Horizontal lines in blue and gray areas - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Two weeks ago, I bought the Moto G. It is a great device. However I made a strange discovery.
When the brightness is high, there seem to be horizontal lines in blue and gray colors like the
facebook icon. You need to look very close to see them. When I looked at the display with a
magnifieng glass, every second line of pixels where in a lighter colour as the others.
All images are very sharp.but still the pixel-lines can be made out. If this is normal, then I will
live with this.
Thanks for any information

That doesn't sound normal. Could you take a close up picture of the affected area? Anyways I would definitely request a replacement.

I just found a thread including a picture which exactly describes the issue.https://www.google.com/url?q=http:/...ds-cse&usg=AFQjCNGaI4cLfsNaFK0vygdf_32mc49XyA

I tried to reproduce that image for you on my moto g with the Facebook icon and this is what it looks like

As you can see it doesn't very similar to the picture that user you linked posted, so I do think there's a defect in your screen.

Thanks for the fast reply. My picture however is only an example for the effect. When I zoom into your picture, I can also see the horizontal lines in the screen. Especially in the right sie oft the Google search bar and in the battery Symbol. The whole screen is made out of horizontal pixel lines. So I presume that all moto g will be like that. But I am suprised that I can See the lines with my bare eye in a HD screen.

Hi,
today I received my cristal clear screen protector. As soon as it was on the screen, the issue with the horizontal lines nearly vanished.
I don`t know why that happend but a screen protector solved it for me.

I've noticed the exact same issue on my MOTO G.
And i'm very surpised to see horizontal lines on an HD screen. I have also a Sony Xperia Neo V with much lower pixel density (265 i think) and it's very crisp and smooth with no lines at all..
My wife has also the same issue on her MOTO G.
It's present only horizontally and when you look the screen in a slight angle upwards..No downwards. When i change screen orientation to landscape the 'lines' are always there.. but now vertical.
They are present in the 1280 side and not in the 720. i think that every second pixel line is white.. Like i have 640 pixels only. That's happening in solid colors background and especially in grey, blue and green colors (like in the green message icon, or most noticabely in the grey keyboard buttons and in the battery icon on the status bar).
That's very strange and i don't know if i'm going my phone to the service because maybe they think that i'm too weird looking for such small things with a very nice handset by any other means..
Thank you very much and sorry for my bad english

Got a Problem with the screen (Very Unhappy)

Hello all, i have myself an 02 XDA Exec, but during the light of a soft reset
the screen is now working with fault
it looks like there is some sort of high contrast or the in could be bleading on the inside, but the touch feature works, will display pictures
Notice how the screen has different shades, but also patches in the corners of the screen, as ive mentioned the touch sensetivity works fine but the screen looks to be a bit pixelated and and in a different sort of contrast (i am currently reading up on the dis-assembly of it so if its something internal please say something about it)
and no i havnt banged it, smashed it, tried beating it up etc, i honestly dont know whats happened to it.

this is my today screen after a hard reset, basic windows mobile default, look at the different tones of colouring, the sort of slashes across the screen and the shades in the corner of the screen, and im not sure why, although i dont think it really can be ink bleading as when the phone is turned off the screen is as it should be, just off.
Now i will try out the camera on both sides, from the phone and from my camera
Camera's Side
Notice how the screen is in a sort of negative/contrasted style, not one im enjoying thats for sure, but coming from the phone the results are different
Exec Camera
notice how the camera still processes the image properly
which leads me to believe something is wrong with the screen
maybe some part of the frame is being pressed against it or something like that
i will be monitoring this thread closely and please help
With Many Thanks
Exemike
Does it have this pink tint in reality too? (not only on the shots?)
If it does (and a hard reset doesn't help), then, one of the color transfer wires may be dead or have "only" developed a contact error (or, plainly, they have just been removed from their socket. This happened a lot with other models.)
That is, I'm pretty much sure it's a cheaply fixable problem. Try disassembling your casing and try to rearrange the wires.
pink/purple tint, but the screen apears in perfect shape
any guides on getting into the screen,
thanks very much.

there are several; see the "smashed my Universal screen" threads; some of them link in the official HTC disassembling guides

Display burn-in?

This G Tablet is just out of the box, but appears to have some type of "burn in" that shows up one certain colored backgrounds. I noticed it first in the background of the application Tweetdeck, but the attached image is with the plain background using the free application called "Dead Pixel Test". It was a little tricky to capture with the camera, but there is an outline about 1/2 an inch all the way around the screen with rounded corners and on the left side it it juts out to a point sort of like a "speech bubble" from a comic. This is the third display color of Dead Pixel Test, "light grey". I didn't see it with any other colors in that program, but depending on what colors are in the background in other applications, this outline may appear.
Could anyone else confirm if their display has this issue? This unit is new, so I'm not sure how it would have any burn in like this, so maybe all displays have this, or maybe it's just a display defect on my unit.

I ran the dead pixel test and it didn't have any issues like your pic. If you bought in a store bring it back and show them the test and have them run the same test on an in store display model.
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
Definitley bring it back. Better to have peace of mind than to worry about it.
Scott
Thanks for the confirmation. It didn't look right and now it does sound like it's just a problem with this particular unit I have. I am going to take it into the store as you suggested.
LCD panels can experience retained images, but it's far less likely to be permanent than the phosphor damage seen on CRT tubes and plasma displays. The new OLED panels will probably be bad for this as well. Set a pure white background for a few hours at low brightness to keep the temperature down (with no icons) then see if your pixel test shows any difference. If the image is really permanently retained out of the box my guess would be that it was probably a test result screen from the factory.
Good reminder for the rest of us that screen savers/timeouts are important!

Uneven screens?

I want to get this phone, but I've been hearing of uneven screens on the net. People have been saying the bottom of their screens are popping up. has this happened to anyone?
and also, in this picture,

Is the fact that you can see the light from the bottom of the screen mean that the screen is uneven?

some people have this issue but im not sure if its as severe as in the image...
but mine seems to have a perfect screen
I think I'm having this issue.. where have you read about this?
I'm not sure about this problem, but I noticed that mostly users with Desire S from Asia have the screen popping issue. UK Desires seem to be fine.
From Asia here but no problem with the screen. I think it's random.
No screen mounting issues here on german Desire S.
On the picture it's a reflection on the metal edge.
Hi my first post on XDA but have been skulking about.
I'm in the UK and have had my DS 3 full days perfect no floors and set up with current OS and skinned.
Though day 4 bottom corners lifting by Home and Search keys and also have the smallest gap between unibody and screen near Volume rocker and touch keys, the gap is enough to see back light coming through in the dark/dusk.
Hope this helps i have a new replacement coming first thing tomorrow will report on that with any news.
Ok so brand new replacement handset and i still have these issues the bottom right corner is already showing that it's raised in comparison to the bottom left corner and there is still a visible gap on the left of the screen can see the charge port through this and light still shining through in the right light.
Looks like bad quality control from HTC will be contacting orange in a mo as i'm still in my cooling off period. I am really disappointed Android OS is great for the customisation but this handset seem's to have been rushed in the build quality.
Hope this helps.
I have a friend with this issue.Mine it's ok.
Greece.
Duplicate post sorry.

Screen quality???

I just got my Nexus 5 in the mail and have some questions about its screen
First, what's the material used for the screen?
Second, is anyone having some serious yeloow hue going on with their screens????
I own both the Z1 and the N5 now and will decide to sell one off in the near future. The Z1 was notorious for their yellow hue screen and comparing the N5 side to side with the Z1 the N5 is even worse when it comes to the yellow hue. Can anyone else confirm?
Want to post a side by side comparison pic but the only cameras I own are on the phones haha

Do a search on the forum, there are a number of threads about the yellow tint. Some N5s have it, some don't.

Finally got around to taking a photo with my friend's 5S
On the left is the N5 and Z1 on the right.
The yellow hue is definately more noticable when viewing screens with slight hints of blue
The comparison of both white screens came out decent in the photo with slight yellow on the N5 but in person it's much worse. (keep in mind my Z1 already has a yellow hue problem)
Definately feel like my N5 has serious screen issues I will contact Google and see what they have to say

Yes, it's very difficult to photograph the issue because the device used to make the photos has its own impact. I've found that you can take whatever the photo shows and multiply it by a few times to get a real indication of the difference.

Can't see the picture but I might know what you talking about.
My F2 has also vertical "spots" in low light/dark conditions when there also dark content displayed on the screen.
I think it is normal for OLED Screens, although I must say it is quite visible on the Poco f2.

Thanks for your reply
Yes it appears in dark condition specialy on grey, dark grey color and a lot of apps using it in dark mode so it's normal no need to change the phone

Yes exactly. I must admit it is quite irritating seeing those at first; these "shadow lines" are especially more prominent when the DC dimming feature is activated.
I had those on every phone with OLED Screens (Galaxy S, S2, S3 etc. you name it) and also on the OnePlus 6.
I assume OLED Screens are not perfectly balanced out regarding their illumination strength or there are slight impurities/imperfections in the panel, since these are organic light emitting diodes. But I don't really know why these lines appear especially in low light conditions.
Other than that it does not bug me much (anymore) since in most use cases the lines/shadows are not visible.
