Xposed Framework for per app DPI - G2 Themes and Apps

I wanted to make sure LG G2 users know that installing Xposed Framework and using the App Setting module allows per app DPI adjustments on stock LG ROMS. I put together a guide if anyone wants to give it a try and threw in some screen shots so you get an idea why you'd want to change your DPI.
LG G2 Xposed framework guide.

Tested on my rooted Verizon LG G2 (with 1st OTA).

Yeah I'm using this and it's great. I have put tabletUI on settings and play store too.

Settings: 350dpi, screen (dp) = 1000x1600
Play Store: 200dpi, font scale 137, screen (dp): 1000x1600

FYI Setings FC's on any screen dp above 480 on VS980 (Verizon). Not sure if it's due to the differences in software or if there's something else going on. Pretty much any dpi will work though. I changed it on both com.android.settings (this is the one that FC's) and com.lge.settings.easy (doesn't FC but has no effect) and it didn't make a difference. I'm guessing it has something to do with the tab view....

I tried those settings I cannot get split screen to show the only thing I'm getting is the smaller text and settings but not the split.

I got it to work with settings but changed the settings and forgot what it was set to. Lol do you have to reset phone each time and are you using the xposed tablet ui mod in conjunction with this ?also what rom are you using, im on xleanrom 1.2 for att.

Thanks for the guide. I've just had a read through and installed the framework on top of cyanogenmod.
Just a quick question. Is it possible to set everything on the phone to 320dpi (which I'm pretty sure PA defaults to) with one setting or do I have to go through every single app/system and set the DPI manually?
So far I've got Gmail working in tablet mode using with a few different DPI's combine with 800x1280 screen (dp) and the same goes for settings and a tablet UI.

When I lower the DPI in messages, the background image (behind the texts) gets screwed up.
Any ideas?

Yea you can use texdroider_dpi from the Play Store to do a system wide DPI change. I use 400 and it's great with no ill side effects.
If you manually look through the build.prop, you'll see references to an "alternate_dpi=400" which I think is for video out. So putting the system in 400 lets you utilize the screen better without causing any issues or reason to use Xposed modules to fix individual apps.
I think the best solution would be to use texdroider_dpi to set the system default of 400, then use Xposed to change a few specific apps such as Settings, Email, Play Store, etc for dual screen. To be honest though, a system default of 400 is really all that is needed.

Yeah 400 is the sweetspot for me too. Then as you say I just change the DPI individually for the apps I want smaller/bigger than that. Works wonders. When I set Settings to tabletUI, it occasionally crashes for me. When the app has idled for some time and I open it again. Have you had this issue with Settings in tabview?

Thanks. Funnily enough I actually stumbled across this myself last night before checking back into this thread.
Appreciate the advice though and it does exactly what I was looking for.
What settings did you guys end up using to end up with tabletui for settings/gmail/playstore that looked best on the G2's screen?

Are you guys not seeing this? After setting dpi, even using Textdroider, to 400, go into the stock messaging app and tell me your wallpaper hasn't shifted to the left by about a 5th of the screen size.

Yes I've seen the issue but I don't use the stock messaging I use Sliding Messaging. I like most of LG's UI but the stock messaging is just plain ugly.

Just choose a photo from your own gallery. It will scale to fit your screen. I am on 380 dpi btw
I am having problem on quick view window case. After changing my system dpi to 380, the screen doesn't fit the quick view window anymore. I don't know what specific app to configure in xposed app settings. Any idea?

My first Android App!

Hi,
This is my first Android app, NBLauncher. It's a simple app that let you add shortcuts to apps as buttons in the notification bar (expanded view), so you can quickly launch an app from anywhere (as long as you have access to the notification bar). I've seen similar apps on the Android market, but I haven't seen one that uses multiple buttons/apps on the same notification line. NBLauncher currently allows a maximum of 15 buttons (three lines of five). After installing, launch NBLauncher from app drawer to configure what apps you want to add to notification bar. Use the up/down arrows to rearrange the order of the buttons. Make sure to click "Done" when exiting. You'll then see the NBLauncher icon on the notification bar. Pull down the notification and you'll see the buttons to launch your app. It also saves the list of apps so you when reboot the phone, it auto-starts with your configured list.
Two minor things that I haven't figure out. Maybe you guys could help.
1. Each notification line requires it's own notification icon in the bar. So if there are three lines of buttons, there will be three separate icons. I have made only one visible and the others invisible, but I have no idea how to get rid of the invisible icons while keeping the notification. Any ideas?
2. During installation of the app, Android lists accessing phone book/contact as one of the things that the app does. But I am not touching the phone book or any contact info. How can this be? How does it determine what an app could do? Based on permission? This obviously has an negative effect of scaring people away from the app
Feed backs and suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
can you give us a little screenshots before we give it a go?..
Nice, I like it, much better then App Launcher, which costs $2 right now.
I couldn't find it in the Market though, did you pull it?
Only complaint so far is that it doesn't play well with lcd density changes. I'm set at 161, so the UI is a little cramped when setting up, but the launcher in the notification tray scales perfectly and looks good. There are several market apps that don't scale well with density changes, so it's not even that big of a deal. Spare Parts, MixZing, Mint.com, and Shazam don't either, just to name a few.

If minSdkVersion is not set in AndroidManifest.xml, it assumes a minimum version of 1. In the SDK version 4(ish?), a few new permissions were added, so if minSdkVersion is below that, those permissions are included whether you need them or not. Read Phone State was among these.
TopShelf10,
I only tested the app on Droid X (my phone) and Evo 4G. Haven't test it on Samsung Galaxy series yet. I noticed button events in the notification view behave differently on Droid X and Evo 4G, so I had to code around it. I guess it's different again on the Galaxy phones. I'll need to get my hands on a Galaxy phone

Sure. As long as you site the source and keep me updated on any findings so I can update my app accordingly.
To be more specific, I think the problem is how button events/intents are handled vs. default intent of the notification content view. I'll try to post some code when I get home.

I think I am really going to like this app. Works great on my rooted Incredible. Any chance you could add an option to hide the icon in the Notification Bar?
Edit: Thought I would mention that I'm running a ROM using the EVO framework. So I couldn't tell ya if it'll work on a stock HTC Incredible.
Well this looks great, just installed it. It doesn't work though. I press on an app, it seems to highlight, then the notification bar just closes.... Any help?

I installed the spare parts plus and found this app too. I have changed my vm heap to 64m for testing purposes and so far its a great app. Not much info inside the app as far as explaining vm heap growth etc but as long as you know what you are doing this is an excellent tool
I would like to add that a reboot option after changing vm heap or at least notifying that the susystem should be rebooted to stick settings wouldn't hurt. Very nice app
What's the hex editor do? Is it like GameCIH or something?
As for everything else, I'm a bit phobic of bad things happening to my phone, so I won't PERSONALLY utilize it, but great app, dude.

And if we use Amon_RA recovery?
Oh great. so I just wanted to try disabling boot animation and apparently your app writes all the values into the /data/local.prop - even these that are unchanged.
Well, my problem was that the read out LCD density values were wrong and so my phone thought after a reboot I had a 30x45 pixel screen -.-
Took me half an hour to delete that file so I could use my phone again. Change this, it takes only a few more minutes to program that only changed values are written in the file!
By the way, I'm using a HTC Magic with CM6.1, 2708er Kernel and 2.22.28.25 radio.
I hope that helps.

Dalvik is the name of the virtual machine used in Android. Heap size has to do with the amount of memory reserved for apps in easy words I guess.
Nevertheless if you don't know what you are doing, you are not supposed to mess with those settings. The devs of your favorite ROM will set everything up to the best possible configuration I assume.

the app reads existing settings from the different prop files and also current settings and writes those. It shouldn't change anything unless it is not defined. Can you send me a copy of your .prop files so i can review? And or send me a screenshot of what the settings are on read? Thanks.
Also you can use the zip file to reset from cwm if settings are messed up.

Thank you, I will look into fixing that.
Update: I flashed IOAP to my Samsung Galaxy S4 to see what the differences may be and if my issues were related to the ROM or my port and I found, the Galaxy S4 version is newer than this and it looks like they removed that option, all together. Som other things are taken out. I will have to wait for an update to (flo) before I can look into this more, I think but, maybe they removed it because they couldn't get it to function. Also, the Black UI is working on my phone so, I have to look into that more.
This rom is pretty fantastic so far despite the silly clown mask boot screen. Snappier and more responsive than Im used to from the latest cyanogen. I also recomend the Gapps with the custom font.

It's a great ROM and runs very smoothly on the KFHD 7. The masks are like the Infamous Developers logo. Like Cyanogen's "Andy". They make great ROMs. Plain and simple. Try it or don't, your choice.

Couple of quick issues. Any dpi other then 240 the side navigation bar disappears, and installing pretty downloaded apks, the install button is unclickable. Other then that great rom, lots of features, quick and snappy response times, and the Guy Fawkes masks sold it for me lol. Clean install coming from BsHarmony (great as well). Is anyone else having these issues?

In the build.prop, dpi is set to 213 which is standard for our tablets. I have not tried it at any other setting. As far as installing .apk's, I have had no issues. Have you gone into Settings -> Security and enabled "Unnown Sources" ?

PartimusPrime makes some great Bootanimations that you can easily use as a replacement to the mask, if you prefer. I like the "CMRingOfFire" especially for the KindleFire. The 800x800 download looks great. His second post on that thread tells you how to use it as a replacement.
Went back to 213 from 240 and navigation bar disappeared, unknown sources selected and verify apps test on setting and turned off. Selecting the apk, strolling till the word changes from next to install and it's not allowing me to click. Cancel button works but nothing else. I use ES Explorer, auto install to over come the issue and 240 isn't an issue much. (full screen quick settings sucks but oh well )

I don't know what you did or why you are at that point but, personally, I would go back into recovery and Wipe, rinse & repeat. I would just start over and reflash everything.
Is it me or is there no navigation in landscape mode and I don't see an option to enable it.

Change your LCD to either 240 or 320 dpi. I had the navigation bar disappears before when in landscape mode and this solves it.
Edit: Did a clean install with your 2/6 update like you advised earlier in the post and didn't make a difference.

Hmm, ok. I'm waiting on the next update to be uploaded. Maybe that will fix the problem you are having. I know mrimp said he is working on many bugs. I'm not sure exactly what they are but, it is buggy. I can't seem to get a logcat, somehow I borked it or something. lol
And, the issue you were having with the installer was what I was referring to when I said to do a clean install. I am unsure about the navigation bar thing.

Does anyone recommend an app to change dpi on this tablet? Most I found are only designed for phones or outdated. Thanks

Yep, it's similar.
270 DPI is an excellent resolution. See mine below. PLENTY of real estate on that screen now! Oh yeah. And still got room for more.
I personally use jrummy app called "ROM toolbox Pro" however only for changing the DPI. Sometimes I'll just edit the build.prop file as well too.

oh yeah i know about ROM toolbox pro its neat and pretty helpful but i mostly just do the edit build.prop
pretty neat looking home screen , you seem to use nova launcher it has a feature so you could hide that menu apps widgets etc as in kitkat stock makes it look absolutely good , also if you would go more minimal with the app drawer icons so it wouldn't look so over crowded would be awesome to see some screen shot of that .. Ah there is also iconpack called || purity || which is the most gorgeous icons i have ever used

Hi Guys,
I was just wondering what the benefit is of a dpi change.
Like you suggested, I changed the dpi to 270, and it resulted in a smaller keyboard (among other things).
I changed it back and in Nova Laucher, I increased the amount of rows and colums which gives the same effect (more icons etc) but leaves the keyboard size intact.
Also I tried the Purity Icon set, but changed it right back to Flato HD.To my taste, it's the best looking icon set I've found to date.

I use exposed and the module app settings. It let's you adjust the dpi of individual apps. Including the system itself. BASICALLY you can scale applications to any size you want letting you take better advantage of the screen real estate. Like applying it to your internet browser would shrink the interface so it would not be in the way as much and more of the webpage would show on screen. It can be very useful especially with apps that are not optimized for a tablet. By doing it to the system itself you can change the drop down menu icon sizes and the amount of screen real estate afforded to you in your launcher. Smaller icons mean more rows and more flexibility with widgets and such.
Btw loving the keyboard on this thing. I can actually get a pretty decent word per minute on this baby.

Thanks for explaining.
Indeed the scaling of apps makes sense especially for phone apps which switch to fullscreen.
Nova launcher handles all the rest you mention fine though.
Is there a way to position the widgets more to the edge of the screen?
I notice that there is an area of half an inch that is not usable by widgets.
Also I'm trying to find a decent solution for removing the google search bar (the one with the microphone), and make that area usable too.
Is there a fix for that?
The keyboard is great and that's why I wanted it full size.
Thanks in advance!
In Nova:
Settings-Desktop
Persisten Search Bar = NeverWidth Margin = NoneHeight Margin = None.
While you're at it:
Resize all widgets = CheckedWidget Overlap = CheckedOverlap When Placing = Checked
These allow you to nudge widgets around and organize them close together.
Thanks Muzzy, exactly what I was looking for!

I'm using Wanam App Settings to change individual app's DPI in addition to changing the LCD density. I noticed the Google Play store went back to default DPI and I can't change it now.
Any idea what could be causing this?

There is a problem currently with Wanam and it's ability to adjust and save the settings pertaining to the DPI settings. I believe it's a permissions issue. I personally use Xposed and then the module labeled "App Settings." I have thoroughly tested changing the DPI on several system and applications and it has proven to be reliable and stable. If you used Xposed and the App Settings you won't have any issues. Nope, nope and nope. Other launchers use widgets that rely on native application widgets. Magazine UX relies on a custom widget from Flipboard made exclusively for Samsung. I had contacted Flipboard to ask if they had plans to release the widgets for their regular application and the response was that there were none at this time. They did not say if there was an exclusivity agreement (I did ask) but that doesn't mean that there isn't one.
When it's all said and done one has to decide whether it's worth it or not to stick with magazine ux. To me with the added steps you have to go through once you click content that you see in the tiles for Flipboard content there isn't any benefit for me other than the eye candy on the home screen.

[REQ] Multi DPI Stock Camera

Is anyone able to make a multi DPI version of the stock camera app? I tried modding it for 560 myself with the latest APKTool but the recompiled APK doesn't work.
It works you just have to be patient and modify the dimens xml file. It takes time and patience. My dpi is 500 and this is how my camera looks....

Yeah, you gotta install
apktool if framework-res.apk
apktool d SamsungCamera4.apk then go into res/values/dimens.xml and modify every DIP you see by multiplaying it by original dpi (640/560) which equals 1.14. So if you see 640*1.14 = 729.6 etc...
Takes a loooong time,
Just use google camera isntead lol

Tried your apk brava, but unfortunately it force-closes for me.
Gonna have to give the apk compiling stuff another try, I tried to remove the brightness bars from the notification panel but failed to create an apk as well.
I did mine for 520 dpi. It's not perfect but enough for me.
About the force close, I always do a cache and dalvik cache wipe after replace a system apk and before open it, just in case.

Google camera is a very decent camera, although I prefer the touchwiz camera, I guess we can live for now until xposed-app settings comes around.
hello, same problem here..
i write myselfe a tool to replace all values in dimens.xml with OldValue/(newDPI / oldDPI) so i get this math 640 / (480/640) -> 640/0.75 and this works as well. but i cant start the camcorder. Blackscreen also.
if you change the camera to frontfacing than recording works... also recording with 640x480 works as well. only higher resolutions dosnt work
and the other "camera modus" dosent work. the cam is only freeze.
but i tried this all on my g925F
maybe someone have a little time... than view this file, its very intresting =)

If I understand correctly, the correct method to install this would be to replace the default .apk file with the one here, wipe cache and dalvik.... What about permissions?
