[Guide] Use Kingo Root on a Mac (and possibly Linux) - Android General

I've written up a detailed guide on my blog describing how I rooted my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on my MacBook, but here is a summary:
1. Install VirtualBox
2. Install VirtualBox Extension Pack (on VirtualBox download page)
3. Install a Windows XP virtual machine
4. Enable USB 2.0 in VirtualBox for the Windows VM
5. Install Kingo inside Windows
6. Root
I'd love feedback as to whether this works on Linux as well.

Can not get Android 64 bit USB driver to instal

I am running vista ulimate 64 bit. I have the Samsung moment with Android 1.5. I can not get the usb driver to install on my computer.
I downloaded the android 64 bit usb driver from the sdk developer site, as well as an alternate download I found from one of the threads in this forum.
Followed these steps:
1) Type "bcdedit /set testsigning on" at an admin command prompt
2) Reboot
I have test mode in the corners...
When I point windows to the proper directory, it is not able to install the driver with the following:
Problem Event Name: PnPDriverNotFound
Architecture: x64
Hardware Id: USB\VID_04E8&PID_681C&REV_0222
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033
HELP!!???
What do you mean by the first step, I have never seen that before in any adb guide? Just go to device manager, uninstall the current driver under adb interface and install the 64 bit driver.
are these the drivers you tried to install for your phone?
What are you trying to do on your phone, just see the SD Card?
I've tried several times to get these drivers to upload here and couldn't so use this link
Couldn't link either, good gosh
He said something about the SDK so I assumed he was talking about ADB...
@elephant007:
Hi,
My Windows7 is not detecting following drivers:
CDC Abstract Control Model (ACM)
CDC ACM Data
XDA
I am trying to connect my DIAM100 (Running 2.2 Froyo) as a USB Storage.
If you have the drivers can u email them to me?

VMWare and Captivate

Is the Captivate not able to see the Captivate when it is plugged into the computer? I have windows 7 running via VM Ware on my Mac, Because that is all I have, and it won't see the phone. I want to use the Odin Stock restore but if it won't recognize my phone I guess I can't use it.
Chris
What version of vmware? Not sure on the mac, but is there an option for it to pass usb through to the vm? Did you install the drivers in the win7 vm for the captivate? More details would be helpful.
Yeah I installed the drivers on win 7 in VMWare, Its on a mac. Its VMWare Fusion3. When I plug it in my Comp asks me would you like to mount in OSX or windows and I click Windows and it just won't mount. So if I try it with debugging mode on It will mount onto the Mac no matter if I select OSX or windows. So i'm just wondering if the samsung USB can't connect through VMWare.
do you have the android sdk installed on your Win 7 VM?
The reason I ask is because you could run "adb devices" in a command prompt on the vm to see if the VM is seeing the device at all.
it sounds like it may be a bit easier to just boot camp your mac if you have access to you windows 7 disk, just create a small partition that you can go back to in times of need

[Guide] Windows RT 8.1 Kits

This is a guide to setting up Windows Kits on Windows 8.1 RT. While it itself is a set of debugging & testing tools that Microsoft publishes officially for Windows 8.1 RT, I haven't looked at them in detail and possibly there are tools in it that are useful for you.
Mandatory Warning
This is a set of development tools and should not be toyed around with if you don't know what you are doing.
Disclaimer
These tools were provided by Microsoft Corporation and this guide only points you out to the tools I've found.
There is no warranty, express or implied for these tools, either from me or from Microsoft.
Includes
ARM Kits Policy (Needed to run development binaries on Windows 8.1 RT) Info here (MSDN)]
ARM Debugging Tools (WinDbg, Gflags) Download here (Source)
ARM App Certification Kit Info and Download here
ARM Windows Performance Toolkit (included with above)
Guide
Make sure you are sane enough and you need to install these.
Download the ARM Windows App Certification Kit (third in the list above) and install.
Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\arm\SecureBoot. Open InstallKitsPolicy.cmd with an Admin CMD Prompt.
This will install the Kits Policy (other tools will not work without this). After rebooting, use Volume Down to select "Install" in the black screen that appears, and press the Windows button on your RT Device to proceed.
After it boots, try to run C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\arm\dxcapsviewer.exe and see if it runs. If it does, your Kits Policy is now installed. Download the ARM Debugging Tools from above.
Install it. It'll also install to C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.1. The Debugger is located at \Debuggers, other useful binaries are around in \bin\arm. They also install Start Menu entries.
Notes
If the Kits Policy fails to install (black screen does not show up on next boot), try running the commands manually in an elevated command prompt. It failed to work for me in the first few tries, maybe due to a repeated command in the .bat file provided by MS. Running it manually should allow you to ignore that error.

VM software for 32-bits

Hi
I am on Windows 10 ( 32-bits system) on an oldish Intel 2- Core 14-2120 3.30 GHZ 32-bits CPU. I want to virtualize a 2nd OS ( Windows 10) in order to switch between the two OS without having to reboot each time. Unfortunately all the Virtualization softwares I have looked into, are designed for 64-bits. I tried a few of them and I invariably get a message that I cannot install because a 64-bits platform is required.
I have been able to install only an older VMware app. ( v. 5 or so) It did go in. and I was able to create a VM box by following the instructions. However I hit a brick wall: when I try to install the CD from the optical drive, I do get the Windows Logo on the VB screen, but it stops there and I cannot install the virtual Windows 10. Why? How can I finalize the 3nd OS installation?
Thanks
Ittiandro
VirtualBox is available as 32-bit edition, too.
It didn't help me
It would be helpful if you specified what virtualization applications you had used for this. I know for sure that there are virtualization apps that allow you to virtualize a 2nd OS (Windows 10) on 32-bit systems like yours. I suggest that you try using VMware 7 for this, as I have often used this piece of software myself, and I can say that this is the best virtualization software that I have tried for purposes similar to yours. I won't be able to test any other virtualization apps of this kind since I have a 64-bit operating system now, but I'm sure you will succeed.

OS recovery

How do I revert back to my default OS which is Windows 10 after installing and running PrimeOS on dell pc.
Have an USB-stick at hand where the full Windows 10 OS is copied onto
In PC's UEFI / BIOS set PC to boot from USB-stick
Plug the USB-stick into PC
Re-boot PC from USB-stick
Follow the instructions shown on PC's monitor
