wanted nexus 5 but... - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

does anyone know if att will auto detect the phone and upgrade you to a newer data plan? i know they do this automatically for iphones and any phone they have sold before on their network if you pop a sim chip in. really want to keep my old plan.

As far as I know they don't, didn't have any issues with mine when I activated it but I also don't have an unlimited data plan.

If you login into your att account, does it show what phone you have? Or is it just a grayed out icon of a generic phone image?
I guess that would confirm if att detects it or not.

Yea it says LG 820 if I remember correctly, it doesn't show my s3 anymore.

I don't have exact answers per se, but as an AT&T Mobility employee I have some advice and some warnings.
Advice: It would be much better to get a "4G" SIM instead of the GoPhone one, just in case this causes any issues.
When you go activate the SIM, take another, non-smartphone, phone with you and say that that's what you will use. We will put the non-smartphone IMEI in the system and it will allow you to get the $50 unlimited talk, text, and web.
Once you have the "4G" SIM activated, and the non-smartphone IMEI registered, put the SIM in the Inspire. Now, the seemingly difficult part.
Warning: You MUST find the APN settings for our feature phones somewhere, if you can't, I will try to find them for you. The reasoning behind this is that more then likely the "web" included on the $50 package is only one the feature phone APN, instead of the smartphone one.
Secondly, don't be surprised if one day you stop having internet connectivity. As we do with our postpaid customers, we also have a system for prepaid that sweeps every IMEI used and applies (or in your case, removes) the appropriate data packages.
I know that our prepaid data packages are a ripoff, but this is one way to do it, if only temporarily.
P.S. Where did you hear it would only be EDGE? That seems incorrect to me.

So if I am understanding this right, the phone must be rooted, and the APN needs to be changed to reflect a featured phone data plan instead of the smartphone data plan that the droid is expecting to use. Along with using a 4G simcard, that should be it right? The apn settings are all over the internet, i just read them, its like wap.cingular.com or something, but whats this sweeping system you speak of, does it compare the sim card over the air to the imei its 'registered with' opposed to the imei of the phone its installed in?

It will work just fine stock. I have been running prepaid for awhile now and have not had a single issue. The apns will set on their own to the proper ones once you insert your similar card.
And they are right att dies sweep the IMEI but it doesn't matter as I gave reps my IMEI when I got the inspire and swapped my account from my old captivate. Also I font use a data plan as I am normally around wifi at all times. The only backdraw is if you have less then $5 on your account the data won't connect. ATT can't stop you from having any phone you want on prepaid. They tried with the IPhone and a lawsuite ended that.

Im actually using an Inspire via GoPhone. I have been for a few months. I just went to a local att store and simply bought a simcard, some airtime, and activated that sim card, popped it in and voila! I dont recommend buying a cheap GoPhone and using the sim out of that because recently, att decide to start locking the sim that comes with that phone to that specific phone. I made that mistake the first time and found it out the hard way.
I only have the $25/mo plan and i buy a $25 data package when needed. I dont use a lot of data, since I have wifi available most of the time.

Not getting data

Picked up a Skyrocket to use as a backup to my iPhone 4s. Got it today, and put my micro sim in the Skyrocket, phone worked fine, data did not.
After fiddling around with the APN settings for hours with no luck, I finally went to at&t and had them switch me to the unlimited lte plan, and then the data on the Skyrocket worked just fine.
When I got back home, I popped the sim back in my 4S and....no data. After a few minutes of fiddling with it (restarting the phone, resetting network settings) it started working. So now I thought I was good and put the sim back in the Skyrocket, and the data had stopped working there.
Now I can't get data on either phone, lol, and I'm getting kind of worried that I may not be able to get my unlimited iPhone data plan back, even though I asked them before I switched to the unlimited lte plan and they said I could.
Anyone have any experience with using these two phones together with the same sim card? Anything else I could try that I missed?
Thanks

Easy fix. Stop swapping sim cards.

U can get it back. As long as you're on unlim ur fine. Call att and see what the problem is
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Most likely, its the data service issue going from iphone to skyrocket or vice versa. IOS and Android is set up as 2 different types of data plan from ATT. U can't swap sim cards between IOS and Android. Sim cards can be swap between iPhone to iPhone and Android to Android but not Android to iphone, Especially now with LTE service. That's why when u switch from iphone to skyrocket, ATT has to make changes to your data plan regardless of you getting keeping unlimited or not.
As for 3g Android to IOS or IOS to 3g Android phone, it may work.
I hope I made it clear enough.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk
No. The problem here is you need to be on LTE DATA PLAN to use the skyrocket. You could switch between LTE phones with no problem but I'm guessing to go back to regular 3G LTE data plan won't work. Call at&t

Glock,
Have you tried the LTE SIM back in the non-LTE phone using the LTE plan.
See, I want the Skyrocket for my husband, but want to use my upgrade then switch the SIM with my number back into my Atrix. So the LTE plan and SIM would be my number, but my Atrix is not LTE. I know I will have to change my husbands plan after the switch so that his skyrocket will have data, but only if my Atrix will work on the LTE data.
Anyone know?
I put the lte sim into my 4s and everything works fine, I had the sim cut with one of those micro cutters.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk
Actually figured out my problem, lol. It looks like AT&T is having data coverage issues in my home area. Once I go a few miles away from home I can get data on both the Skyrocket and iPhone using my micro sim.
The last I knew, AT&T uses two different data networks. One for iDevices and one for everything else. My girlfriend and I had to sign up for separate data plans because she went with the iPhone. And, the is no unlimited LTE data plan to switch to where I am.

AT&T Micro SIM?

First let me start this post by explaining my situation.....
I am on my parents AT&T family plan as a $10 add on dumb phone. Previously I have been using other networks (T-Mobile) smart phones to get around having to pay for a data plan. This has worked for the last several years but I have just now upgraded to a phone with a micro SIM (Nexus 5 if course).
Now to the real reason I am posting...
Will AT&T give me a micro SIM without a smart phone plan? I'm not quite sure, but I am fairly certain micro SIMs are only in smart phones. So logically they would require a data plan to get a micro SIM. I have already cut my regular sized SIM to fit, but I botched the cut a little and while it works I'm afraid it may end up falling into if the tray and getting stuck inside the phone.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I wouldn't worry about it falling into the phone. The tray should keep it where it should be. But you can always go to the at&t store and ask. Just don't give them your name and number until you know they won't charge you. Otherwise you could ask for a new Sim card and try the cut again.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Since AT&T doesn't have a full IMEI listing of Google's Nexus 5 in their databases, it' unlikely that they care or would bother to check - you just won't have access to mobile data - roaming or "home" since the account or line isn't provisioned for it - I used to have a line on Gophone but now keeping one on T-Mo's PAYG only, and, T-Mo doesn't recognize or "identify" it as a Nexus 5 under "My Account" - I just get redirected to the Data Plan web page to sign up or switch plan. WiFi on the N5 functioning well & I'm using Talkatone to call out while sitting in the living room.
Can you request a new micro-Sim over the telephone & switch your line to it instead of making a trip to the store, have your "folks" call - if necessary, you can pop the new micro-Sim into an full-size Sim adapater, and get it activated/working on a "non-smart" or dumb phone first. Then, move it to the N5 to use - those of us with multiple GSM unlocked phones do the moving around all the time and AT&T WS really never give me any hassle, you just won't have access to unpaid for Mobile Data, whether it's 4G LTE, 3G/HSPA or + or 2G/Edge, etc. etc.
Or if your current Sim is truly screwed, order a Sim cutter online, bring an old dumb phone to the store and ask for a new regular Sim and then cut it using the Sim cutter they are less than $5 and they are really easy to use. I've cut quite a few without any issues

I don't know personally since I use LTE. But from what I hear the imei doesn't register. I would take anything the store says with a grain of salt. They want to charge you more if they can.

nexus 4 was detected by at&t
nexus 5 will be as well, especially since it'll be sold by t-mobile (t-mobile phones are detected on at&t, the two carriers probably share IMEI lists)
some people have luck by first adding a data block (no MMS though) on the line while using a dumbphone, then switching SIMs (but you'll need to keep that data block)
I don't think they share lists. I have been using a LG G2X for the last three years without them detecting it. Even when they did detect a smart phone (used a HTC inspire for a while) I just popped my SIM in my old flip phone called them up, gave them imei from the dumb phone and had the data plan dropped.
Sounds like I just need to go to an AT&T store and try my luck. Think I will stick my SIM in my old phone before I go.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
If u don't want to ask for a new Sim just cut your dumb phone full size down to a micro (see YouTube). Whether they change your plan is a gamble based in on the imei. Since they do not sell the n5 like tmo and sprint then chances are it's not on their list as a smart phone.

[Q] AT&T Throttling My Data?

I have had my Nexus 5 since the beginning. I am on AT&T of course. I pulled the sim from my HTC One XL and put it into the 5. No problems. Up until this week I think. Speedtest will not go above 0.56Mbps. I am in Houston with plenty of LTE service. I check my At&T account and they have changed the logo above my phone number. It used to show Android HTC. So, I figure that Att has figured out that i am not using "their" phone. I call them up and they say that the IMEI's do not match. The tech guy was cool. He said he was trying to help me. That nothing was going to change. He did a few things but no dice. I wasnt sure if i was supposed to tell Att anything as they might ruin my chances at having good service with an unlocked phone. Anyway, i have restored my phone, changed APNs, and now I dont know what to do.
I don't know but just curious does your accrual signal say LTE?
I didn't tell att when I switched from an iPhone. LTE was still fine

I tried the Tellinfo app. What am I looking for? My signal strength is -106. It used to be around -85. I have tried the ATT PHONE APN and the ATT LTE PTA APN. Both are working the same. ATT is supposed to call back today. He said after resetting the phone, the last two efforts would be to send a new sim, and if that doesnt work, then its my phone. Now, I'm pretty sure it's not the phone. I also didnt have an option for Edge. THere was EvDo.

Well you do know if your on the Unlimited Data Plan on AT&T you get throttled down to about that speed after hitting 5GB .... .
Its probably data cap 5GB throttle city. It happened to me. I called ATT and they confirmed I was at 8GB for the month and had to wait till cycle flipped. After flip flying at "super fast" ATT speeds again.

You're lucky. I'm using my N5 on T-Mobile and I lost my grandfathered unlimited plan. I had no data (but emails and SMS worked ... strange). After a week of communications and testing tech support claimed that the N5 was not compatible with the grandfathered plan (it did show up in my account on the website as Unknown with unlimited data). After upgrading to a metered plan my service is excellent.

Can you confirm what plan and rom you're on? I'm on unlimited lte plan and I USED to be able to do this but since switching to the Nexus 5 they won't even let me connect via wap.cingular on the nexus 5 (even on 3g). I have no problem doing this on my nexus 4 or my i9100 gsII, but either the nexus 5 or att has been blocking me since

Call their support and verify your IMEI and SIM card #. It should work. You might need a new SIM card if you cut it down to fit your N5 since older simcards don't support LTE.

Worked with support for almost two weeks until finally they changed my plan to a measured one. They said the phone was not compatible with the plan though I used my N4 with absolutely no problem. They were not selling the N5 at the time and the support guy I work with had not been trained yet on the N5 (his training was scheduled that next week). They insisted it had nothing to do with the SIM card (I wanted to get a new one but I had gotten a new SIM when I upgraded to the N4).
They tried all sorts of things to get the N5 to connect -- the signal indicator showed LTE, but I was only able to get 2G services (phone, mail and SMS). After the plan change I connected immediately to the LTE data network.
T-Mobile had announced their intention to migrate grandfathered plans to the new metered plans so I was expecting it, but not so soon, and not necessarily because of my upgrade to the N5.
I bought mine direct from Google and it has worked since day one.
I've read that the one T-Mobile sells in the store is identical to the Google play version, but I wanted the 32G one.
But yeah. I'm on T-Mobile and no problems at all. If you aren't already using the new smaller sim cards you'll need to pick one up, but if you're coming from N4 etc you probably already have one.
Literally mine was Plug and play.

I expected mine to be seemless, too. When I was checking my account it had no name associated with the plan -- hadn't since I could remember.
Sounds like a nightmare... that's really weird. Mine worked out of the box. I did have an issue with the 4.42 OTA and root, though, ended up flashing to stock using the Google 4.42 image and after that it worked again. Did yours work before the OTA?
