Downloads app empty after rooting despite having files in sdcard/Download - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I know that this is not a big deal, but it is just annoying me. After rooting (I am on Stock by the way) my "Downloads" app is empty while ES Explorer with Root activated shows files in the Download folder, even going to Settings and Storage I can see that "Downloads" info there has the right info of the total file sizes, yet, the actual "Downloads" remains empty..
Again I know that this is not a big deal.. But it is an annoyance, I just rather know the reason or find a way to fix it. I would appreciate your tips or support for finding out what may be causing the issue or how (or if) I can solve it.

The "downloads app" is what manages your downloads. It is not a shortcut to the "downloads" folder. It only shows you what you've downloaded using it but when you wipe the phone, you cleared the spp.

Wow thank you so much for explaining that, i learned something new

Photos keeps copying by itself

I transfered some pictures from my mac to the captivate... After a while when i go in the gallery app my pictures are getting duplicated many times... Far as 5x each... And when i try to delete them it takes ages and i have to close the app or else it eats my battery... Anyone is having the same problem?

Here is a post from cgm8 (10th December 2010). See if it resolves your problem.
Ok..here is the fix from other thread
With root explorer delete:
- /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.media/externalXXX.db
- /sdcard/Android/data/com.cooliris.media
reboot
Good luck
photos keep duplicating themselves.
I too had the same issue. I would have 5 copies of each picture in my gallery. I was hesitant to delete the files recommended below with Root Explorer so I just used Root Explorer to rename the files (removed the db on one and the word media on the other) rebooted and many of the dupls disappeared on their own, the originals were fine. We'll see if it lasts.. also, anything I really did want to delete manually deleted very quickly.
I found the easiest way to deal with this is to go into manage applications>all>media storage>clear data...then reboot
problem solved..
I just downloaded sgs tools for captivate then apply the script "clear_thumb_db.txt"

Any idea as to what causes this?
well i fixed it using the manage apps option above.. just a few hours after it happened to me.. talk about timing!
This always happens to me if I root/unroot the phone with my sdcard in. If I take it out before hand its fine.
I just mount my phone and open all the massstorages and delete the thumbnail files in the DCIM folders and that works fine. You have to understand all the copies you see are thumbnails and deleting via the phone thru gallery can delete the real image...
i have never un-rooted..

Quickpic.

I'm having issues with quickpic and was wondering if anyone else had the problem or have a solution. The other day I spent a ton of time "excluding" all the files and folders oF my dropbox and other random files. I open up quickpic and bam! They are all showing again. I haven't flashed a new rom or done anything of the sorts. I just don't understand why it keeps doing it to me and its getting annoying :/ help anyone?

Did you try to uninstall and install Quickpic back? I think that should help, however I`ve never had that problem.
Well it stayed the same after I deleted it so lets see in a few days if they stay excluded :/

Just put a password on it so no one can accidentally see all you porn.

In stead of excluding folders (sounds very time consuming), just set it to scan certain folders only. It'll be faster, and you do not run by this risk of something showing up by accident. If excluding and you just change a folder name or if a mount point changes, they will show again.
Mine's just watching camera folder, pics, downloads, and movies. Simple, fast, and I'm in control.
An other advice:
In those few "watched" folders, add folders with a .nomedia file inside. Then stick all the sensitive stuff in there. It'll be hidden in your gallery every time you open quickpic, but you can get them to show up with a few buttons press (settings, show hidden)
They will be hidden automatically next time you open quickpic.
Nice if you got sensitive shots of your missus that you wanna keep for your eyes only, or if you got lots of system png's for customising gui, but you don't want them to clutter your gallery..

Yeah I use hidden folders for a lot of my icons and such my phone card is unorganized and stuff so my folders are just confusing xD

Somethings gone wrong on my quickpic and the way it handles dropbox photos.
I used to just have one dropbox folder showing, camera uploads, than last week or started showing loads of other folders from dropbox which I didn't want.
I deleted the cache on both apps and now it won't display anything at all from my dropbox account.
Does anyone know how to get quickpic to show dropbox files again?

App to completely remove deleted data from phone?

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows of a good app that completely removes data, such as deleted sms, photos, etc. from your phone? Some of the ones I've found so far are File Shredder, My File Shredder, Advanced File Shredder and SHREDroid, but these either only allow you to clear one entire directory and not your entire phone, don't provide the adequate options or are really glitchy.
Some things I'm looking for are:
- Option of how many passes
- Option to delete/overwrite all deleted content (not just one directory at a time)
And if possible:
- Option to completely remove/overwrite current content (i.e. current photos, text messages, etc, that have not been manually deleted yet)
- Option to automatically completely remove deleted content (i.e. once I delete a text message the shredder will automatically overwrite it)
Thanks for any help and sorry if this is posted in the wrong section.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions?
Do you still want the phone to be in a working condition or totally busted?

Still working. I just want it to completely delete things like deleted text messages, photos, contacts, etc. I'm sure you probably know that once you delete those things they still stay on your phone until they are overwritten by something else. I just want an app to overwrite them right away/on demand.
Anyone?
I don't have an answer but the previous suggestions tell me people don't get it.
Deleting files from any computer doesn't exactly make them go away. It just removes the index marker pointing to them. Those files then gets overwritten as needed. This is why data recovery software works. It looks for the files regardless if an index of the files exists.
Suppose you sold your phone to someone you know and of tech savvy... If her or she wanted to, that person could recover delete files and recover person information you had on your phone. Formatting doesn't fix this eaithe.
I know windows and Dos programs exist to properly delete files so they can't be recovered, but don't know of any on android. I hope this educated someone and I'm not an expert on the subject so don't u take my word for it.

A way around that would be to just put random info from your pc on your sd card, until it's completely full. That would also erase it. After all, the deleted file can be retrieved as long ass it's not overwritten. From my own experience though, files get overwritten pretty fast on android. I've tried using recovery software, but wasn't able to retrieve my files after 24 hours. You could try downloading a file retriever yourself and see what's visible and what not.

Viewing Firmware and Hidden Files - Help Appreciated

Good afternoon!
I have entered into a strange predicament regarding my Galaxy S3. Over the weekend, the phone took a nasty fall and the LCD was shattered on the phone, rendering it technically working internally as it will boot up, take battery charge, and allow me to access files via USB. The only problem here is that I cannot see ALL files visible within the phone.
A month or two back, I installed an app called Hide It Pro that hides photos and files of your choosing from general browsing in the phone. The only issue here is that I cannot seem to locate these files anywhere within the visible files of the drive. As such, I was looking at the file size of the the "Phone" as listed under My Computer, which lists the Galaxy's drive as 1.5 gigs in size, but I am only viewing 750 megs of files when I actually browse the phone. I can only assume the firmware and other files are hiding somewhere within the phone and along with them, the files I need.
Is there any way for me to view everything on the phone including the firmware files? You guys are the super pros at this and I know you all might be able to help me out. Any help is appreciated!
-Arcko
Using adb, you can see all the files on the phone, all the way down to the "/" root. If they're hidden, you can see them using
Code:
ls -a
once you're in the directory they're in...I don't know that you can do it visually (windows explorer).
They are located in programdata/android/.fr/

Thanks for tips, guys.
I'll mess around with ADB and some of these other explorers. Hopefully I can find something.
As for the post about them being in Program Data/Android/.fr, there is my problem. I did not have an SD card in the device when I installed the app. So that directory technically does not exist and I cannot find the files. And no one seems to know where I might be able to find the Hide It Pro directory without an SD Card. I'm convinced it hid the files somewhere near the root or at least beyond what is visible when hooking up the phone via USB.

Actually it is the same as internal, thing is tho the .fr folder is hidden and the only way to access it is through a file explorer to see all the data on your internal memory and search for all pictures and then it will find it the directory will look actually like this
Data/Android/Language/.fr

[APP] X-Plore File Manager - duel pane tree view. Worth checking out.

Love this file manager. Everyone should be using this. Only thing that seems to confuse people, if you wanna copy of move a file to a different location, the file has to be selected from one side, and the destination has to be selected on the other side, then you hit copy of move and it will send it to that location. I usually just keep internal on one side, external on the other, and you can pop things back and forth. Works the same for sending files to cloud storage. However dropsync is the app I most use for that, large files seem to transfer more easily than in file managers. Smaller files work just fine tho.

Yeah it just seems like a lot of people have hard-ons for es and that root browser. I think anybody not using this file manager is just wasting time.

I've been using this app since the glory days of s60v3. all other file manager apps just look like a confusing mess to me compared to x-plore and I don't ever see the day coming when I'll drop it.
that said there does seem to be some kind of changes in google's file system that x-plore hasn't kept up with. moving and copying files on marshmallow roms made after roughly Jan/Feb 2016 has the exact same issues for me on 2 phones. one is an s4 i9505 running custom and the other is an m8 on HTC made google edition firmware. that stops me thinking it's rom related.
without me even describing the issue in any detail do others out there know what I'm talking about ?
does anyone with a real dev level of understanding know specifically what the cause is ? if so I'd like to share that info with the dev at LCG and to bring the app back to it's former and fully deserved glory...

Are you talking about Android 5+ SD card write support? If yes, X-plore already supports it.

I switched from ES to X-plore.
To be honest, ES is more user friendly. X-plore is more like Total Commander, dual-panel styled file manager, which is more geeky.
Features are about the same, but X-plore is better for zip/archive management. I love disk map too, much faster than storage analyzer in ES. Also, ES is a adware/bloatware now, always sending data to servers in China.

no that wasn't what I meant. specifically it's copying and moving files from anywhere to anywhere now results in a kind of hang for up to half an hour depending on the file size. you can leave the process to run in the background or even interrupt it and cancel it (most of the time it will be completed unless you marked more than one file). even if you've cancelled the move or copy and killed the app the notification will stay up for about half an hour before finally deciding it's completed with a toast to confirm it.
in the early days moving one file within the same memory was instant as the index was updated rather than moving anything. once this stopped being the case this weird error began it's journey.
I also use profimail from same author. Great apps
