I know that my question has been answered in countless threads.... but what I'm hoping to do is get this information compiled into one thread (and if it exists already, please point me there).
What I'm wondering is who's stock, who's rooted, what ROM you're running and if you had any issues.
I'm really not looking for any fixes to problems in this thread, just a simple compilation to get percentages, because I like to play the numbers.
I'll even start:
Stock Inspire with official sideloading and custom APN for hotspot
Only a random occurance where screen rotation stops
Owned since April 22
I've run LeeDroid and Android Revolution so far. With both ROM's I've noticed nice improvements in overall responsiveness of the phone. However, both suffer slight lag from the application Slacker Radio (just in case you enjoy streaming music ) that builds up over time to the point where I have to reset my phone just to continue to use it.
With LeeDroid, I've noticed that my Pandora app doesn't give it lag, or such a small amount that I don't really notice/care about it.
I've run a lot of Radio's (With their RIL) so I won't go into that, but the only Kernel I've ever played with was the oen for LeeDroid. Dunno if it actually did anything.
LeeDroid also, of the two (three if you count stock) ROM's I've run has the best battery life by far. Can't really go into official numbers since I've been tweaking my phone non-stop for a week now working out a few signal/speed bugs, however I've noticed that I don't have to plug it into my external battery except once a day, even after tweaking and adjusting non-stop for 4-6 hours.
So yeah, that's my take on it. If you're willing to sit down and play with things to get it to work, I'd say go for it. If you want something quick and easy, then I'd suggest maybe holding off a bit and enjoying stock.
Well, I ran my phone bone stock for the first 3 weeks of owning it, then rooted without any issue using bubby's simple root method.
Waited another ~1.5 months before flashing the rom I'm using now, Inspired Ace.
The rom has been a flawless, near stock (sense) gingerbread experience. I often forget I even flashed anything, except for the little gingerbread differences, of course.
Seriously, my guess is that an offical gb release from HTC for this phone would look nearly identical to this rom.
Haven't done anything radio-wise aside from flashing the matching ril for the stock radio. I haven't even updated to the new OTA radio yet.

Nah. I've actually been getting the "itch."
There's so many roms to check out, and I'm running out of excuses not to try some.
I'm just still a little hazy on some of the pre-flashing procedures, mainly cwr related. Like differences between "wiping" and format /system, /data, etc.
I'm finding that trying too hard to avoid misery before it happens results in perpetual inaction, though.

I just got the Inspire last week (my first Android phone), and I can't help but tinker, so I've rooted and put a custom ROM on already. (LeeDroid and now CyanogenMod 7) I found these two video guides to be very helpful, as I wasn't familiar with a lot of the terminology people throw around.

Be warned, this took me a lot longer than I anticipated (a couple of hours total, but I was multi tasking. [multi tasking = watching Game of Thrones]).
I really like CM7, it feels faster than stock and my battery life seems better as well.

I ran Stock for about 2 days. No known Issues.
I then Rooted and Ran Bubby's one click and ran the rooted stock RUU for about 3 days. No Known issues.
I then flashed Ace Inspired. It was fantastic. I ran it for about 2 days. Only issue I had was screen would stick in rotation. It just wouldn't move. A Reboot fixed it. I made a back so I could easily return to it. I haven't.
I then flashed Leedriod. I have been running this rom since. Its amazing. I have seen no issues. I Also made a Backup of this rom so I could easily return to it. I have.
I then flashed Gingerbeast yesterday. Its fast and clean. But...Sirius Radio would randomly disconnect. Wireless would random disconnect. Bluetooth stuttered.
I returned to Leedriod this morning. Again, no issues.
When my inspire was stock everything seemed to work like it should. Except I had one huge problem, and its a problem that I have had with any phone from at&t, I had absolutely zero service here in southwest Wisconsin where I'm going to school.
I then decided to root in hopes that with a new radio I could get signal. I went with Leedroids Rom and kernel and couldn't be happier. Now I get full service edge! I didn't even have to mess with the radio.
I still can't believe that with those two changes I get great service. I'm comparing to 3 phones all on the same network, razr, blackjack 2, and Samsung flight 2. The inspire was the second to worst service here, now blows all of the other phones out of the water.

2. Backup SMS/MMS w/ SMS Backup+ and sync to your google acct.
3. Make sure your Contacts are Synced
4. Backup Apps w/ TiBu or the like
5. Boot to recovery/CWM from Rom Mgr(if your current rom doesn't have the advanced shut down menu.)
6. Go to Backup/Restore and backup your current config
7. Go to Format System/Factory reset and run that
8. Go to Advanced and select Wipe Dalvik Cache
9. Go to Install zip from sd card> choose zip from sd card
10. Flash anything else that you're wanting/needing w/ that particular rom(some require flashing gapps)
11. Reboot System and complete setup like a new phone
12. DL TiBu or the like and restore apps
13. I can't think of anything else.
Aosp Gingerbread. Fastest, best stock gingerbread rom ever. Never made it past rc1; only problem is Bluetooth doesn't work. Which doesn't bother me one bit.

I keep seeing people getting ripped for rooting business phones. I'm a self employed IT tech, and I use my phone for everything from remote access (RDP& TeamViewer) to mobile doc (Docs2Go) to social networking to business calls to gaming to kill time.
Would I be stupid to root this phone?

Thanks Tx, I appreciate that. I have yet to flash a rom the "regular" way, that is, other than rom manager, with the exception of rooting, but that was rather automated, so having these step-by-steps is extremely helpful.

Not necessarily. There was a recent thread where someone was having problems with sound quality on his phone, which he depended on heavily for work, but i suspected other factors involved with that.
I'll tell you right now, this here phone in my hands is work-ready. Rooted and flashed a stable non-stock rom.
If anything, maybe if you had a backup phone just as a CYA type of thing for the process and a "burn-in" period, in case you run into some speedbumps along the way.
I mean, if you plan on going off hard on the flashing thing, then just due to the shear number of rom changes, something is bound to get a little goofy on the software end, but not anything that isn't fixable, for the most part.
When you start getting careless with things like partitioning or radio flashing, then you could run into some serious problems.

A few points:
-it's very, very hard to brick your phone by rooting and flashing roms, so if you're stressing about that at all, don't. It only gets dicey is you are flashing radios via fastboot or messing with ENG-OFF. You don't need to do either of those things, and you won’t either accidentally.
-tinkering and trying many roms is very easy. If you do a nandroid backup (aka a backup with Clockworkmod recovery), you’re golden. It takes about 5 minutes to do a backup. If you want to come back to the previous rom, simply restore in Clockworkmod recovery. EVERYTHING will restore as it was before. After you do a backup, boot up and rename the backup file to something meaningful, like “Dilligaf5-20110534”. Make sure there are no spaces in the name, or Clockworkmod recovery will upchuck. The backup files are on your SD card in the \clockworkmod\backup directory. I have a collection of 10 backup roms. I can restore any one of them in 5 minutes with all my settings intact.
-if you are going from froyo to froyo or gb to gb, you can used Titanium backup to backup and restore sms/mms. Just backup “dialer storage”. When you get your new rom up, restore dialer storage. You will have to reboot after you restore in order to see your sms/mms messages.
-buy Setcpu and root explorer.
-checkout the rom kitchen. You can do lots of neat stuff like changing the battery meter, status bar, icons, fonts, animation, and boot animation. http://uot.dakra.lt/
-AOSP roms like CM7 and others are very fast and have good battery life, but some the apps are not as feature-rich. For example e-mail is missing a lot of options.
-GB roms (like LeeDroid and AR) are nice, but to me, GB doesn’t really have that much to offer over Froyo. LeeDroid has a great kernel and battery life. It also has a really nice call recorder. From a UI perspective
-My favorite rom is Dilligaf 2.0. You should give it a try.

I knew it was really a matter of "when" not "if" (My iPhone was JB when I bought it.... A guy wanted it unlocked, so I JB it for him and then saw that it was 3.1.3 before they had released the exploit for that baseband, so I bought it _CHEAP_)

Any reviewsa on MIUI? I like Sense, but mostly just b/c I think that HTC's clock widget is >*, and I see that MIUI's widget is very similar.
You could just buy beautiful widgets and use it on whatever rom you prefer.

I rooted and tried several ROMs. RCMixHD and TB Fusion were both nice, but the keyboard seemed to lag and freexe a good bit on those. Inspired Ace is the ROM I am currently on. I used the battery calibration technique used here to maximize my battery usage. For the battery history section of that thread be sure to grab this app, as the method listed there is not coded into GB ROMs. I have flashed ROMs once or twice and they have not booted, but a simple battery pull and boot to clockworkmod recovery (turn on with power and volume down buttons pressed at the same time then scroll to recovery) to wipe and reflash worked fine.
Well, I now officially have no warranty
Waiting for my SD contents to copy back over, and I think I'll start with Inspired Ace.
I welcome recommendations, but for now I think I'll stick with Sense ROMs.
Sup xda, my names Bilal and this is my first time posting here. I do have a question though but I've got a lot I want to talk to you guys about
I got my tmobile mytouch 3g about 4 days ago. On the first day my cousin had already told me about this site and how beneficial it would be to me real soon xD. The next day I had already begun looking up important things i needed to know to end up with a custom rom on my phone. I looked up the specifications to my phone (like checking the radio and SPL versions) I found out my phone was a 32B and had new SPL and Radio. I found out the Roms that would be compatible with my phone as well as the method to go about doing it. the next 2 days basically consisted of my going through over like 15-20 different methods over my phone (but all of them basically had the same routine). I mean, you have to root it then get a custom recovery than flash the custom rom. But this is simplified as I'm pretty sure i searched and found 3-4 different ways for the simplified root recovery rom steps. Anyways it was real frustrating since I failed many times on all 3 steps . Anyways with the new SPL Radio 32b Mytouch phone 2.2.1 (since i idiotically upgraded it to 2.2.1) just flashed cyanogenmod 6.1.0 about 30 minutes ago. Haha I'm so excited to see the possibilities.
I wanted to thank this whole site and the people from the unlockr because i searched a ton of guides and Google'd over 50 questions to figure out the process suited for me and even though it ended being extremely easy compared to the people who had to work hard to develop all the things involved in making Rom Manager, Clockworkmod and Armons Custom recoveries, and every easy step in the process that we take for granted. I didn't have a clue in programming scripting developing software or ROM's for anything before flashing my phone. After doing it I still don't have much of a clue even though I feel like I did learn a whole lot I know I'm way more interested in learning how things work.
You could have probably skipped this whole essay and went straight to the question though xD.
My question at this point was what exactly are all the possibilities (or some that I'm not aware of) that my phone has now that it has flashed cyanogenmod 6.1.0
One thing that I have definitely noticed and feel that alone, was worth the 4 days of tirelessly failing, is that my phone has become a lot faster, and I mean in everything that it does, from opening applications to loading videos on youtube. I know I could probably search this as well but I just wanted to advice directed towards me as far as what to do next? Ive been messing around with the themes (can only use ADW as far as I know) but was wonting to find a live unlock pattern screen? I found one on youtube and I'm 90 percent sure the guy had the exact same phone as me. Also any advice on details for upgrading the overall performance on my device would be great help.

Glad that you learned some stuff. Stay around here for a while and you'll learn alot more. Anyways, yes, there are many possibilities available for you. For one, I would advise updating to CyanogenMod 7. Just go here: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/htc-slide and choose a category to suit you. NB: The "Experimental" build category is not as "dangerous" as it sound. These build are actually Release Candidates which mean they are almost (if not) good enough to be a Stable build. Since you're just beginning, you may just want to use a stable build for now. But later on, you may change your mind. There are also many apps you may want to try like: SetCPU (to make your device even faster than it is now and/or to save battery life, Titanium Backup, Rom Manager, etc. ADW is NOT the only launcher you can use. It just came as the main launcher for your rom. There are many other launchers like Launcher Pro, etc. For the "live lockscreen pattern, you could try Ripple Lock (Honeycomb Lockscreen) or the sense 3.0 lockscreen found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190071 . So I'm an Iphone convert. I got an infuse, and love the freedom to customize and do cool things with apps and the like. I've spent a lot of time customizing etc.
Now I'm reading more and more into the whole custom ROM thing. I'm just looking to get an idea of what to expect from the process of changing to a new ROM
Will it be faster and have better battery life if I switch from stock to CM7?
Will I have to reinstall all my apps?
How will future software updates and stuff be handled?
When installing a new custom ROM you need to look at it as a fresh install of a new OS. In other words, yes you will lose your installed apps, however there are plenty of apps available which can help you with the restore process. One that i like to use is Titanium Backup, however you will need to be rooted for this to work. If you have not already rooted your stock ROM, then you may want to download an app from the market that creates an "app list" rather then an actual backup of the apps themselves.
One thing to keep in mind though if you are using Titanium Backup, when restoring make sure to only select the "restore App" option, rather then "App + Data". Restoring data will attempt to restore app data that references your previous ROM, which will almost always break your installation and cause things to go wacky. Installing app only basically does a fresh install on your new ROM without causing any issues.
Will it be faster? It depends on which ROM you install, but the short answer is most likely yes. I can tell you that CM7 and MIUI will be faster as i have tried them myself. Benchmarks will show this to be true, but take this with a grain of salt. The real test is "real world snappiness", and i can tell you that in practical real world application, CM7 and MIUI feel a heck of allot smoother and responsive then the stock Rogers ROM that i was coming from.
Will you get better battery life? I don't know, it depends again on what you install. But my current experience is that i am getting better battery life on MIUI vs stock. I did however disable some of the built in extras on MIUI like network data monitoring, and battery monitoring. You may or may not have to do this, but i found that turning off any background monitoring processes provided me with the longest battery life. About 20+ hours to 5 -10% with moderate to heavy usage.
Future updates. This all depends on the cook or dev of the ROM. Generally though you will want to follow their install instructions to the letter to avoid any issues. Many times though when updating from one version of MIUI to newer version of same MIUI, you can simply install without "full wipe" and this will keep your installed apps intact. However if the dev specifically calls for a full wipe, then you should do it to avoid issues that could otherwise be avoided.
One thing to keep in mind however, is that when installing custom roms you need to understand that you are joining a community of testers. You should always approach it as such, and keep in mind that for the most part these releases are coming from people who do this as a hobby. You also need to keep in mind that you may likely run into bug's, so if you absolutely don't want to deal with this, please stick with stock. However if your adventurous and don't mind a few possible issues while trying out the latest and greatest that the community has to offer, then dive right in! When reporting issues, please do so with the utmost respect and keep this in mind that the Dev's do this on their spare time for our benefit, and they do not get paid for it. So please try to keep the reports as constructive as possible for everyone's benefit!
Lastly, welcome to the android community agent888 and glad to hear you dropped the iphone and left the collective for a community that offers you freedom of choice!
I got Infused 1.6 installed. I chose this one because I found a nice how to video on youtube and followed it step by step. I think it was a nice way for a first timer like myself to do so, to get me over those initial gut wrenching fears of bricking the phone.
All in all, I am more satisfied every single day that I've chosen android over iPhone.

First rom I installed as well. It's a great beginners rom and I never had any issues with it.
Hi guys sorry for the several topics in my subject line but there are several questions that I have.
So I just signed up because I'm a bit confused and I'm quite new to the scene. I actually posted this on another forum which I'm already a member of, but I felt it would be better posting here since this is obviously more specialised.
After reading the rules, I've realised that it's quite hard to do a search for existing topics with my questions. I've already tried to do individual searches on each topic though, with varying success.
I've just rooted my Nexus S (i9023, AUS version) for the first time simply because I wanted to be able to use DroidWall (to only allow certain apps to use data).
1) If I manually update to ICS, will I lose root?
2) Does installing a custom ROM cause you to lose all your data? - I've done some searching on this and it seems to depend. Some do and some don't. I don't quite get it though.
3) Kernels - seem to control battery life and how the operating system runs. This slightly confuses me because it makes me think, what affects battery life more: the kernel or the ROM?
4) Most people like to overclock their phones in the interest of power. Would it be reasonable to underclock it in the interest of battery life? Sometimes I don't think I really need 1GHz.
5) It seems like the OTA for ICS for i9023 has not been released yet but has been for i9020?
I'm trying to find the best 2.3.6 Custom ROM from here but none of these are 2.3.6 based! All of them are 2.3.4 or older. I'm hesitant upgrading to ICS for three reasons:
1) Hasn't been released OTA officially
2) Worried of app compatibility
3) Worried of shorter battery life
For these reasons, I'm looking for a 2.3.6 based custom ROM otherwise I'd be happy to look at ICS custom ROMs.
None of the ICS ROMs seem to have any distinctive features about them, especially after watching the video reviews. It's all pretty much "it's a great ROM that doesn't lag when browsing the web and it's fast". Nothing really distinguishes one from another.
Sorry for the mildly long post, but I'd rather ask as many questions as I can at a time rather than making a couple of threads for each. Hope I can get some help =)

If it is the update you probably will (not 100% sure), if it is the full OTA you certainly will. But it is not a major issue either way, and i would actually recommend backing up with TB (AND a Nandroid), wiping everything and then installing the Full OTA ROM and just root again, then restore your backup.
2) Does installing a custom ROM cause you to lose all your data? - I've done some searching on this and it seems to depend. Some do and some don't. I don't quite get it though.
They will generally lose any system data, apps, modifications, etc. Titanium Backup will copy over most of it anyway, particularly apps and their settings/data. Keep in mind that you should always have a CWM backup (Nandroid) ready in case something goes wrong.

Both. ROMs can do more or different functions which can cause battery drain. Kernels allow you to change your own settings (most of the time) to actually balance performance and drain. I would say at the moment with ICS, the kernel and the settings you give it is the biggest contributor.
4) Most people like to overclock their phones in the interest of power. Would it be reasonable to underclock it in the interest of battery life? Sometimes I don't think I really need 1GHz.
That is correct. Many people can get the same speed with a lower voltage, lowering battery drain. Others also use something called "LiveOC" and increase the clocks by 10% (or more), changing the bus speed and giving similar speeds to 1000mhz at only 880mhz, again saving power. Just remember every CPU batch has different variations - some can undervolt and overclock like crazy, whereas some struggle with a 5% increase.
5) It seems like the OTA for ICS for i9023 has not been released yet but has been for i9020?
The i9023 and i9020T has been released. The i9020A has not, and the same with the Nexus S 4G (D720 i believe). It sometimes doesnt show up though. Either try a manual command which i can't remember in the dialpad or just update manually (manually is best ).

Lots of words, i'm getting a little confused up there. Anyway, if you are rooted (and i assume your bootloader is unlocked), there is nothing to worry about as long as you backup. I personally love ICS and have no issue with it, as do many others. A minority of people however tend to have some problems, whether its battery or force closes. My experience so far has been that a proper wipe fixes most of these anyway.
ICS is still new. Once Cyanogenmod 9 is officially released i'm sure we'll see much more variety than the same look and feel, as alot is based off their code. And also, practically no phones have ICS yet. I've not found app compatibility a problem though, i think the main gripe is viber (which should work soon).
I hope this can help you, just let us know if there is anything else you're after. Also, there is a TON of information around the site (and Nexus S forums in particular). A good amount of reading and going through a couple of pages of some of these threads can go a long way. That is why you came here after all, isn't it?
I got the OTA for ICS back around 20th Dec 2011, but I chose not to update it because I was going to be away from a computer for a few days and had no backup phone. When I wanted to update it a few days later, the update had disappeared from my phone so I looked it up online. Apparently the OTA disappeared for Nexus S's due to some bugs or incompatibility issues. I've never seen the update come up on my phone since. Even when I go to Settings->About phone->System update, it says "your system is up to date". So I've always been under the impression that ICS for Nexus S (at least for my variant, i9023) has never been re-released to us OTA.
Harbb, thanks for your answers. The only one I'm not so sure about is the underclocking one. It seems a little beyond me in terms of technicality. I am definitely interested in doing it though. Would you be able to tell me if adjusting clock speed requires an app?
I am rooted and bootloader is unlocked (I thought you could only root if bootloader was unlocked?).
So does that mean all these custom ROMs around at the moment are mostly based around Cyanogenmod, which is why they're very similar? As I was saying, I was looking at getting a custom ROM installed and noticed most of them are ICS custom ROMs, and the video reviews all say "this ROM is fast and does not lag when web browsing. It's a great ROM and it's fast and smooth."
The custom ROMs just don't seem to be "promoted" too well because I can't see what makes one better than the other, or what features of one custom ROM are intended to be the standout ones.
I notice you (Harbb) are using Stock ICS 4.0.3 (according to your sig) - so you are not using a custom ROM? Am I able to install a custom ICS ROM without first installing ICS? I am still running 2.3.6 at this point.
Viber does not work at the moment? That's not too bad. I can live with that.
I've done quite a bit of reading so far. It has certainly helped, but still a long way to go, but thanks for giving me a great start!

Best line i've read in days
I have tried several custom ROMs once they started surfacing but i didn't feel like they gave me anything special enough to switch to right now and Stock is setup and running very nicely. Stock ICS colours are fine and other apps now can provide Notifications Widgets. I havn't noticed any particular differences in speed either.
Brainmasters ICS tweaks, custom kernel and Flavours of ICS runs beautifully. The OTA varies with where it shows up. To force a check, type this in dialer: *#*#checkin#*#* [AKA, *#*#2432546#*#* ]
If you are rooted it won't work anyway. Just update manually. There is no need to currently on ICS to flash custom ICS ROMs. I would advise that when going from GB to ICS though (and often between some custom ROMs) that you go into CWM and do a factory/data wipe and format /system. After backing up of course.
At the moment most are not based on CM9, however several do use bits and pieces of code (ie. notification power widgets) from it. Not sure why most ROM descriptions are the same
First thing i'd consider is getting a custom kernel, and then the NSTools app (market). Lots of stuff to mess around with and full control of the CPU (governors, IO, overclocking, undervolting, etc).

agree with u. for 4.0.3, stock is my favorite, sad to say that.
for 4.0.4, while stock for NS not available, IMM26 ROM ported from NS4G seems good, if you like the stock rom feel.
Hmm I bricked my phone.
I've done the Nandroid and Titanium Backup and have it sitting on my computer ready once I recover this damn thing. Following the backups, I attempted to manually update to ICS with the zip file on this page: http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-gsm-nexus-s-ice-cream-sandwich

Hopefully I will get this back up and working. I'm still confused as to why it got bricked though. Updated via clockworkmod "update from sdcard" and then rebooted system. After that, it just bricked. Can't get any lights to come up on the device whatsoever. Plugging it in to computer, wall charger, pressing all the buttons, taking the battery out and putting it back in.
Odd. Best of luck getting it working, i'm sure the resurrector will work for you so don't stress too much. That's the right file so i'll probably just put the issue on a bad flash or bad download (wise to hash check before flashing). At this point i'd say it's wise when you get it working again, just flash the Full OTA file, and do a wipe of /data, /cache, /system and /boot beforehand.

So it looks like everything worked out for me. I managed to restore my phone with the help of the threads above. I have to admit though, the guides given on this forum aren't too "complete" - there's always a step or two missing from the guide that the reader has to figure out themselves. And not all the files are provided in the topics either! I'm also kind of concerned why it seems so many people ended up bricking their phone like that. Quite concerning.
In the end, I managed to reflash the stock ICS ROM for i9023 Nexus S which I found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635
So I scrapped the one that I downloaded initially from Android Central. The difference in size was surprisingly roughly 30MB (160MB instead of the 130MB Android Central one).
I'm just using stock ICS, but rooted. Downloaded a few apps which require root, but haven't tried adding any mods or kernels. I might look into that later. But it seems like with 4.0.4 coming out, there might be some interesting new additions!

Congratulations on resurrecting it! Are you guys saying that there is a risk of bricking a phone, while installing official update? I did a manual update, 3 weeks ago, unrooted, and ICS has been nothing but amazing for me.

Hello everybody!
I'm Martin and looking for a helping hand with my OnePlus One. Which is actually my first smartphone ever. That should tell you how experienced I am in flashing ROMs. I got it early 2015 and as big brother was bothering me I rooted it instantly to have AFWall+ and AdAway installed. Rooting my phone really made me sweat because I feared I might brick the thing. So when an CyanogenMod update killed my root a few days later and I had to redo the whole procedure, I decided to stay away from future updates so as not to take any further risk of losing my root again. Which means I'm still running on CM 11.0-XNPH05Q.
This worked fine for me for years but with 2020 rolling in I can't deny anymore that there's hardly an app left that I can install in its most recent version. There's also a rising number of apps I can't even install at all. So unfortunately I cannot ignore the situation no more. As CM is dead I considered buying a new phone. But I'd really like to avoid that as long as possible because my OPO is of great non-material value to me. On the net I learned about the successor Lineage OS which I tried to flash last weekend. Well, I failed miserably. Furthermore I have no idea what "error 7" should tell me. This is what I did:
1. Updated the Recovery successfully to TWRP 3.3.1-0 => reboot
2. Created a backup of my existing CM Boot, System & Data
3. Wiped Dalvik, System, Data & Cache => reboot
4. Attempted to install the ROM but got an error 7 instead; I tried several times but to no avail
I doubt that I have accidently downloaded a wrong ROM or wrong Recovery. All of them are marked as suitable for bacon. But then again who am I to rule that out. So if error 7 means exactly that just let me know.
To make my OPO operate again I restored the backup. It did work but for now I'm stuck. I'm aware of the fact that I'm probably the wrong guy in the wrong place here as I'm neither a developer nor a flashaholic. But I really don't know anybody else I could ask. So if you have any idea at what point I messed things up I kindly ask you to drop me a line. Any help is appreciated!
If you don't mind I'd also like to use the opportunity to address another question. I'm wondering what the best ROM for my OPO might be. I understand the overall attitude on this platform that there really is no best ROM for all of us. Probably true, but there is certainly one for me. I'm worried that I might experience problems with LOS 16 as the team is still banging out nightly builds almost every day. What I am looking for is a ROM for daily use. So it needs to be
- absolutely stable
- responsive
- battery-friendly
I also expect all the built-in technology like camera, flashlight, bluetooth, WLAN etc. to work properly. Nothing fancy, just something that turns my OPO back into a sturdy tool I can rely on. If that means to flash a ROM with an outdated version of android then so be it. I can't afford to miss the call to pick up my baby girl from kindergarten or lose a precious moment with her because the signal isn't stable or the camera doesn't work. So should I stick with LOS 16 or do you have better recommendations?
Did you did a manual wipe of /system before installing the ROM? Maybe your data was encrypted? Then you'll have to format full data.
Or maybe you don't have the least of free space in your data partition? Maybe?
Anyway, all roms are good, some people has LOS with more battery useage than other AOSP ROMs, other peoples don't.
Just try, there's a lot & lot more of ROMs out there.
