Hi
This the first time I wanna try a custom rom in my device. Seems rocket science to me . My device is 3 years old now. Well outside warranty. I do not wish to buy a new device, just improve this one.
I have chosen to go with android revolution hd 7.3. I am currently using stock rom with gingerbread. Here are few questions I would like to be answered.
1. How safe is this custom rom flashy vlashy.
2. I use custom battery from anker. Will it be safe for me to flash custom rom.
3. Although there is a nest android revolution hd 7.3 thread post, I would like a step by step guide to flashing android revolution hd rom for HTC sensation for newbie/dummies.(that's me)
Answers are thanked in advance.

since you are on gingerbread firmware you can S-OFF easily your device by following this method
http://revolutionary.io/
then after S-OFF flash 3.33 universal firmware from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
so in order to flash ARHD ROM 7.3 you will need ics firmware
note: follow the instructions to the letter
and before flashing check md5 sums(important)
after flashing 3.33 fimrware your current rom won't boot
don't panic because you have now ics firmware and your rom is gingerbread
the next step is to flash a custom recovery
follow only step 2 from here(flashing a recovery)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
after flashing 4ext recovery the only thing you have to do is:
put your rom.zip(ARHD ROM 7.3)in your sdcard
boot to 4ext recovery
make a nandroid just in case
format all partitions except sdcard
install zip from sdcard
choose zip from sdcard
navigate to the rom.zip and flash it
done
BEFORE starting anything install in your pc sdk tools

install htc drivers
enable usb debugging mode from settings

Sorry I have a little cold feet towards all this. I will reassemble what I understood so far. Please help me check it up thoroughly, since I don't want to be stuck in between while doing it.
Step 1:
BEFORE starting anything install in your pc sdk tools
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152148
install htc drivers
enable usb debugging mode from settings
--- since I am a android developer I have eclipse and android SDK installed. Is that what you means ? And I has also installed HTC sync so I have HTC drivers as well. Should I remove HTC sync and install drivers from the link provided.
Step 2:

Step 9:
install zip from sdcard

Step 10 :
Complete. Reboot and I have revolution HD running.

Guidance appreciated.

about htc drivers since you have sdk tools installed plus htc sync don't install anything else
check with adb/fastboot command if your device is being recognized by pc
the commands are: adb devices
fastboot devices
the adb command use it when you are on the OS android and the device connected to pc
the fastboot command use it when your device is booted to the bootloader(your hboot screen should say fastboot usb)
if in both cases it shows you the device's imei then you are fine to proceed
step 6: from bootloader you will see the recovery option
navigate with volume buttons and select with power button
step 7: nandroid is a backup of your whole current android system
it backups completely everything
from recovery you will see backup/restore->backup
done
step 8: from recovery go wipe/format->format all partitions except sdcard
step 9: from recovery
the order you put is correct:good:
note: if you want put the rom.zip before starting anything to your sdcard.just to have it there when you reach to the recovery step
Thank you. It will be a while before I start the actual process.(after I stop being courage the cowardly dog).
I am hopeful that all will go well, and that this forum and you will be there to help me if I get stuck somewhere.
Finally can you tell me if overclocked cpu and RAM are a good thing in revolution Hd? I mean from cpu era I remember it was a dangerous thing to do.

you can't overclock ram in android but you can with gpu
for months i used to have overclocked my cpu up to 1836mhz and the gpu up to 320mhz without issues
but i think it is pointless
it just drains more battery
if you want to overclock don't overclock much
don't worry.i will be here
I'm pretty new to it too I just pieced it together and did it and I'm pretty happy with the results using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530073 CM11
Gotta few quirks though not sure if that's the particular rom I'm using or just my inexperience. Damned MTC drivers won't work now..
But they work in 4ext (recovery) ... I guess it's a CM11 problem.
Anyway! It's not that hard man just get 4ext installed then copy over the rom zips to the sdcard and install them from recovery after you've wiped all the data 'cept the sdcard!
The best you can do is trying a custom rom into your phone, you will note the difference, try it man!!!
One more thing I noticed when reading up on reviews. Cm 9.1 is a senseless ROM. But compared to android revolution HD it seems to have some issues with battery life and WiFi tethering.
Though wanted to kill sense I will go with android revolution since it is my first time. I guess.
I had called htc customer support earlier because I was having a WiFi sleep issue, wifi sleeps as soon as I turn of screen, resulting in lost sync in audio calls over the web. This is what they told me!!
"Your device is now old by about 3 years or so. Thus there may be incompatibility issues."
Am a newbie but I am not a complete moron. I hate HTC sense / HTC and that stock ROM. But I think the hardware is not to be blamed. Felt like throwing phone at them after hearing that.

Man am getting confused!! Am not going to ask which is the best as i have read forum rules. But please suggest me one based on :
1. Basic phone usage should be super smooth
2. if i can get 1080 p recording ?
3. Wifi tethering is a must
4. My wifi sleeps when screen is off thus hangout and all get latency in voice and it becomes horrible. i have to keep screen on for all the time that i talk on internet.
thanks to this forum i already replaced my battery to a anker 1900mah one. So what now ? which rom. By the way i downloaded Revolution HD already. But the next part is the firmware. That page confuses me i cant understand what to download.

just flash 3.33 universal firmware as i told you
after that you can install all of ics and jb roms
avoid anything that says about firmware in any rom thread
since you have 3.32 or 3.33 you are fine to install any ics and jb rom:good:

I'm not sure I've only tried cm11. No clue about voice in sleep and whatnot, haven't tried it. I'm using CM11 with S/ON and firmware 332 all stock settings w/ the kernel. This is the rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530073
Now I see i need to update the kernel!
anyway if you decide to go with that one just get the 3 files from the download links at the bottom of the first post. The rom, the google mini installer, and the kernel and put them all on the sd card and then load up recovery/4ext.. and install each one after wiping everything cept the sdcard. I haven't done anything advanced, this is all pretty simple. Thinking I'll try revolution but if it ain't broke don't fix it!!
I've had nothing but luck with Sultan's Cyanogenmod11 rom on the 3.0 kernel. It has the minimalism of a "pure android" experience without all the bloatware and crazy aftermarket interfaces that I personally feel detract from the android experience.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530073
Just a word of advice is to use the latest RC of 4ext as your recovery to flash Android 4.4 roms due to SELinux being turned on by default. Beyond that, once you have the recovery installed, installing this rom (or any rom really) is just a matter of rebooting to recovery>wiping data/factory reset>flash rom>flash gapps> reboot
Cheers buddy!

Well I first rooted yesterday, i got S-off, then got clockwork mod recovery and then perma rooted using the zip file and gained access to super user etc.
Then I decided today that I want ics without sense, so i go to virtous or w/e his name is and put his download in my sd card wiped the cache and data etc and didn't back up, so installed his rom and rebooted my phone and it kept boot looping ...
and now i'm stuck with cm 7.1 which I don't like
I just want official 2.3.4 with sense back peacefully that'd be great
Did you install the required firmware?

You didn't mention if you SuperCID your phone or not. That is another required step .
Reply
I don't think there's a fully working 2.3.4 with htc sense rom online. You might have to use another rom.
if you want official rom go here
but if you want ics rom, first of all you have to flash correct firmware for the rom and only then flash rom.
All required info is in each rom thread.
I am having the same problem as OP but I have a back up. When installing Virtous Inquisition I get a boot loop and I have SuperCID.

He told you in his post.
He was running the wrong firmware version - most of the ICS ROMs require the newest firmware versions. Which requires SuperCID.
If you don't have the correct firmware version installed -> Bootloop.
HTC Sensation Recovery Mode
I am trying to go in to Recovery Mode pressing Volume down + Power Button simultaneously and nothing happens.. The phone it's starting normally !
In my experience you have to keep hold of the volume down button and then press the power button for a few seconds, while you keep on holding volume down. That always works for me...
ThanksI fixed that thanks god!!! But now another problem starts.. i turn on the phone and restarts over and over after the green sign. I can't access recovery also. I tried to install a recovery putting this file: PG58IMG in to Memory card and then install but no success it does the same I can't access recovery at all. When i try to access it my phone restarts the same when i try to turn it on. If someone one know what to do please tell me...thank you
If you can't access the hboot screen via vol down+power, check that you don't have fast boot enabled. Settings -> power, uncheck fast boot if it is checked. That should help you get to hboot. You can also take your battery out to make the phone fully reboot. And when you don't need the PG58IMG file anymore, remove it from the sd card.
Ok first off...if you have s-off and your rooted.....you also need to flash the proper firmware.
the easiest way to do this is by following this thread verbatim
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
mentioned in this great thread is the following and I quote
"I really want to use the latest ICS! How do I go about doing this?
I get this PM'd to me a lot. The best way I have seen to do it is as shown (Thanks to PaulGiz)
1. Do some reading as this is a bit different and harder than a normal ROM flash.
2. Best way is to place Firmware PG58IMG.zip, ROM and Superwipe script on the root of your SD Card.
3. Shut down phone and remove SD card.
4. Boot phone to Bootloader (Power+Vol down).
5. Move selection to Recovery, but don't select yet.
6. Insert SD, then select Recovery.
7. Flash Superwipe (ARHD Superwipe will reboot when done, others may not) & then Flash ROM.
8. Power down, then boot to Bootloader. Select Fastboot. Say yes to upgrade.
9. Watch the flash. It will flash 3 or 4 things, then reboot to bootloader. Don't panic when screen goes dark. Bootloader will come back and it will finish flashing.
10. Now select reboot.
11. Wait (up to 10 minutes) for ROM to boot up.
12. Set up your phone and enjoy ICS!!!"
read the whole post all info is there...it's really easy.
Thanks to Kohr-Ah i'm enjoying ICS "no-sense"...and just loving my phone..
Hope this helps.
Hi guys I want to install Virtuous Inquisition and need some help.
I am used to just downloading a ROM, and flashing via ROM manager... however in the virtuous inquisition thread it says you must install new firmware and says something about SuperCID.
Can someone please explain to me what SuperCID is, and how I install the correct firmware. I have read some of the guides but it doesnt make much sense - they seem to be aimed at people who already know what they are doing lol.
Also, if i do install this new firmware, would I still be able to go back to my old rom (android revolution HD sense 3.0) via my backup?
Thanks a lot to anyone who can help.
Install adb +fastboot drivers
Install device drivers
Nav in cmd to fastboot. (Find the sticky for supercid)
Download the 3.24 firmware. PG58.IMG and place it on your sd card.
Find the ics rom you want and put it on your sd card in no folders.
Download android revolutions superwipe script (zip) put on root of sd card.
Boot phone into bootloader (volume down plus power)
It will update your firmware to 3.24 (PG58.IMG)
Once finished choose recovery.
Find superwipe script and flash it.
Find tour ics rom and flash it. Enjoy.
Sorry for being short. Im at work and cant go grab links for you. But that is a quick run down of what you need to do granted you are already s-off and have a custom recovery installed.
Once you have successfully upgraded to ics delete the PG58.IMG zip off of your sd card.

well then you know the basic stuff on how to install ICS to your phone.
1) What you need to do now, is to follow step four(4) on this page.
follow step 4, to get CID
when you got that right, you cid should be 11111111.
2)Now, you need 4EXT. install it from here
3) you need to install Firmware. you need this FW, to get the latest android 4.0.3 with sense 3.6 to work - Firmware from 3.24.401.1 & 3.25.401.101 RUU
found Here
you download it, put it on the root of your phone, just as the ROMs you installed before.
4)you also need superwipe, to clear all errors - found here .look for superwipe. put it on root also.
5)download the ROM you want, i have this. take the XE one, if you want beats (note XE works on your non-xe also)
put it on root.
INSTLLING:
1a)now, do a backup in your recovery, before you do anything, so if your phone gets in trouble, you can go back. DO A BACKUP!!!
1b)start by installing 4EXT.
2)then install the FW (PG58IMG.zip) as if you would install a ROM.
when its done, dont reboot. take out the SD card, and delete the PG58IMG.zip file from your SD card. but sd back into the phone.
3)Now, you do a superwipe, via 4EXT (as a rom)
4)then install the ROM you want. (always check if the rom match the FW)
during the install, it might ask you different questions, so follow carefully..
If you cant go into bootloader, go to Settings>power and unbox the Fastboot. try again...should work now.
this is all
hello,
24 hrs (of everything good) after I installed DarkForest ICS of my HTC XE, my phone reboots continuously. I cannot do an "adb logcat" because it cannot connect to the phone. after 10 reboots, I decided to restore my last back which was an hour after my installation of the ROM.
how can I prevent this from happening again? what might have cause this problem?
thanks,
rdamontz
Hi, have you installed apps that need root before reboots started?
do this
1. Re install the latest firmware properly (if you dont have SuperCID then you have to download the one that matches your CID)
2. Flash Mike's Superwipe in his rom thread
3. Flash DarkForest Rom and you should be able to boot without problem now
thanks for the replies...
i did not add any applications today and everything was fine since yesterday.
i have SuperCID my phone. i will try again to superwipe and re-install the ROM. hope everything will be fine after 24hrs.
Is it the first time you've tried an ICS rom? Are you sure you updated the firmware correctly? Removed the pg image?
Funny how its just one person with reboot, suggesting a user issue, not a chef or ROM issue.
1. SuperCID
2. Flash Firmware from the OP of my ROM thread
3. Flash ROM but choose option to superwipe (no need to flash it separately as i include a tweaked version of mike's superwipe script in the ROM
4. Enjoy
Following these steps and you have a working phone, miss a step out and you have a potentially unstable phone

hello and sorry for the same questions asked over the same issue...
its my first time and im afraid to brick my phone
anyway now im with custom rom and want to go back to stock to receive ota updates.
my phone is rooted and s-off i want to stay s-off with stock rom.
1. is it possible ?
2. will i need to wipe data before the flash?
3. backup needed ?
4. will i get ota updates with stock rom s-off?
5. the ruu is europe 1.47 do i need it to match to my software/radio/hboot?
my phone:
SAGA PVT SHIP S-off RL
HBOOT -0.98.0002
RADIO-3805.06.02.03_M
EMMC-boot
@yonigo870
Since you want to stay s-off and a stock rom then....
1) Yes if you don't want need OTA. No if you want ota
2) Yes
3) If you want to restore your apps/data yes, google SHOULD be okay with contacts/calendar
4) Dont be silly, really, DONT TRY STOCK THINGS ON ALTERED PHONES, thats common sense (at least it should be)
5) You will not use a RUU, you wil use a pre rooted stock rom from the development forum
However, if you want to get ota updates you will need to go s-on and use a RUU, I suggest just getting the latest RUU
My suggesttion, rather leave your phone as is and install a stock pre rooted rom, you can always install the latest stock rom when the OTA is released and its made into a prerooted rom.

@foX2delta i agree with you
@yonigo870 flashing a ruu can actually force you into a bootloop if you flash the wrong RUU the best wasy to get to stock is to flash a pre-rooted stock ROM
heres both links to the RUU and pre-rooted stock ROMs
RUU http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506
pre-rooted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183684

here is a few guides to help with that question i don't know anything about rom manager sorry i use 4ext touch recovery
Custom ROMS:
Custom roms can be found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1146601 or head to the development section.
(Most of these ROMs are pre-rooted, which means that you don't need to root your phone after flashing one of the custom ROM.)
How To: Flash Custom ROMs using Recovery (Method 1)
(You can use your default recovery from Revolutionary tool but I recommend using 4EXTRecovery)
1. Copy your custom ROM "zip" file to your SD card (Root directory).
2. Turn off your phone.
3. Turn on your phone by holding the power button and the volume down button together.
4. Once you see the white screen, choose "Recovery"
5. Make a full wipe/format and clear all cache.
6. Choose "install from sdcard/zip file" and then choose your Custom ROM zip file from your SD card to flash your Custom ROM.
Optional: If you want to use 4EXTRecovery, just flash it like you are flashing your custom ROM(Step 6). Just do it before you flash your new ROM.
How To: Flash Custom ROMs using ROM Manager (Method 2)
(This method might be easier for flashing ROM updates or add-ons)
1. Go to ROM Manager (You can install this software from the Android Market.)
2. If you want to use 4EXTRecovery, please follow steps below, and if you're not using 4EXTRecovery, please skip to step 6)
3. Press your phone's option's button and choose Manual Flash Override.
4. Press OK and choose your phone model.
5. Choose ClockworkMod 3.x (After these steps, your ROM Manager won't ask you to flash new recovery again when flashing new a ROM)
6. Reboot into Recovery and make a full wipe/format and clear all cache then reboot.
7. Now, from your ROM Manager, choose Install ROM from SD Card.
Note: Flashing ROMs can be vary, some custom ROMs may require you to flash some of their own file first. Eg, The LBC Mod ROM requires you to flash "WIPE zip file" before flashing the ROM. Read their instructions carefully to know more.
NOTE: I am not responsible for any faulty or bricked devices after S-OFF or flashing new ROMs. Do it at your own risk.
How To: Flash a ROM in a "Perfect" Way (Method 3 - Recommended)
A great guide from vampire36 for people who encounter the following problems:
1. The ROM you flashed gets stuck on HTC screen (bootloop) while the same ROM works right for others
2. You get the same kernel and radio yet you find your cell to have more battery drain than others
3. Finally some strange force closes and restarts but works perfect for others
So this is basically one of the most perfect way to flash a custom ROM and is a way to help people who face such issues.
Please head to : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1257731 to see full instructions and discussions.

You can enter a boot-loop but I've flashed ROMs too many times to remember (stock & MOD) and never truly boot-looped. You may soft-brick your phone however, but with remedy. Rooting phones & flashing ROMs isn't for the faint-hearted. My phone was dead for almost 48 hours (within 24 hours of purchase). That's how I joined XDA.
Scary. Turned out it wasn't hopeless. Within an hour of Temp Root, I had self-styled flashed CWM Recovery (haven't run into the gung-ho method I crafted yet, at least on these forums), proceeded to acquire Permanent Root afterwards and within the week had flashed 4 ROMs. Invented a few tricks myself .
Point is you have to get your hands dirty. That's why you bought the darn phone in the first place! Pull your gloves & get those hands dirty!

Hello, long time reader, first time poster. I know about rooting, and installing roms and all that good stuff (had a galaxy s2 but odin bricked it). So I'm new to the sensation, and it's quite different from my previous device. My problem is that when I install a custom rom, the phone will boot and all about after about 30 seconds will freeze and restart.
Okay so these are the steps that I followed:
-Used the KGS Utility and chose "s-off"
-Followed all the prompts everything worked out fine.
-Following that I used it to install a custom recovery.
-Followed the prompts everything worked fine.
-Then I used Revolutionary CWM to flash SuperUser.
-App was there on reboot.
-Then I downloaded the AOKP "Initiate Your Swagger"[4.1.2] Rom
-Put it on my SD card and flashed it (after wiping and backing up)
-When the phone boots the setup wizard starts.
-I follow the prompt and when it gets to "Just a sec" the phone freezes then restarts.
Don't know what the problem is here.
I get the same problem when trying to flash CM10. The phone will boot, but then after 20-30 seconds will reboot.

Don't know what I'm doing wrong here. I used an all in one tool to do s-off, and install a custom recovery. Then I rooted it. Then I started trying to install custom roms but they don't seem to work. What am I doing wrong?

Be VERY specific and give a step by step detail of what you are doing to install. Give WAY more detail than you have. And put the detail in a list, not a giant paragraph.
Then we'll look at it and see what's missing.

Sorry about that. Edited my first post. I hope that is enough.
When you say it boots for 20 seconds, what exaclty for you mean.
Does it just replay the boot animation over and over? Or does it actually bring you to a home screen with the status bar and everything for 20 seconds before the reboot? That's a very important difference in diagnosing this one.
Also try installing 4EXT recovery. CWM has been known to cause weirdness with AOSP roms. Plus you may have an older version of CWM thatcan't properly install the newer roms. If you used a .zip in bootloader to flash CWM yuou probably had an older version. I have a special place in my heart for CWM too, but 4EXT is just so much better for the Sensation. (Different recoveries ar ebetter or worse on different devices.)
If you properly installed superuser on your stock rom that you have a nandroid backup for, installing 4EXT is super easy. Just restore the nandroid, which should boot up without problems, download the 4EXT app from the play store, and use the app to install teh latest version of the recovery. No need for ADB or flashing in bootloader. Then try a full wipe and fresh install of AOKP from 4EXT.

It boots up to the homescreen (with no signal) then it reboots.
I will try 4EXT and post my results. Thanks for your help thus far!
EDIT: Tryed installing 4EXT now when I try to boot into recovery it shows the HTC spash screen, then it reboots back the homescreen. So I think my recovery is gone.
EDIT 2: So I got the 4EXT recovery installed. But the ROMs are giving me the same issues (no change). I also noticed as before, when the custom roms boot there isn't any cellular signal.

Update the firmware.. You are on gingerbread firmware (revolutionary soff worked for you means you are on GB) and it won't work on ics/jb roms
Check the firmware thread by kohr-ah in sensation development section and flash universal 3.33 firmware
It will solve your rom problems
