[Q] Flashing any kernel other than Franco corrupts UI - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I've had a search of my issue but so far not been able to find any related answers
I'm wanting to try the other kernels that are available, Trinity, Elemental etc However, when i flash the different kernels it leaves the UI of the current ROM installation corrupt and I can't even get past my lock screen. Status bar is at the bottom and the rest of the UI is shifted up. Reflashing franco fixes the problem and the ROM returns to normal.
Is this simply a case of needing to reinstall the ROM, and I'm just being lazy and expecting kernels to be swappable like this?
Many thanks for any help.

because you are on franco kernel, you will need to dirty flash your rom first(without wiping anything). franco kernel also changes system files. dirty flash your rom, gapps, and new kernel, then boot up.

Thanks a lot for the fast reply. I'll give it a shot!
Does dirty flashing the rom have an effect on the overall performance? Is it always better to do a clean install when trying to get the most out of your device?
Thanks again.

[Q] No wifi after return to gb

Hello, after a while on ics i decided to go back to gingerbread. So i flashed oxygen rom, franco's kernel, rebooted and wifi states "error". Wifi works with the kernel bundled with thr rom. Any way how to sort this out?
Flash a GB Kernel. Should be a couple of them in the development section
It was franco's kernel for gb. If it was ics one, the phone wouldnt boot at all :/
Weird, should work. Maybe try another kernel and see if it's a kernel issue or rom issue. Did you do a clean install?
Reflash Franco's? Often happens from a flash corruption of some form.
Tried franco´s, glados, steve garon´s and lucid, all give me the wifif error. Only thing that works is reflashing the whole rom again :/

Something is definitely wrong with your setup. Issues like this can be frustrating, especially if you have done everything properly. If it were me, I would start over with a clean wipe ... wipe all zip (attached). Reflash Oxygen, and then one of the kernels I have attached. Don't install any other apps ... give wifi a test. I realize you may have already done this, but give it a try ... nothing to lose.
I use GB extensively, and have never had a problem like yours with Oxygen, DevNull, Deck, CMod 7, or Peter Alfonso's GB ... so hang in there. You'll get it solved. Just be patient ... good luck.
Did a full wipe, flashe cm7.2rc, flashed another kernel and wifi works. Guess ill just stick with it. Or is there any other gb rom with t9 dialer in stock phone app?

My favorite is DevNull with Franco's 12/08 kernel. Not as many options as CM7 ... more basic, but very fast and stable. Here's a link ...

Can't return to ICS based Roms

Hi,
I need some help. I am an XDA lurker and have learned a ton. I am mostly aware of the usual fixes for these things, but I can not return to any other ROM than a CM10. CM10 data and camera are not working great, even though I LOVE this ROM and LOVE these developers, I can't use it yet.
Firtst, my backups are gone, I know, I know. But they are gone. I tried flashing NoSympothy and invisibleK,s stock ROMs but I get frozen at the Galaxy SIII screen everytime.I have tried all the usual system wiping drills, cache, data, etc... Formatted everything. I have downloaded from multiple sources. It seems like it doesn't like ICS now?
I am rooted and UNLOCKED! Woohoo, thanks Adam!!!!!
Any suggestions?
Recoverys to CM10 work. New flashes to CM10 work. But no stock image or stock rom?

You have to flash the stock kernel as well as the ROM. Try flashing the Synergy latest nightly build it includes a custom kernel as long as your bootloader is unlocked.
Thanks,
I had a feeling it was something with the kernel. I wasn't sure what was included though. I think I tried to get synergy from here on my phone and it just kept opening new windows instead of downloading. I will grab the just the kernel from somewhere and let you know. I'll update in an hour or so. Thanks for the next few steps to try. Much appreciated!
That was it THANKS!!!

Stock ROMs include the stock kernel. They will work as a one flash wonder. Your issue more sounds recovery based. Which recovery from which app were you using? It more sounds lime maybe you're still on a kexec recovery which is why you couldn't flash stock but synergy latest worked (or something of the sort, maybe other way around)

[Q] help with faux kernel U/M

hi guys, i'm having lots of problems with faux's kernel both ultimate and mainline. everytime i flash the kernel or use a rom that includes the kernel (clean flash of course) i always get constant random reboots, system FC's, freezing that forces me to battery pull.... pretty much every error you can get besides a bootloop. this is really strange to me because i've ran the faux ultimate kernel when i was running GalaxyMod RLS11. i've tried everything i can think of to fix this, does anyone have any ideas on why i can't use this kernel anymore?

Like ^ said try other kernels, Imoseyon LeanKernel or Ktoonsez KT747 would be good substitutes to start with, you can compare them if needed I have no personal preference for these, as they are both reliable.

LG Phoenix - Distorted Colors

Hello everyone,
Ive seem to run into some trouble, that I cant find a solution too.
I rooted my phone with Gingerbreak V1.20, and flash my recovery with CWM.
I proceeded to add the Nightly Four E rom, than the trouble began.
My colors on the phone display are diffused and distorted, mainly showing the color green and blue.
I read thatI need to flash the stock 2.2 rom again and it would fix it but it didnt.
Can someone help me with this, its quite annoying.

It's a kernel issue. From what you've stated, stock 2.2, your device never got it's official 2.3 update. So, you have an old baseband P505. You should be able to flash ROMs made specificially for the P505 as well as P500 ROMs. Since your device is old baseband, you also have the option to flash P509 ROMs. P509 never got an official GB update so it's always an old baseband device, same with the P506. The catch with P500 ROMs and most P505 ROMs is they are build for new baseband so an additional patch, old baseband, will need to be applied after flashing the ROM. P506 devices use a different touchscreen than the others so you'll have issues installing one of those ROMs.
The old baseband patch is to get your radio, cell signal, working with new baseband ROMs. I hope this wasn't information overload If you used ROM Manager, it's possible that is screwed up the radio too. ROM Manager is not friendly to the Optimus One device family. Android Flash Recovery, link in my signature, is designed for flashing recoveries via fastboot and fastboot mode. You may, especially if color banding is an issue with your recovery, want to reflash your recovery too.
Oh, and have you seen the LG Optimus One FAQ?
I appreciate the reply you've giving, but this is my first time using the Optimus One.
You stated its a kernel issue, how would I go upon fixing a kernel issue?
You also stated I should reflash the recovery, is there a specific recovery I should be using?

For the kernel issue, you can search the forums here to find some that are compatible with your device. The kernel you need will depend on the version of Android you are wanting to install since there isn't a universal kernel for all Android versions. Most of the newer kernels are for ICS( Android 4.0 ) and JB( Android 4.1, 4.2 ). I've never used it but they say Franco has a kernel for GB ( Android 2.3 ). SweetnSour has a kernel for JB and the AndroidArmv6 Team has a new 3.0 kernel for JB.
If you like GB, then you may want to look at this CM7.2 ROM( Direct download ). It is for a P500, so you will need the old baseband patch from post #9 in the LG Optimus One FAQ. I''m using that ROM on my P509 ATM.
As for the recovery, I only suggest reflashing it if you are experiencing color issues with it too. I use CWM 5.0.2.7 Touch, but it will only allow P500 ROMs to be flashed. It's no big deal for me, but for someone new to the game it can be troublesome. CWM 5.0.2.0 is also a good recovery. I don't recommend using ROM Manager to flash anything. If you should decide to reflash your recovery, I would recommend using Android Flash Recovery for Windows( in my signature ) or FlashImage GUI which can be found in the Play Store.
It seems no matter what I do, the color will not correct.
I've tried switching roms, flashing a new kernel and recovery nothing seems to be working..

Do you still have a backup of your stock ROM? I mean a backup that was made while in recovery mode. If you do you can try booting in to recovery and then try wiping and formatting everything but your sdcard. Then restore the backup you made and reboot the device. Other than that, I hate to say it, but I'm at a loss.
I just flashed the CM 7.2 ROM, and franco.Kernel | 2.6.35.10.
I just about did everything, but the color remains distorted once the actual ROM boots up.
Note* If the phone is off and I power it on, the first LG logo has perfect color and clarity but once the ROM kicks in the colors wacks out.
Edit - The phone no longer allows me to access CWM it's just a black screen.

The kernel is part of the boot image. It's possible that somehow your partitions have been damaged.

Yes and no. If you can find or get a hold of the partition.mbn for your device you can use LGMDP to repair the partitions. The P500 one might work too, I'm not sure tho.
EDIT:
You can also install a recovery and ROM in the same process with LGMDP

you only had to flash this on your p505 after the rom https://code.google.com/p/sweetnsour-kernel/downloads/list; one of these
kernel-20130224_1312.zip version4-CFS-P505-P506 for battery life
kernel-20130224_1306.zip version4-BFS-P505-P506 for performance
You have saved my phone my good sir, and I thank you greatly!
Now that I have the correct kernel, can I install different roms now?
Yes, but only ics and jellybean roms , if you use the kernel on gingerbread you will get a lot of troubles...
I just flashed the unofficial CM 10.1, and booted the phone and the color was diffused again.
So I flashed the kernel again and booted the phone, and everything is working perfectly.
Thank you so much!
P.S - CM 10.1 doesn't come with Google Apps or Rom manager, how do I get that back?
To get the google apps you will need to flash a gapps.zip, but first you need to trim the cm 10.1 rom, because
The recommended gapps package is not quite small enough to fit along with the rom in our limited /system partition. The size of the rom can be trimmed by deleting or converting some system apps to user apps, deleting unwanted ringtones and fonts.

Also
Take off anything that can be installed from Play, same for gapps.zip!!

There is a tool designed for that, is in shinobisoft's signature, oone rom editor, download that tool and in the help docs you will find information about trimming, and what can be removed safely... Here it is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959023
If this the first time you are installing roms, i will recommmend you to stay in ice cream sandwich, because is more stable, and it has a lot better battery life than jellybean...

I need some help with installing a custom rom

I've done everything correctly, followed every tutorial, and I'm still not having any luck. I started on stock rooted Lollipop, and all I was getting as installation aborted errors with using Lollipop Autorec. I've since flashed back to stock rooted Kitkat, which I've got the closest with. I've been trying to flash one of the newer nightly updates from Cyanogenmod (20150709 specifically). I've also tried using the first stable release, to no avail. I used one click root to root, which worked fine, and Autorec Kitkat installer for TWRP, which also installs fine, and I can get into recovery no problem. I wipe, I flash, and it boots up, but then it never loads. It ends up being stuck on a boot loop, and it's very frustrating because of how close I'm getting. A Cyanogenmod 11 snapshot flashed correctly, but I'd like to figure out the newer update problem. I'm on LG D800. I'm a complete noob at this stuff, and need a sensei to guide me, please. Thanks in advance.
(Update): I've just now tried installing the newest Resurrection Remix for LG G2, and that sticks me in a boot loop as well, so I have no idea what I have to do. Will update again in a moment because I'm going to try downloading stock Lollipop and the newest TWRP.
(Update 2): So, I've just done what I said I'd do earlier. I flashed the LP bootstack, then Resurrection Remix, then Gapps, and I'm getting a bootloop for that, as well, so I'm calling it a night, and going to bed. Someone please respond. I really need help.
Did you update TWRP? You need to be on the latest version, 2.8.7.1 to flash the newest roms. http://blastagator.ddns.net/twrp.html Put this on your phone and go into recovery and flash it. No wipes needed. Don't reboot when it's done, back arrow to the first screen and select reboot and then select recovery. After that reboots you'll be on the latest TWRP and can flash the LP roms and necessary files or just reboot system and you'll boot up the rom you currently have installed.
Yeah, I ended up trying that, and flashing Resurrection Remix, and I was still getting a boot loop on that, as well.

I just read what you said again, and no, I didn't actually try that version. I'm on TWRP normal version 2.8.6.1. I will probably try what you said, soon, and report back when I do.
(EDIT): Also, am I supposed to flash a baseband and/or a different bootloader? I'm really new to this stuff, and I don't 100% know everything to do, and some tutorials aren't 100% clear, because I guess they're assuming the viewer knows what they're doing.

No baseband, just the bootloader the OP specifies. You just need to read, read and read some more. It may be confusing at first but you'll figure it out. A good thing to have on your computer is here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663369 . It makes it very easy to go back to KK and start over if you need to. I've used this a number of times and have gone back from LP without a problem. Once again, read the OP until you understand what you need to do.

I don't know of any of the caff LP versions that don't state that you need to flash the correct bootstack. If in doubt, don't flash it. If you were trying to install cyanogenmod 12 it doesn't require a bootstack flash but 12.1 does. You have to be sure of what you're trying to install. You might try running this http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-g2/development/rom-stock-lollipop-30b-stripped-t3144195 . Same dev that builds TWRP that I sent you to put this together. It's an all in one flash! And since it's in the at&t section it's not bloated with issues from users of different G2 variants. Just a thought.

I'm assuming that you're on stock rooted LP and you've only tried flashing the RR rom. I haven't flashed that one in a long time but I see on the last few pages of the thread that there are several people getting stuck in bootloops. Is it the rom or their installation? I don't know but I'd seriously try a different rom. The latest Cloudy G2 3.3 is an excellent rom and everything works. It's my go to backup rom. The least confusing way to install it is to follow this,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61396344&postcount=465 although you'd be flashing the 3.3 version not the 3.1. On the aosp side, I've been using Vanir https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=28988 with TK Gapps https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=31524 and this bootstack https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347760740 . Good luck! One other thing I was going to say is that if you want a great camera/video and a stock like experience with a lot of features then go with the Cloudy G2 3.3. It's based on the LG firmware so it's a good place to start and get rid of all of the at&t bloatware.

Oh, in what order do I do everything? Just to make sure.
Edit: Never mind.

One other thing that occurred to me, are you doing full wipes in TWRP? You have to select Wipe-Advanced Wipe-then check off Dalvik,System,Data,Cache (DO NOT check off Internal Storage) and then swipe the slider. I always do it 3 times, press the back button and Factory Reset 3 times. Probably overkill but it works for me. Then go back and do the install.

I've always only ever done the advanced wipe. I'll do the three times thing, this time.

I do it 3 times because on my old Galaxy Note I noticed a few times that when I flashed a new rom a few things that I hadn't installed were still there. So I got in the 3 wipe habit.

Oh, okay. Oh, when do I flash the kernal?

Alright. I got around to trying what you suggested. Still a boot loop on Resurrection Remix, and I don't know why. I flashed the bootstack for my phone, that the post said to, then the rom, then Gapps. So I have no idea what I have to do to get this to work.

Well you're bound and determined to keep flashing the same rom over and over and it doesn't work. If it were me I'd move on to a different rom.
