Lost all app data after crash and forced reboot - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, did a quick search but couldn't find anything.
I experienced something very strange and depressing this morning. Running AOSPA 4.1 beta, I experienced a bug with pie that locked my phone up after rotating it while pie was active. Only way I could find out of it was to hold the power button until it rebooted the phone.
When my phone booted back up, I was greeted with the message "System UIDs Inconsistent." All of my gapps started force closing at random times and ALL OF MY APP DATA was gone. All of my apps were still there, just all of the data was gone so every time I opened one, it was like the first time it has ever been launched. It's like a factory reset was performed but all of my user apps are still installed.
I wiped system and reinstalled the rom and gapps hoping to solve it but it didn't fix anything. Used Titanium Backup to try to restore the backed up system ID but it said the current ID matches what's backed up. I then ran fix permissions in TWRP and that fixed the UID message and gapps force closing but my app data is still gone.
I'm hoping the data is still there, just inactive/hidden. My free space on SD seems to be a GB or 2 lower than before the problem but it's been a few days since I checked that so it might be the same as before the issue.
My last backup with Titanium was a few weeks ago so I'm really trying to avoid restoring that if there is some other solution to restore the app data if it's still there. All that Swordigo progress gone with only the final boss to go!
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried browsing the app data to see what's there?
I've had similar things happen across multiple devices and typically only a restore has helped.

The data/data folder has a folder for each of my apps but all that's in most of them is a cache folder or lib file but nothing else. I guess it's just gone.

Try fix permissions in recovery.

Fix permissions solved the UID error but didn't fix the issue with the apps having no data.

I haven't got my n5 yet but on pure stock on my nexus 4 I had a forced reboot (do have a custom kernel) and all my Google app data was gone (account, music, ect...) I think it has something to do with fsync being off possibly?

I just gave up and restored to an old backup. Lesson learned... Auto backup now enabled.

[Q] Anyone else having Titanium Backup issues?

I'm having the hardest time restoring apps with Titanium Backup. I'm rooted, SU Prompt is set at grant and TiBu verifies all the backups for apps as good without errors. Then after flashing a rom Tibu just hangs and can't restore my user apps. When I verify the backups they show as bad. Anyone else having these issues?
Soumds like I had the same issue but with system apps
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I've restored using it for each version of cleanrom up to 2.4 with no issues at all.
I have also flashed clean ROM a couple of times. No issues. I do tend to only restore user apps that are missing. I never do a backup of all system dat and users apps as you can have issues restoring system data.
I'm currently on clean ROM 2.3 which I just did two days ago and I used TI to re-install all my games and such. No problems
go to preferences and change processing mode to the second option Indirect (compatibility issues)
Titanium confuses me. The HOX is ky first android phone. I rooted it the other day, spoofed the cid, and unlocked the bootloader. I had a huge scare trying to ruu 1.85. So that's where I'm sitting right now. I looked in the play store for root apps and of course downloaded titanium. It says it backs up the info, but to where? There are entirely too many options for a noon lol

Kcsureshot is right, don't restore system data especially if you change roms! I use it mostly for games, Facebook, email...titanium stores backups to my SD card so they'll be there after a phone wipe

I tried that and didnt work for me. Mine started messing up after a strange message this morning. Titanium back up said it recognized a different identification number of some sort. Said this normally happens when you swap phones or if you do a factory reset. I've never seen this before and i've always synced between different devices. Same model and different models. It just sits at 0% on restore, doesnt move. I've cleared data, restarted, unchecked apps that it appeared stuck on and still nothing. Very strange. i'm going to search for an older version and try it.

[Q] All apps using SD crashes after removing some system apps

Hello!
I've rooted my Nexus S and decided to remove some system apps that I don't use.
I downloaded Root Uninstaller from Market and removed this ones:
PHP:
BooksTablet_2.3.6.apk
com.google.android.apps.googlevoice-2_0.4.2.54.apk
com.google.earth-2_6.2.apk
HoloSpiralWallpaper_4.0.4-299849.apk
LiveWallpapers_4.0.4-299849.apk
Microbes_4.0.4-299849.apk
NoiseField_1.0.apk
PhaseBeam_1.0.apk
talkback_3.0.2.apk
VideoEditorGoogle_1.1.apk
Videos_1.4.11.apk
VisualizationWallpapers_4.0.4-299849.apk
VoiceDialer_4.0.4-299849.apk
VoiceSearch_3.0.1.apk
I thought that they are not so critical.
After rebooting I stucked with constant error from gapps and every other app that uses SD card. For example, error stack from Financisto:
Code:
java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{...}: android.database.sqlite.SQLiteReadOnlyDatabaseException: attemt to write a readonly database.
Same thing with stock Exchange app, Gtalk and others. However, Total Commander can browse and view files on it. Mount to computer with USB also works fine.
I can try to wipe and/or flash custom rom, but want to save information from some apps. Stock 4.0.4 rom and Matr1x kernel.
Any suggestions how to fix this?
Back up your apps with titanium backup. It'll save the data as well. Just restore data+app for those select few. Wipe and reflash. Best bet is to always freeze apps because of stuff like this happening. You really aren't gaining any significant amount of space by deleting them anyways.

Not to intrude, but could you help me with an issue with my Nexus S ?

All are fine to deleted except com.google.android.apps. Restore it and you shouldn't have any issues.

Thank you, but I was unable to install anything. Things got worse and I received constant errors from every google app. I tried to install Titanium several times from market or apk or recover deleted gapps from backup without success.
So I wiped my phone and now all is ok.

How to restore using Titanium Backup

I had recently rooted my phone and had installed Titanium backup using which I backed up all the apps+data.
Using Titanium backup I tried to remove a stock app provided by lg. During this process the phone rebooted twice and after that I saw that the phone had been reset to the factory settings.
I restored by following the below steps
Titanium backup > Backup/Restore > menu > batch > Restore > run Restore missing apps + all system data.
After restoring I observe that the phone is not being able to connect to any wifi, however previously when it was in factory reset it was being able to connect to wifi. Could anyone please help.

I think it was one of "Dhingana", "Bollywoodji" or "AG indian newspapers". I had restored after that but currently I do not find "Dhingana" among the installed apps.
It would be the best of you would factory reset again. If you have a custom recovery, then reboot into it(either from ROM Manager or with phone off holding Volume Down+Home+Power) and wipe data, cache etc. If you haven't got a custom recovery, then power your phone off and use the key combination above. It should work.
And don't use "restore system data" option in Titanium. Better restore individual apps in the "Backup/Restore" without going into the Batch mode.

Which setting/file are the system settings saved in? Things like the nav bar, notification bar, display, account syns, etc....? I know all about the pitfalls of restoring system data across different ROMs and for those cases, I just bite the bullet and redo all of those settings. But it seriously takes an hour or two to go in and redo all of those settings and if a RM is getting updated every couple of weeks, this just gets way too tedious for it to be worth it.
I know I can just do a system data + app and data restore for those cases and I do use that but there are times when I do not want every single thing restored and it would be nice to know which file all of those settings are saved in. I tried tinkering with just a few of those but I could not seem to find it.
Thank you in advance for any help, much appreciated.
And/or which file(s) cause the android.process.media to stop working and in general causes apps to crash? Also, does the Android ID cause/affect that? Thanks again.
[Edit] After much trial and error, I found the cause of the android.media.process and all apps in general crashing as a result problem(s). It was the file(s) Download Manager eng.prbassplayer and/or Downloads eng.prbassplayer inside Titanium Backup - Restore System Data selections. Just fyi for those wanting to know. I restored all other system and app data besides those and had no problems whatsoever with all Interface settings restored. I still did not figure out which file restored the Interface settings, if anyone could still shed some light on that.
This post relates to custom ROMs and restoring stuff with TB. Hoping someone can help.
I have been playing with Resurrection Remix for the last 7 months and have recently switched to Vanilla Rootbox.
With these two ROM's (and probably others) when an update is released a wipe/factory reset is required before installing the update. This causes a great amount of inconvenience as I have to manually re-setup all my shortcuts/widgets, email accounts, custom settings such as custom settings (toggles, etc...) ringtones and notifications sounds and so on.
All this takes ages and I'm getting a little tired of having to do it. There must be an easier way? Can this sort of stuff be restored with TB? I could be wrong but I don't think it can.
Many thanks.

try to save them in TB, if you can find in TB and save them it will be restored to any rom you will use in future
I was under the impression that those settings caused problems if formats were needed and especially between different ROM's?
And yeah, tmarinos I definitely her you there. I have stopped using those extra customizations for my ROM, though I can usually restore my home screen and app drawer settings safely, thankfully.
The developers of my ROM (Slim Bean) have started that they want to include a feature to restores those settings between resets, so hopefully that type of feature becomes more integrated as time goes on. Hopefully.
On another note, my phone's TB is having issues. When it runs an automated scheduled backup task, it keeps saying "insufficient storage" but if I manually run that exact same task it runs just fine. Anyone have any idea what that's about?

System UIDs Inconsistent

I just went from JellyBeans18 to CM10.2 and when I rebooted no apparent issues. Then I restored TiBu data on certain apps, not all, and started having issues. Mainly that Nova Launcher wouldn't load and kept crashing, tried deleting data etc...didn't work. I uninstalled Nova and now the Play Store gives me an error when I try to reinstall Nova. Either way I rebooted and I am not getting this error.
"UIDs on the sysytem are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will be unstable."
with a button that stays "I'm Feeling Lucky"
I was curious if anyone else has had this and if a simple wipe will fix it? Since I just came from a clean wipe I am skeptical to say the least.

I just got the same message. I was on liquidsmooth 2.9 and flashed over to 3.0 unofficial. I did a clean wipe as well.
The problems started after I tried restoring some app data from Tibu, also some apps. After a reboot, since baconreader wasn't starting up I uninstalled it and went back to the play store and tried downloading it, got and error message saying some along the lines of "error 24". I
Tried setting backup location in TiBu to emulated/legacy instead of emulated/0.
Nope.
Just wondering what worked for you exactly? Or did you find out what was the problem?
I was having this issue. Did you set your backup location in tb to the legacy folder? I did that and restored the apps one at a time and have been five since.
I had a similar issue. See my post below for how I fixed it. Hope it helps.

[Q] Whtsapp stopped working and now throwing unknown errors

Hi everyone,
I have been using my nexus 5 since 4-5 days now and everything was working fine till last night when whatsapp started giving me errors (unfortunately app has been closed). I uninstalled whatsapp and when I am trying to re install it, its now giving me error "unknown error code on application install -24"
I have tried installing via apk, playstore's website, cleared the cache and data of playstore app, rebooted phone but nothing works.
I am hesitant to root my nexus 5 as there is no official recovery available and people are having issues when rooting the device and I cannot afford to have an unstable phone. Hard reset is an option but I would like to avoid it if possible. I have read that if I delete the related whatsapp folder from data/data folder somehow then it will fix the issue. Is there any way I could access and delete that folder without being rooted or if someone has any other solution to my problem.
Any help is much appreciated

Same thing happened to me, Did you enable ART? Because that's what caused my errors (force closing). After switching back to Dalvik and trying to re-install, i was getting -24 error on the play store. I rebooted a few times and left it for a few hours. Tried again and it worked.
Whatsapp is i believe in-compatible with ART.

Okay, As for as i know, it did fix itself when i rebooted a few times and after a while it just worked.
Things i also tried that might have helped. Clear cache for the playstore which you tried. i would do this again after you switched back to Dalvik. and make sure whatsapp is uninstalled before switching to Dalvik. Once you switch back and have cleared cache from the playstore, try to re-install Whatsapp.
As for the backup, on your phone is a whatsapp folder that has a backup of your messages and photos etc. When you re-install whatsapp it'll pick that up and restore your stuff. There is no need to delete that folder.
I Hope that fixes it for you.

Right so far thats what i did, and thats exactly what happened to me. I just left it for a few hours and tried again it worked. Just give it a few hours and re-try / reboot and re-try.
It didnt work. I had to factory reset my phone eventually and wasted my evening doing all the restores, I wish Android had a seamless backup system something like that of Apple's. Helium/Titanium/mybackup, all of them have some kind of flaws

I am not rooted at the moment so TB wasnt really an option. Helium works fine only for apps and their data but I am looking for something that can restore my phone exactly how it was before the reset including home screens, settings etc without being rooted.

That what you are looking for would be a nandroid backup made in a custom recovery, that restores everything. But not possible without root.
Hi,
I have the same problem. Error -24 if I want to install Whatsapp from Google Play Store. Local installation after downloading the APK from Whatsapp gives also an error (app not installed).
Tried several times to delete the cache and setting of the Play Store app and the Google Framework. Followed by restarts of the phone. Until now I was NOT succesful.
As far as I read on other forums, the problem is, that in data/data/ already exists a Whatsapp-directory and therefore Whatsapp doesn't want to install. You could delete this directory, but only if you are rooted. I avoided this step until now, because it's a new phone with warranty and after rooting, all data ist wiped.
I also tried adb to delete this directory, but same effect. Because the phone is not rooted, I can't remove this directory by remote shell.
Is there no way to clean up such remains WITHOUT root?
Greets,
scuba4436
