scan.
So what would the correct location be?
Thanks in advance,
Bernhard

Now I'm wondering, if it's a problem with the mp3 format of my ringtones. Could you please do me a favor and see, if the ringtone in the attached zip file works for you, when you put it in /sdcard/Ringtones .
Thanks so much,

i downloaded it, AirDroided the mp3 to my phone (default is storage/emulated/0) /notifications, and selected it as my Hangouts sms tone...sent an sms to myself, turned off the screen, and bazinga, it works
when you say /sdcard, do you mean you made that directory via pc, or are you referring to ESFileExplorer (or the like) reporting the directory as /sdcard? on Nexii, '/sdcard' just points to storage/emulated/0 [i think it's something called a simlink, but i don't know what that is]
Works for for me... I use ASTRO File Manager
Notification MP3 went into SD Card > Media > Audio > Notification
Ringtone MP3 went into SD CARD > Ringtone

I am referring to the way ES FileExplorer reports it, so /sdcard/Ringtones is in fact /storage/emulated/0/Ringtones.
Could you please try it with putting it into /sdcard/Ringtones as well and see, if Media Storage shows it as a Ringtone.
No idea, why this doesn't work for me, when it works for others.

sorry mate, I'm not doing it again, the result is going to be exactly the same
After some testing I can confirm this on a NON-ROOTED Nexus 5.
You can place notification sound files in either of these two locations, they work equally well. Note that this post, unlike many is typed with care and shows the EXACT path names from root with proper capitalization. I did not try all the bastardizations but case and plural/singular actually matter a lot of times.
/sdcard/Notifications (/storage/emulated/0/Notifications)
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications (/storage/emulated/0/media/audio/notifications)
HOW-EVER-ER...
You must move at least 1 file to the directory from your PC before ANYTHING will show up. It seems, and stands to reason, as others noted that moving from the PC while attached as a media device causes Android to rescan the directories. I did not test if you only need to move 1 file on the whole file system or if you have to do it per directory. But by moving one file out and back FROM THE PC all files in those directories became visible in notification pick lists.
I also rebooted after moving the files around. I probably should have checked before since it may not be necessary. But I am so accustomed to rebooting I forgot to test that.
Hope this clears things up.

hey I got the same problem as you
The ringtone is not being picked default media storage and even it picked in some cases im getting the bong sound
so here is the work around
dont use the media storage as default ringtone picker .if you already did that ..go to settings->apps->all apps->media storage and clear defaults of it
then go to settings ->sounds->ringtone and use esfile explorer in this case ..select the ringtone you got using the file browser then it works
another file manager
as said some posts before i suggest to use another file manager than the stock one, it worked for me
I pluged the phone into the computer USB. Cpoied the ringtone of my choice to the ringtone folder. Did the same with the notification ringtone. Go and select the file in Settings...Sound. Mine were .ogg files
Once you install the sound files in the various locations on the sdcard, such as /sdcard/Ringtones, you can update media storage by doing either of the following:
Go to settings -> apps -> all -> media storage and clear data, then reboot
Or
Use the app ScanMedia to update

Unable to set ringtones

Hello,
I created folder media/audio/ringtones and also notifications, and until now the ringtones in this folder were displayed in Google ringtone settings.
Now something happened and google doesn't show me them. Even with the app "business ringtones" I am not able anymore to set a ringtone.
Something happened, but I don't know what.
Any suggestions?
Thank you!

The path is /system/media/audio/ringtones/
After copying your files, you need to chmod it to 644 using terminal or use a file manager to change its permission to rw-r-r and then reboot...
-Flowed from an IceCold Hammerhead!
/sdcard/ringtones/ put your files right here (.mp3 .ogg...) No need to use the system directory.
Then go to Settings > Sound > your new files should be there.
@vin4yak: the folder you say is on system, I ment the folder on sdcard.
And until now it worked very fine, I tried some alternative SMS apps, after I uninstalled them it doesn't work anymore.
@Primokorn: I have files in there, too, but even doesn't show.

Try with other audio files.
Did you disable the media scan option?
I don't think that the media files are all corrupt.
I installed now sdfixtool, stopped and started media scan, cause I didn't know where to do this. But still only the standard ringtones.
Something's wrong here.
