Transfer files from one Android phone to another via USB cable - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone.
I wonder if I could somehow transfer files from an Android phone to another one using its OTG capabilities and a USB cable. (not over wifi, bluetooth etc.)
I need this because I have Nexus 4 (8gb) and another phone with microsd slot, which I could use for storage purposes.

I know what you're trying to say, but Nexus 4 doesn't support OTG (without external power). But my another phone does, so I want to send files from it to Nexus 4.

If I connect one device to another, it starts to charge and says it got connected via USB and after a while it stops charging..

I connect the OTG cable end to xperia neo and other end to Nexus 4. It starts charging it and then stops, but USB connection persists.

Try this...

I did turn on USB connection on Nexus 4, but xperia neo doesn't see any usb devices.. It's probably because nexus 4 usb connection requires drivers to be installed.. seems like it would work only if it mounts as a regular flash drive

Problems with USB OTG

Recently I'm facing certain problems related to the USB OTG. It was working fine till some days ago. Now the Galaxy R does not detect the attached pen drive. Some times it does and then instantly gives one of the following errors...
1. USB device damaged or
2. USB device disconnected unexpectedly....something like this
as such I'm not able to access the pen drive through USB OTG. I can however successfully connect and use my pointing device (USB Mouse). What could be wrong?...Any body else facing such problems? Is this related to the device or the type B OTG cable that I'm using.
have u flashed ur pendrive with NTFS file system?
if yes than re format it using FAT32 file system and try. and if ur pendrive is already having FAT32 file system than maybe possible its damaged or something try connecting pendrive with pc and check. if its working fine with pc than format it and than try with phone.
as u have said pointing device is working fine that means ur cable is ok, but for surety u can give a try with other pendrives/supported hardware.
Now this is really confusing.....I just noticed that I can access the PD and its contents through OTG when connected in a certain position....more like fine tuning the position of the Pen Drive's attachment with the OTG cable till its detected by the device. After that even the slightest movement of the cable or the PD disconnects it...saying USB device disconnected unexpectedly....now what should I make of this? Device fault or Cable problem?
Well this could be because of damaged pen drive usb plug/damaged otg cable or damaged phone usb port. If ur phone is working fine when u connect it using data cable to pc and if transfers working fine means phone usb port is ok.
Try connecting pendrive with pc if its workibg fine there means ur otg cable is damaged.

Seems like I have a damaged OTG cable since the USB port is working fine for all, but the OTG cable. Any ways thanx a bunch for your help. Also which OTG cable are you using....atleast next time I will end up buying a good long lasting one
i m not using any usb cables as its not usable for me, but if u r buying from ebay i would suggest to buy from reputed sellers. read their feedback before buying, many sellers sell usb otg cable with some seller warranty like 3 or 6 month. so better buy those cable, u will have to pay 30~50 rs more but ur product will be secured and on ebay reputation is everything so they wont deny to change to cable as they dont want negative votes for em
Hello mate;
i got this cable 3 weeks ago, its working perfectly !!

[Q] USB 3.0 and Nexus 5 in Windows 7 not working ?

Is anyone having problems getting true usb 3 speeds when connecting their Nexus 5's to windows with the usb cable ?
Everytime I connect my nexus 5 to any of my usb 3 ports on my pc windows keeps saying this device can perform faster if connected to a usb 3 port when in fact it is ???
I've connected my corsair flash voyager usb 3 stick to eliminate and port or driver issues and the usb stick is working fine and usb 3 transfer speeds and I don't get nagged at by windows saying it can perform faster, so is there something wrong with the usb stack driver from this phone or android 4.4 ?

Your problem sounds rather odd....The Nexus 5 is not a usb 3.0 device to begin with...the only cell phone on the market with usb 3.0 is the Note 3

That's a good question, indeed it's micro usb port which is only usb 2.0 I've done a bit of digging and it seems the SOC of the nexus 5 supports usb 3.0 so google need to fix their firmware as to stop it reporting that the device can perform faster when connected to a pc.
This is usually caused by bad drivers on the PC, not the phone.
My phone works just fine when plugged into USB 3.0, no prompts, no issues. Note that this phone won't actually run at USB 3.0 speeds, but it will run just fine otherwise. Smartphones do not need USB 3.0 as none of them are even remotely fast enough to make use of it right now.

That's odd,all my other usb 3 devices are working just fine,it's only the nexus 5 that is saying that on plugging in, i agree it is bad drivers but not from my pc,it's the firmware on the nexus, if it's not a usb 3 device then the firmware shouldn't be sending out the wrong commands.

USB3.0 charges 1.5x faster than USB2.0 if i remember correctly
Same here! Reports usb3 in win7 and win8.1 pretty anoying
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
This would be a driver issue. And besides, the cable that comes with the device isn't USB 3.0 compatible.

it uses same usb charging mode as in usb2.0 port and not ac charging mode here on intel h77 usb3.0 chipset. i wish it could fast charging with 1a when plugged in at usb3.0 port, unfortunately it's not.

+1 on same environment here. Not all operating systems are currently reporting of the warning, but the (minor) issue is present.
So does mine.
On a fresh windows installation.

Samsung T3

The Samsung T3 external SSD is USB type C and is extremely fast. Using the stock cord that came with my phone I can make a twrp backup faster than to the internal storage.
Anyone else use one?

That's because your phone has to read and write from flash at the same time. My OTG cable and USB 3.0 drive i've had for 2 years os still faster than backing up internally also. But I agree, the T3 would probably super tots.
The T3 is also very fast with the computer. Transfers 5gb in seconds

I've tried hooking up my otg micro USB cable with flash drive. But 6p isn't reading. I figured it can't transmit data micro USB style. Is that why its not reading it? Have you tried that @Gytole?

I used micro usb otg cable, then micro USB to type c adapter, into 6p. Im saying I used a type c adapter and I think that's why it wasn't connecting to the flash drive but either way whatever happened it was not connecting and I tried numerous times I even tried apps like stickmount
Whether the nexus 6p works with exfat or NTFS formatted drive
Please confirm
3rd party app will mount exFAT-formatted T3

I just took another pass at getting my 6P to work with my exFAT-formatted T3, and this time around (Android 7.1.2) saw multiple paths to success.
Firstly, this time, when I plugged in my device, the system presented a notification, which led to a dialog asking if I wanted to "format the device for mobile data storage" – which would have meant reformatting to FAT32. Not what I wanted, but pretty cool that it was an option and I didn't have to go digging.
Secondly, a quick googling turned up a third-party app that will mount exFAT volumes. It's called Paragon exFAT/NTSF (I don't have permission to post urls here yet). I had to pay $5 for exFAT support, and it wanted Total Commander (free) to browse and operate on the files.

Galaxy S7 won't connect to my Windows 10 laptop

Hi I have the UK version of the Galaxy S7 SM-G930F on the O2 network running Android 6.0.1
Baseband:- G930FXXU1BPJG
Build :- MMB29K.G930FXXS1BPLD
I have tried to connect it to windows 10 using both Smart Switch and Kies 3 and both time my laptop doesn't seem to recognise the handset. When i plug in my Samsung USB cable the handset charges but nothing else happens. I don't even get an error message saying my handset can't be recognised.
I have updated Kies too the latest version and the USB drivers.
Any ides / solutions to my problem?
Thanks
Try different USB cable / USB port
Charging connectors are separate to the data connectors so it could charge and not be seen by the machine if they are damaged
so what does that mean?

What does it sound like it means?
Try a new usb cable or usb port as I already said
When you connect your phone using your cable to the PC charge your phone?
If so, go to developer options; scroll down until you see USB configuration and change it to MTP rather than Charging.
If that doesn't work, try using a cable that is used for syncing as the current cable you are using may only have the purpose of just charging devices.

Might need the phone USB port repairing or replacing then
Dropped it or had it in water?
try changing USB configuration and change it to MTP/file transfer. also while connected look in device manager on your laptop for any unrecognised device. you can use window troubleshoot to search for any drivers you might need
Same issue ,but in Windows 7

Question USB file transfer not working on A52 4g with Android 12

When I connect my A52 to my PC is will start charging but I can not get it to switch over to Default USB configuration to stay on and in Transferring files mode.
Please check your Samsung USB driver and also USB Cable, I used A12 too, there is no problem about USB connection for transferring files.
Turned out to be the Samsung USB cable that they provided with the phone. Used another cable and it worked just fine.

Agreed... I would have thought a Samsung cable would be sure to work.
