Lcd density - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What lines do we edit in build.prop to change the lcd density? Also, does anyone recommend a particular density that works well?

270 DPI is excellent. See mine below. PLENTY of real estate on that screen now! Oh yeah. And still got room for more.
I personally use jrummy app called "ROM toolbox Pro" however only for changing the DPI.
Here's the link:

Doesn't this affect the size of the on screen keyboard? Stock the size of landscape keyboard is good but reducing the density value seemed to reduce my keyboard size and shifted the keys to the left leaving a gray margin on the right side.

Yep, sorry I forgot to mention that! I did have to make some corrections to the software on my own to fix that. My keyboard is full size after the modification. I've been using the keyboard at full size for so long that I forgot that small detail. if you're not good at programming you can always download "Xposed installer" and the module labeled "App Settings." This would allow you to manually change the DPI settings on individual components like the keyboard, programs, notify actions etc. If you need help I'll be glad to help out if I can.

I went ahead and tested that out to be absolutely sure it would work, and it does. Just be sure when you go to "Samsung Keyboard" in the list and change it to 320 DPI, that you click on permissions and turn it on. (There's a slide on - off switch)

This is one of the first things I'm doing when I root it! Why Samsung didn't do this from the factory beats me!

I made the adjustment and it worked great for the full layout keyboard but when I go to floating or the split it cuts out part of the keyboard. Let me know if that happens to you too. Thanks for your help.

Any update on this? I generally use the floating keyboard as I have found it swiping with one hand works great on this tablet but I would really like a normal looking standard keyboard. If you fixed the issue via code could you share the code/process?

There's more than one way to skin a cat; what I've done instead is install xposed framework and use the App Settings module to control dpi for apps individually while leaving build prop at default. For me not all applications need higher dpi and some like Next Issue fail to render images properly when the density is changed in build prop.

Still looking into this. You can use the Xposed app module to change certain apps or system apps however I've not been able to find the floating and split keyboard resolution yet. For the full screen keyboard changing the DPI back to 320 works fine, however we are still looking into a fix for the other.

I was able to change the system DPI by using app settings and changing DPI for System and System UI. But I am running into the same problem with the keyboard. Even when it is set to 320, the floating keyboard and any pop up windows from the regular keyboard are fubar. I don't want to use the floating keyboard, but I can't find a way to disable it and it seems to come back periodically. Either need to fix the resolution issue or figure out how to disable some of the keyboard modes.

Has anyone found a fix for the other graphical elements of the stock keyboard after a system wide lcd density change?

Not that I am aware of, I think our best bet is just changing the individual apps via app settings on xposed.

Very impressive app. Thank you for making it and great eye for aesthetics!
A bug I am having on my device: (CM7, 800x480, default DPI, Droid Sans changed to the Roboto font that was extracted from ICS)
Very nicely implemented, love the swipeable list at the top.
I often end up adding long lists of numbers, so it's important to see that they are all there
However, if you add a really long list, more than one row of numbers, you can't see clearly the number that you are inputting. Could that box resize automatically - or better, show just the last row inputted as well as the latest number?

The text cut-off on 480x800 devices should be fixed by this weekend. The emulator shows it looking totally fine, and the SGS2 we test it on looks good (though other SGS2 owners have told us of the same issue).
Thanks a lot for all the help, I hope the app comes in useful for you.

Bahh, this drives me nuts. I can't figure out why it shows incompatible with certain phones (not models; for instance, it'll be compatible with some SGS2s but not others) and only on the market (apk works fine). Do you have any ROMs installed? Still, I don't know why that would make a difference. I gotta make a post on xda about it or something :/.
I appreciate you trying to download it from the market, hopefully the apk in the main post will do for now (it is the full version).

From the threads I'm reading, if you set your ROM to custom dpi (pixel density) it has that affect with some apps on the market. Will keep reading into it..
If you do have a moment I would appreciate if you can rate my free app, each rating really helps a lot.

I'd be happy to rate it and provide feedback on the Market but I'm not able too.
I installed the apk though and so far everything seems to be working fine.
A couple of suggestions though:
Change Mortgage to Loan Repayments and provide a bit more flexibility. For example, the ability to choose the loan type from 1 year upwards or alternatively allow for custom input so I can type in whatever I want.
It would also be good to have an additional payments input. So you would enter you total loan amount, interest, loan type, then by inputting additional payments ($50 a week for example) it will tell you how many months and/or years you would save as well as a dollar amount.
This would cater not only for Mortgages but Personal Loans as well. If this kind of functionality was added I'd seriously consider buying it for this purpose alone.
The calculator looks good but I think it needs to follow the same basic look of any calculator with the + - X and / running down the right hand side. Having them at the top throws you off a little.
The ability to rearrange or select which tabs you want to appear at the top. Tipping and Currency are pointless for me so being able to remove them from view would be good.
A fantastic calculator overall though. Love the ICS look/theme to it. Easy to follow and read. When I can install it from the Market I definitely will.

Xposed Framework for per app DPI

I wanted to make sure LG G2 users know that installing Xposed Framework and using the App Setting module allows per app DPI adjustments on stock LG ROMS. I put together a guide if anyone wants to give it a try and threw in some screen shots so you get an idea why you'd want to change your DPI.

Settings: 350dpi, screen (dp) = 1000x1600
Play Store: 200dpi, font scale 137, screen (dp): 1000x1600
FYI Setings FC's on any screen dp above 480 on VS980 (Verizon). Not sure if it's due to the differences in software or if there's something else going on. Pretty much any dpi will work though. I changed it on both com.android.settings (this is the one that FC's) and com.lge.settings.easy (doesn't FC but has no effect) and it didn't make a difference. I'm guessing it has something to do with the tab view....

I got it to work with settings but changed the settings and forgot what it was set to. Lol do you have to reset phone each time and are you using the xposed tablet ui mod in conjunction with this ?also what rom are you using, im on xleanrom 1.2 for att.
Thanks for the guide. I've just had a read through and installed the framework on top of cyanogenmod.
Just a quick question. Is it possible to set everything on the phone to 320dpi (which I'm pretty sure PA defaults to) with one setting or do I have to go through every single app/system and set the DPI manually?
So far I've got Gmail working in tablet mode using with a few different DPI's combine with 800x1280 screen (dp) and the same goes for settings and a tablet UI.
When I lower the DPI in messages, the background image (behind the texts) gets screwed up.
Any ideas?

Yea you can use texdroider_dpi from the Play Store to do a system wide DPI change. I use 400 and it's great with no ill side effects.
If you manually look through the build.prop, you'll see references to an "alternate_dpi=400" which I think is for video out. So putting the system in 400 lets you utilize the screen better without causing any issues or reason to use Xposed modules to fix individual apps.
I think the best solution would be to use texdroider_dpi to set the system default of 400, then use Xposed to change a few specific apps such as Settings, Email, Play Store, etc for dual screen. To be honest though, a system default of 400 is really all that is needed.

Yeah 400 is the sweetspot for me too. Then as you say I just change the DPI individually for the apps I want smaller/bigger than that. Works wonders. When I set Settings to tabletUI, it occasionally crashes for me. When the app has idled for some time and I open it again. Have you had this issue with Settings in tabview?

Thanks. Funnily enough I actually stumbled across this myself last night before checking back into this thread.
Appreciate the advice though and it does exactly what I was looking for.
What settings did you guys end up using to end up with tabletui for settings/gmail/playstore that looked best on the G2's screen?
Are you guys not seeing this? After setting dpi, even using Textdroider, to 400, go into the stock messaging app and tell me your wallpaper hasn't shifted to the left by about a 5th of the screen size.

oh yeah i know about ROM toolbox pro its neat and pretty helpful but i mostly just do the edit build.prop
pretty neat looking home screen , you seem to use nova launcher it has a feature so you could hide that menu apps widgets etc as in kitkat stock makes it look absolutely good , also if you would go more minimal with the app drawer icons so it wouldn't look so over crowded would be awesome to see some screen shot of that .. Ah there is also iconpack called || purity || which is the most gorgeous icons i have ever used

Gotta ask: What's that clock widget in the lower center? I just bought Chronus Pro, but I must have that clock, too.
If I had to guess that's UCCW with Elegante.

Yep. You are correct. It's UCCW with the Elegante skin.
I'll give you the link to it so you dont have to search for it.

Hi Guys,
I was just wondering what the benefit is of a dpi change.
Like you suggested, I changed the dpi to 270, and it resulted in a smaller keyboard (among other things).
I changed it back and in Nova Laucher, I increased the amount of rows and colums which gives the same effect (more icons etc) but leaves the keyboard size intact.
Also I tried the Purity Icon set, but changed it right back to Flato HD.To my taste, it's the best looking icon set I've found to date.

I use exposed and the module app settings. It let's you adjust the dpi of individual apps. Including the system itself. BASICALLY you can scale applications to any size you want letting you take better advantage of the screen real estate. Like applying it to your internet browser would shrink the interface so it would not be in the way as much and more of the webpage would show on screen. It can be very useful especially with apps that are not optimized for a tablet. By doing it to the system itself you can change the drop down menu icon sizes and the amount of screen real estate afforded to you in your launcher. Smaller icons mean more rows and more flexibility with widgets and such.
Btw loving the keyboard on this thing. I can actually get a pretty decent word per minute on this baby.

Thanks for explaining.
Indeed the scaling of apps makes sense especially for phone apps which switch to fullscreen.
Nova launcher handles all the rest you mention fine though.
Is there a way to position the widgets more to the edge of the screen?
I notice that there is an area of half an inch that is not usable by widgets.
Also I'm trying to find a decent solution for removing the google search bar (the one with the microphone), and make that area usable too.
Is there a fix for that?
The keyboard is great and that's why I wanted it full size.
Thanks in advance!
In Nova:
Settings-Desktop
Persisten Search Bar = NeverWidth Margin = NoneHeight Margin = None.
While you're at it:
Resize all widgets = CheckedWidget Overlap = CheckedOverlap When Placing = Checked
These allow you to nudge widgets around and organize them close together.
Thanks Muzzy, exactly what I was looking for!
:good:

I'm using Wanam App Settings to change individual app's DPI in addition to changing the LCD density. I noticed the Google Play store went back to default DPI and I can't change it now.
Any idea what could be causing this?

There is a problem currently with Wanam and it's ability to adjust and save the settings pertaining to the DPI settings. I believe it's a permissions issue. I personally use Xposed and then the module labeled "App Settings." I have thoroughly tested changing the DPI on several system and applications and it has proven to be reliable and stable. If you used Xposed and the App Settings you won't have any issues. Would can also the Jrummy app called jrummy app called "ROM toolbox Pro" however I would only suggest using it for the changing of the DPI settings.
270 DPI is an excellent resolution. PLENTY of real estate on that screen, and still got room for more.
I have personally used it for changing the DPI. However usually I'll just edit the build.prop file.

@Android.Ninja - is it possible to use both Nova Launcher and also Magazine UX at the same time? Can Nova provide me a homescreen that looks/feels/behaves like the Magazine UX.....can't seem to find a way to make it happen. I am rooted, have installed WanamXposed, and RomToolbox Pro. Nope, nope and nope. Other launchers use widgets that rely on native application widgets. Magazine UX relies on a custom widget from Flipboard made exclusively for Samsung. I had contacted Flipboard to ask if they had plans to release the widgets for their regular application and the response was that there were none at this time. They did not say if there was an exclusivity agreement (I did ask) but that doesn't mean that there isn't one.
When it's all said and done one has to decide whether it's worth it or not to stick with magazine ux. To me with the added steps you have to go through once you click content that you see in the tiles for Flipboard content there isn't any benefit for me other than the eye candy on the home screen.

Actually Google Voice Search should turn on the screen, it has a flag set on it that does that.
I can add the option to turn on the screen manually if it doesn't work for some reason.
Do you have a passcode set? (Although I did test that too)

I have a lockscreen set but no passcode. Google Voice starts (I can hear the chime) but the screen doesn't turn on and it immediately quits. Everything else seems to work just fine. I just took a glance at your source, and I noticed that there's no call to wakeUpDevice in the performAction method (for Voice anyway.) Could that be the issue?
I tried adding that and testing it myself, but for some reason when I compile and run on my device, nothing at all works. So clearly I'm doing something wrong on that front

Yeah, it's not there cause there's a flag set with intent.addFlags that turns the screen on.
It probably didn't work cause you didn't wait for Xposed to update the module list. Toggle the module and reboot.

That was the original goal, but after a gesture is detected no more gestures are recorded, so you either have to turn on the screen yourself or not use gestures.
I mentioned it in the repository link description. I have no idea if this is a thing in the SensorHub hardware, the kernel, or SensorHubService I'm hooking, so it needs more time to see if it's possible.

@MohammadAG I've finally gotten the Google Voice trigger to work as intended. I modified the Xposed.java file to include the wakeOnScreen method when starting Google Voice (I'll attach my modified file here.) This change combined with your Secure Google Voice Search module works perfectly. Thanks so much

Bear in mind that it's unsigned and such (I don't know how to sign apks yet ) I just got it working on mine and figured I'd offer you the version that's working for me if you want it. Installing this + OP's secure google voice search module will make it work.
I just installed the modified APK and the secure google voice thing. It does work and wakes the devices, but after the very first time it launches google voice search, subsequent attempts only open google now search, but no voice. I have to close google search for it to work again.
That being said its definitely working better than before!!! Kudos!

I was wondering is it posible to give each swipe option "no action" line?
Thing is that I like double tap wakeup but all other options are wakeing my phone by accident too many times.

Agreed, what I really want is a way to enable/disable some of the gestures. HTC doesn't allow me to do that, it's all or nothing. I was hoping this module would give me that option, but it doesn't

For the sake of helping u improve upon an already decent app i just wanted to post to confirm the color cange bug on the tab S...although i'm aware that it was not created to be used on our device there will definitely be a demand for a free unlimited hack from other samsung owners i'm sure. I suggest adding a list of options available in the pro version to the op so u wont get duplicate feature requests constantly throughout the thread...if i had any recommendations for u it would be to add an on/off button to the notification itself so users can just pull down the bar and make it disappear with one click just like the real toolbox instead of needing to actually open the ap, pressing menu then selecting stop. Lol...looks like i need to edit my own post because i just found out that u have a hold to disable feature built into the floating icon so nevermind on that request as i suppose thats just as good if not better. You might want to make note of that in your first post as well...along with other features/instructions because many users may not read the app description in the play store & a lil redundancy never hurts

Sorry for the confusion k0sh. Here is my earlier problem and requests:
Everything works on my Tab S 10.5 EXCEPT for CHANGING THE FLOATING TOOLBAR ICON COLOR. No matter what color I set it to it never takes. Changing the background color works fine though.
I have a couple of requests if you decide to continue to refine the app:
-Allow user to set the Floating Toolbox icon even smaller then it is now. I have it all the way down and I still find it too big on the tablet in comparison the the OEM Toolbox.
-Allow user to change icon transparency as I find it too bright
-Allow alternate icon or little round button like OEM.
Thanks again k0sh for all the attention your giving this.

Thanks again k0sh for all the attention your giving this.

i'm glad that u went back to edit your post as all of those features are in fact working fine but u may need to change it again because all of the other options u inquired about are already available in the pro version...i can also confirm that color change does nothing
