Problems with USB OTG - Samsung Galaxy R i9103

Recently I'm facing certain problems related to the USB OTG. It was working fine till some days ago. Now the Galaxy R does not detect the attached pen drive. Some times it does and then instantly gives one of the following errors...
1. USB device damaged or
2. USB device disconnected unexpectedly....something like this
as such I'm not able to access the pen drive through USB OTG. I can however successfully connect and use my pointing device (USB Mouse). What could be wrong?...Any body else facing such problems? Is this related to the device or the type B OTG cable that I'm using.

have u flashed ur pendrive with NTFS file system?
if yes than re format it using FAT32 file system and try. and if ur pendrive is already having FAT32 file system than maybe possible its damaged or something try connecting pendrive with pc and check. if its working fine with pc than format it and than try with phone.
as u have said pointing device is working fine that means ur cable is ok, but for surety u can give a try with other pendrives/supported hardware.

Now this is really confusing.....I just noticed that I can access the PD and its contents through OTG when connected in a certain position....more like fine tuning the position of the Pen Drive's attachment with the OTG cable till its detected by the device. After that even the slightest movement of the cable or the PD disconnects it...saying USB device disconnected unexpectedly....now what should I make of this? Device fault or Cable problem?

Well this could be because of damaged pen drive usb plug/damaged otg cable or damaged phone usb port. If ur phone is working fine when u connect it using data cable to pc and if transfers working fine means phone usb port is ok.
Try connecting pendrive with pc if its workibg fine there means ur otg cable is damaged.

Seems like I have a damaged OTG cable since the USB port is working fine for all, but the OTG cable. Any ways thanx a bunch for your help. Also which OTG cable are you using....atleast next time I will end up buying a good long lasting one

i m not using any usb cables as its not usable for me, but if u r buying from ebay i would suggest to buy from reputed sellers. read their feedback before buying, many sellers sell usb otg cable with some seller warranty like 3 or 6 month. so better buy those cable, u will have to pay 30~50 rs more but ur product will be secured and on ebay reputation is everything so they wont deny to change to cable as they dont want negative votes for em

Hello mate;
i got this cable 3 weeks ago, its working perfectly !!

Is Samsung cable important?

Hi,
I am having all kind of problem with my nexus s 4g. I searched around and found some people had their problems because they had the wrong cable. Is there really a difference between non-samsung cables and samsung cables ? Thanks
What kind of problems? I've had problem with the touchscreen responding weirdly when using a different amperage charger. No problem when using ANY cable on the stock charger or on the computer though.

Yes, if you are going to be using adb, or fastboot it is recommended to use the USB cable that came with it. I have used other cables before on the Nexus, and fastboot or usb debugging won't read at times.
Hope this helps.
I have a LG cable. I connected my phone to the computer ( i tried this on a couple different computer ) and i do not see my phone as mass storage device i can only see it as Unknown in Device Manager. I called Samsung and they told me there is no driver for this phone. I have tried PDAnet ( at the page where it asked me to plug in my phone nothing was detected )and have installed SDK with google usb driver. I have also tried Samsung_Mobile_USB_Driver_V1.3.800.0.msi.... . I went to Update Driver and selected List all drivers to have it display all drivers on my computer and there was no ADB devices....

You don't need to install ADB drivers for the mass storage to be detected.
A standard mass storage driver is used when plugged in a computer so you don't need administrator rights.
mabry, that's very strange. Unless the cable is defective, you shouldn't have any issue with adb or fastboot. I've used a cable from an LG phone, a cheap winding cable and at least 2 other cables I've found on the spot (at my parents house) to do adb and pull stuff from the phone while I was away from home. They all worked flawlessly *shrugs*
I have tried two different LG cables and a HTC cable from a HTC windows phone ( dont think that matter..) In total i have tried three cables and on three computers , all same result... I do have the newest 2.3.7 update from Sprint... i bought this phone off of a kid who hasn't been paying his bills so the phone itself hasn't been released for new services but i don't think that would affect how it connects to a computer ...

everything else on the phone works fine. The port itself looks fine and it charges fine ... when connected to a computer or the power adapter...
i have downloaded an app from the market and its called USB host controller. I started the app and on the Info page of the app it shows.."S3C USB Host driver not found!" and "Root hub is not present, USB Host mode not active or not available"... does that mean there is something wrong with the phone itself ?
Cased sealed went to Spring and bought a data cable from them. Now my phone is working just fine. They said sometimes different cables will have pins for different function ( charge, data etc..) Will THANK all that tried to help

Except those cables you tried all have data pins connected, because they were meant to be used with smartphones...
Happy it's working for you, but strange problem nonetheless.

How to use usb otg cable?

Ok so I finally got myself a usb otg cable, but how do I use it? Do I have to install any special driver for it? Is there a way to test if the cable is functional? At the moment nothing happens when I connect the cable and the pen drive..
Those who are using it, please do guide..
Proud to own a Galaxy R
it should work without any such additional driver...
Just insert it and u should see a message in notification like 'usb device connected' and 'click here to safely remove usb device'
u can access all ur file of pendrive in the location
/sdcard/usbStorage
I'v tried pen drives & wireless mouse... they all worked perfectly
Sent from my GT-I9103
Ok.. And which rom and kernel version are you using??
Proud to own a Galaxy R
To use otg u dont require any special kernel or rom, its native feature and will work on all stock and custom roms/kernels.

Ok in that case I guess the cable is faulty

insert cable and plug any pendrive in it (make sure its formatted with FAT file system). notification about usbstorage will appear in ur status bar. if u r not able to connect than maybe cable is faulty, if u have other phone which supports usb otg (gs2, gnote, in nokia n8, c601, e7, 701 etc) u can try over it.
I installed usb host controller from Google play and it is showing this error :
Proud to own a Galaxy R
its usb host controller and no one is sure that sgr supports usb hosting or not.
just try with simple fat formatted pendrive and if its not working than maybe ur cable is faulty, u can ask replcement or refund.
Dude, Stupid as it may sound, but hope u are not trying to connect a usb hard drive coz that requires an additional usb hub for power.
I ask becoz I have been there. Was pretty convinced that I bought a cheap faulty otg cable until a tried a fat pendrive
Sent from my GT-I9103 using XDA
Haha.. No no I'm testing with pendrives that are formatted on fat32.. According to the videos I saw online, the phone is supposed to detect and notify when the cable is connected but I don't get any notification.. So I'm pretty sure that the cable is faulty..
And I don't have any other phones to test it on, neither do I have a ps3 controller to check if it works as well..

Better u ask for refund or replacement

I tried repairing it today as I came across some diy threads explaining a common mistake resulting in the cable not functioning properly but sadly I damaged it beyond repair.. Hopefully the I'll find a working cable next time..

anybody tried Nokia CA-157 OTG cable....??
buy such things from local stores or trusted ebay sellers so that in cases like this item is damaged or not working, u can ask refund or replacement.

pendrives, usb mouse, usb keyboards will work fine but if u r connecting external hdd u will have to plug them to pc for power source (usually all usb hdd comes with Y shape usb cable, put extended usb plug in pc and normal plug to sgr)
btw u bought cable for very cheap price is it from local store or online store?

[Q] usb otg cable doesn`t work

I had my 7.7 for some time and about 2 days ago i've bought a cheap chinese usb otg cable from some shoup around here. I thought it would be as simple as pluging it in and connecting some usb stick like i've done with justabout all usb otg stuff i previously owned. But it doesn`t do anything. I`ve tried other usb devices, the tab simply doesn`t power them at all. I`ve also disasembled the cable and measure it, everything is fine. I`m on stock ics 4.04, also tried a couple of kernels, it just doesn`t work.
Has anyone encountered such a problem.? Damn weird....

errrr....I think I misread your issue and specific item...
sorry!
Still great though!
The usb otg cable is just a plain simple usb cable with a 20kilo ohm resistor placed between 2 pins on the galaxy tab 30pin connector. That's about all the things inside the actual cable. When you plug it in, the tablet should figure out that the 20k resistor made contact with the pins and an accesory was connected. Mine doesn't. The cable is fine, i think there's something wrong with the tablet. Doesn't it supossed to power on whatever you insert on that usb port? Because i can't get those 5v on the port.
I don't know if it's a software or hardware problem....

what file system is your USB Stick using? try formatting the stick to FAT32 and see if its a file system issue
have you tried using another OTG cable? I'm also using a china knock off bought for 4 bucks, running stock ICS and it detects most of the thumb drives I attached to it
thanks for the replies but the situation is kind of different in my case.
In order for the tablet to read what kind of filesystem you have on a usb mass storage device (stick, hdd, whatever) it must first power it on and then attempt to access it. In my case, it simply doesn't power on. So, it doesn't matter what kind of file format it has. Also, if i plug a mouse/keyboard, it won't work either.
I thought that maybe it's a broken wire inside the connector, so i took it apart and measured each pin. The otg adapter is fine, it should do the job. I've also tested on another samsung tab and it worked straight away. It seems there's something wrong with my tab. However, other then this, the 30 pin port on the tab itself seems to be working fine.

[Q] Quick Usb question

OK so here is my problem: every time I connect a USB via the micro USB port the device doesn't detect the USB. However sometimes if i am lucky I only need to twist the cable and it works shortly. Probably the cable is destroyed, anyone know if I need exactly this cable or if I could also use a normal micro USB adapter cable. Thank you.

Well, I'm a bit confused, as the 70x has actually 2 cables.
1. The USB cable that connects to a PC
2. The USB dongle adapter that has a full size USB connector (female) for connecting flash sticks for example.
Regardless, as in number 1, you can't use just any micro USB cable, like the one that comes with a camera for example. You might, but then again, the data connections may be wrong. Best thing is to try. Typically I use my HTC cable. Regardless, you won't damage anything by trying.
As in number 2, well, it may be hit and miss if you get a generic one. The + and - pin layout should be the same, but the data might be different. The only way is to check.
When you twist your cable, make sure it's not actually twisting the connector (micro). This may give false readings, when in fact it could be a damaged micro USB port on the Tab. So check it good.

ok thanx. found a working cable.

Otg support?

Hello all.
Just bought an otg but doesn't seems to work.
Also used the second otg I bought in case the one came out dead.
Does anyone had any similar problems?
My phone has Oreo out of the box.

Problem solved
Otg is supported pnly with the original adapter.
sorry for necroposting, but i have an otg cable and the original adapter, but the phone isnt recognizing the usb device at all. i have tried channging the usb connection options to MTP, PTP etc etc
You should not have to do anything to get OTG going. In particular you should not have to change USB connection type from developer settings manually, that should happen automatically depending on what device you connect.
The only catch is that you need a decent OTG cable, which has all the correct pins in it. Using a microUSB OTG cable + an microUSB to USB-C adapter for example will NOT work (not unless the microUSB adapter has the OTG pins, which is really unlikely).
I'm using this Anker OTG cable and it works perfectly, first try. So far I've tried external storage devices (card reader, stick, even a 2.5" HDD enclosure), keyboard, mouse, and a MIDI keyboard.
If you need an app for accessing USB storage files I can recommend either USB Media Explorer, or the USB OTG plugin for Solid Explorer.

thanks man. ill give that a try. i was trying to look at some files on a flash drive while at work as the systems we use (and im currently using) dont allow external drives to be accessed on our desktop systems, i can thank citrix cor that. Ill give that a shot when i get home just to future proof myself. Also, i see your location as Transylvania. Ive visited there a couple times and it was freaking awesome!!!! Ive even learned how to make my own mici and smuggled some mustar clasic back home too! My fiance was raised in Piatra Neamt and she gave me the thumbs up on my mici
