In the store where I'm buying a new smartphone, both Xperia Z and Nexus 5 16 gb have the same price.
So I would like you to tell me what you think is best.
My main usage is social apps/web browsing, watch movies, listen to music, take casual photos and gaming (just a little).
I know the N5 has a much better cpu and gpu, but I'm not going to play much hardcore games (maybe just some GTA).
The advantages of Xperia Z are:
micro-sd slot (big advantage for me)
it's waterproof (awesome)
better battery life(?)
has better headphone audio quality
even though it hasn't got android 4.4 yet, it has android 4.3 with Sony apps
better overall quality
I can't really decide because I like Nexus 5 too, it's design and screen.
Just another question do you think is Xperia Z worth 70€ more than Nexus 4? (not related to the main choice)
Thank you.

Hold off for the Nexus 5 for now as there are many issues with it and google cannot get solid ground whether its a hardware or software issue, especially on the mic. Generally when a new device comes out i let it wait out and watch for bugs so I don't suffer through them but this time I couldn't resist.
I dont think xperia z is gud...one of my colleague had z...the display on it was sh*tty!! Bettr go for z1...its on par with N5....i hav N5 and my colleague exchanged his z with z1..
Z1 has superior camera, battery, display on par, sony apps+ android 4.4 on the way!!
But personally i prefer my N5 as its smaller more compact more lighter..

I had the Xperia Z and returned it within 2 days. The battery life was HORRID and it couldn't be flashed or anything had I decided to do it. It was a beautiful phone and I loved the features but it chewed through almost 70% of my battery within 4 hours with only about 2 hours of that total being used to play games and surf the web.
My Nexus 5 on the other hand, stock, would go all day with the same usage. Now that I flashed a custom rom and kernel it lasts even longer. It doesn't have a microSD nor is it waterproof. But if storage is an issue then save up $50 more and get the 32gb version. Also, phones don't belong in water anyways and I've always been in the mindset to keep my phone in my pocket and use a bluetooth headphones to take calls.
Xperia z is garbage. Do not recommend

z1 is beautiful.
We can't decide for you, its your money your purchase.
Yeah you're all right I should pick N5, the problem is the Nexus 5 is out of stock atm in store I have to buy it, I'm hoping it gets back on by the end of the week.
In case it doesn't, I have to pick another phone because I have a coupon that ends at that time. So if that would happen, is the Xperia Z worth the 100$ over the Nexus 4?

Again, if battery is one of your main concerns then the Xperia Z shouldn't be on your list. But if I had to pick another phone because the Nexus 5 isn't in stock, I would go with the Moto X.
had one year ago xperia z just a while and sold it.
the main reason that you will not get the same speed and support like for the nexus 5.
and even with so popular galaxy s4, our still not that smooth like nexus 5.
why other companies cannot get normal android os for their devices and do not install their garbage software.
when I test z1 and z. the speed on z1 is definitely faster than z. But I prefer N5 than z1.

fyi i own n5 and xz and the xperia z has a better cam and is a perfect outdoor phone, the n5 is the speed monster. Combined they are a good team
Also the Xperia Z's battery time is much better than the n5's.

Hi,
I would just like few opinions about the comparison of this 2 smartphone/phablets...
For the past 4 years I've been using only iphones... Now I want to move to android but not sure which one would be better.
I can see there is a lot of complains on Sony camera and problems with gaps etc...
Thanks

So maybe the new LG G3 might be interesting for you as it uses a laser to auto focus which should theoretically be quicker than the conventional auto focus.
If you ask Note 3 owners, whether you should buy Note 3 or Z2, you will be recommended to buy Note 3. Obviously because you ask people who love using Note 3 and thereby have it.
Same thing the other way around.
You are the one, who is buying a new phone, thereby you have to look at the pros and cons of both phones and make the decision

I have both devices.
To be frank, both got pros and cons. Both is actually have similar (I repeat similar) specs, but not the same.
Physical size, both almost the same, N3 win in slightly bigger size (in mm calculation).
Internal storage comes in 16gb for Z2, whereby N3 in 32gb (at least here in SG, this is the internal storage size).
RAM is the same 3 gigs (both are smooth).
Battery 3200 for Z2, and 3100 for N3. But so far usage (my personal usage), Z2 has a better power management (both I use without power saving mode).
Camera, no need to say. Rear camera Z2 has a bigger megapixels (20 vs 13) But Z2 loose on the front camera. So if you like to do selfie, it sucks
The sound to be frank Z2 is nicer in my opinion. A lot of my friends and relatives said sony xperia got a bad sound quality especially when plug in the earphone. But this Z2 is nice. I tested using the same earphone on my Z2 and N3, Z2 is much better.
Custom ROM, N3 (especially N9005) got more custom ROM compare to Z2 (maybe Z2 is still new device).
On the other side which Z2 will never win N3 (or note series) is the S-pen. If you like/need to use S-pen for your daily driver (like me), N3 is all the way win. To be frank, I need the S-pen (and all its features). That's why I also never use CM/AOSP base, even I know CM/AOSP is much faster compare to TW.
But when carrying Z2, I don't need to scare that my phone touch water on the rainy day. whereby N3, I need to be careful. So when I'm doin my outdoor activities/work, and I need to use to capture pictures, Z2 will be quite handy and useful at any conditions.
Z2 front and back are tempered glass. So have to be careful not to drop it, otherwise it will break. And better put the screen protector for both side (if you are quite careless in handling phone), to avoid scratches.
So in my opinion, both are good phones with its own pros and cons.
M8 ? G3?
from what i have seen so far.....i would suggest Z2 if S-pen isnt that big of an issue.....i hardly ever use my spen...except maybe to jot down some notes so i use AOSP roms as TW is laggy sometimes...i would even go on to say the Z2 is a better survivor than the note 3..... just saw the drop test for the Z2. NOT A SINGLE CRACK ON ANY OF ITS GLASS SURFACES!!!! so its tough.... tougher i dare say than the note 3 as its screen broke on the drop test.... as for sound... i know for a fact Z2 is better....screen...it comes down to preference....if you like mad colors note 3....if you want natural colors go for the IPS on Z2...battery rating seemed really good for the Z2 as well....all in all...if you dont use spen all that much...which does tend to happen to a lot of note users...then i would suggest go for the Z2
however....i would like to mention that modding Sony's flagships are much harder than from Samsung's ...... and unlocking bootloaders in Sony always leads to some function failing.... in the Z which i had....the Bravia engine wouldnt work & in the Z1..the camera didnt work...or something related to camera...not 100% sure yet ....Samsung on the other hand is much easier to mod in my opinion....although the introduction of KNOX has brought on some headaches
I will stick to Note 3, this is a phone from the past for the future, so will wait until Note 4. concerning Z2 not tempting at all against Note 3 not even LG G3, Note 3 still has the best developers support, has elegant look, has the fancy S pen ( might not use a lot but having it is a go, helped me a lot with notes and multitasking), has a decent camera with smart stabilization, I love it.

Great explanation and i'd like to add also, there are not much accessories for Z2 yet for example otterbox, and the boring part of note 3 was there are no FM Radio. But overall both phone as you said have it's own pros and cons.

Compare Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs. Sony Xperia Z2
Hi,
I have a Galaxy Note 2 and I am satisfied with it. If I am going to change it, I would buy newer version of Galaxy Note.
Anyway, maybe the following link helps you to decide one.

Well your first post, so nothing to say really but please try to notice when the actual topic was created. In this case it was almost seven months ago!
Mods should CLOSE this topic.
I had a Z2 - the battery life is 10x better, the camera is 100x better. The Z2 is slippery to hold unless its in a case, it attracts fingerprints like a mofo, and the flap for the charging port becomes annoying. Other than that, its a excellent phone imo. Just doesn't have a stylus like the N3

I've seen that comparison and I didn't find any big difference so I'm asking the experts here
From what I read the z3 has a brighter screen with better viewing angles, better battery life, smaller form factor and a slightly better chipset with the 801 versus 800.. With that said I'm patiently waiting for the T Mobile version to come out
Z2 is using Snapdragon 801, not 800.

Z3 has the same screen as Z2
I'm in the same boat as the OP here. Hope someone posts a comparison between the z2 and z3 with real world usage.
Well,
Z2 is cheaper
Z2 has more development (rootable, etc)
Z3 has brigher screen
Z3 should have a (marginally better) camera
Z3 is ergonomically better (personal though, but rounder, more compact)
Z3 has better battery life
Z3 is not rootable without unlocking (which results in issues on its own) yet, but should be in time
All in all, Z3>Z2 but only if you have an issue with spending more money I'd say go for the Z2... In specs they are almost the same with a slight edge to the Z3

Hehe, well... that's personal of course. In that case, go with the Z2... Excellent phone
For me (had a Z1) the Z3 was an actual worthwhile upgrade while the Z2 wasn't. You know you pay top prices when you buy new models, either wait a bit and go for the Z3 when the price went down a bit or go for the Z2 now. It is indeed very similar.

battery life and build quality are two main factors i got hte z3 over z2. Plus i got a decent deal transferring my number to t-mobile here in Poland. Yesterday i spent a good days worth of internet browsing, watching vids online emails, calls and other stuff and at the end of the day still have 45% left.
I had this conversation with my friend about this, as he's thinking about the z2 or z3 and there isn't much different. They must of tweaked with the hardware or processor as battery life is great.

Went from a Z2 to Z3. Wife still has Z2 so I can compare side-by-side.
Battery life: Z2 was already pretty good; doesn't seem to be that much of a big difference
Display: Z3 seems a bit brighter on maximum
Processor: Z2 and Z3 are both snappy; I can't say I notice a huge difference.
Z3: Did have some black screen crash happen to me a few times. Seems to have been bluetooth related as it happened when I was trying to pair some devices.
By biggest issue I have is that the Z3 camera doesn't seem as good as the Z2 in less than bright light. Colours seem washed out or perhaps the a bit overexposed. Not as sharp or contrasty as Z2. It's almost like there is some lens flare to the z3. Also Z3's white balance seems not as good. This has been my biggest disappointment but I'm hopeful that this is software not hardware. Maybe it's because the higher ISO in low light is doing weird things.
I'll see if I can put a picture up with z3 and z3 side by side.
Regards,
Ken

I'm in the same boat. I was all set to upgrade from my Galaxy S3 to the Z3 today. When I got down to the store turns out my wireless provider has changed the pricing on the Z2. The Z3 (16GB) is $180 on a two year contract. The Z2 is now $0 on a two year contract. Not sure that the Z3 is worth $180 over the Z2.
Now I'm not sure what to do.

The Z3 is a minor improvement: Thinner, much brighter max brightness, little better battery life, slightly better speakers. Is it worth $180 thats up to you. The Z3 on TMO is 32GB which carrier are you on?
I'm in Canada with Sasktel.
Go for the Z2 I guess $180 savings is a lot, especially since they are fairly close overall.
I need a replacement phone right now and I struggle between those two. I gernarly prefer HTC becouse of the design, sense, and the community support. How ever Z3 is around the price,6 month newer and has higher specs. Help me to make a decision please!
Z3 has 3gb of ram. Wuyh lollipop coming that eats a lotof ram, yoy will really need that quantity ti be futur proof. Htc m8 has only 2.
Plus z3 has vetter camera 20.3 MP unlike the 4 MP camera if HTC. The inly main advantage if thehtc is its design. But personelly I don't find the z3 any less beautifu.
Last but notleast, the epic battery of the z3 3100 mah.

But what about this loosing DRM crap that Sony annoys you with? And also I am concerned about updates since Sony pushes out 2 phones a year I am worried they will forget about it soon. M8 has a google play edition so their is at least always that.
Actually because Sony only produces a smaller amount of products they are better and quicker to release with the only exception being GPEs, all being equal I would take the Z3 over the M8 hands down as with lollipops new raw format for images the DRM keys for Sony's special camera won't really matter.
One last thing and my only gripe with the Z3 is the button placement is awkward (physical buttons) they are low and geared towards one hand use but it took me a long while to adjust... Go hold one to see what I'm talking about.
switch from the m8 2 months ago and havent looked back. the z3 is a better phone in many aspects, its faster, has a much superior camera, bigger screen, it lays flat on the table, its easy to grip and doesnt slide from your hand...
I do wish it had an IR blaster and was easier to root but still I am willing to live with this. The speakers are not as good as the m8 but still really good, especially being waterproof. The Z3 is also about the same size as the m8 in terms of width and height but is much thinnery and doesnt have the awkward curve at the back and slippery surface.
Don't worry about updates for the z3. it will likely be the same next year as it is this year.

We’ll start the upgrade at beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series – continuing thereafter for all remaining devices above."
If you like Sense, you may need to get used to Sony's take on Android. In the interest of full disclosure, I've owned 3 Sonys (T, Z1 Compact and now a Z3), and I love their UI. Anyway, my daughter had an HTC M7, which died recently so she got my Z1c... but that is the second bad experience I've had with HTC.
Stamina mode with Sony is as good as it gets for saving the battery.
For the build quality, you might find them similar. I always find Sony's to be very good.
For the Camera (DRM issue), there is a thread in here where someone tested the low light quality (I guess that's what most the fuss is about) and said there was hardly a difference. I can't speak to the change in quality myself.
Personally, if camera is not a big deal I think The M8 is better.
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
Having owned both I have to say that both are excellent phones.
I am very hesitant to put either of the phones over other one. First when I changed from M8 I just hated how Z3 UI looked, too big icons etc. I am now used to this and I find that especially battery is much better on Z3 and this really important.
I hope that more manufacturers start to pay attention to the battery life over how the phones perform. Nexus 6 is a good example. I couldn't care less how much they score on the benchmark tests if the battery is dead by afternoon.
First up, I admit that I don't own the M* but I have tried it in the hand borrowed from a friend. It lacked the 'love at first sight' effect for me.
The Z3 is a much better looking device, more symmetry, more balanced, flat on a surface, razor thin with a brilliant battery to tow. It really is the only device that can make iOS users turn their heads. Also, if you are a brand conscious guy/gal then Sony commands a kind of respect only bested or matched by Apple. The thing is waterproof as well. Has more RAM for better multitasking, brighter display with cool enhancements in gallery and video like x reality boosting. The display can go darker too for reading at night. The camera will show more detail, better for zooming in, cropping, throwing to a large high res display and for a more overall positive accumulated effect. The hardware button is a great addition esp for underwater shots and quick firing the camera from sleep. The low light capability is currently next to none amongst flagships (near dark scenarios). The only gripe I have with the cam is that HTC and iPhones snap images faster, making the user experience more effortless. Magnetic charging is just a bonus. Did I say the battery is really good? Finally, the M9 may debut so getting an M8 may lose novelty sooner than a Z3. Although the Z4 may or may not be round the corner too.
TLDR? The Z3 hands down. No competition.

First up, I admit that I don't own the M* but I have tried it in the hand borrowed from a friend. It lacked the 'love at first sight' effect for me.

I should point out that M8 was released before Z2 even came out. I know it because I had pre-ordered Z2 originally but since I couldn't wait I went and bought M8 from the shop.
So M8 novelty has already been much longer there than it was with Z2.
I also disagree about the design. Z3 is gorgeous, but M8 is even more beautiful.

M8 announcement: 25/3/14
Z2 announcement: 24/2/14
So your point is?
Let's be honest here. You like the M8, buy the M8. You like Sony, get the Sony. Pointless to argue.

I thought that Nokia already taught you that announcement and availability are two different things. M8 was able to purchase in April, Z2 came in May.

Hi all
Im thinking of buying a Z3, mainly for media reasons (youTube, NetFlix, Photos, Music and a few games).. Great speakers & a good camera. I have owned both the M8 & M9, but both lack a good, even decent camera by todays standards. plus here in UK, I can pick a Z3 up for about £320.
I do own a Lumia 1520 and a Canon SX700, which means good cameras already, but as a candid photographer I am hoping to carry round something for quick snaps in my pocket, without the phablet mass of the 1520 and bulk of my canon.
Ive watched a few YouTube videos, but all seem to point towards the Z3 camera not being good at all, so the question I want to ask is:
- With the software updates the Z3 has had so far, do you find the Audio and Camera good and enjoyable to use.
- Does the Z3 suffer from the Z2 "quiet notification sound" bug.
- How does the Z2 measure up to the Z3, is it a worthy purchase.
Thanks all
