[Q] Rooting on Verizon TouchWiz Android 4.3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey, everyone.
I've been searching around XDA and RootzWiki to try and see how I would be able to root my S III.
I found this one thread that recommended to downgrade to the VRBLK3 firmware.
I attempted to flash it VIA Odinv3.07 and the firmware update (or downgrade) failed.
I don't know what is causing it, probably a patched hole. But, when I rebooted my phone, it told me that the OS was "broken" and I needed to use Verizon's repair utility (I just flashed back the 4.3 MD5 and all my stuff came back).
My question is...
Does anyone know how to root the Verizon S III from 4.3?
OR
Does anyone know why Odin is failing on the downgrade?
Any help or comments are appreciated greatly.
Thanks!

[Q] Updating UNLOCKED SGH-i727

Hi to all!
I'm a new member here and I'm hoping that you guys could help me with my simple question. I'm very new with Android OS since I've been an iPhone user for the past 2 years. So here it is:
I just bought an UNLOCKED AT&T SGH-i727 from a store here in SAIPAN, MP and I'm planning to update my Gingerbread 2.3.5 to 2.3.6. Will it lose the UNLOCK if I do it? I believe the phone is NOT ROOTED and it was just unlock using an UNLOCK CODE. Also, when I tried to check for SOFTWARE UPDATE it says like my SGH-i727's firmware is up to date which is GINGERBREAD 2.3.5 but I believe there is 2.3.6 already as I saw on my friend's i727. Any idea?
PLEASE HELP. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
You won't lose unlock.
Yes there is an update. You have to be sure you have stock 3e recovery and all bloat intact and nothing frozen. You may not see the update right away. It might take a while.
Why you would want a stock update, I don't know.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for your response.
And that's the problem I don't have anything that you've said, idk where go get them. Could you help me with that?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
Ok...do you know the difference between a custom recovery like cwm and the stock 3e recovery?
If you search the general section I have a stock tar hosted there. Sammobile stock tar should find it

How do I unlock the bootloader on S3 running 4.2.1?

I have searched far and wide and cannot find a bootloader unlock method that will work with the Galaxy S3 that has already been updated to official 4.1.2.
The EZ-Unlock app will not work for 4.1.2 (only 4.1.1 and before)
The open1your1eyes0 method that was updated in February 2013 does not work either: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
What do I do? Until I get my bootloader unlock I cannot do anything.
Phone is currently Build Number: JZ054K.I535VRBMB1

dont use it if youre not on 4.1.2 or earlier. youll hardbrick your phone. its a recoverable hardbrick, but a PITA and unnecessary. What baseband are you on?
Need to unlock
Hi all.
I finally had to do a factory reset on my Verizon GS3. Poor performance and yellow factory mode text floating on screen.
I have obtained root access on the phone, however ODIN3 flashing a recovery image fails. My understanding is that I need the bootloader unlocked for that to work. Is there a reliable way to do that?
Edit: running Android 4.4.2

Your bootloader is locked forever, unlocking isn't an option.
If you want anything other than stock you'll have to use Safestrap recovery and modified stock ROMs like everyone else with locked bootloader Verizon S3.
Safestrap is deprecated. At least their site says dev. Has stopped. There's probably a fork of it on github somewhere, but any safestrap you find won't be by the original developer.

Thanks for saying that. I was actually looking for it myself about a month ago after a soft-brick and gave up when I found the info I posted already.
Is it the original dev or is it open source now?

I don't know, I use the Verizon S3 ROMs on my device but it isn't a Verizon device, but I spend a lot of time in the Verizon S3 forum, I see new users looking to customize their device all the time.
Here's the download for it
forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=2405#downloads
Read this thread though, if you have encrypted your data, it will cause bootloop. Yes, it isn't supported anymore, BUT, the Safestrap still available still works.

I use it on Straight talk, my device is a Straight Talk S3 SCH-S968C that uses Verizon towers, my motherboard is actually stamped with the Verizon SCH-I535 model number, its rebranded as Straight Talk's device. Only difference is they disabled the 4G on the Verizon S3 when Straight Talk rebranded it.

No, you can't flash AT&T firmware. That would surely brick your device. You can port the AT&T firmware somewhat easily, they are mostly the same but have different modems and a few other minor differences. I can link you to a thread for porting the US S3 variants.
No that's alright I'm on a note 3 anyway, but I've got a good place to start so thanks!

Take VRBMF1 Update Before Rooting

I haven't been prompted to update to VRBMF1 yet and haven't manually updated. I am still on VRBMB1. Ready to try Beans' one click root method but not sure whether to take the update first or not. Anyone have any suggestions?
Pretty sure it'll work, it doesn't really matter if you're going to end up flashing a custom rom; but it's all preference maybe if you want the new modems just take the update.

Can you provide info if the one click method works for you. I am on VRBMF1. Never rooted before.
Just root. The newest update had signal and battery issues, along with many other issues. Verizon even pulled the OTA. Flashing a newer ROM will give you the newer features anyways, and it will be better.

It was incredibly easy. Only thing that tripped me up at first was that I didn't have the Samsung drivers installed on my PC. Since the thread didn't mention installing them I was assuming they weren't needed. You can get them here. Once I installed them and went through the steps in the thread, I was rooted and unlocked in a few seconds.
I highly recommend LiquidSmooth v2.7 if you'd like to get rid of TouchWiz.

I used the one click from Bean Town, everything went alright . I was having issues with an app just now and rebooted the phone manually... now I got the Verizon detected unauthorized software crap. Be careful. I am also on MF1, now I got to try and figure out a way out.
um now what?

I too am rooted and I am seeking the answer to this question. Personally I just want the annoying window to stop attacking me. It's assaulting me all day, but it won't install the update. Has someone setup a download that I can manually force to my SG3? (I have been searching but I admit I get lost reading other posts and then I'm outta time)

What method do you use to root? I'm on the VRBMF1 build already, on Verizon. I have the S3 toolkit from mskip, but it says it can't do anything until I get the bootloader unlocked. Now I can't find any method to unlock the bootloader for this build. I feel I'm just missing something stupid, but I can't find it :crying:

[Q] Correct way to do this

Hi all, been reading the threads and have 'info overload' :silly: from so many different options. Just looking to get stock OS with root, and the latest update (mf1 I believe) so I can have stable 4g and the latest OS updates. Locked or unlocked BL does not matter. I do have Triangle away just in case it is needed.
In the past I went straight to mf1 and then did the 1 click Casual root. All was good except I had no 4g, even when everyone around me did. So I'm thinking of going to COMBINATION_I535VRALG1_I535VZWALG1_743127_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.zip and starting over.
Should I do ota's to get to mf1, or root first, install a root keeper app, and then upgrade.
Thank you all in advance for any advice you can provide. I tried searching on my own first but there is so much info out there.

You can just update then root as it requires less steps.
Root first. Then from the development section download the new ROM and modem which is separate and flash away. That's what I've been running with the KT747 kernel but others like the LK 3 kernel, so it's up to you whichever you prefer

No problem.
I used the method in this thread to gain root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
It flashes a rooted stock rom (MB1) via Odin. Then used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and took the OTA to MF1. Then restore root. 100% stock Rom + Root. I've had zero issues so far. Don't have to mess with flashing kernel, modem, and it doesn't trip the flash counter.

[Q] How to update baseband/radio/modem

Hi everyone,
My verizon galaxy s3 right now has a baseband of I535VRLHE.
First I was wondering which baseband is most recent, I have heard of MB1, MF1, etc. I know where to get these software updates but I have not found out how to actually update the baseband. Right now, I am jumping between many roms but as of this moment I am on an unofficial cm 10.1 build. They suggest getting on MF1 modem, but I really have no idea how do it.
Thanks for the help,
PS: I looked for quite a while so please don't tell me to keep looking or something like that.

Do I need to wipe anything for flashing it? Also, its ok to flash baseband updates with a custom rom installed?
And these will make my radios stronger, and thus my signal stronger?\
Thanks

What modem do you guys suggest flashing to. Right now I am on I535VRLHE and by my understanding that is extremely outdated. So just to make sure again no wiping anything, no formatting, no anything? And I should be flashing an update in either twrp or cwm? I know these questions sound stupid when I said I flash roms daily, but I really do not want to risk bricking my beloved s3 hahaha.
Thanks for taking your time to help me.
from what i understand the modem that works best for you will depend mostly on location. they might get better as they update, but i get teh same signal on the latest as I did on a modem from a few updates ago.
you can download the all in one packages here
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-firmware-vrbmf1-modemrpmtzsbl-verizon-sgs3-sch-i535/
reboot into recovery, then flash, reboot back to the ROM. if youre worried, make a backup. things can always go wrong i guess.
Ok thank you again, another question haha sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313&page=6 In this thread, the first few pages say to flash via odin and what not none of them confirm being able to flash through recovery. Have you ever flashed a radio through recovery?
Also what advantages does an AIO have compared to just the modem.
