Hi
I posted here some time ago about my phone and got some really great help with it trying to diagnose problems. Some progress, but ultimately, I think the original ROM is the failure because all the issues were around stability and battery life.
Those two things got so bad I abandoned the thing altogether and now just have a basic handset. I was going to use the Samsung as a little pocket PC and just take it with me if I thought I'd need it, but even that plan died when it went into a continuous reboot cycle and is now in Safe Mode.
My experience with this phone has been very poor and now it has nearly died I'd be prepared to try changing the ROM since there's nothing to lose (well about £120 on Maxuma Mobile I think). I have an Apple iPhone I can use as a second phone but that's another set of issues (broken WiFi being the big one).
And I look at the relevant section for the Galaxy S i9000 but the dilemma for a total novice - not really sure which one I want as I just want the original but that actually works. As an example Google Maps doesn't crash 75% of the time. As another, it doesn't leak memory (presumption) and just restart in the middle of a phone call now and again. The battery lasting more than 11 hours just idling would be nice.
And the threads are huge, really expert knowledgeable people, and known issues get discussed but I'm not sure I can read all 847 pages.
Can anyone give me any pointers - which one should I choose? Normally for a software download I'd just go for the most recent stable non beta version but here there are a whole array of choices. Thanks so much.
hy.
i'd advise this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/register.php?do=signup
tiramislim is very smooth and stable, with no real bugs, and i'm very content with this. and it's easy to install and to personalize. it was my first rom i flashed by myselfe and i had no problem with it. it is still beta, but don't think about it. most roms are beta-versions because they will contenue developping it for years
if you haven't root your device, read this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742403
good luck
Hi dtmark,
to me your question and your story sounds like you should first try to get basic stability, so I would go and do a clean install of a recent stock rom, e.g.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570488
which is recommend here:
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...-ics-sprinkled-gingerbread-sgs-i9000-but-why/
Check out instructions on how to properly flash the rom with odin. From my experience and many others it's very important for stability to 1. factory reset after installing a new ROM and 2. wipe cache and 3. wipe dalvik and 4. Zu fix permissions. If applications behaver weird, points 2, 3 and 4 often help and they don't hurt or delete any of your data. How to do that? Install the clockworkmod (CWM) recovery:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/xxjw4-root-and-clockworkmod-recovery-for-galaxy-s/
I'd recommend to first refrain from any optimized custom ROMs and tweaks until you have reached basic stability. I'm doing very fine with this strategy. There is one neat app I can recommend to get a greatly enhanced user interface experience with an ICS touch to it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1636393
You can simply install and try it as an alternative to the stock launcher. If you don't like it, just uninstall it again
If this post was useful it would be nice to hit the thanks button
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice and tips - I'll give it a go this weekend.
Can someone please help me get rid of the horrible lag on this tablet its unbearable..I have the wifi US version.
Thanks
A friend of mine got me the US P6210 (EULA3 Firmware) on holiday and bought it back to the UK for me.
I know exactly what you mean mate. The lag was horrible. Id open ONE browser window and it would crash after some time! crazy stuff.
Anyway the only way I solved this problem was by installing a new ROM. Its the Galaxy ROM HD by Ace9876. The visuals are exactly the same and you wont notice any difference but the ROM is highly optimized and tweaked for speed and stability. That, you can notice! Since I installed that ROM I have no problems with lag or stutter or whatever. I can have 10 tabs open in the browser and no lag whatsoever. Amazing.
First youll need to be rooted and also have Clockworkmod installed. This thread shows you how: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379532
Then you need to install the ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697123
Enjoy.
I was able to minimize some of the lag by rooting, removing the bloat, then installing a different launcher (like go launcher or adw)

So I just got home with my brand spanking new 10.1 and I think its high time I void the warranty and get rid of the prerequisite bloatware that Samsung insists on pumping into the device before shipping it. This brings me here with two questions:
1: What is a good de-bloated / efficient ROM to run while I'm waiting for CM10.1 to reach a more stable state?
2: Is there anything different I should know about the tablet rooting / flashing process from the phone rooting / flashing process?
Thanks for any input.
Mate, I found the stock rom runs just fine.... All I did was root it...
It's up to you entirely but if all Samsung phones and tablets were shipped like the Note 10.1, I don't think I'd ever really flash a different rom again...
Would suggest trying it out as is for a few days then go ahead and flash, flash, flash... I do insist you root it however...

Idk... I'll give this one a try, we'll just have to see how stable the ROM stays when I start peeling away the bloatware. If its anything like my past experiences, once the Samsung apps get pulled, the whole system will start to collapse like a house of cards. That's why I tend to prefer preshrunk ROMs, with CM being the best for my tastes.
using gloryrom myself

These tablets kick ass stock. I would read a bit of these forums before any mods. at least use it for a few weeks that way after you modify it you'll be able to tell what broke it. After all these forms go a bit like this, I just flashed rom x and now my tab don't work right. Why mess up perfection. I have tried many and the bug free one is the one the creators made for it, stock
rooting does not void your hardware warranty.. if you screw up software you are on your own but most likely can unroot and flash stock..
I use stock touchwiz on my 8013 .. just rooted and removed all the bloatware..
also you can remove stock installed apps such as maps, google plus, street view, talk, chat on etc.. which take up quite a bit of space is ssystem/app and when you upgrade them anyway in google play the old versions are still there wasting space.. recommend you create a stockapps directory first on sd and copy any app you are about to remove so yhou can always put it back if there is an issue or you need it for an upgrade.
For me there is only one good reason to root a note 10.1 ........... To install [ROOT] FolderMount https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount this app is the bomb.
My stock note 10.1 is way more stable than when it was rooted with a custom rom. The only reason that I would think about rooting again is if I wanted to take advantage of storing my game data and obb files onto ext memory. But once you learn all of the storage locations and file names for those files you can manually move them and achieve the same out come with out rooting but it is a pain to have to move 2gb files back and forth from internal and ext memory.
I should have gotten the 32gb note (but I wanted white) and none of this would be an issue because my stock note runs every app and game I have put on it without an issue.
Good luck no matter what you decide.
.
All I can say for CM10.1 on this tab is, why disable all the multi-window goodness? CM ruins this device, IMO.
I would stick with any rom based on stock.

With so many votes for the stock OS, I guess I'll give it a chance, but I will say that I'm still going to be running into one of my own personal preference problems with the fact that I'm going to want to change the themeing of the stock ROM. I've never been a huge fan of the look of TW, so that may end up being the deciding factor when push comes to shove. I guess we'll see though... if stock is as good as you say, I may have to live with it...

I am not a fan of Touchwiz at all. So I install Nova Launcher. THere are others as well. Apex and many more. Might want to look at those.

I actually already use Apex, but I generally want the themeing to go deeper to cover things like the system framework etc., which just isn't possible with Apex. I think that's one of my favorite things about CM10, beyond its bare-bones nature, is that it supports one-touch theme changing.
I just took a gamble and canceled my Verizon account and switched to AT&T just to get the Nexus 5. I must say I do not miss the S4 one bit. Google made it so easy to root and unlock the bootloader. The phone is incredibly fast! I like how its simple to use. An example is the camera. You open it and shoot pictures. Samsung camera had so many different features that just wanted needed and probably bogged down the phone.
Now that I have my phone setup I just wanted to see if theres anything you guys recommend. I am rooted with the bootloader unlocked but I kept the stock rom. With the stock rom I got Gravity box to let me customize the rom to my liking. I also got greenify(donate version).
Is there anything in particular you guys recommend?
Heres a list of apps Im using.
Weather:1Weather
Launcher:Nova Launcher
File Browser:Solid Explorer
Backup:Titanium Backup
Power Toggles
Do you guys recommend anything else useful or cool? Am I wrong for not wanting to do roms? I just want the most stable I can get. Ive noticed in the past that once you start romming that things become unstable.

There's nothing wrong with flashing a ROM. Makes the phone far more customizable and in most cases, improves performance. If you don't like it just revert back.
A root app I would recommend is 'Greenify'. Some people believe it is useless, however on my old single core phone, it was quite dramatic. So you might as well use it.

Yea i got the donate version of that. Mainly because one night i charged phone to 100% and unplugged it. In the morning it was at 75% I was shocked. I put greenify on there and did the same thing. What a difference. Work up with 97% battery.
Congrats I did the same but went with tmo about 9 months ago. So happy!
Check out xposed and the module gravity box. It's all I run. It's all you need to run (imo).... Root required but I use stock Google rom with stock kernel. No need for custom kernels or roms (imo)
Fwiw I don't use anything else. No need to greenify anything (again imo)

Hi all! I'm a noob to the site and a noob to smartphone modifications, so please forgive me for my questions and concerns. I've used forums for years on many topics and found the knowledge base to be incredible, so I hope you guys will help me out, too.
So, while my Skyrocket has generally worked very well for the past 2+ years, I have always felt it's not living up to its potential. I've read numerous threads on many forums to see what my fellow Rocketeers were doing. I think I've come to the conclusion that flashing a new ROM is the way to go, but I am a bit wary since I've never done this nor know anyone who has. My thinking goes along the same lines as my experience with computers... If you buy a Dell, HP, etc., you get the garbage that the manufacturer bundles in along with Windows. If you wipe the HD and install your own clean copy of Windows, you can usually get better performance without all that other stuff. Hence, the idea for a new ROM for the phone.
A few things have me wondering, though... There seem to be more ROMs available than flavors of Linux! I know choice will end up being a personal thing. My goal is really simple... I just want a clean OS that is stable, efficient, and runs the basic functions I am accustomed to. So, I am not looking to experiment or push the envelope. I want a phone that doesn't crash at the worst possible time, and one that can actually make phone calls! I assume that I will still be able to use the Google Play store to download apps (after installing the plugin thingy). My phone is from AT&T and is unlocked. Will it say unlocked after flashing a new ROM? Will Visual Voicemail still work? I occasionally use FoxFi to create a mobile hotspot. Will I still be able to use it? Or do other ROMs already have this feature unlocked (or bypassed)? I use apps on my phone mostly for email (Yahho/Gmail), calendar, FB, Instagram, YouTube, taking photos/video, viewing forums, and the like, besides making phone calls. In other words, what should I expect from a new ROM? How will things be different? I'm really trying to gauge if this is a worthwhile endeavor for me.
Sorry for the long post. I appreciate your opinions and experience.
It's always worthwhile.
The Skyrocket, to me, was always a case of OEM software that limited its potential. If you really sit down and tweak it, custom ROM, new governor, overclock, it's a beast of a phone that can still keep pace today. You'll have to balance performance with battery life--overclocking and switching to a more aggressive governor doesn't do you any favors there, and some ROMs are better about battery life than others. It's a great phone with a lot of life left, though, much more so than the vanilla S2 because the Rocket has LTE capability.
To hit your other questions, any app that is available on the Play Store will work. If a ROM needs a second gapps flash to get the Play Store (along with everything else Google ships) back, that will be made available and is a very easy install. I've never unlocked a phone, but I don't believe that a new ROM would lose that. Wait for someone else to reply, but I'd be shocked if it did. As far as what you want, there's a ROM to suit any desires. Most ROMs are pretty basic and look and feel like you'd expect a Skyrocket to. Some are designed to feel a little more like iOS, some are designed to be stripped-down (and faster as a result), and some are based on stock firmware and very closely replicate the original experience. It's up to you to read through the dev forum for the Rocket and pick the experience that's best for you.
As far as how difficult it is, spend a couple hours reading about flashing, how it works and why it works. Once you have that basic understanding of it and can follow a few simple instructions that are pretty universal across ROMs, you're set.
Well, I'm giving this a try tonight. Fingers crossed!
One piece of advice: when you pick a new rom from "Android development" read the WHOLE thread associated with that rom, with special attention the the first couple of pages. Make sure you understand the process and any potential pitfalls.
First rom I tried I spent probably six hours reading. It was worth it.
Success!!! I now have the latest CandyKat running! It ended up being not too bad at all. Now I need to figure out how things are different from the AT&T Jelly Bean this replaces.
Thanks for the advice and thanks to everyone who contributes to the site,
I have Kandykat. It seems to be a good solid rom. The Google Now launcher is buggy though. I changed to Nova launcher. Other than that it's been fine.
Thanks for the tips, Chris. I've been using Launcher3. What's the difference between these launchers? Everything seems to be running fine on my rocket now. Any tips on increasing battery life? Any tips on some nice customization?
Google Now launcher seems to have the annoying habit of forgetting the screen setup (app positioning) during reboot. Launcher 3 also exhibited the same problem. Launchers are a matter of taste, but Nova launcher seems solid and looks right to me. YMMV. It's easy to try a few.
