Hey,
[i'm new here, but i couldn't find a post with this exact problem]
I've been using my HTC Sensation rooted for about 8 months now on 2.3.4/5, and with ICS officially being released i want to update to ICS.
I do have my phone rooted but i do not have any custom roms installed.
In theory it should just update OTA to ICS but when i try to update it my phone reboots and then it gives me this image of an android mascot besides a warning mark (the image didn't work.). Is this superuser blocking the update?
Now i'm wondering what is the best way to get ICS update to work.
At this moment i don't care if i lose the root on my device.
I've been thinking about flashing it so that it would remove the root, make it S-on and remove superuser. (basically make it like it was when i bought it.) and then updating it to ICS.
Any help with my problem or on how to handle the flashing will be appreciated.
If you're rooted, download 4EXT updater, flash 4EXT recovery, flash the 3.32 firmware, then flash an ICS rom.
If i'm correct that will give me a custom rom.
And at the moment i would like to keep the rom stock because i would like all the options to work.
If i'm wrong and it will update to stock rom, then i'll give it a go.
Otherwise is there a way to update to stock rom?
You can't be rooted to flash the OTA, and you HAVE to have the stock recovery too
alright so i need to unroot the phone and somehow manage to uninstall superuser (if it doesn't uninstall with the unrooting).
So my question then is,
Is this possible to unroot the device?
Maybe someone can link me to a good tutorial ?
You need to restore stock recovery and your oringinal Rom intact ( not delete apps in the stock rom). Stock recovery can be obtained from RUU.
Or just flash New firmware and custom Rom if your phone is s-off.

alright, can i use any vodafone stock recovery for my device?
and is there a tutorial around? for noobs like me?

Guide for debranding or going back to stock.
Basically you need to download your stock RUU and go back to your original CID (if you supercided).
The guide basically covers almost all your concern in returning to stock rom and recovery.

i'll give that a go tomorrow and let you guys know what happend.
[dumb noob question!! this should make my phone look like it was when it came out of the box right?]
If i'm correct i need a RUU.
Is it possible to do this tutorial using the OTA update file i got for the ICS update?
Update
So,,
After 2 days of trying to download a good RUU file.
I still don't have it, filefactory always says that the free download slots are all taken.
So i would love if someone could tell me if it is possible to just flash the update file called:
OTA_PYRAMID_ICS_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.5_R-1.50.401_release_252072fll6erqo75dsziua.zip
I would appreciate a reply telling me if this is possible or why it is not possible.
As said, you need to be on a stock unrooted rom and stock recovery.
Is your phone branded or unbranded. What RUU were you trying to download? 1.50.401.1 or else?
Also, did you supercid or not? if yes, you need to go back to original CID to get OTA.
Do not attempt do flash the OTA.zip from a custom recovery because it will fail.
I have RUU_Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.50.401.1_R_Radio_10.58.9035.00U_10.15.9035.02_2_release_228602_signed wich is the latest GB for european unbranded devices. If this is what you are looking for, I could upload it for you. Let me know.
@kualmente
I would appreciate it if you could upload your RUU so i can use it.
As for the phone,
I still have stock rom and recovery, i only rooted it and did supercid.
So when i have a RUU file for my unbranded Sensation i can follow this toturial:

sure you can, if you are looking for stock rom, you can use this one, this ICS RUU from bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1581333... And please read the OP, so you will have stock looking phone.
Hi Friends,
Have a few questions pls, Thanks in advance.
1 What is the difference between official OTA update & RUU update?
2 Is it required to have a rooted phone to make RUU?
3 In case a phone is rooted already, will it be able to be updated by official RUU?
4 Are there any diff betwee n OTA & RUU in terms of settings, regional configuration, stability.. .etc?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app
1. OTA is incremental and doesn't erase anything. RUU is complete and erases everything.
2. No.
3. Yes.
4. Completely different things, since OTA is incremental and upgrades your existing ROM. Can't compare apples to oranges.
Thanks, but what is the major disadvantage of RUU, I understand it will erase all my data & will have to restore data & applications, is there anything else that make it a second choice?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app
Why is it second choice? It's not about choice, it's about picking the right tool for the job. When you want to get OS upgrade, OTA is better - because you get the upgrade without extra pain (without starting everything from scratch). When you suspect your phone is misbehaving, or for some other reason want to restore your phone to the stock state - RUU is the way to go. They're not "better" than each other, they're different, for different occasions.
And im new to this stuff and if you can say or give the link to the thread where i can find what ota is it would be perfect, i searched xda but all i found was roms with ota
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
OTA is "Over-The-Air", so unless it arrives to your phone automatically, as it's supposed to - I believe people aren't keeping OTAs anymore. Once, when Nexus One was still considered a new phone, they did - but not anymore, for a long time now. In the forum you'll only be able to find RUUs, I believe.
In case a phone is rooted already, will it be able to be updated by official OTA?
It seems that OTA does not work for me anymore after I S-OFF'd and rooted.
I know also flashed a new radio. Does that affect the possibility of OTA in any way?
Cheers.
OTA doesn't care about rooting or S-OFFing. If there is OTA standing - it'll be delivered to the phone. Installing it might be problematic (can't be installed by custom recovery without disabling signature check), but the delivery WILL happen. S-OFF doesn't affect OTA in any way. If you don't get OTA - that's because there is no OTA, the servers are stopped.
I see. Signature check be the problem. Any solution for that?
This is only relevant if you have stock rooted ROM and custom recovery.
In that case, you need to locate the ZIP file downloaded by system update, and install it manually in recovery, skipping signature detection.

5. I've just received this system update OTA - 1.47.61.1 or later. If I install it, will I loose my S-OFF and root?
- Yes, you will lose both S-OFF and root once you update because it will update the hboot to 0.98.0002. However, you can try following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16110608&postcount=5 to update the OTA but not the hboot. Check this one out also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190992 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194488 to S-OFF and root if you have updated the OTA.

I decided that it is probably not a good idea to go down to OTA route.
Hi,
I had the stock rom RUU_Saga_S_HTC_ARA_2.14.415.3_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U and I wanted to install the European RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.9_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U. But in the install process there was an 155 error. I tried some times but the same result. I read here a lot and finally I unlocked the phone HTCDEV as my hboot is 2.00.0002 and flash 4EXT_Recovery_v2.2.7_RC5 and ICE_DS_4.4 rom.
I experience some problem with this rom, so is it possible to install the european ruu of GB?
Yes, if you use goldcard or if you're SuperCID (which can only happen on this phone if you unlock it with XTC-Clip).
If you didn't understand something from the above - Google it.

I know the words goldcard and supercid. I saw few threads name them . Thanks for the reply I will try the goldcard.
So i made my sd card Goldcard. what's next, in order to install stock european ruu GB? some guidance maybe?
Relock your bootloader and immediately install (without exiting FASTBOOT USB mode).

I relocked the phone and when i try to install the european ruu it gives me the error 140, and stuck in bootloader. Then I install the ARA ruu and all gone well the phone runs well.
The problem though exists. I want the european ruu and not the ara ruu. Any ideas?
hi
this zip file in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2123337
was the latest version of the software i was running before i unlocked the bootloader and installed a custom rom
in the thread the zip is listed as an ruu how do i use this to get back to stock?
in the zip file is meta-info , system ,firmware.zip, fotaboot and skin_fota
That is not a RUU, its a OTA file. RUU is an executable (.exe) file.
An OTA will not return you back to stock, either. For instance, it will no return you to stock recovery (which RUU will do). Better off to find and run the appropriate RUU for your version (if one exists).

You can technically flash the recovery.img from the OTA and then flash the OTA through stock recovery though I can confirm that evenso, the phone is not returned to 100% stock. The htc splash screen and I'm sure other things do not get flashed. I have run an OTA a few times though and never had any problems.
RUU IS the best way to return to 100% stock though.
thanks for the ultra quick replies
i am really struggling to find an ruu for my phone
i am correct in that i cannot flash a lower ruu?
if i go supercid can i flash any ruu?

Based on this, it doesn't seem that there is an RUU for the HK Jellybean stock ROM.

If S-on, correct, you cannot flash a previous version RUU (usually hboot version check is what prevents this).
SuperCID will allow you to flash an RUU for another region, but still will not allow an RUU with previous version hboot to be installed (SuperCID bypasses carrier/region check, not version check). You also need to be really careful with SuperCID; since with SuperCID and S-on, some Jellybean RUUs will brick the device.
S-off bypasses all security checks, and will allow you to flash a previous RUU.
Hi everyone, I've yet to successfully load a custom ROM on my ville but I have got s-off and supercid. I'm currently on relocked bootloader running the total stock android 4.1. I'd just like to check through the steps I need to take to try a new 4.4.2 ROM. I was thinking of trying twistedkat.
1. Unlock bootloader (I already have the unlock file from htcdev)
2. Load custom recovery (I have TWRP 2.6.3.0 ready to go)
3. Flash SuperSU
4. Flash Rom file (do I need to unzip or flash the zip file in the recovery?)
5. Flash 4.4 Gapps
Any other steps I've missed? I'm on hboot 2.15, kernel 3.14 from the stock updater.
Thanks very much

1- if you didn't unlock your bootloader, you have to
2- i don't know which twrp you have but you shuld use the one from twistedkat thread (it's different from official one)
3- it's unrelated with custom rom flashing
4- DON'T unzip the rom, just flash the zip from recovery
5- you have to flash g-apps if want to use google's apps (gmail, playstore, etc.)
you don't need anything else AFAIK
have fun

By the way i recommend you to change your cid back to original, because supercid has no advantage over original cid. But one day you may want to turn back to stock and if you forget that your device has supercid it will brick the device

Do not forget to flash boot.img in fastboot! To do it, you need to extract boot.img from ROM zip file to same directory with fastboot on your computer and and reboot your device to fastboot mode. Then run this in terminal/cmd: fastboot flash boot boot.img . If you don't do this, your device won't boot to OS. Flashing SuperSU with a custom ROM is unnecessary since root usually is included in custom ROM.
EDIT: You don't need to flash boot.img, because you have S-OFF. Didn't notice it first.

Oh no! I've already ran a RUU with supercid to get back to total stock and that didn't cause any problems. Problem is I don't actually know what the original cid was!

I checked again, ruu doesn't seem cause a brick but ota updates may cause such thing. So i think you shouldn't install ota updates till you remember your original cid

Thanks for the replies guys. One last question. If I load Twistedkat, which is based on CM11, I'll lose Sense?
Can I have sense as well? Is there a flashable sense zip file or something?
Thanks!
You will absolutely lose sense, and there is no way to install sense with kitkat roms right now for our one s

thanks. My CID is 044.
I just SOFF and tried to flash this RUU but keep failing.
I have tried two method putting it on my external SD. Downloaded the file, renamed it and put it as PL99IMG.zip but it doesn't work.
Also tried to flash using fastboot but get a failed message too. Is the RUU compatible with my phone? I used it long time ago and it is all right it don't seems to work now.
finally got it. These are the steps if anyone is interested for CID044 devices.
1) Upgrade Hboot to using the files here
2) S-off using rumrunner.
3) downgrade to 1.41 hboot
4) download RUU from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2157029
5) Follow these instructions to update
