After several long calls with Verizon and help from Motorola insiders, I have been given to understand that:
1. Droid Maxx if not activated on Verizon, before leaving US, cannot be used on other carriers (say in Europe or Asia).
The reason is the SIM unlock cannot be done by the customer support since they won't see the device in their network if it is not activated first.
2. The activation cannot happen outside US, since Verizon does not have a network.
So bottom line is get the device activated before you import it from US.
Now, my Droid Maxx is locked to Verizon. I know the boot loader can be unlocked. Will this help me in flashing something that can get rid of the SIM lock that Verizon has in place.
My device is an employee edition so perhaps there was some extra protection added there by Verizon.
Please help.
I do not have a Maxx, but I'm replying because you PM'd me asking to take a look at this thread..
It has been my experience that Verizon's 4GLte phones are sim unlocked (on the GSM side) out of the box. I thought that was a condition of VZW's 700Mhz spectrum auction win? One potential issue is does the phone support the needed bands out of the box (think Bionic where a hack was needed to enable bands needed for T-mobile).
That being said, if your Maxx is truly SIM LOCKED, then unlocking the bootloader wont help you SIM unlock, nor will flashing a 3rd party Rom after unlocking the bootloader.
where are you located, and who is your carrier? Do they use CDMA for voice, or GSM? What happens when you put a non-VZW sim in the phone?

Thanks Mark.
The phone Droid Maxx does support these bands since there are others who are using the same phone on GSM networks in the country.
The networks in India are:
2G capabilities GSM 900, GSM 1800
3G capabilities UMTS 2100
4G capabilities LTE 2300 (this one won't work with the phone, plus my carrier does not have it either)
The CDMA is CDMA 2000 - but I have not been able to try with a CDMA SIM, but that one has a higher probability of working.
When I put a non-VZ SIM, and set to Global mode, it does not detect any signal and the search network does pretty much nothing. The automatic mode tries to connect but then throws an error saying "can't connect to this network at this time"
I am using a brand new nano SIM card (which now is back in my Moto Defy with an adapter.)
Earlier I had a normal SIM converted to a nano SIM and that one did not work, but after I put in APN manually, I was able to access data.
I tried another user's cut-nano SIM and that one worked for data out of the box (another GSM provider).
Ditto for me, but I am using DroidMini... I also have DroidMAXX which is working great (even unlocked its BL and rooted it)...
I am also from India... Using it in GSM networks... I may get one Nano CDMA SIM to test later and will report here for sure...
Thanks...

Well, we have interacted on Rimweb recently.
The radio on the Droid series is the same. The difference between the mini and the maxx in your case is that the mini has never been activated on VZ network and hence it is SIM locked. Whereas, the Maxx would have been purchased as a used item (perhaps just activated and then sold off?). So that takes care of the SIM unlock part.
Yesterday I spend around 60 minutes with global support, VZ.
I escalated the issue to the supervisor.
He checked and said that the IMEI is clean and not in any sort of negative list. So there is nothing else that they can do.
He also said, the phones are unlocked by default for global use.
Obviously they don't want to dig deeper into why three phones are not working on GSM in India.
I am now running out of avenues. Does anyone have some debugging tool which can log what is happening when the phone tries to log on to the network?

The current Droid Maxx that Verizon sells supports the following..
LTE Band 13/4 700/1700
EDGE/GSM: 850/900/1800/1900,
HSPA/UMTS: 850/900/1900/2100 (download speeds to 42.2 Mbps, upload speeds to 5.76 Mbps
From what you listed, the Maxx should get GSM/Edge/HSPA/UMTS coverage there. And of course, no LTE.
The CDMA side of the Verizon phones is still "locked" so I also would not expect CDMA to work. In other words, if your carrier NEEDS CDMA, stop trying.

I've been through this with some trying the Moto X in India, and I've been through it while trying my T-Mobile and ATT sim's in my Verizon Moto X.
From what you are describing, it sounds like your APN settings for your carrier on the phone are not set right.
Example... When I put my T-Mobile SIM into my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, I get "unknown sim" and bars, but no network connectivity. Nothing works. By going into the mobile network settings on the phone and adding an APN with the T-Mobile settings, features like calling, SMS, data, etc. start working. I have had occasions where I thought I had the APN right, as calls and data worked, but MMS only partially worked (would send but not receive). When I do have the settings right, everything works. Similar thing happens on my Moto X with T-Mobile SIM.

Unless you have an active account with Verizon, and are trying to use their service when traveling, Verizon wont help you. In other words, unless you are trying to get your Verizon phone, working on Verizon's Global Roaming service, on your currently active Verizon account, they wont help you.
Even if you are a Verizon customer who is just traveling and popped out your VZW SIM in favor of using a local prepay sim to save data/voice costs, once you pop that VZW SIM out, they wont assist.
But you have received confirmation of what I said.. the GSM side is unlocked.
The SIM you are trying to use is from a GSM India carrier? As long as they only use GSM (no CDMA required), your only hope will be working with them. Telling them your phone is SIM Unlocked and going from there. Or finding a local message board for the carrier, and hope people are discussing use of "3rd party" phones, and you might get some help there.
I really think it will come down to the APN settings for the GSM carrier not being correct on the Maxx.
I can't offer any more than that. Sorry.

I have now put in a CDMA SIM card, but run into another problem with that. I will activate that SIM on another phone and then pop it in the Maxx again and check. But CDMA should work fine as reported by other users.
But the problem is the GSM part, because that is what we need to get working.

That is bad on the part of Verizon. I have purchased a Verizon device off-contract and that device is a global one. So I am entitled to some support from them even if I am without a service plan.

Yes. Local carrier. And for now, there are three such XDA members who have been facing the same issue. In one case, a member was able to make calls and receive calls and also use data. Then after a few minutes, the SIM invalid message popped up.
I really think it will come down to the APN settings for the GSM carrier not being correct on the Maxx.

APN settings are pretty easy. I did that with my earlier SIM and I got data working. There was no voice, so I gave that SIM back to the carrier and got a brand new nano SIM. Now, nothing works. The old and new SIM are for the same number and same service provider.

Right, you got just DATA working with the APN settings, but the correct APN settings are also needed for SMS, MMS, Phone calls, etc.
I've had an issue where I had voice but no data, and it was related to APN. I've had an issue where I had voice, SMS, data but no MMS, again, it was related to APN settings for the carrier you are using.
So good luck!
the problem we sorted out to get gsm working in india first the phone must be activated on usa to get it work on india so can anyone help us > @s_u_n
So, after using the phone for a week on GSM with all application updates installed, I can safely state that
1. Verizon activation is not needed for non-VZ networks to work (at least outside US).
2. A full FXZ was installed and it probably solved the modem configuration mess that the phone might have been. Perhaps it unlocked something?
3. Four corner activation bypass method was used (as described in earlier Motorola phones).
Either 2 or 3 solved the problem
There was nothing to do with APN. Data works even without any APN settings out here, just like on my Motorola Defy.

Ok, so a little background...
I have a Motorola Atrix 4g (Live in the US). It is on AT&T.
I have a Verizon Wireless 4G Sim Card (I want to use this instead, as I don't pay for this one).
What I've done so far:
Unlocked the phone with a 3rd party code (it said successful)
Rooted Atrix 4G
Installed an unknown sources fix (to add the ability to install unknown sources)
Installed GingerBlur Rom
Basically what is happening is this:
I put the AT&T Sim in and everything works fine.
I put the Verizon Sim in and I get no signal for 3g/4g/edge/whatever or phone.
I'm assuming I have to change the APN (but I have no idea how to do this, what screen it's on, etc...)
I'm assuming the reason I can't get connected is I can't access a temp network to do a *228 and activate the verizon service on the phone.
Any suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank yoU!

As far as I understand, you have a phone which is supposed to work with GSM (AT&t), whereas you are trying to use it on CDMA (Verizion).
These two service providers use two different technologies to deliver their services, and these technologies require different types of handsets(GSM receiver for AT&T, CDMA receiver for Verizon).
So this is the reason you are not getting the signals for Verizon in an AT&T phone!!

Well that blows I was under the impression that the new Verizon Wireless 4G SIMS were GSM? Also the Atrix is supposed to be quad band, doesn't that mean it does it all?
Well that does shine some light on it for sure, I was getting two companies when I did a search for networks (Tmobile and AT&T).
Thank you very much for the response
Ok, so I've searched all over and haven't had much luck. I have no experience with cdma phones, as t mobile is all I've ever had.
I was given a new US Cellular HTC Hero s. I opened it up and saw the sim slot and though, sweet I can replace my sensation with it (I smashed the screen pretty bad). Well, that was a no go, as the phone is cdma. Looking online though, I see it can run in gsm (options global mode, cdma mode, gsm / umts mode. I unlocked the bootloader using the htc site (not sure it matters) and popped in my sim card again, and tried both global and gsm mode, though neither got signal or would dial out. (under networks, it had the tmo apn info.)
So, is the GSM mode offered on this phone only for non US bands? Would a custom rom (now or down the road) allow it to work on tmo? I read something about the HTC Merge and someone being able to switch out the modem in the rom that allowed it to work in the US, but that is well beyond me. I can follow instructions, work ADB and flash roms.. but thats about it.
Is it possible, or will it soon be, to have this phone work on GSM or am I just stuck trying to sell it as a us cellular phone (or perhaps another cdma carrier.. like I said, I don't know anything about cdma)
As a Canadian I'm not sure about who owns US cellular or if they are their own company but I'm guessing they work like Verizon world phones. They have sim card slots but will work only outside of the US. If those verizon phones are used within the States, they will only pick up Verizon's frequency, as opposed to T-Mobile or AT&T where you can unlock them and use them with any GSM carrier within the States. But yeah, you can unlock it and it will work with any GSM carrier outside the States but within the States I think it will only work under US Cellular CDMA network...please correct me if I'm wrong.
That's right, u.s. cdma "world phones" have gsm radios but are locked down from connecting to gsm networks in the u.s. This is not just the normal sim lock found on gsm phones but they are hard coded to ignore u.s. gsm networks.
Some have been unlocked to work on any network through various methods including flashing a modem from a non-us varient of the same phone and other hacks. I can't comment specifically on this phone however.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Well, that points me in the right direction, and confirms what I read about swapping modems (on the other phone mentioned).
So basically it's software telling it not use a certain frequency, and not that the phone itself is incapable of picking it up (had my doubts about that)
Pretty shady the way phone companies are allowed to operate (don't get me started on my unlimited internet in my contract [pre data caps in tmo]. "Hey! check it out, this phone uses data 5 times faster than your old one, oh, and you get half as much too) sorry, end of rant.
I'll keep searching, and post if I find something..
On a side note, can cdma phones be flashed to another cdma carrier like verizon or sprint, or is it the same deal, coded to only use a certain frequency range?
only thing I've heard of is flashing sprint and verizon phones to cricket, metro pcs and boost.
Got my FIDO Razr HD. Rogers SIM = all is good. AT&T sim = asks for unlock code, which i buy online.
After entering code, phone appears to do a factory reset. During the reboot, a box pops up:
"SIM not allowed MM #3"
Now the phone permits "Emergency Calls Only" with the AT&T sim. Rogers SIM = still good.
When I put AT&T sim into my other phone (HTC desire) it works fine on roaming (rogers network). So I know sim + signal is fine.
Don't understand this error message.
Did I mess up the unlock?
advice appreciated, thanks.
Do you have another Canadian SIM you can try? Bell/Telus etc?

Thanks for the replies everyone. to answer the questions:
1) i don't have any other sims right now: just rogers + ATT. Next time i am w/ friends I will ask to borrow telus/bell microsim.
2) they were regular sims that were cut down.
3) haven't had a chance to visit USA since posting topic- but when i do, i will test both cards and also visit an AT&T shop to bug them about it.
Is sim corrupted? I don't think so because it works fine in HTC desire. But I guess trying a new one will prove or disprove.

OOI, is AT&T seen as a much better GSM network than T-Mobile in the US?
I was looking at the T-Mo USA site, and there are some amazing "Monthly4G" SIM only plans (e.g. $30/month for 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 5GB of HSPA data).
This seems much better value than AT&T, Verizon and even Sprint! But is their network sketchy compared to the others?

AT&T offers the second largest network coverage behind Verizon. They are also one of the two GSM carriers in the United States, and tend to be more popular with mobile phone enthusiasts because their UMTS bands are more common and used with other regions such as Canada or Australia. T-Mobile does indeed offer excellent value, but they use mainly AWS band in addition to PCS band in selected regions, thus making them the lesser choice for using unlocked phones from outside the country.
Hey,
Just looking on wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_USA#Radio_frequency_spectrum_chart
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Mobility#Radio_Frequency_Summary
It looks like T-Mo mainly use 1900 for 2G and 1700 for 3G, whereas AT&T use 850 and 1900 for both 2G/3G, right?
So if I bought a Canadian Razr HD XT925 and came to the US, would I be able to use T-Mo's 3G network? I am guessing no, since it does not support 3G on 1700MHz.
But then there is a note on that Wiki page saying that they now have a roaming agreement with AT&T after the failed acquisition. So if I forced the phone into "WCDMA only" mode from the test menu, would it then fall back onto the AT&T 3G network?
Sorry for taking the thread slightly off topic
Cheers,
Su

As you have read, T-Mobile did acquire PCS bands from the failed merger with AT&T, but these bands are not as utilized as their 850 MHz band so it's not as widely available as you may think. Some areas might be able to use the 1900 MHz band for T-Mobile 3G, but I would check with fellow T-Mobile users to confirm first before you dive in headfirst. I know that there are T-Mobile users in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that are getting 3G data connectivity with their unlocked AT&T iPhones.
Well T-Mo do daily plays for like 2 bucks right, so I can always try this out before committing to a contract
Do you think AT&T would be the better bet if I am bringing my own device from Europe?
The reason I ask is that I may be coming to a US college for a couple of years, so naturally, I'm planning ahead to see if my phone will work over there

If you're using a device from Europe or Asia, then yes, you have a much higher chance of being able to get 3G connectivity with AT&T. Off the top of my head, Nokia seems to be the only one that tries to actively keep AWS band in their radios.
Hmm, so I did a bit of research on GSM Arena. Seems the Nexus line of devices consistently support 1700MHz 3G (including the Nexus S which I currently have).
Guess who cancelled their Nexus 4 order last week, and opted for a Canadian RAZR HD instead...
Whoops
My ultimate plan is to get a phone that I can use with both Ringplus and T-Mobile. I know about the Nexus phones and the new Moto X Pure, but I'm on a budget and the new Moto G is just what I want in features for the price.
So my first question is if I can get the XT1548 to work on Ringplus. But that question becomes mute if I can't even get it to work on Tmobile. On the plus side, if I can get it to work on Tmobile, the XT1548 supports LTE band 12. :good:
does anyone know if the XT1548 can be sim unlocked?

You need GSM.
I use an XT1540 on wind and that uses the same bands as T-Mobile I believe. ( I live in Canada. ) I've had previous phones on Wind Mobile that had T-Mobile tags so I believe they also use the UMTS (maybe 1700 band?) signal as well.
"Differences between unlocked GSM andCDMA*phones. This topic is important when it comes to*unlocking*a GSM or*CDMA*phone because they don't both work in the same way. It is because of the differences between them in regards to the hardware they use to connect to a network (SIM card versus no SIM card)." - http://support.mobileunlocked.com/h...ferences-between-unlocked-GSM-and-CDMA-phones - pulled from google for a bit of piece of mind.
Ringplus may have no sim (in order to keep you locked into their network.)
T-Mobile does include sim cards because I've pulled one out of said wind mobile phones lol
Thanks for your reply. maybe a little more context can help.
So, this is the thread that inspired my question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-success-sim-unlock-sprint-xt1056-t2825155
RingPlus is a MVNO for Sprint. You can use a number of Sprint, Virgin, Boost phones on RingPlus. People have also gotten the new Moto X and the Nexus phones that work with all carriers working on RingPlus and T-Mobile at the same time by just switching sim cards. I want to do the same with the Moto G.
Because RingPlus is a MVNO of Sprint, it uses CDMA. This is why I would need to use the XT1548 instead of the XT1540. I hope that clears things up.
Ahhh okay! Yeah it does my bad heh I did kinda rush that answer. I would imagine as long as that variant supports both radio bands I would imagine it would work. I have a single sim but I have heard there is dual sim as well, that would probably be your best bet. Just check what frequency the carriers both run on and give your device model a scan on gsm arena or any spec observant website to see if it supports both.
Example : UMTS 1700 is the band I need in order to use wind mobile on phones.
First, if you are able to purchase an XT1548 you better be sure that it isn't subsidized and the service you purchase it from is willing to allow you to take that device to another MVNO. It's a matter of reaching a staff person who is able and willing. Ting may be the only one that will be helpful with this.
Second, good luck getting Sprint or someone to domestically unlock GSM for this phone. As of today, I doubt it will be easy. It may require you to activate the phone on Sprint service and then find the support chain that will domestically unlock GSM. They are not obligated to do this.
The jumping of hoops might look something like this:
1. Purchase unsubsidized XT1548 from Ting when it's available (PM me for $25 Ting referral credit).
2. Activate on Ting ($6).
3. Ask Ting to "release" the phone to be activated on Sprint.
4. Activate on Sprint.
5. Request DSU from Sprint.
6. Ask Sprint to "release" the phone to be activated on RingPlus.
7. Activate on RingPlus.
8. Activate T-Mobile SIM and install the SIM to see if the phone works on GSM (not 4G LTE capable).
EDIT: If you want to port your number, I wouldn't bother til your final activation.
Good luck!
The US Cellular version of the Moto E is apparently SIM unlocked. By US Cellular's device policy, none of their Motorola branded phones are SIM locked. Perhaps the US Cellular Moto G would be more likely to work on domestic GSM as well as Sprint MNVOs. Certainly that's true of the Moto E.
unlocking GSM on moto xt1548
I have a moto g xt1548 that I asked a friend to get me since I lost my prior phone. However i live in ethiopia for work and this phone doesn't seem to be connecting to the gsm networks here. I'm aware the phone was originally bought for use on virgin mobile's network, but I expected the gsm would work nonetheless here (I reckon the phone uses both CDMA and GSM bandwidths). Some help would be nice here. How can I get the phone to recognise the networks here. I have tried everything from GSM to WCDMA but yet to try LTE (which is also available in ethiopia). I need to get the LTE sim card first. Is there a way to do this? Otherwise would rooting and flashing a custom ROM help? Or is it possible to find a work around to unlock GSM connectivity otlf that is what is locked.?
x1548 is CDMA only as far as I'm aware.

No, the XT1548 supports:
XT1548 US (Sprint, US Cellular, Virgin Mobile)
CDMA: 800, 850, 1900
GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900
UMTS/HSPA: 850, 1700, 1900
LTE: B2 (1900), B4 (1700), B5 (850), B12 (700), B17 (700), B25 (1900), B26 (850), LTE-TDD: B41 (2500)
Single SIM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_G_(3rd_generation)
This device should work in Ethiopia, at least as a basic GSM device, data above basic Edge service may not work.
According to GSM Arena, in that country 900Mhz is used for GSM, and 2100 Mhz for 3G, and 4G/LTE is not available. So the phone should work, but data service will not.
Virgin Mobile XT1548 Unlock
I have the Virgin Mobile XT1548 (on sale at Best Buy for $50 right now) and I'm trying to unlock it to work on T-Mobile. Has anyone managed to do this?
When I put a T-Mobile SIM card into the XT1548 no unlock window comes up, so I'm not holding my breath but it would be fantastic if anyone has found a way to unlock the Virgin Mobile version of the XT1548.

No unlock password prompt opens and no "Invalid SIM" icon appears in the notification bar? What does it show for SIM status in Settings - About Phone?

The odds that I'd run into a thread that's tailored to my question.
I placed my T-Mobile SIM into an XT1548 I just bought and... nothing. At all. It's like the SIM doesn't exist.

Odd... And you did a reboot after inserting the SIM?

Yep. Then I place the Virgin SIM back into it and it recognizes just fine. The T-Mobile SIM is brand new and activated. Purchased it with the phone.

After a reboot, it does say "SIM card error" as a notification. If you click on that it takes you to a screen where it asks you to make sure the SIM card is inserted correctly and contact the service provider. Again nowhere to enter an unlock code.
SIM status in settings says: "Not available" for every field. I've tried all four different ways to insert the SIM card (in case I had it in wrong somehow) and still no luck.

Hmm... I got nothing on this one I'm afraid. I've done this lots of times with other locked devices, always opens a SIM Lock password prompt, haven't tried a Moto since a Cricket version of the original G. Sorry.

That's okay, I'm just hoping someone out there has an unlock and is willing to share it or offer it for sale. For $50 this phone is a STEAL if you could SIM unlock it. I'm partial to its IPX7 waterproof capability as well.

I'm actually on the same boat. If I figure something out, I will be sure to let you know.
Gonna try to flash CyanogenMod and maybe even some from http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/general/index-moto-g-factory-firmware-images-t3169639 if I'm feeling adventurous... Will report back.
I already unlocked the bootloader and I have CM13 already installed. I put an AT&T sim card when starting but I wasn't prompted for an unlock code. I did request an unlock code from www.doctorsim.com if that would even make a difference. I'm still waiting for it to be processed.
Heads up for anyone who uses this phone. I got a couple of these unbranded open market 2g/16gb model 2005-5 via the Visible deal a while ago and tried to activate on Tello and Textnow. Bottom line, the phone will activate but it WILL NOT have LTE speed data. This effectively makes the phone useless to utilize with the TextNow free talk and text plan. It CAN be used with Tello as long as you are good with talk and text and ~128kbps data speed. The funny thing about this entire issue is that the phone works FINE with Sprint proper! Talk/Text/Data all function on Sprint but WILL NOT function on a Sprint MVNO. I have a feeling that this is probably due to APN programming issues (which cannot be done on a stock ROM) It seems the phone is setting a 1x default APN vs the proper MVNO LTE APN. Consultation with Tello Customer Service reveals that this has been an on-going issue for at least 3 months with no ETIC on the horizon. Lastly, if you are wondering WTH I am trying to use the phone on a Sprint MVNO, let me tell you Tello is hands down a great deal, provided you have good Sprint coverage in your local area.
Thanks for the heads up. I've been fighting with mine trying to get LTE all day. Guess I'm going back to my Galaxy S5.
No ETIC
I've gone direct to Lenovo with the issue and after comprehensive troubleshooting and banter back and forth there is no solution to using a moto E6 on a sprint MVNO due to the APN programming issue. The phone will work fine on big Sprint proper but you will suffer degraded or completely unusable LTE function if you activate this phone on a Sprint MVNO for the foreseeable future. All this could easily be solved IF a custom ROM for the e6 could be made wherein it allows the APN settings to be set manually. As with the Moto E 2015 you can activate the phone on an MVNO with the stock rom and then flash the custom rom and manually set the APN to get LTE speed.
Just bought a Moto E6 from Visible. Pop in a 516TQ SIM and I got service. I didn't test the speed but it seems fine with LTE logo.
If I put in the Visible SIM (uses Verizon) or T-Mobile SIM, I can see and change VPN. But with the Tello SIM, the APN cannot be changed. There is simply no manual for APN. However, data is still programmed properly and I can make phone calls and use data. I guess this is fixed from the network side. Now I am wondering if this is also fixed on Moto E4 from Boost.

I also have E6 and also was wondering if its compatible with Tello.... How are you using it on Tello if only Verizon CDMA frequencies are supported? Also, are you using Tello SIM or Sprint SIM?
I am currently using Samsung S4-L720 with Sprint SIM on Tello. It activated and works without a glitch. I wanted to switch to Motorola e6 but tello website says E6 is not compatible with Sprint Sim (which is what currently use on tello) . Do I need to buy some dedicated Tello Sim then?

While Visible uses Verizon network, the E6 sold by Visible is a factory unlocked phone that works with all 4 major providers.
I used a Sprint SIM SIMOLW516TQ ("D" SIM). I got it some time back for $1 (4 SIMs pack) from Amazon.
