Nexus 5 Custom Dock Help - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, a friend and I recently decided to try our luck at creating a custom dock for the nexus 5. What we're shooting for seems pretty ambitious, so I'd like to hear what you guys think.
For Dock Materials, we're thinking either wood or aluminum. I have access to a CNC Mill, plenty of aluminum and there are a few places I could get to make it in my area if need be. The same goes for wood. I'm not exactly well versed on how well aluminum would work because of the next big part of the dock. We plan to implement a wireless charger into it. Would heat from the charger be able to heat up the aluminum enough to damage the phone? I also need some help choosing a charger that could work in the dock. I'm thinking about the Ruix Wireless Charger (http://amzn.com/B00EBQ8RSG) because it seems reliable and fairly cheap. If anybody has experience with this charger, it would be greatly appreciated as well.
The second part of the design is an LCD display on the front. We've been thinking E-Ink displays because they're thinner and less battery-hungry than LCD displays. We have contacted a possible retailer and are waiting to hear back, but do you guys think this is a good way to go, or should we go with LCD? Another thing is actually programming the screen to work. I was thinking we could use Pebble Source Code and just trick the screen into thinking it's a pebble so we could use pebble apps and such. The screen will be a different size though, so i was thinking that could be our issue. I'm not quite fluent in C, but I'm learning at a fast rate and could probably change it up a bit if need be.
We were also considering adding speakers, but that's not a very high priority, so I won't bother you guys with that. Also, I forgot to mention, our 3D model also has a hole for routing a regular cable up to the phone in case it doesn't work with QI wireless charging.
Any help would be much appreciated! (Even if it's just an explanation to why it isn't feasible)

I like the idea of using wood. I am not sure, but I think aluminium is not a good material to use in your project... Unless you use it as a base material and some kind of plastic (forgot which one exactly) that could blend well in the design and color, or maybe a white to give a different accent?
There's a lot of cheap chargers for sell on dealxtreme (dx.com), and some nice projects to get you started on Instructables.
The LCD part, I think it doesn't matter much if it's a LCD or e-ink, since the charger will be connected all the time, but IMHO, I think e-ink would work better with an aluminium design. You should try to do it with arduino, like this one http://www.instructables.com/id/LOG-Wireless-Temperature-Monitoring/
Hope it helps, and good luck

Thanks for the input! I think you're right about the wood, so I'll probably end up using that. I think I'll have aluminum accents along the side though. As for the arduino board, I have no experience with them. How finicky are they when it comes to space and/or heat? I would need to do a redesign if I wanted to put it in. I'm gonna finalize the design ASAP then start cutting. I can post updates as I build it if anybody cares enough.

(Universal) Dock useable with protection cases?

Hi there,
I am looking for a charging dock that accommodates my DHD without me having to remove the protection case (Case-Mate Barely There).
Does anyone have a suggestion for me? I just need it to charge the device, no further USB connectivity features needed.
I guess the usual Desire HD docks are all fitting so tightly that a case won't work with them, right?
Anyway, if you have any tips for me, I'd appreciate it
I'm looking for the same thing.
I'm signing up under this one as well
Sent from my HTC Desire
I've just received my Spiderpodium which does the job and is futureproof.
Its basically a rubbery type material which you can bend into various configurations and I am using it in the car right now and it works wonderfully.
I have bought a black one, it may not look as nice as custom made docking stations however is very practical.
Here's a link where it is demonstrated on an IPOD Touch however, I am using it with my DHD with a Otter commuter case attached and it works brilliantly.

Spiderpodium looks nice, wish there was something like that, but with the option of those sticky, sucky things that most gps use to attach to windows etc

My main reason for going for the Spiderpodium was because I did not want to get the windscreen "sucky" thingy. With this it leaves no marks, just sticks into the grills of my Mk5 golf which has the grills at a decent level to use sat-nav at a good viewing angle. It also holds the Wifes i-phone 4. If there is a need to, I can easily remove it from the car and use as a dock too.
Nice but I need one that I just slide in and it will charge my phone without need of connecting usb cable manually

Yup, same here - I just want to plug my phone straight in without fiddling with cables..
I have one of those cheap Chinese-made docks, I used a dremel tool to make the recess a bit bigger. It's not pretty but it fits in nicely.
I would be amazed if someone made a dock for a case. It's hard enough to get a dock for a phone, which sells millions, I would be really surprised if someone made a dock for a case which sells only in it's thousands.
Take a look at the Clingo -
http://hemorrdroids.net/clingo-universal-podium-phone-and-media-desk-stand/
It does require you to plug in the USB charger, but as I say, I think you'll have to live with that.

Hmm that doesnt look too bad , neither does the spiderpodium though..
So, has anyone found an active dock that will work with a protective case on the phone.
I really miss having a cradle for my phone at work, but cant be doing with taking it in and out of it's gel case all day long...

Exactly same problem. I would like to have car holder for case mate and my dhd.
Universal car holders are so big and ugly.

iGadgitz Gym Armband

Hey whats up guys,
I just purchased this item from Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XYQWXI)
I just got this in the mail today, have not gotten a chance to use it.
I will try to give it my best to review this product.
-Product feels pretty good, solid build quality, doesn't feel like cheap ****
-The phone fits perfectly well if you are NOT using a phone case. I tried to put the phone in with a TPU case, and it did not fit.
-Trying it on my arm, it feels pretty tight and snug. (Not sure if that's how armbands are supposed to feel. My arm feels constricting a bit, I don't think this is feasible if you are going to work out your arms?) ... But I will update this part after I have used it tonight working out my back and biceps.
-There's a cool section for your to put your headphone wire in so it doesnt hang all over the place.
Check out the pictures, I will try to update this more. If you have any questions I can try to answer them here.

Thanks for the review...I"m looking forward to your update. I'm very interested in knowing how this will work for you during arms workouts...and how it would appear to hold up to sweat.
On that note, what earpieces do you use that won't break down from sweat quickly?

Alright in response on how it felt when I was working out my arms. Either I am not an Armband type of guy (I usually wear a tank top or sleeve cut off shirt). I feel as if this thing gets in the way. Not sure if u guys know what I mean when you work out upper body and u like your arms to be free of anything.
The arm band felt like those things you put on your arm when yhou are testing your blood pressure at the doctor... very tight especially if you are working out your biceps.
I think this is good if you do cardio, or lower body exercises that do not require the use of the arms...
The material was okay in regards of sweat... I did not notice it leaking through and touching my phone at all. I personally thought it was going to be very itchy and annoying like how some kneebraces are now made with that neoprene type of material.
With the headphones, I have some type of rubbery material heaphones. There like 10 bucks or something I dont really care if they get messed up though.
Throughout the whole workout experience I can remember adjusting it almost after every set so it can get comfortable... Towards the end of my work out I just put it in my pants... LOL
So if you are not the arm band type of guy, do not get this. Only use it for cardio exercises or lower body so it wont bother you as msuch as it bothered me working out upper body.
Also the wire management part in the first Amazon provided picture, is VERY small you cant fit fat wires or many layers of wires if you guys understand what i mean...
With the front protector clear plastic thing, it wasn't too bad, basically it kind of felt like those ZAGG invisihields over your phone.
Gave it another go last night working out abs and legs, it didn't bother me as much compared doing upper body.

Noreve Tradition B Case Review

Hi folks got this today for the mrs, just posting my thoughts on it
It's quite a bit more than I've spent on a case before but looking at the other alternatives at the time, decided it was the best of limited options...
I wanted a case I wouldn't have to remove completely every time the phone needed charging and with as much protection as possible (for when thrown in a bag with keys, brushes, coins and anything else imaginable...)
Standard shipment from France to the UK was quick and traceable (2 days dhl) I'd ordered a custom color though so total time was 2nd April to today.
The Case
Packaging & Presentation
It comes in a nice box and drawstring bag, before even seeing the item you feel 'this is a quality product' good marketing by them for sure.
Initial Impressions
Looks a bit jagged on some edges with a definite 'man-made' feel to it, overall it seems like a really good quality case but I do have some concerns detailed below.
In Use
Phone in the case it feels solid and secure, when shut it doesn't feel like it's going to open, discovered a certain push/slide technique to shut with minimum effort.
The 'fold away part' that allows you to fold it away for placing in dock is very secure (a little bit too secure for my liking but maybe with time it will become easier...at the moment i'm noticing sort of 'pressure marks?' on the screen when opening it, there's definitely a technique required to avoid putting too much stress on the phone when undoing this bit.
In The Dock
That is how it should be unfortunately the clasps on the power button side and bottom IMO aren't quite secure enough and missing an extra one (which would cover the headphone port...) so unless you place emphasis on holding the phone *and the case* when putting it in the dock it'll easily end up like this
I had hoped I wouldn't have to make any alterations but I feel it will definitely need some refix/double sided tape as per the simplism? version.
If the phone didn't drop out of the case in the docking procedure sometimes it would've been perfect but being a realist I do understand the complications of creating a case for this dock...
Overall I'm slightly disappointed that it didn't do exactly what I hoped it would, out of the box, but it's certainly well made and feels good in normal use.
Looks like a great product. I'm planning to order the Ivoire colour. Just a few question, how does the leather feels and does it add much thickness to the phone ?

The leather feels really soft and it does add quite a bit of thickness, it feels slightly padded and gives a little when you touch it, in comparison to a leather case i had for my s2 which was hard with no padding. If i get the same phone when my contract is due for renewal in a few months id be looking for a case of the same sort of quality but to be used with a wireless charger. Im not that impressed with the procedure of docking it in this case but it may become less of a chore as it wears a bit.
I'm not looking to get a dock any time soon so docking isn't a problem to me. Thanks, I'll be ordering one next week

Galaxy S 5 Car mount

Recommend the best car mount here for Galaxy S 5.
A bit more expensive, but the CraigsDocks Dock is billet aluminum and low-profile and is true one-hand operation and adjustable to work with S2, S3, S4, Note series and now the S5.
http://www.craigsdocks.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-s4-note-2-3-car-dock/
I've had mine a year and won't have to buy a new one when I upgrade to the S5 because it fits all large Samsung superphones.
It's also adjustable to work with ALL cases, including the extra large cases that have built-in batteries.

I will be hoping to get The Air Dock shortly after my S5. This will be the best car dock hands down. Just need to make sure the S5 wireless charging covers or stickers don'd take long to arrive.

For everyone that wants an affordable car dock WITHOUT glass suction cups, I would get this:

The air dock is what ultimately tipped the balance for me getting an S5, after seeing it I knew built-in Qi charging was a must have and since Sprint only offers the Nexus 5 in 16GB flavor (not nearly enough, I've got 15GB of stuff on my SD card today which easily exceeds the 12GB formatted capacity, not to mention 2 years from now).
Hope they will make something like this one :

Another vote for Craigsdocks. Absolutely the most adaptable car dock out there. Very well designed and crafted. Well worth the the cost.

It looks nice but the expense of it, $70 +20 for the charging coil, then still need a car charger so there's another $30(for an OEM)its a lot of money.
I got one of these a while back and its quite good, just make sure to hold the back of the phone whilst removing or sometimes the back cover comes lose on a clip or two with S4, the magnetism is quite strong.

Because its so hard to plug in USB lol, is it really worth an extra $75? Also there's no way that thing could output 2A so charging is going to be much slower, just my opinion.

have you ever used this before? I'm curious to know if it would cause any damage to the internals of the CD slot. I see it has amazing reviews at Amazon (which I trust for the most part) but wondering if you had any personal experience with it...

notice my cd changer is curved out but the rubber "fins" still fit snug and very sturdy. They are rubber and do no damage. if for some reason it just will not fit in there on your car model, you can always send it back worry free (with Prime) but it shouldn't be a problem. the grip has a light rubber pad and is controlled by a spring action adjustment. I love it because i can easily place my phone into it by pushing my phone up and in. I take it out with the same motion, press up and pull out. it is made in Korea and the material and parts are very well made.
I really don't know why some of the people here are buying 50-70 dollar suction phone mounts. that is a total rip off.

Upon inspection of both of my vehicles, it looks like it will work really well and actually sit at a great height (within arms and eyes reach) and not block any controls to anything else (only blocking a clock in my Civic and a clock/temp screen in my Highlander)

I ordered a similar one, well basically identical, and it fits superbly in my 2008 honda accord exl. It sits just below all the controls. I was some what worried about it not reaching out far enough as the cd player is recessed when compared with all the radio and nav controls. But it's about as perfect as possible. The best part about this mount in my opinion is that it keeps a person like myself from having to many items on the windshield. Without this I'd have- Radar Detector, Phone, toll tag, and gps, way to many things, phone being the largest of them all. Anyway, I'll take some pictures and maybe a mini review later. I highly recommend to anyone who want a good out of the way docking solution.

I've just seen a sleeve that will be out later this month:
http://www.amazon.com/Tablet-Sleeve...=UTF8&qid=1449678769&sr=1-11&keywords=pixel+c
I wouldn't mind a faux leather flip cover for times I know I will not be using the keyboard for a while.
I am looking for a leather case with kickstand function. Anyone seen anything?
I am looking for something like this http://www.amazon.com/MoKo-Slim-Fit-Multi-angle-Android-Samsung/dp/B00A9G985S/
With automatic sleep/wake-up function. I use very simillar case with Nexus 10 and I am very satisfied with that.
Anyone seen anything?
I think case manufacturers are going to be running into problems since the Pixel C uses a lot of magnets in the tablet chassis to attach it to the optional keyboard. Putting on a standard cover is going to negate this benefit I would imagine.
I'd like to get a sleeve, sort of like the one posted earlier, that will allow me to protect my Pixel C and keyboard when I throw in in a bag or backpack since I'm not sure how resistant the aluminum body will be towards scuffs and scratches.

I need a simple book cover type samsung like case
They could use all the magnets to benefit the folio type case set up like samsung uses the clips in the back of the tab s 8.4
I am THRILLED to be using again my Saddleback leather sleeve from my original iPad. Funny, only couple years ago the iPad came out but the Pixel C + keyboard are about the same thickness Tablet alone would be too loose. Not sure if they make it anymore, but maybe check ebay?

its funny but i am also using my iPad 3 case that fits the Pix C + keyboard very nicely
I ordered this sleeve which will be here tomorrow: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005D1R07M
Based on the dimensions, should be a good fit. Comments mention a magnetic clasp which should work well! We'll see how it is for just $4.
I'm looking for a magic/smart cover like the one for the N9 (https://goo.gl/79fapJ), anyone seen anything like it for the C? It should only cover the front and attach via magnets.

Yeah, this please. Surprised Google didn't think about users who DON'T want a keyboard, just a thin foldable cover for their tablet screen.

exactly what I was referring too with my Tab S 8.4! We need this now
all the people that got it for just a tablet and not a "c"onvertible
The Nexus 9 smart cover was one of THE worst engineered covers I have every used! In other words, it was just a big piece of cr** and not worth the money. Let's hope they bring us something better.

Don't confuse it being a piece of crap to it not doing what you want it to. I was sceptical about it at first, but after a while it started to work extremely well for me and now I don't want anything else anymore!

The magnets in there are just to weak so it comes off the screen to easily (yes, I am using it on the correct side), or does not hold the tablet in place when used a a stand. That alone is a no-go for me.
Also, as a kickstand, depending on the position, it makes it very hard to access the volume- and powerbutton(s), or will accidentally press the buttons down sometimes. This is unacceptable.
Anyone have any input on this sleeve:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CFAHQC/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687442&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B005550NQ6&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0NJM888E0PN3VKMH3K7V
Saw it at my local Staples today when I was doing some last minute Christmas shopping for the wife. It's just what I was looking for, and I "think" the Pixel C should fit, but I figured I'd check here first to see if anyone had any experience with it. If nothing else, I'll bring my Pixel C up to the store to test it out and see if it will work.

So I went ahead and ran out to Staples again, this time with my Pixel C. They actually had a couple of different tablet cases/sleeves, but I ended up going with the one I posted above. Fits very well, and in fact the sleeve is actually a little bigger than needed (probably because the sleeve has a more traditional 16:9 ratio), so you could actually fit a few small things, such as papers, cables, etc., without hurting the slim design.
Now I might look into getting a case actually designed for the Pixel C once they start rolling out, but I"m very happy with this in the meantime, especially since Staples wanted to charge me $24.99 for it and I just had them price match Amazon's $10.97!
Esta es la funda que llevo de momento:
Because I am a rookie I can not include the page. Universal HT Silver 10.1
Perfect size, 2-position, nice touch, use c Port aux speakers and cameras ok
The only complaint one of the four holes in the cover 2 side microphone but I do not use it since. I give it 8 out of 10
Greetings fellow.
hey guys what do you think about this case ???

I like that case, but I wish it had the cut out for the back cover lights. (battery level lights) I think they are a very nice aesthetic touch that should be visible.
