[Q] Nvidia apps (ex. Grid Beta) on other devices? - Shield Q&A

I had been looking into running certain applications that for some reason only run on other devices I do not have onto my own set of devices, such as my primary, the note 3 from Verizon. I had successfully been able to achieve root and have safestrap with a partition of hyperdrive so I can test apps on there without ruining my default rom. First, I had seen that a file called, "build.prop" was accessible after root to mess around with to achieve running "non-compatible" apps on my note 3. While this did seem like a good method to attempt to get apps I could not get originally from the play store, a problem struck (well actually a few more than one). I needed to know multiple pieces of info from the device that was compatible with the app I wanted to use in the first place such as model number etc. I thought at first that I would have been able to get that info off the Nvidia Shield by searching it up online. That however was a failure since I could note find anything. My main point is that I would like to know if there is a way of flashing or installing the nvidia grid app to my note 3 after having succeeded to root the device.

This has been talked about before, a guy attepted to get it too work on another device but failed.
Grid is mean't only for the shield, no offense but we also don't need people from other devices sucking up grids connections anyway.
Also if I remember right, on nvidia's forums nvidia tried to make it in a way to only work on the shield.
If you really want to play pc games on it, use splashtop thd and stream games from your pc too your device.

try this
if you have a rooted ouya, and know how to extract an appstore apk, then try the amazing frog on the shield, it has full controller support for shield and is pretty fun, especially if you want the experience on the go

It must be more than just build.prop, more on system files. Like an assert check.
The closest I got was just changing the build.prop, just to download the damn app.
Nvidia is a large company anyway, they can handle it, they let Ouya on it.

You forget that Ouya has it, and it's Tegra 3 (Not 4), plus 1GB of Ram. This app is worth cracking down.
(Something Wikipad Inc. has very similar specs to and definitely what I'm looking into)
Don't use Splashtop THD, little to no controller support and forces resolution.
Use Kainy, for now...

Hello, I actually own a wikipad, in which you were talking about, and it is somewhat similar to the shield. I rooted it and I'm trying to get the grid beta app. I read a thing saying that it was only for people living in California because their towers signal doesn't go everywhere. I managed to download the app from apptoide but when you try to open it it tells you that your device isn't supported and I guess editing the build.prop to the shields doesn't work. Once the app is off the beta version someone will probably crack it.

No offense but I hope GRID sticks to SHIELD. If others start hogging up the servers we'll never get to enjoy the games on the device they are meant for.

[Q] Gameloft games on the gTablet.

Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone could give some insight as to why the gameloft games (ie. asphalt 5, Dungeon Hunter etc.) will not work on our devices.
I was guessing it has something to do with the tegra chip however, these games can run on my droid eris. I dont believe it has something to do with sdcard/sdcard2 issues, as I have tried both, on multiple roms.
Yes, I am aware that this device is not supported on their website, but again neither is my eris.
I think it has to do with the lack of open gl es driver support, as some 3d games work and others don't
gator I think you're correct. The games all load for me and look great until the actual game play starts and then it's all solid colors and crazy blocks.
hmm that is weird because i cant even get them to load.

well there is the problem.
they arent in the market for some reason (coughcoughapplecoughcough)
apparently they wont put the games in the market but you can go to their website and get them. only problem is they ask you for your carrier and phone info and send you a text with a link to a download place.
basically you need a phone to get it.
apparently other people have gotten them through less than legal means. which i can understand because of the hoops you would have to jump through to get these apps.

[Q] Order & Chaos Online officially supported

WELL,
I jumped onto the marketplace this morning to find that order & chaos online is now officially supported on the TF101. So I download it but on bootup it still says the device is unsupported... WHAT GIVES?
I went to get a refund but the app didnt show in 'my apps'.. grrrrr
Ive sent an email to android marketplace but no response yet. I called Gameloft who confirmed that there is still no support for this device.
Has anyone else come across this?
NOVA 2 is also listed as supported but not game to try !!!
dont see it in the marketplace
Not listed here either
Strange. Mine shows on the app and online marketplaces???
It's turned into an interesting fight between google and gameloft in that one suggests the other should provide a refund. Gameloft maintain that their apps are unsold to google thus it becomes their responsibility. Google state that the apps are maintained by gameloft and the marketplace is used more as a vehicle rather than a retailing. Im tending towards googles take.
Anyway, they both suck !!!
I'm not quite sure that it's all about a fight between gameloft and google, because, apps like order & chaos or available for other devices then the TF101.

I get unsupported as well for my TF and cappy. I had an i9000 rom before on it and that is supported. Its the same hardware as the cappy. I finally got 1.02 installed and its pulling the data to my cappy right now. Once i get it working i am goign to try the apk on my TF and see what happens. I'll keep you posted when i get home. If it works i am going to be happy happy happy!

Order and Chaos can be made to work by using a Titanium backup from another device.
The game runs fine, except once it see's you are on a Transformer it doesn't even try.
The Titanium backup has all of the files needed to run and places them in proper folders and skips the device check.
I have Order and Chaos on my TF and am like a level 6 now (I haven't played in a while because my internet at the hotel is balls)
O&Ch workong on TF =
= Backup of ex. SGS version - Titanium Backup -> Copy 3 files (backup) to TF -> Copy SD cache for ex. SGS version to TF -> Restore backup of O&Ch on TF -> Play the game....
No support for dock...only writting, low preformance on 1,5Ghz ......I deleted this game ...and i'm waiting for version that is optimalizet for tablets with honeycomb.
yeah. Shouldn't have to jump through hoops.
If someone can help me solve this problem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216779 we should be able to buy it directly from market + get updates/etc and buy other gameloft games too. (As long as they don't check for IMEI number, which we don't have for obvious reasons)
samsung GT-I9100 has Geforce GPU module inside it's CPU that is same(similar/compatible ?) to the one we have in our tegra cpus.

Nabi 2 play store????

I am an experienced Android user and have rooted my OG EVO and EVO LTE with never any problems. The question I have is. How to install the Play Store on a Nabi 2? I've downloaded the .apk directly to the Nabi, installed without a hitch. When I go to open; it just closes. Not a crash or force close but just an instant close. Any ideas on how to keep it open? I watched a You Tube vid on a guy using a Nabi 1 with the Play Store and believe me. I've done everything perfectly......so please please give me some advice.

It's almost the same specs as the 7! I was blown away by it! I obviously hate the fruit company, that's why I'm here. I traded my sister a tv for my son's itouch. Since the whole trial with Samsung I almost want to throw up. So I told him that I have to sell it & his leapad. He was so excited to get his Nabi & I'm jealous! The dual modes is phenomenal & a seamless experience. All I want to do is be able to get the play store on it. Amazon runs without a hitch, at least I was able to install Appy Geek! So please someone just gimme a little advice on how to get our beloved play store.

I just got Nabi2 for my grandson and am testing it out before I wrap it and give it to him, lol. I found this info. Guess we'll have to wait for a little bit.
Post-Launch Nabi 2 Tablet FAQs
Q: Where is Google Play? How do I install it?
A. Google's Support Site: The Android operating system is open source, which means that any device manufacturer is free to use Android on its devices. However, Google Play is an application that is only made available to devices that pass Google’s compatibility requirements. In addition, manufacturers must obtain a license from Google in order to install the Google Play Store app on their devices.
If you don’t have the Google Play Store app, and your device is not listed here, that means your device is not supported for use with Google Play at this time.
There is currently no Google Play Store apk that can be sideloaded successfully onto the nabi 2 Tablet without experiencing Forced Closure when used. Fan-a-Tech Eric is working hard on a solution that will allow users to do this. When available it will be posted here on the blog.

My 2 year old loves her Nabi2, also had a Nabi1 before she was 2. Suprised on how fast they learn to navigate the screens.
She is pretty advanced for her age, but they are setup pretty easy, so I am sure your kid would be fine if they are at least an average kid. Some kids that are slower learners may have some issues at 2.

I have an iPad 3 and my daughter likes playing with that. Of course, I'm hesitant to let her really get into it considering A: It's $500, B: It's MY tablet, meaning I have my own apps and stuff that I don't want her messing with, and C: Because she just LOVES touching that home key, it's hard to keep her in 1 app.
Still, the tablet does look intriguing. I think that tablet computers can be good learning tools. Hell my old kindergarten has a whole slew of iPads that they let the students use, although they have more plastic surrounding them than Joan Rivers' face so that they don't break when dropped or beaten up. And quite frankly, given how begrudgingly I picked up the iPad, the last thing I need is to bring yet ANOTHER one of them in the house. 2 iPads are enough (my wife has my old 2 and I have the new generation model.) I like to think we balance it out with 2 Samsung Android phones.
I actually just put two of these on layaway at Walmart this Saturday. One for my 8yo stepson who's been hounding me for a tablet for about a month, and the other for my 2yo. My little guy steals my Nexus 7 all the time to play Sonic CD and even posts pictures of himself on my google+ account. You'd be amazed at how fast a child can pick up the UI on an android device, it's so intuitive. I think any child lucky enough to have parents willing to blow $200 on a "toy" for a preschooler will have a field day with the Nabi. Now I'm just hoping that we have the play store fully functional before Christmas. I've purchased almost every high end game from gta3 thru horn, and was and am planning on linking my google acct, and installing them onto the boys tablets after they open them. I really wish I could get my hands on one now so I could pull a log-cat and see what's going on when you try to install an app.

You can install an app just fine, but from what I have been reading the problem is the play store and google services framework do not have root access. You can only install them on the data partition and not the system partition. We need to be able to root the Nabi to be able to get the Play Store to work. I am assuming no parent is willing to accidentally brick their child's tablet trying to do this. Does anyone even know what drivers we would use for ADB?

Been awhile since I messed with mine(Well hers), but I think the drivers I installed for rooting my Nexus7 also saw the Nabi2 as an ADB device. Also had a few ideas but my 2-1/2 year old would FREAK if I bricked her Nabi2. I still have a Nabi1(Already rooted) being I got the VIP Gold and was sent an email that I can keep my Nabi1 even with them sending me the Nabi2, too bad Nabi1 is not closer and I would have something to "TEST" with.
So I found a driver that I could use to for ADB and I used the universal root from Bin4ry but it was a no go. Has anyone else tried anything different to try to root their Nabi 2? Would be nice to know what has not worked so far.
Something a little off subject does anyone know how to change the default keyboard. Going in and out of Daddy mode switches the keyboard back to the Android keyboard after switching it to Swiftkey.

Been trying the script all afternoon with a brand new Nabi 2.

I also noticed after running the script that several of the apps are wiped:

Looking for .apks?

So I made the switch from the TF201 to the TF700, and I've got to say my overall experience is happy. The one thing I'm having trouble with is some of the games I have purchased are not compatible. I'm not one for pirating, but I do want these games on my tablet that I've already paid for.
Anyone know where I can pick up the APKs for Asphalt 6 and 7, Mass Effect Infiltrator, and BackStab? I'm not rooted, and really don't want to... But I do want the apps that I've already paid for.

Absolutely not condoning any kind of piracy, but I feel your pain. Here is a process I have to do a quick search for any apk that is out there.
1. If you are just looking for a canonical listing of all APKs:
http://www.google.com/search?q=-inurl:htm+-inurl:html+-inurl:asp+intitle:"index+of"++(apk)
2. If you are looking for a specific APK and you know what it is called add it right before the end of the string:
http://www.google.com/search?q=-inurl:htm+-inurl:html+-inurl:asp+intitle:%22index+of%22+%2B(<appname>.apk )
3. Wildcards in the appname area are supported but do result occasionally in unexpected results.

Oops, so you haven't.
If you have another Android device (like even a smartphone) you could install them to and copy this way, and if you don't, I think you should consider contacting these games' devs/support, they are normally very friendly, I had the best of experience with most of them.

Poor TF700 app support: Nexus 10 era

From the release of the Infinity, there has been low compatibility with apps and especially games. Some have said it is related to lack of developer support for the high res screen. Others have suggested the Nexus 10 will force developers into support for the new generation of where's-those-pixels tablets.
Both Skype and Rock star announced tablet optimised app releases in the coming fortnight (the latter for Vice City). The TF201 is on both compatibility lists but no Infinity. Is this deliberate? Or did hardly any Infinities sell and hence support for it make no business sense? In addition I don't see many EA or Gameloft releases, both old and new, supporting our machine.
Perhaps I'm being impatient and this is just the early adopter first world problem. Or maybe it's another reason to jump ship to the N10.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Not just the TF700. The Note 10.1 has the same issue. As does pretty much every other HD tablet.
They work fine. I've got nearly every supposedly 'not-compatible' game running, no issues...
The thing is this. Devs made their games in a low res. They're too lazy to re-release the games with a higher resolution. (adding the infinity to the list won't change the ingame res, it'll still be upscaled.)
All they have to do is update the texture packs, but they simply won't. Of course not,
EA has always been too arrogant for customer support. (Don't believe me? The EA Master Server was dead every day in BF2, and they haven't changed anything, not even a cable, 8 years, 7 Triple-A games and 9 expansions later. The Master server still erases profiles&progress nearly once a day, fails twice a week completely and crapped out on the release night of BF3 and stayed down for almost 3 days...)
Gameloft is Ubisoft's mobile section, so that speaks for itself in terms of a completely non-existent customer support.
To be fair, though, Gameloft has a decent amount. EA is just an arse:

Please clarify. There's a hundred ways in which you 'can't download'. Error? Doesn't start? What?
I side loaded most of my gameloft games that's not available on the market and they work fine. Some games however will have smaller menu screens or smaller on screen buttons. An example is wild blood. Come to think of it's that the only one I recall right now. EA games however, you get a server error when games open. With the exception of NFS Most Wanted. It can open but plays slow. Like playing in slow motion. Theres a mod to make it faster though. Glu games are all available. Most other apps are too.
On nexus 10 almost all the games for gameloft, EA are available from the market and all work without issues. Once exception is wild blood is not available but can be side loaded but buttons are even smaller and menus are blank. So really not playable. Most other apps are available too.
It maybe a matter of not being able to test their apps so they dont make it in the compatibility list? But it does suck that tf700 out of the box is not supported by most. Seems like its the misfit of all the devices due to its unique screen resolution.

Yup. Pretty serious, too xD. Used to be in a clan (before we all parted ways), was clanleader for almost a year, as well as led several division. Even played in the ESL and Clanbase finals for SWBF2, BF2142 and FEAR. (we won swbf2 several times :highfive: )
Been out of it all for a while now, though. Too little free time, and the games are too bloody expensive (And there's no fun in it anymore, all those kids and aim assist.. (we used to call it aimbots, and they got you permbanned..... now it's part of the game )
Aaaand we're off topic again xD Oops...
With the increase of 1080p phones in the next year being announced, I would expect that app developers would start to catch up with high resolutions. It's always been a matter of time.

Please clarify. There's a hundred ways in which you 'can't download'. Error? Doesn't start? What?

When you launch the game it needs to download additional files, when you click to do so you get error 5002, I called EA about it and they never called back, just look at the reviews for the game filter to tf700 and you'll see what I'm talking about.

That's a resolution-not-found error.
Basically, it means the installer can't find the files related to the device's resolution. (Evidently, as they don't exist.) You can call them until hell freezes over, it's not going to be resolved.
There's only one way around that, and that is to download and install the SDdata manually. There's plenty of sites that offer them. I don't think it counts as illegal to manually download the data if you already paid for the .apk in the playstore.

I think I remember this work around a while back. I will transfer the data from my prime to the tf700 and see how it goes. Thanks for bringing this up.

Same issue, same result. Not able to copy data from my S3 for this. Any solution?
My result with NFS most wanted is sideloading the apk from my s3 worked fine and it downloaded the data when I opened the game. Game is in slow motion however.
For NBA jam or Mass Effect when I transfer the apks and open the game I get an error. I copied the SD data also but same error on Mass Effect and on NBA jam the screen just flickers with the NBA jam logo.

I have nba jam on my tf700 and I downloaded it directly from the market when it came out, works fine too.
Edit: Oh F Me, I must've not downloaded the extra files, now I get the server error 5002 crap. I am just about done with this, either google steps up, takes a hit to make customers happy and apply some rules to the market, or people are going to start to leave the android tablet market and seek refuge with apple, at least we know they have rules for supporting their devices. I know, I know- itunes, evil apple and closed system, but I am willing to live with that but I would be able to download and play every game on their market without worries that my device would be incompatible for years to come.
GOOGLE GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AND FIX THIS, IT'S BEEN AND IS GETTING WORSE, NOT BETTER!
I wouldnt necessarily blame google though. They have set of guidelines that if followed, apps should upscale correctly to fit larger resolution screen. Devs are just lazy and unfortunately some of them don't support tf700.

I do blame google, they allow the apps on the market without trying to hold the devs accountable to following the rules. why have guidelines if they aren't going to be enforced in any fashion. Sure, our devices were the first to hit the 1080p resolution in the Android market, but **** none of the big players are interested in supporting it. Even if they say they support it they really don't. As an example, you can buy need for speed for the infinity, it says it's compatible in the market, you can download the base files, but your f'd trying to download the additional files needed to play. ow whos fault is that? Google for allowing it to happen or EA for even allowing the base file to be downloaded? In this case, it's both parties, but when it comes to overall compatibility it's on googles shoulders for not enforcing some sort penalty.
It really doesn't matter what I think, they got my money and I'll make sure I don't fall in the shame on me catagory.
Oh and the Zen pinball not compatible issue, they turned it back on for the tf700 after I had a nice conversation with them about it not working. I will cut and paste my emails and their responses. BTW it all happened in a 30-45 minute window.
This is how devs should respond to issues with their apps.
This is me emailing them about the problem with Zen Pinball after the latest update.
"Hi,
I am a little more than frustrated with your company right now. I had this game running perfectly fine before the latest update, which broke portrait mode, so I figured I would un-install it then re-install it to see if that would fix the issue. Low and behold my device is NOW INCOMPATIBLE, which is a crock of you know what, it worked great before this last update. My device is a tegra 3 device, this game is marketed as a tegra 3 game with enhanced visuals, my daughters FUHU NABI 2 is compatible, a friggin kids tablet is compatible but my $600 Infinity isn't? Pleae send me the old apk so I can play one of my favorite games again.
Thank You".
Their response,
"Hi Cris,
Thank you for your email. We are aware of the issue with portrait mode, and will be issuing a fix shortly.
I am not sure why your device is now listed as incompatible, but I will look into this right away.
These updates are tricky, there always seems to be issues that we could not test for, or weird settings that we need to look at in the Google Store."
My response back,
"I appreciate your timely response to this problem, I contacted google play and they looked on the blacklist and the infinity is listed on that, just an FYI. Once this issue is resolved can you please email me and let me know because it really was my favorite game on the market.
Thank You."
And their response,
"We are turning the device back on momentarily. Portrait mode will not work yet, but should work soon as well. Apologies for the inconvenience."
Talk about easy, I mean they gave personal responses, not canned, looked into the problem and made available again in less then an hour. This is great customer service and in turn make me want to buy more of their games.
Edit:
More information from Zen Studios
Hi Cris,
The device was turned on about an hour ago, but could take up to an hour longer to reinstate. Please let me know if things continue to not work for you a few hours from now.
